Absolutely recommend this place to anyone and everyone! I went here two weeks ago with a friend, we were looking for a decent brunch where the mimosas would flow and we won and then some....I had the eggs benedict, being a bit adventures and never having tried eggs pouched before, I am a huge fan! The has was fantastic, the english muffin grilled just right and the homefries were fantastic.
We went Sunday around 11:30am and it wasn't busy at all (probably because it was 80 outside already and everyone else was at the beach!) but it did start to fill up around noon and pretty quick. They had the full bar available, as well as their lunch menu for those who aren't a big fan of Sunday brunch.
I plan to go back pretty regularly even though it is a 20+ minute drive from my house.....hope to see you there!
First time at Southside Tavern today at my friend's recommendation. On Sunday they have a brunch menu which featured items such as (not a complete list) peanut butter and fluff french toast, corned beef benedict and an over medium fried egg atop fried chicken w/biscuits with sausage gravy (sounds heavenly, but I'll take one bite and need a bypass) along with a limited lunch menu on the back.
Service - I thought it was good. I wanted a brunch type of drink but not a bloody mary or mimosa so she suggested a bellini w/peach schnapps which they made light on the schnapps b/c I don't like 'sweet' drinks - it was so tasty I had two.
We started w/the philly cheese steak egg rolls - I thought they were really good. I ordered the apple and goat cheese salad which has candied walnuts and craisins (I picked off 3/4 of them) w/a white balsamic vinaigrette. I added grilled chicken and enjoyed the salad very much.
My friends had the PBF french toast and my other friend had a greek salad w/steak tips - both enjoyed their selections.
I have to be honest. I wish I'd placed two orders of the philly cheese steak egg rolls for myself, driven home at break neck speed, and hidden myself away to eat them, not sharing. Guess it just means I have to go back. Alone. And in disguise.
I live within walking distance from this place, and I have to say, it's pretty good for a townie bar in Braintree.
Recommended apps: Fried pickles, fried mozzarella
Recommended entrees: Steak tips, chicken club sandwich, salads, fried fish sandwich
Drink list is pretty sweet, and they always have good brews on tap. Check out their daily special menu - always something good on there.
This is definitely a case where I wish Yelp allowed 1/2 stars (needs to happen). 4 is a bit generous, and 3 stingy but my experience was good so we'll say 4.
It's a slight step up from most local sports bars with lots of huge high-def tvs (not a bad view in the place) and a menu that has more than your typical burger/nacho/pizza options. Â The steak tips were great! Â Soo tasty and well cooked. My friend also really enjoyed his fish and chips. Â Service was ok. Â Sitting at the bar, we had to flag the bartender down a couple of times for refills on a not overly busy night. Â Bathroom was not the cleanest either. Â It was only 8 or so on a Thursday (not sure why it was so dirty) and this is a bit of a pet peeve for me. Â
I would definitely come back - great place to catch a game and have drinks with friends.
Braintree was lacking a Great spot for casual drinks with terrific food. Southside Tavern has accomplished that in a Big Way. Terrific Bar & Wait staff with some great specials to watch for. Hands down the best coconut shrimp I have ever had.
Always some entertainment going on with Great Trivia with the largest prize I have ever seen. DJs and Acoustic musicians every week.
Southside, thanks for saving my behind during the Blizzard. You make a FANTASTIC Upside Down Cake cocktail that knocks my socks off! I was dying of boredom until we decided to walk over. It was bumpin', not a ton of people working, yet they managed to maintain a decent pace!
You also make a mean Screwdriver.
Can't wait to try your food!
Tipped off about this sports bar at our hotel. Â We were looking for a place to watch a play off game for the Pats. Â We were treated like one of the locals. Â Our server was attentive without hovering. Â The food was good and exactly as expected. Â It was such a nice experience I stopped to tell the manager what a wonderful experience we had....even though the Pats lost. Â I'd visit this restaurant again.
Review Source:Went in for dinner on a Friday night-- didn't have to wait for a party of 4 at 7:30. The bar was packed so we grabbed a table. The bar looked fun and I loved the design so will be back to check out! I never went to to JJ Mulligan's but Southside has a nice, modern pub decor to it! The food was delicious--highly recommend the buffalo chicken wontons AND the reuben was the best we've ever had as others have said on here! The waitress was friendly and we never had an empty beer-- she even remembered what each one of us had (I know it's not a huge deal but it's the little things!), and she never rushed us-- even on a Friday night when we wanted to wait to order the entrees until we finished the appetizer. Will definitely be back!
Review Source:I go here quite often (I'm a trivia fanatic and their Trivia Tuesdays is great) and this is a quality sports pub. Â The food is good and the menu is diverse enough. Â The Buffalo Chicken Wantons are unique, and equally awesome.
My only complaint, and the reason it doesn't get a 4, is because of the service. Â Over all, the staff is just blah. Â They waitresses and bartenders seem unenthused, as if they'd rather be anywhere else in the world than at work. Â Also, they have an ongoing 20 oz. Coors Light draft special for $2.50. Â One night, my table of 5 ordered 5 CL drafts. Â The waitress came back and said they were out of it, there was a new keg but it was warm and foaming so it'd be like an hour. Â We asked if we could get Bud Light or anything else for the same price and she said no. Â A - kegs don't get delivered to bars warm; B - customer service should come first. Â If it were my bar, it would have been a round free on me.
Otherwise, it's a pretty nice hangout with solid grub. Â I'll definitely be back. Â Just don't rely on the staff for a friendly smile or kind suggestion.
You define a business not by the mistakes they make, but more importantly, how they handle them. Mistakes are inevitable.....
Its the little things... My friend and I stopped by Southside for a couple beers and their steak tip egg rolls. Â We were welcomed warmly with at smile and brought to our table.
We immediately ordered two beers and the egg rolls because the waitress let us know the kitchen would be closing soon. My friend and I hadn't hung out in a while so we were chit chatting for about 25 minutes til the waitress came over and asked us if we had received out egg rolls yet. We said no, but not to worry cause we were in no hurry and fine.  We understand that things happen and in the grand scheme of things it really wasn't a big deal to us. A few minutes later our egg rolls come out and the manager was carrying them.  He was extremely apologetic even though we really were not bother by the mix up. He bought us our next round of beers and explained that even though we are not upset, it is still something that they take seriously.
I felt the need to write this because I admire people that do what is right, regardless of whether the customer is FREAKING out of not.
The food is above average for a pub. Â The menu isn't huge, but with that said, they do their menu well. Â
he service is pretty bad..a few friends have said they've received good service but it seems like everytime we go we get stuck with the waitress that comes along every 20 minutes, especially on game days, expect to wait forever for another beer. You are probably better off asking for 2 at a time. Â
Big fan of the california burger and the steak & cheese egg rolls.
I can't get over how much this place has improved since it was Mulligans. Its the same on the outside pretty much but when you walk in you find a nice bar, with tons of TVs with all sorts of sporting events on. I would have given Mulligans 1/2 a star but I'm really impressed with the new place. I'll be back!
Review Source:The food was good, the service was exceptional, the location is great 9right around the corner from the house), but the only thing that I was very, very unhappy with was the fact that they seated us right next to a section of the restaurant (basically inside the boundaries) that had been blocked off for a birthday party. Â We were served fast and we ended up eating relatively quick so that we wouldn't get caught in the middle of the party (we hadn't brought a gift - that's how close we were!) Â In fact, we finished just seconds before the birthday girl came in and we got up and went around to the bar side of the house to find the waitress and pay the bill. Â We're looking forward to going back, but looking forward to not being caught in another birthday party un-prepared!!
Review Source:This place has definitely greatly improved upon the bar that they replaced, but everything was just so meh that my expectations weren't met. I went on a Friday night for dinner and drinks. We were seated quickly as not many were in the dining room, but it took awhile for the waitress to greet us. When she finally did I ordered a drink from the cocktail menu which included exactly what was in it as far as liquor went. When the check came, the waitress had charged me the $9 for the cocktail and then a $3 up charge to get bacardi. She did not ask me if I wanted to change the liquors and $3 on top of the cocktail price is ridiculous. This isn't Boston. Other than that the food was just okay. Can't really mess up a burger or mac and cheese. The waitress was attentive the rest of the meal and the atmosphere was great as was the beer and booze options, I just can't get past making a tiny subpar mojito $12. Apparently the people of Braintree love it because it is still very busy most days of the week, but I would recommend sitting at the bar and skipping the dining room.
Review Source:This place recently open this year and was total transformed to a  ultra chic sports bar with nice picture windows on the bar side of the restaurant.. It boast plenty of flat screen TV's to watch a sporting event here, the bar side does get extremely loud when they have the volume up. It is all high top tables & stools in this section.
They carry a lot of different bottle beers & have a great selection of martinis too.
The dining room can hold a lot of people however there are no booths what so ever.
I came here with my girl & guy friends last night, (Friday around 8:00pm). We got seated right away, but I think after a certain time, they do start checking ID's. which at my age, I love getting carded. :)
We started with the Buffalo Chicken Dip. Shredded chicken with melted cheeses baked, served with vegetables sticks & tortilla chips.
on the Entrees, we got 2 pizzas to split between the 3 girls, it is a traditional pub thins crust  pizza, mushroom & sausage and plain cheese. Nice & Fresh with  gooey, cheesy love. One of the guys got a Bacon Cheese burger, which came out a perfect medium rare & was huge, you can get a choice of regular fries or sweet potato fries & the other got a Reuben that was piled pretty high.
The food was great, but the service is very inconsistent here, the waitress in the dining room was great but later in the night we moved over to the bar area & our waiter sucked. we wouldn't see him up to 15 minutes at times even after placing out drink order. But he was right there with the check when we were cashing out for the night.
Hey, we went back to give them a second chance! Â The service is still excellent, the food was much better than the first time. Â Too bad they couldn't do something about the loud mouth who clearly had too much to drink.
A good spot to hit when you want affordable food, and enjoy the sports bar vibe.
We go out to dinner frequently and I must say, SouthSide has impressed us...
Went there on a Sunday afternoon and had our one year old with us, staff was soooooo accomodating, bringing a high chair right over...The chili as an app was outstanding, even had tortilla chips with it, wowzaa!!! Entrees were reasonably priced, brew selections were great...we'll be heading back soon...my even mentioned: "I think we'e found our NEW local place..."
I ate here with a few friends during a weeknight. First and very importantly the staff is very friendly and attentive, which is a huge change from the old regime. They (being the new ownership) did a pretty good job on the new interior, maximizing the space, making it open and airy and easy to watch a game from most vantage points. Â We had a few drinks and some food. I can only speak for myself, but the menu is sorely lacking in inspiration. I understand that the place is more sports bar than restaurant. The theme being simple bar/comfort food. It lacks a bit of creativity and inspiration. Â That being said, i had a slightly above average entree of chicken parm, with the typical over cooked pasta and a nice tasting sweet and subtle marinara.* Note to chef- If your cooking dried pasta ahead of time ( which is understandable ) have your cooks shock the pasta earlier. Either that or use fresh pasta. A couple more seafood items more geared toward the summer, would help as well. Â Not everyone wants fried and heavy fare.
As far as the atmosphere- the place has big potential, but the main issue is the volume on the music. It is at a club level. I understand you may want to turn it up later in the night, but when you have games still on and people still eating, why would you blast the stereo? No one was dancing!  I had to ask my server several times to repeat what she said as did the rest of my party.  It's unfortunate, because this could be a great neighborhood place  to watch a game and eat. The atmosphere of good places like this, is always made by the quality of the staff and conversation and comfort of your customer.  The saving grace to the place was the friendly staff (especially are waitress)  and the positive vibe. I'll give it another shot. I wish you good luck.
Better than the Brew House... For what it's worth. Standard bar food menu and a handful of craft beers by the bottle.
Does this Trivia Night dude have compromising photos of every bar owner in town.
Overall.... Meh.
The Four Square Tavern in Weymouth Landing has much better food, better brew, and a more desirable atmosphere albeit with the "Final Answer in 30 seconds" Trivia dude.
Food is just OK- Ive tried a few options- nothing special.
They have a full bar which is nice and a good atmosphere- not a dive bar. It looks and feels much nicer than the previous bars. The big windows in the front that open in the good weather were a much neeeded change- way to go 4D construction.
The bar side gets very busy and its a small space so pretty hard to move around or find a seat- not such a great flow but im not sure that there are a lot of ways to fix that. They promote "specials" but they are hard to find/read up on the board.
My major issue really was the noise level. It is sooo super loud in there. I don't know if its the metal-like celing tiles or the pitch of the roof or just the loud patrons but man is it loud in there. Not a place you could take a date.
Another issue is that they don't seem to be very good at shutting people off. Seriously Ive been to the Southside four times since it opened and each time I have seen people who are way over the limit. Last time I went there was a female who everyone was talking about. She was hitting on tons of guys and annoying the bartenders. Everyone was talking but nobody shut her off- WTF? At one point she was out in the street. No really.... out in the street walking around and her purse was on the bar. I went and talked to our server (Tim I think, who is super nice) about the situation and asked him to take care of it. He in turn spoke to the bouncer and manager about her. Gues what happened..... nothing. When she came back in she went right back to her stool at the bar and continued drinking- what a piece of work.
I'm sure I will end up at the Southside again whereas it seems to be the IN place to be now in Braintree and I'm sure it helps that the owners are nice local guys in their 30's (that why I origianally went in, support locals). I will make sure to be super careful leaving the bar whereas I feel that they over-pour.
(First time we went, day 2 of being open, we were all pretty taken back at how many spelling mistakes there were on the menu- seriously so many. Hopefully when they change up the menu they will also change the person making them.- Just Saying)
Went here on a Sunday night after a big bruins game around 8:00pm. The place is small but I enjoyed the improvements and renovations they made from the previous place. Looks like they have removable glass windows in the bar area, which will be awesome in the summer time. When we got there my boyfriend and I noticed an empty bar high top table open up and decided to grab a seat and have a few beers. We noticed some people eating in the bar, but mostly they were college aged kids drinking. Â We ordered our first round at the bar and then sat down. Staff was attentive, but we felt very rushed while there. A waitress came over several times to see if we needed more drinks or if we were going to eat. We ordered another round from her and a different male server brought the drinks over. When she came to check up on us 5mins later she asked if we wanted anything else, which we politely said we were cool for the time being. She then promptly brought over our check for the two beers. We had intended to have stayed for at least another beer or two, but having received our check so quickly we felt rushed and decided to leave instead.
Review Source:I had a later dinner here with a friend a few weeks after they opened the Braintree location. Â We shared two apps- the fried pickles, which was a HUGE portion served with a dipping sauce...very tasty, crispy, and well-battered- and the nachos appetizer, also gigantic but fairly standard. Â I did enjoy the pico de gallo on top, better than your average salsa. Â It was our waitress's first night on the job but you would have never guessed. Â Very polite and personable. Â Th only issue we had was that it took a while to get our check at the end of the night.
Another night I tried to come here for drinks but the bar was just too crowded so we left. Â This place seems like a nice addition to the South Shore bar scene, but I guess you have to get there early! Â I'll try again.
Update 4/17/12: Very classy & professional!
After my initial, lukewarm review, the manager sent me a very nice e-mail through Yelp addressing my concerns. Â I am extremely impressed. Â If Southside is going to continue to be responsive to the concerns of patrons, this may work out well.
The food was pretty good. Â A little on the pricy side, but the cheap drinks balanced that out.
Service was interesting; the young lady who waited on me fell all over the two parties of gentlemen sitting at the bar to my right, but couldn't be bothered to refill my water glass without being asked (apparently there is still a stigma connected to being a woman eating alone). Â I would have rated the service there more highly, but when asked by one of the men at the bar - who was a regular at JJ Â Mulligan's - if any of the former staff is working there now, she replied, "Oh no. Â We didn't want to carry over any bad habits." Â A statement like that struck me as rather unwise since she had no idea who was listening and admitted that she never met any of the JJ's staff. Â On the other hand, she very kindly got me the WIFI password when I asked her. Â The rest of the bar staff seemed nice enough.
One minor gripe: the walkway. Â Instead of being accessible from either side, it shoots off to the right. Â This is a minor quirk, but it still seemed a little weird. Â It felt like going all around the mulberry bush just to get in the front door. Â
Overall, Southside lacks the warmth of the old establishment but the renovations are gorgeous, drinks were reasonably priced, and the food was okay. Â I would stop off there for a drink if I were in the neighborhood, but I won't rush back. Â If you are under 30 you are probably going to love the place.
i went here this past Saturday with some friends to watch the Bruins game and drink some beers.the new bar set up is a vast improvement from the old JJ Mulligan's set  up. with the new windows it really brightens up this place. it reminds me of bars in Southie. The prices were a little high but i would definitely come back. The macaroni and cheese was also pretty good.
Review Source:We went here for lunch on a Saturday. I think it might have been their 2nd weekend open. I was so impressed with how it looks inside. Great transformation from JJ Mulligans. I loved the bar set up and there are TVs everywhere you look.
I was also impressed with the menu. We go to the South Side Tavern in Quincy now and again (only bc it is in walking distance to our house) and this menu is double the size. I had the chicken parm sandwich and I thought it was really good. Wasn't in love with the fries but steak fries have never been my thing. L got the turkey club and he was also happy with it.
Service was great. Our waitress was very sweet and on point. Even the bus boys were on point with taking away empty drinks and plates. I thought we'd have to be patient while they ironed out the kinks as most new restaurants do but while we were there everything was flowing great.
Only thing I didn't like was how high the bass was turned up. I get that you want it to be a trendy place but there's no need for it to be that loud at 1:30 in the afternoon especially if your trying to draw in a lunch crowd that isn't in the early 20 category. I saw the owner go and turn it down once but it still could have been lower. You could barely hear the music at some points over the bass.
Food and service were great, we will definitely be hitting this location up more. I just wish they could get the same menu at the Quincy location so we didn't have to drive to Braintree!
