The price is right on. After a weird thing at the local Wendy's where they said our money was counterfeit (but the radioshack took it) we decided on the Chinese Buffet down the street. I'm a skeptical buffet goer but my buddy and I were hungry, so oh well.
We got there around 8 or so and it was obviously the end of the night but I'll go for the positives first. $12 per adult means the price is right. For what it is, this is a good price just don't expect any sushi or super high quality stuff. The coconut shrimp were pretty good although a little heavy on the sweetness I had 2 helpings (I thought it was weird they put imitation crabmeat with it but it was still good). :) The pork dumplings were yummy as were the shrimp wrapped in chicken, and shrimp wrapped in bacon. Fried wonton was pretty yummy.
Downer foods? The american stuff was hit or miss. They must have multiple chefs because one moment the steak was tough and unyielding, the next alright. One plate of meatloaf was good, the next off. Even the shrimp with chicken was seasoned weird when I went back later. Obviously someone in the back is a better chef than the others, but that can happen anywhere. The fried shrimp were pretty tasteless and since I'm not a fan of condiments I was let down but my fellow eaters didn't mind just adding soy sauce or tartar sauce. Also there is NO real crab anywhere in this place, not in the crab cakes and not mixed in with anything. It's all imitation here. Also I didn't try the soups because it was getting close to closing time and I could tell they'd been there for a few hours.
The regular chinese staples are there and just as good as anything you'd get from a corner store chinese spot in Philly.
All in all it wasn't the best I've been to, but it definitely wasn't the worst and even with the misses there was something for me to eat. I would go here again.
5 STARS 5 FREAKING STARS!!! Â Was I even going to the same restaurant as the other reviewers? Â Let me explain why:
(1) Only $12 for all you can eat. Â This is a very cheap buffet.
(2) This place combines standard Chinese-American fare with soul food and even a few Caribbean-influenced items, and it does both well. Â You can pick up chicken with broccoli and hot and sour soup, and then get yourself some cornbread and collard greens, with a side of fried plantains. Â And surprisingly, the collards, cornbread, and plantains were good.
(3) Seafood. Â I ate a whole, whole, small fried whiting -- very fresh and delicious -- crayfish, clams, two mussel dishes (one hot and in sauce, one cold and plain). Â The mussels and crayfish were delicious. Â The clams were tough but tasted good. Â There are like 6 billion shrimp dishes and they're all good...they have plain cocktail shrimp. Â They had salmon too (not my fav.).
(4) There's a full salad bar...and by full, I mean full...tons and tons of different salad-y items. Â And it's good!
(5) There's just other random stuff floating around...including some decent-looking meat which I didn't try...there was even a ham to carve. Â There were some buttery, bready bun things that were light and quite tasty.
(6) The desserts? Â Whoa whoa whoa. Â Chocolate-coated peanut butter almond cookies? Â A selection of Italian-style cookies, some also dipped in chocolate? Â Little mini cake thingies with many different layers of cream and icing? Â Fresh orange halves, seedless and already peeled for you? Â And they have Chinese donuts. Â One of the dessert cakes was dry and bland, but the cookies and another cake were both exquisite and more than made up for it.
This place is decadent. Â Yes, it looks a little bit skeezy, but come on. Â Get over it., Â It's twelve freaking dollars! Â Where else can you stuff yourself on fresh seafood, soul food, Chinese food, and salad.
And I'll say one thing. Â I stuffed my face here, and I came out of it with a clean, fresh taste in my mouth and a settled feeling in my stomach, had a good night, and woke up the next morning feeling quite good. Â Not a bad outcome for eating this much food at a sketchy-looking buffet like this one. Â I'm definitely coming back here.
i went here with a friend after seeing a movie down the street from here. i'd seen this place before but never went there. we were looking to get fed and this seemed to be the ticket.
the food was okay, there was a variety and it wasnt bad. the only reason i'm giving it two stars is because the service kinda sucked. first off you cant get your own drinks cause i guess that's how the servers make tips by bussing the drinks. however to flag a server down is a bit of an annoyance. but the main reason it gets a less than stellar review is that the server who bussed our table when we were done asked us outright for the tip, which was beyond rude. given the price per person for the buffet and the fact that it wasnt exactly gourmet fair, they should be happy that we obliged to give them a tip based on the bus service since we got the food ourselves.
frankly i prefer a buffet that takes your money, lets you eat whatever the hell you want and drink whatever you want and leaves you the hell alone unless you ASK for something.
next time i hit the movies out this way i'll take my chances with the food court inside the theater.
