You know, I was hungry and there was nothing in the area that looked like it would fit the bill. I have wanted to try this place for years and the reviews were pretty good. I had the king club and a medium soda that was bigger than I expected. The sandwich really didn't do it for me. It had an unusual taste to it and it was only turkey beef and capicola. The bread was a bit doughy for being a cold sandwich. The place was clean, but I would pass next time and keep driving.
Review Source:We need to head over to my folks for a visit. Not only is it their 61st wedding anniversary day but also my Dad's 83rd birthday (a few days early). Well after a nice visit my wife says let's get something to eat. We recently saw that Chicago Best episode about the Hot Spots to eat in the south suburbs. Now even though I'm not too thrilled with the male host, he hams it up way too much. I will say Brittany Payton is really cute! So Maria says let's head over to The Submarine Port in South Holland. They highly recommended the soups and we do LOVE our soup.
So as usual we have a huge order. We start by ordering two bowls each of the Cream of Chicken with Rice soup (this was average tasting soup kind of thick with lots of chicken, rice and carrots) and the Beef vegetable soup (a little bit watery but with good flavor and a good amount of potatoes, pasta, lighter on the veggies and beef). Each set of two bowls runs $4.98 so almost $10 dollars for the soup in total. Then we order a Port sub (Ham, Salami, Capicola, American and Swiss Cheese) (a good zesty italian style sub); Club sub (Roast Beef, Turkey, Capicola, American and Swiss Cheese) (a good sub that Maria liked, nothing special she said but a good sub); Submarine sub (Ham, Salami, Spiced Ham, American and Swiss Cheese) (again another good average sub); Combo sub (Roast Beef, Corned Beef, American and Swiss Cheese) (I thought this was probably the best sub we ordered of the day, it had the right mix of corn beef, roast beef and mustard, and yes everyone in the family allowed me to sample their subs, yes it is GOOD to be Jerry); Seafood and Crab sub (whitefish and crabmeat mixed with celery and mayo) (another good average sub); Tuna sub, (which Maria and I started eating right away on our ride home and we both thought the mayo was nice and light without the tuna being dry, which really made for a good sub); and finally a Turkey sub, (which both my youngest daughter and I thought was another good average sub, we have had better turkey subs but we have also had worse). Our total bill came to roughly $40 dollars. Which I thought was pretty good for seven, count em, seven subs and four total bowls of soup.
The service was friendly. The young girl who waited on us was new so it took a while but she got everything together in the end. Overall I would recommend Submarine Port if you are in the town of South Holland or even in the nearby area. But if not then definitely do not go out of your way for a visit. There are better places in the south suburbs whether for subs or something else.
Saw a great review on Chicago's Best so tried this place out for a late Fri night snack as I was driving home from a family get-together. I must say that I completely disagree with most of the reviews. I had an Italian Chicken Sub with Chicken Rosa Marina soup and found both only marginally edible. Low on flavor and the sub had been microwaved whole, giving the bread a disgusting chewy consistency. The soup was largely missing the main ingredient, ie, chicken. Dined there with 5 others and noone found their food more that just marginally edible. My advice for you when you are desperate for a sub: go to Jimmy John's or Subway -- not that they are that good, but they are way above this place. Oh, by the way, the service was terrible too.
Review Source:This place is probably my favorite find so far in South Holland. Being put on a project way out south isn't always awful, especially when you find a good little sandwich shop. I went with the turkey combo and it was mighty tasty. The combo was under $6 and it came with a sandwich, soup, and a drink.
The sandwich itself was good, but not miraculous. The bread was soft with fresh ingredients. I think a little more crunch to the bread might have worked. The soup was out of this world! It comes in a little drinking cup, but you could tell that it was homemade. There were large chunks of chicken in every spoonful. I really liked this place and I'm sure I'll be back to try the corned beef.
Okay, so I work in the south burbs. I know, kind of a pain in the butt, but it definitely has it's perks. Submarine port is one of them.
They bake their bread fresh daily. Good old italian or wheat. No pseudo fancy asiago basil infused BS a la Subway. They aren't stingy with the meat either (are you listening subway?) Topped with super fresh veggies. An order of fries translates to a giant ass bag of fries. Shoestring variety, frozen but still pretty good. Absolutely get the side of cheese. Don't get the garlic ones though. They're mega salty. Homemade soups. Classic chicken noodle is my favorite. They also do shakes and ice cream cones.
A no frills kind of joint that has a drive-thru so I can stay in my car and jam out to my ipod. All in all, one of the more solid lunch options in South Holland.
This was the first place I discovered when I moved to South Holland back in 2001. As stated the corned beef sandwich is really good. And trust me there aren't many good corned beef places around here (if you know of one email me--directly!). But let's get to the soup. It is great and sometimes I go there and order just a soup to go. You can easily miss the sign shaped like a submarine when you go past so be on the look out.
Review Source:i vowed to only eat out once a week while at work and when i do, i splurge and go to submarine port. Â i usually get the combo which comes with a sub, soup (can substitute for chips and i think even a salad), and drink. Â the total usually comes up to $7 and some change. Â
so far, i've had the corned beef sub and the seafood salad sub. Â both are very yummy and i think a part of it has to do with the bread. Â so soft and tasty.
they have a drive through which is convenient but at 12pm there's usually a lunch rush and the drive thru gets real full...
i will definitely have to try out their other subs and soups.
YES
thats almost all i have to say about Sub Port. Â It is a CLASSIC in the suburbs. Â If your in the area please please please stop by and grab one of their amazing subs, a sack of cheese fries and there "large" (their large is like a bucket) Â I love most of their sandwiches but the Ham and cheese sub is my number 1 sure to fill you up pick. Â To top it off this place is open till like 3 in the morning... so after a long night of...O i dont know... reading to old people, you can swing by and pick up a filling dinner. The owners are awesome and once youve been in there a few times they will probably remember your order. Â
Hands down my favorite sub joint this side of the Mississippi.
***** PLEASE NOTE JIMMY JOHNS DOES NOT FALL INTO THE SAME CATEGORY AS SUB PORT.... CAUSE WE ALL KNOW JIMMY JOHNS IS THE OVERALL GREATEST PLACE TO EAT EVERY IN THE HISTORY OF EARTH*********
