Su Casa is what a Mexican restaurant should be! Great quality mexican food combined with lively mexican music and colorful decor.

If you get there before 3pm, you can catch the lunch special and spend almost no money on a great meal. The chips come out hot and tasty with a slightly spicy salsa. The bar is stocked with everything you'd like to drink with a super fast bartender that instantly recognized me after only 1 visit.

My drink never fell empty, my food was out quick, and I spent only $7 on the entire meal.

You'll find me here anytime I'm feeling mexican on my lunch

Nothing special about this place. In fact, I could probably make better Mexican food then what I was served here.  I wanted to come to this restaurant because I had my first date with my current boyfriend and wanted to recreate memories.  Neither of us remembered what we ordered, so we didn't have any expectations.  I'm pretty sure that I won't come back here.  I ordered the veggie burrito and my bf ordered the cheese enchiladas con salsa verde.  The food was nothing special, it was ok.  For the price though, the food should have tasted better than what I can make myself at home for a fraction of the cost.

Not sure what the bad reviews are all about. This place is solid. It's exactly what you should expect given the outside decor. The food is good and fairly priced. The chips and salsa are above average. Margaritas are great and potent. There really aren't many places like this in the area, so it's ideal for a decent mexican meal with free chips and great margaritas.

    Been here a few times.

So you have a choose in this area for Mexican you have places that make a burrito (bowl) and you are on your way, the way too expensive to regularly eat there, or this place.

It is not fancy, but it is sit down and they do have booze. The lunch specials are a fair price for the area, and taste good. I usually get cheese enchiladas with mole sauce.

Service is usually quick and the staff is nice.

I am a very big fan of Spanish foods, so I know the differences between authentic and fake. This had more of an artificial Mexican taste. I got the fajitas and my food was cold. I tasted like it was taken out of the fridge and put in the microwave. It was a while ago so maybe it has gotten better but I did not like it at all. I will not waste more money on this place to give it another chance. There are many other Mexican restaurants in Chicago (like Lalos). If you do not want to be disappointed, go there!

I was here on Wed night and was surprised by how authentic and delicious the food here was. The chips and salsa came out real fast and quickly subsided my hunger until my chicken fajitas entree came out. The chicken was tender. and juicy however i could have used more vegetables. The beans were just ok. My friend and I also ordered Margaritas which were a pretty decent size. The prices are cheap and it's a great place to go if you need to bite your mexican craving in the bud. it's also open pretty late so great for those late night eaters. I def recommend it.

The food here was authentic and awesome.

I had the fish tacos. They came out piping hot!!

My girlfriend ordered the enchiladas with red sauce and she loved them.

The Horny margs had me "faded" ha.

Great cheap river north Mexican spot

My boyfriend and I were staying at the Conrad and had ventured over to David Burke's for a few drinks since we love their innovative craft cocktail menu.  After a few drinks I was hungry and their kitchen was closed, so I looked on my Yelp app for someplace nearby.  On our way there we stumbled upon Su Casa a couple of doors down from David Burke's and decided that since it was open, we should just eat there.  It is a good thing I did not check my Yelp app, or I would have been scared away based on the reviews.

Su Casa is not bad.  It is just cheap Americanized Mexican food that would would find in any typical chain.  The service was great and the atmosphere was adorable, so that has to give it some bonus points.  I ordered a strawberry margarita and we shared a two appetizers.  The chile rellenos on the sampler were much too spicy to eat and I like spice.  I think they accidentally stuffed some habaneros!

Delicious two marg lunch while on vaca in October 2012. Chile Relleno fantastic. Endless delicious chips and salsa. Will do this place again to try all the other wonderful delights on the menu.

I went here Thursday night around 6:30 with my mother. The place had about 5 other tables of people there, so it was not busy at all. We were sat immediately and waited for about 15 minutes to order. Our waitress passed by us a number of times; it was really odd. Oh, and the super odd thing was that she wrote her name on a napkin and handed it to us saying "that is my name." How bizarre! we waited literally less than 5 minutes and our food arrived. It wasn't that stellar, but not bad. The service was just so slow for no reason...
I might go back again but i wont expect much.

Nothing special it's an okay place if you are looking for some Mexican food, but i would call it a more upscale Taco Bell. Chips & Salsa are served, but was a little iffy on the freshness as the chips were rock hard. The best part was the margaritas as they were mixed pretty well. We walked right in Friday at 7 and was able to find a table, the crowd was mainly young adults all dressed casually. I'd recommend just going do Qdoba if you are looking to crave some Mexican food.

Walked in off the street and knew I should have turned around the second I saw the poorly decorated Christmas tree. The wait staff was very unfriendly didn't even refill our drinks. The food was bland and expensive. I had the steak burrito with extra jalapenos I would suggest if you are looking for Mexican food go to el burrito Mexicano in Wrigley.

Four stars for this wanna-be tex-mex for the Su Casa Classic MARGARITAS! I wouldn't say come here for a over the top meal, but if you want some chips & salsa with a good buzz... this is your place!

We've been here a few times and when I order an entree, I normally get the fish tacos... very filling! It comes with three, but two will satisfy my hunger.

This place is in the middle of a shopping, bar, and hotel area. Staff is friendly, bathroom is SUPER small...

I didn't think it was possible to have a mediocre meal in Chicago, but here I am writing this review.  The place is off the Magnificent Mile on your way to Gino's East and Al's #1 as well as a Portillo's so even though you're close to a tourist area there are still spots with good food there.

We were recommended this place (we'll never be taking recommendations from them again!) and we headed down to try it.  The place looks small on the outside and had outdoor seating but it's really large on the inside.  I believe there is more than one dining area.

We were seated promptly and had a water and menu in no time flat.  We looked over the menu and I ordered one of the fiesta combos...I'm not sure why I just did.  I kid you not our food arrived at our table in 10 minutes which was awesome as we were heading to the Bears game.

The enchilada and tacos were pretty bland.  The tamale was really dry and the chimichanga was also bland.  I don't know if we were here on an off night but the food was really mediocre.

The service though was good and the staff, very friendly.

Came here a little while ago with another couple for some quick Mexican Food and wanted to get our fix, but left feeling full but not necessarily satisfied. So, here is the scenario, the vibe is very authentic, I really felt like you were in a bar/restaurant in Mexico city with the mariachi music, the ceramic tables, the colorful Mexican images on the walls as well as the intricate figurines, definitely an authentic atmosphere. The music was a little loud for my taste as we had to basically yell at each other to get a good convo in, but overall it was a fun time.

We ordered the guacamole, which was okay, a few margaritas, which always call for a good time, were they out of this world? Absolutely not. Go to Mercadito for killer margaritas and I mean killer in all sense of the word. Then we had flaming hot fajitas with corn tortillas and sauteed veggies, which were yummy, but nothing was like soo good that I'm dying to go back there. It's just a fun place to chill with good friends, but get ready to scream at them since it can get a tad loud, but the food isn't outstanding. Service wasn't bad, but I'm not going to be back anytime soon just because I prefer Big Star for my authentic fix and Mercadito for my modern take on Mexican.

Bland ground beef tacos, pre-fab tortillas, refried beans from a can. The only thing genuinely Mexican here are the people. They're nice but the food is awful.

This place was fine but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again. The vegetable fajitas were just peppers and onions with sour cream, pico de gallo and guacamole. It would have been nice to see some other vegetables in the mix. I can get this meal at chipotle, and I wouldn't even have to assemble it myself.

Service was good. Place looked clean enough. Prices were high for what you actually get.

The margaritas are the saving grace of this place. Upgrade it to a higher level  of tequila and they are pretty darn delicioso.

I went to Su Casa with my visiting Mother, mostly because it is across the street from Trader Joe's. The hostess was friendly and seated us quickly in the mostly empty restaurant. It was about 2:30, between rush periods, so I did not think anything of it. It was a comfortable, cool temperature inside (yay for A/C on a hot HOT day), and there was some upbeat Mexican music playing, not loud at all.

The complementary chips and salsa were brought to our table, drink orders were taken. The chips were nothing special but were not stale or anything. The salsa was not too spicy and quite good. It had some tomatillo flavor, too , which I thought was a nice touch.

Our waitress was also friendly and had no problem taking or correctly placing our order. We received our food minutes later--very prompt service.

I ordered the vegetable chimichangas, which I thought, contrary to what a reviewer below said, were quite tasty. (The inside was an innocuous mixture of peppers and onions and cheese, probably monterey jack, nothing "foreign" or "never-before seen"). The rice was pretty standard but was cooked properly. The beans were a small portion but also quite tasty and not smothered in cheese (there was some, just not an oozing mound). My mom ordered the chicken burrito, which she thought was very good.

Both meals very very generous portions and not too pricey (about $13 each), but during peak lunch hours they would only have been $7, a great price for the amount of food. They also had a number of other specials on the table that I thought about trying. Perhaps next time. They also had a number of margaritas and drink options (next time, as well).

Overall, I was very satisfied with the quality of the food, service, and value at Su Casa. I can't speak for authenticity or the drinks, but based on my experience and what I ordered, I would certainly eat here again.

I can't believe how many bad reviews this place has gotten! I've been here a couple of times. I'm a New Yorker, and I come to visit my Chicago friend every so often. I come from the city which has the *best* food in the world! Out of all the Mexican places I have ever been to, this is by far my favorite. It has the best food, fresh, clean, I NEVER feel sick after eating here. Their portion sizes are generous, their prices even more generous, the food is absolutely fabulous. Loved their margaritas too! I came here for Cinco de Mayo (completely accidental, by the way...) and the service was decent.
Long story short, this is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago and my favorite Mexican restaurant period. I won't tell my friend this, but I only come to visit her for Su Casa...
Bonus Story: I have a family friend who absolutely loathes Mexican food. He likes to tell me this often because he knows I love it. Anyway, I was telling him I just got back from Chicago and what restaurants I went to. Before I even mentioned Su Casa, he proceeded to tell me how Su Casa is the only Mexican restaurant he has ever liked!

This place is horrendous. The fact that it continues to exist is an abomination, particularly in the heart of Chicago's River North neighborhood. Why is it that the THE WORST MEXICAN FOOD i've ever had happens to be located so conveniently? When the place closes down, you can be sure I will be there with a Pinada ready to celebrate.
Last night was my second time there- not that the first time was any good at all, but I figured i'd order something different and give it another shot. Our waitress was abysmal, we had to ask 4 times to get water, we were given our Queso appetizer without any chips. The amount of flaws this place has goes on and on.
I ordered the Fiesta Combo, which comes with: 1 taco, 1 enchilada, 1 tamale, and 1 chimichanga. I asked for no beans (beans gross me out) and only rice with my meal.

The waitress didn't bother asking me what i'd like in each of my taco, enchilada, tamale, or chimchanga. Rather it was just given to me (with beans and what must have been a pound of sour cream). The chimichanga was vegetarian, with cheese and some green veggie I had never seen before. Possibly the GROSSEST thing I've ever tasted in my life.
1 star doesn't even begin to explain the frustration and inedibility of what was on my plate.
    AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

Not bad. Avoid the chicken in patty form and you'll be ok. Chimichangas and Guac are good.

There is a reason this place has two stars..  Because it deserves that rating.

I popped in on a walk one day to have a margarita, posted up at the bar, and watched as the bartender poured a premix in a blender.  He then turned it on for maybe 2 seconds and slid the drink down the bar to me. Needless to say the drink sucked and cost $12.  Just margarita with some ice chips that would quickly melt soon.

Ended up back on the street with a stomach ache, not exactly what I was looking for.

If you are looking for over the top Mexican, then not for you.  If you are hungry and need an authentic margarita, then yes.  Easy to get in and affordable.  The margaritas are made without all the added sweet stuff.  I recommend giving it a shot.

This place was ok to beat the heat. I think I was on the verge of a heat stroke when I entered this establishment...the food made me feel somewhat better..

I ordered two enchiladas - one chicken, and one beef. I was SO SAD to see that the beef enchilada was ground beef. I HATE GROUND BEEF. I was expecting the beef to be shredded... I still ate it and everything else was ok.

I have lived down the street from this place for YEARS and have never tried it out- and today was the day we decided to give it a go. I regret that decision 100%. The only thing that was good about our lunch was our server. He was very nice and very efficient. The food was tasteless and the atmosphere was disgusting. We had dirty silverware, something was floating in my water before I even took a sip, and we had an abundance of fruit flies swarming around us. I understand it's hot- it's summer- windows and doors are open- bugs are able to come and go as they please. The amount we saw was absurd. I got sick to my stomach. We paid over $27 for a tasteless lunch (that we hardly ate) and ran out the door.

I wish I would have read the reviews prior to trying it out. I would be $27+ richer.

Charlotte T.'s review mirrored exactly what  I was going to say, so I won't repeat, but I will be a little less generous with my stars. The service was not good, and the food overpriced for the quality. Also, it was freeeeeezing in there! Like, uncomfortably so.

Heads up- a strawberry margarita is $8. The prices for their alcoholic beverages are  not listed on the main menu.

Are you downtown? Are you tired and hungry? Do you want to by pass an hour long wait for a table? Do you just want to sit down and eat some FOOD?

Yes? Su Casa is for you. It is nothing to rave about, but this resaurant will put food and drinks in your system when other restaurants in the area make you wait.  For that, I give this restaurant a good review. Yes, the service could be better and the prices are slighly too high, but you are downtown where it is crowded and expensive. Deal with it.

Su Casa will fill your belly with tacos, burritos, and margaritas in a fun, family-style atmosphere. After a long day of sight seeing and endless walking, who could ask for anything more?

So if you've ever read a review of mine...It was most likely of a Mexican resturant...and I most likely ordered margaritas, quac, and pork tacos. It's who I am! However, I didn't even get to the tacos. I bailed after tasting the salsa and one margarita. I am not a bailer and I am not an overly picky eater.

The salsa was off color and had relatively no taste, the guacamole was bland. Although the margarita was okay, it was over-priced. Chips were from a bad, and tasted stale. There I said it. I don't like writing negative reviews, however I consider this a public service announcement for tourists like me.

I guess I am spoiled by my Milwaukee favorites....

Looks like I just gave my first one star.

If I could give Su Casa negative stars I would. I went for lunch one day on the recommendation of a very close friend with whom I eat A LOT of  GOOD Mexican food with and I THOUGHT I could trust.  I have now realized that my friend is probably suffering from schizophrenia or some other psychotic mental disorder.  If I would have checked the Yelp reviews before walking the mile to the restaurant I probably would have suggested something better ... dumpster diving perhaps?

When we first walked in I knew we were in trouble due to the fact that there were only a few tables occupied at noon on a Wednesday.  The second sign that things were going to come crashing down pretty quickly was when our waitress came back to our table not once, but TWICE to take our order after she ALREADY had.

My friend that I was eating with is a pretty tiny little girl and since i already had a pretty clear picture of what I was in for we opted to split two appetizers and a lunch special.  We ordered the appetizer sampler, a con queso dip for the chips and the fish taco lunch special.

I asked the waitress if the fish tacos were any good and she said, "It's fish."  I wasn't sure how to take that.  Hoping it was just a language barrier issue we went for it anyway.  Big mistake!

The appetizer sampler consisted of :

    1. Two "nachos" which were two microscopic round tortilla chips covered in shredded cheddar, microwaved and then topped with a small slice of pickled jalapeno.

    2. Two mini chicken "chimichangas" that was dried chicken breast (possibly even canned chicken) rolled up with nothing else in it covered in a tortilla and fried for maybe 3 seconds.  (the outside was not crispy or crunchy but more along the lines of a stale tortilla)

    3. Two "jalapeno peppers".  I think these were supposed to be like poppers except the ribs and seeds were not removed and they had also been subject to the lame frying attempt as the chimis.  I did attempt to eat one of these but the first bite set my face on fire.

    4. Four mini tacos.  These were the only things edible although by no means good.  They were four tiny hard taco shells filled with ground beef and covered in some kind of cheese sauce.

The Con Queso Dip was literally just Velveeta and Salsa mixed together and microwaved.  It actually congealed half way through lunch.

Everything in, on and around the fish taco was gray!  The "corn" shells even had a grayish hue.  It looked like it was a white fish that they tried to bread and fry but I can't be sure since neither of us even dared to taste it.  The breading (or possibly skin?) was peeling away from the fish and clumped up at the bottom of the tortilla.  I wanted to pull the waitress back over and ask her if she was sure that "it's fish".

All in all it was a horrible experience.  I spent the sweaty mile walk back tot he office texting all of my other friends to tell them how I had just had the worst meal of my life.  Also that we need to check our friend in the mental institute, stat!  Do NOT eat here!

Although Su Casa has pretty low reviews, I really really really enjoyed my chicken chimichangas.  Call me fancy, but I'm from southern california where you can get theeee best Mexican food in the world.  It was served with a side of refired beans and brown rice and everything had great flavor.

This restaurant did a great job of making authentic and tasty Mexican cuisine, so I was happy.

I was super excited to try this place which was recommended by some trusty natives that have never steered me wrong.

The decor and vibe were pleasing but my gut sunk a little when I noticed it was occupied predominately by tourists.  Where were the locals!?!

We were seated promptly and brought the tradition chips and salsa.  The salsa was really good....not too watery or too thick....good heat.   The chips were large and well done.

At this point in the meal, I'm excited..... I'm eating authentic Mexican in the big city!

I ordered the classic margarita on the rocks.  My compadres ordered the strawberry frozen.  Hey whats that?!  Yum, real tequila and lime without the super sugary syrup flavor.  The anticipation is getting out of control...should I get the burritos....the mole.... enchiladas

In the end, I opted for the blandest option=the burritos.  I had to play it safe I was in a out of town bath room situation.

And then our food arrived.....and...well.  It wasn't so good.  All four of us were pretty underwhelmed.  It reminded me of Chi Chis or some chain nonsense....processed....not fresh.....underwhelming.

Most likely I will never eat Mexican food in Chicago ever again.

The chips were horribly stale. The food was fine but not much more impressive than a taco bell (fake cheese sauce smothering everything).

After we were done eating the server cleared our table then went to talk to the other servers for over 20 minutes while we waited for our check. We tried catching the many people who walked by (we were the only table in the restaurant) but everyone ignored us. Finally we got up and walked up to someone in the kitchen and asked for the check.

Later that night, i woke up vomiting. I am from the southwest, I know Mexican food. I am also an experienced restaurant manager. This was the biggest waste of time and money.

I don't even know where to begin.

I guess I wish I would have checked yelp before going to this place. It's not good at all and my phone was to dead for me to figure that out.

I ordered a margarita and it was the worst I've ever had! I'm not picky and can get through anything but this margarita was undrinkable. After ordering some cheese dip that resembled burnt velveeta we decided NOT to order dinner.

I guess I wish that the owners read this so they can make some obviously necessary changes.  The location is prime, the building is inviting and the decoration on the inside is charming. Has potential and needs to represent Chicago's reputation for having great food.

Sometimes you work downtown and you want an enchilada.  Nothing fancy, just an enchilada or two for lunch, maybe even with mole.  If you work where I work, this is where you go.  If you don't, maybe you're extra  cool and have something better.  Good for you.

Yeah I know where to get better Mexican, but not in this hood for this price.  Their mole is pretty tasty.  This isn't a destination joint, but if you're in the area and this is an option it isn't necessarily a bad one.

Why, Su Casa, why? When did you become so terrible?

Guac: totally pre-made & refrigerated, served cold (hence, 0 flavor) on wilted lettuce leaf.

Queso Fundido: lukewarm, chewy & globular with only a sprinkle of chorizo. You took the fun out of fundido, now it's just queso dido.

    I love Mexican. But you're a Mexican't. **tear.**

I went shopping on this fine spring day with my neighbor and decided to dine at Su Casa...If only I had looked up this restaurant on yelp first, but no, we had to learn the hard way...Quality of food is TERRIBLE and sanitary conditions are sub par.

$ 5 knock off velveta queso dip that was cold and hard by the time it reached the table...

Pureed chicken from a can wrapped in a flour tortilla labeled as a burrito...

$7 water with a splash of poor quality tequila labeled as a Margarita with table salt (not margarita salt)...

Slow service with no clue how to handle tables outside and wiped down table with a dirty paper towel yuck...Then my neighbor found a hair in his water glass...ewwww  I don't want to know the sanitary conditions of their kitchen

The deep fried tortilla chips were ONLY upside to the experience...

I REALLY wanted to like this place.  Everything about it screams authentic: from the bright inviting colors of the exterior, to the authentic "mission" style decor of the interior, to the friendly hostess that sat me and my friends.  But, all of that can't make up for the mediocre food and terrible service.  Let's break it down: They started us off by giving us chips and salsa along with water.  So far so good.  Next, our waitress asks if we're ready and we ask for some time to look over the menu, everything's still good. This is where it all goes downhill.  Our waitress must have forgotten about us because 10 minutes later we're still waiting.  Finally, we get the attention of the hostess and ask for our waitress to come back.  Does she apologize or say anything?  Of course not.  Anyway, we order our food and off she goes, without saying a word.

Speaking of food, what's with the chalupas?  Ok, ok, this place is downtown and needs to be somewhat accomodating to tourists, but chalupas?  I don't think I've ever been to a mexican restaurant worth their salt that offers chalupas.  This isn't taco bell.  Anyway, so the food comes, and its ok.  It wasn't the best mexican, but it was par for the course.  That is, until an hour later when I'm back in my apt and have a stomach ache from hell for the next two hours.

But back at Su Casa, its time for us to pay our bill, which turned into a big ordeal (don't ask me how).  We needed to split the bill three ways, but only two of us have cash, so we decide that we'll put all the cash towards the bill and the rest on the card, and the person with the card will pay the tip (which people who paid with cash have already accounted for).  So our waitress comes over, and I say "the rest on the card".  Now, our waitress is no young teenager; she's well into her 40s, so one can assume that she's heard that statement before.

So she takes the bill and says "ok".  Minutes later she brings back the bill, and has charged the card twenty dollars, and has taken NONE of the money.  Who is this woman??  Where did twenty come from?  Why would I give her money with the card and her not put it towards the bill?  Needless to say, she made everything much more complicated than it needed to be, and we left.  Little did I know what my stomach would be in for an hour later....

bottom line: I'll stick to restaurants in Pilsen and any other places that are not targeting midwestern folks looking for "authentic" mexican food.  (Chalupas???!!!!)

I'm really not one that goes looking for bad places to eat. I used to frequent Su Casa and thought it was OK ... despite the weak and flavorless Margaritas, the expense of flavorless Mexican food and the glaring lack of service.

Then I found The Blue Agave.

Believe it or not, there are differences among Mexican diners and once you have dined at both you'll better understand that. But why bother when there is Yelp and there is a whole pool of people who will tell you that Su Casa, despite its convenience, should not be your first, second, or even third choice when it comes to this type of venue.

I'm glad it is called 'your house' and not mi casa, because I'm not sure that I'd want people reviewing mi casa.

Alright, the waitstaff were a bit rude when I was in here. Service was terrible, and everyone was running around like they were on speed even though the restaurant wasn't even half full. We literally had to wave someone down to get a refill or whatever. They also had no chips due a fryer breakdown. Chips, salsa and guacamole are like bread and butter for starving patrons rolling in from the streets. Run to Jewel or something..or Close for the day! Fryer breakdown?! C'mon! That is like telling people you have no tequila!  The veggie fajita that I had  was ok, but I wasn't that impressed with the salsa or 'su casa' in general.
