About 2 months ago, we have visited here for lunch and all of us ordered chirashi sushi which is bowl of sushi rice topped with different kinds of sashimi. Â It was excellent and service was superb. Â Since then, have gone back two more times including today's lunch.
It was right after lunch rush, so place was kinda messy but service was still goo and our chirachi came out as expected. Â I would go back again.
Mr. Sonoda.. Â i like the price and the servers but.. Â you need to hire a interior decorator and do some major renovation..
Let's get the formality of the way: this place has the most mediocre, customer unfriendly, dated and ________ (fill in the blank) interior ever. The restrooms are semi-broken, etc.
If you can get past the above and give them a shout, you will get good sushi (for Denver). Thursdays are a good day as they get some specialty fish and it tends to be fresher- note we are in a landlocked state so plan your fish eating accordingly.
We go with Omakase (chefs choice type of arrangement) and have not had a bad meal yet. With the arrival of a new chef (Jimmy) they are experimenting with new items and are getting better.
The newest invention was the Shrek Roll - haven't tried it (we are more of sashimi / nigiri type customers) but it did look good and customers next to us said it was great.
A decent place for a decent dinner. Interior remodel and update would do this place wonders!
I guess I should have seen the sign when I walked in, "bathrooms are for customers only" - this is the way you are welcomed in to this business. Not, "enjoy our fresh fish".
Service was good ... food was of the quality of a bad all-you-can-eat place ... mushy, bland, and eckkkkk... Â
Miso soup was pretty good - except I think that is what I got sick from!
Lastly, I guess I forgot I was in Aurora - serious trash eats here - next table was a girl showing her entire butt (wearing jeans that were too small) - at the other table was an Asian family - all barefoot with their feet on the chairs.
I will not repeat.
Oh yeah, they had a happy hour menu when we arrived (even though they had no regular sushi menu) - she said the prices were great during happy hour - yet, they were only one piece - again, sushi place, you can not cut the portion in half and offer it for half price, then say it is a good deal!
Sushi just like mother makes. Â Matter of fact I take my mother there when I am in town. Â The food is good and plentiful and they have more than sushi. Â If you're looking for one of those trendy sushi place take your high heels somewhere else. Â It is in a strip mall that has seen better days but then you are going for the food. The Russian waitress is the fast thing on two legs, and she speaks Japanese. Â If it is good enough for my mother and her Japanese friends then you should give it a try.
Review Source:I used to come here a lot... I mean, a LOT... Everytime I was in Denver (at least once a month) it used to be pretty decent... The fish wasn't the freshest, and the rice wasn't the best... But it was always satisfactory.
The last time, I was here, the rice was over cooked, soggy, and disgusting. Â The fish was dry, and not fresh - I expected this a little, considering we came in on a Monday, but not to the extent that it was.
Service, at least, was the same as it's always been... Friendly and efficient.
The meal was bad... Just terrible... I'm shocked that none of us got sick from this last meal... It's too bad... I used to be a regular here, as much as I could be, whenever I visited Denver. It was part of my ritual, but no more...
After this last experience, I doubt I'll be back... It's too bad...
Well, the overwhelming odor of seafood was a bit too much when first walking through the door. Â It was prime lunch time too and it was dead. Â Red flags!!
I've been here a few times for pick up but never ate in. The service was incredibly slow, and there's no reason it should have been since it was pretty much just us and another table. Â Even the sushi took a long time to come out. Â I needed to hurry since I was on my lunch break, so my friends and I were getting really frustrated.
The rolls were expensive and unimpressive. Â We ordered a variety of "spicy" rolls that pretty much sucked. Â The texture was off and they all tasted the same-bleck. Â There was no spice at all. Â We ordered 2 other rolls that had more flavor than the spicy rolls, but still were pretty bad. Â In the past I've ordered miso soup and I never liked it from here, there's no seaweed in it, just broth, onions and tofu. Â Today I tried the soup of the day which was a clear soup with mushrooms and tofu that was actually the only good thing I had.
Won't be back.
When I want good sushi, this is the place I go. Â The nigiri is always great, and the specialty rolls are almost too big to jam in your mouth. Â They don't have as large a variety as some places, but I'll take quality over quantity. Â I've had the occasional kitchen item as well, and recommend the age dashe tofu appetizer. Â The staff has always been friendly to me, and the service is good, but can be slow when they're busy. Â I've occasionally had better sushi elsewhere, but it's either more expensive or out-of-state.
Review Source:Sometimes friends trump food - not often but sometimes. Â On this occasion I was invited for sushi at Sonada's with a couple of old friends, so the sushi was really secondary. Â We got there before 6:00 pm, in time for Happy Hour prices, 2-fers on draft beer (Coors & stuff, bleh), wine and some specials on sushi rolls and nigiri. Â I think this is a safe bet for you if you are in this area, off I-225 and Parker area. Â
We pretty much splurged (they had a couple of appetizers & drinks before I got there) and our meal came to $90 for three people. Â I've spent more on two people. Â The yellowtail nigiri was some of the best I've had.
Being in Denver for New Years is a first. Normally, I'm in Los Angeles eating a New Years Day Japanese meal with the family, but today, Sister and I are in Denver enjoying our New Years sushi at Sister's favorite Sushi place.  It's the only place she knows  that serves traditional futomaki.  All the other places put avocado in it.  It's Futomaki, not FutoCali.  Friendly service that is too apologetic during the service. If you did a shot of sake everytime you hear "sorry" in this place, you wouldn't get out the door.  They are very nice.
We had some basic sushi. Â Yellowtail, Tuna, Salmon, Futomaki and Spicy Tuna roll. Â I was surprised the other traditional sushi "inari" wasn't available. Â I guess it's too basic, but that's what I look forward to during our New Years meal. Â Inari is a superstition for me. Â Most people call Inari by a nickname "Football" because it looks like a football. Â Eating Inari is a gambling good luck superstition for me during the football season and this is the last week of the NFL season, so I was really hoping to have some. Â The sushi today was as good as expected. Â A solid place to enjoy sushi. Â
Aside: On the way home, we stopped at an Asian market and they happened to have Inari in their sushi section. Â So, my football superstition has been fed too. Â Hoping it pays off for me tomorrow.
Without a doubt Sonoda's is one of my favorite places for sushi in Aurora. Â Everything is consistently fresh; the staff is always friendly, excellent tempura, and fairly competitive prices. Â If you find yourself seated at Sodona's and are struggling with decision making skills, may I suggest giving the Kumo roll a try.
Review Source:I was born in Japan and lived there until I was 6 and one of my favorite foods in Japan was sushi and it still is sushi. I go back to Japan every once in a while and their sushi is awesome. Sonoda's is an OK place for me. I know people that work there and I know the owner's wife and all and they are very nice, the service is pretty good, but the food is just OK. Not bad, not wow. I always get the natto maki and I really like that. And I also get the tuna, amaebi, ebi, and udon with a side of tempura..and honestly like I said before it is just OK. I really like the udon and the tempura is good, the sushi is not a wow for me. Obviously it's not fresh fish because you can't really find fresh fish in Colorado, but overall I'd give this place like a B.
Review Source:My all-time favorite sushi place in the metro area was Geisha on Parker & Mississippi. When it closed years ago, I was so sad (yes, please serenade me with your miniature violins).
But then I realized that frankly, I needed to pull up my britches. There are plenty of other sushi places in Denver and beyond and for me, Sonoda's of Aurora fits the bill nicely.
Just think, I can sit down and be treated to a piping hot bowl of Miso soup, or an ever-changing array of Oroshi (little vegetable or seafood plates - the last time I was there it was a marinated octopus dish).
Then I can stuff myself with sushi and sashimi. Do I want to do Chirashi (assorted sliced fish over rice)? Perhaps some Chutoro (fatty tuna) or Kaibashira (teensy little scallops) or Uni (yes, sea urchin milt - "the guy stuff" if you know what I'm saying). Or a veggie roll - maybe some Natto (stinky fermented soybeans) or Yamagobo (crunchy burdock root)?
And if I'm not in the mood for sushi (say WHAT??!?) there's always tonkatsu, teriyaki and tempura to titillate me.
Cheer up folks! And savor Sonoda's.
Sorry, but I wasn't impressed. Â I stopped by for happy hour after work and was disappointed. Â The happy hour prices, especially for nigiri, were higher than other places. Â I got a few rolls and hoped for some quality to go with the price. Â Nope...
See the photo I added (salmon & spicy scallop rolls). Â The rolls were small, there were no veggies (no avocado or cucumber in a salmon roll?) and they were very basic. Â Nothing special. Â On the bright side, the baked yellowtail roll was really tasty! Â That one at least tasted like it had some effort put into it!
I waited for an eternity for them to bring me my check. Â $15 for 3 tiny rolls and I'm still kind of hungry. Â Freakin' lame sauce.
I will be back. Â If for no other reason than they gave me a loyalty card. Â That's right folks, I earn points when I dine out and more points when I treat the office to lunch on Mondays. Â My new favorite sushi joint in Aurora.
The spider roll is out of control and delicious. Don't miss the sunomono salad and make a kissy face at the fishies on your way out the door. Â I will try the tempura next time. Â A+ service and a nice website.
Love it! Â Love it! Love it! Â My first experience at Sonoda's the one located at Southeast Denver,~ Aurora, Colorado. Â With awesome company you can have awesome food... Cant wait to return for more!

I vowed to never return to this restaurant after eating lunch here one day. Â Such steep prices for blah sushi. Â I sat at the sushi bar and I couldn't help noticing how dirty it was behind the bar. Â The aluminum blinds behind the bar had been splattered by something long ago and the box that they keep the bamboo roll mats in obviously hadn't been cleaned in a while. Â With so many other sushi restaurants out there I cant imagine why anyone would patronize this one.
Review Source:this is my family's stand-by sushi restaurant to go to...but i have to admit it's not my favorite. i think the whole restaurant could use a little (or a lot) renovation. it's older and i get this feeling that it's not the cleanliest of restaurants--not that appetizing. i definitely liked the denver location better. the sushi is good, but i wish they had more to choose from on their entree menu. i always end up getting teriyaki chicken or shrimp tempura--nothing special. the salmon is pretty bland and i wouldn't recommend the dish. and really the prices seem kinda steep for mediocre food.
Review Source:Sonoda's has these huge fish in a tank as you walk in the door that makes you wonder if that is what you'll be eating. You know, like a lobster tank.
This Sonoda's is located just west of 225 on Parker in a strip mall. The decor is bland, and almost borders on Japanese dive.
The food is always great and the fish has always been fresh. I've always been a bit disappointed by the chef specials though, never as good or as creative as at the Sushi Boat. Because of that I always seem to get the same thing when I eat here.
The great things about Sonodas are 1) the happy hour sushi prices and 2) they have a Sonodas card which gives you points for the sushi you eat. When you reach a certain number of points, you get a gift certificate by mail. They also send you a gift certificate on your birthday.
It's the little things that count.
