The sushi is mediocre and overpriced. Soup was lukewarm. If you have a child, be prepared to wait for a long time while they prepare the child ghetto behind the partition for you. They'll cite "fire code" for the reason, but it's baloney, of course. We've given this place three chances, and I really think that's enough.
Review Source:This is from memory, since I haven't been in a few months. I've been three times in the past five years. It's the most expensive sushi place in town, and the one that attracts the most Japanese-speaking Japanese patrons, which surely counts for something. I've enjoyed it every time, although once, when I came in right as they opened, my fish was still frozen on the inside. That was a serious black mark, but coming just minutes, and I mean minutes, after opening, it was forgivable. I still like Kamitori better, probably because it's more easily accessible being right smack in the middle of downtown, but Domo's good for any serious, fussy fan of sushi.
Review Source:Teriyaki tofu was awesome... Vegetable tempura roll was good, without the cream cheese. I didn't appreciate having to fill out a slip for the rolls, because there was no room to write special orders. Luckily the tofu appetizer was so good, I forgot all about that, and we left with full happy bellies. They also had wheat free tamari available upon request, so that was a big plus for my gluten free friend.
Review Source:Loved this place! Not authentic in every way, but it's a great place for a bento lunch. For a very reasonable price, I got hot tea, miso soup and ginger salad, tempura veggies and shrimp, a couple pieces of California roll, teriyaki salmon with vegetables and a bowl of rice. I also got some hot sake to warm me up on a rainy day and it was really great. I would definitely go back at dinner or lunch for a reasonable value in a nice atmosphere. Probably one of the best Japanese meals I've had in Eugene so far.
Review Source:it was a total disaster.
we waited an hour to get burned Tonkatsu and waited another half an hour to get my sashimi
I asked them to re-do Tonkatsu and they brought back the same not so burned part of old Tonkatsu and mixed with new ones.
I don't care about the price if its worth it, but you could get this quality of sashimi/sushi quality pretty much anywhere in Eugene.
and its price range is just absurd.
I ordered big assorted sashimi (chef choice) about 14 pieces for 33dollars
and only okay sashimi of 12 of them was salmon. (they don't even give me one eel. NEVER EVER order sashimi here. they simply dump left-over parts of sushi to sashimi. I even saw rice attached to one of my sashimi)
i waited 100minutes and they didn't say sorry or gave me Edmame or such
if you want rolls, it would be okay choice like 3stars. but not for actual Japanese food or anything else. They have crazy many selection of rolls but nothing else
SERVICE SUCKS
FOOD SUCKS
PRICE SUCKS
I AM NOT GOING BACK.
Tried this place out last night because it's near where friends in town live, and because Kamitori was slammed.
It's a bad sign when a sushi restaurant is 3/4 empty in the middle of the evening, and the server still takes 10 minutes to bring water and menus.
The rice with the nigiri sushi was dry and crusty. Most of the fish was tasteless. No wasabi on any of the nigiri sushi. The unagi was cold. The miso was at least acceptable.
The server, looking sheepish, offered to bring us another miso for free (not nearly enough - we declined), and promised to "berate the chef." Berating the chef in a place like this wouldn't begin to address the issue (assuming the sushi chef would even listen to the very young server to begin with). The problem in this place is systemic.
In thirty-five years of eating sushi, this restaurant ranks in my all-time bottom three. Never again.
Great place! Reasonably priced, helpful and nice servers, and fresh sushi! We had some rolls and the seaweed salad which was so delicious and crunchy and also included marinated cucumbers. The ambiance is quiet but it's in a strip mall so the location is a bit blah, but the actual restaurant is nicely, though simply, decorated. The blue lights behind the shelving give it a relaxing, cool vibe. Go here if you're craving a nice casual sushi experience, not to be seen or have a fancy dinner.
Review Source:I'm no sushi expert but--I loved this place! Â Wonderfully tasty options! Â If you have family members who are sushi adverse, this might not be the best choice. Â My daughter and I especially enjoyed the pickled veggie salad together, but this is not a place I'll be able to get my mother to ever return too. Â I found the service pleasant.
Review Source:I could live off of Sushi and for a summer I basically did have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If Sushi Domo was the only place for sushi in town, I still wouldn't waste my money on it. I have been here multiple times and gotten to go from them as well, it has always been so so...Last night was the last time I ever pay to get sushi from them. $43 down the drain, the rolls were not evenly sliced, they were falling a part, the seaweed was CHEWY! seaweed is supposed to be crispy! I was beyond disappointed, if I lived closer to them I would have taken it back after the first bite. Service was bad, when I called to mention the rolls were supposed to be 8 instead of 6 they told me the menu online was wrong and hasn't been updated...okay so are you going to offer to fix it...nope. Finally had to ask how they could fix it, after discussing it with them for a bit we finally gave up and just dealt with the loss. The miso was okay but not the best.
I won't be going anywhere for sushi except for Sushi Pure and Izumis now, I know it is great from these two places. Pure has better service compared to Izumis though so that would be my first pick.
Don't understand how they can rank #1 in eugene's best sushi...my guess is the people voting haven't had good sushi so domo is the best to them.
Utterly Disappointed:(
Salad came with dead bugs--dead ants (that's right--ants, not just one). Â When we pointed it out to the waitress, she just brought a new salad with... you guessed it--ants. Â I expected that they would comp something or offer a discount--nothing. Â The service was pretty poor as well. Â They didn't have a lot of staff, but the restaurant wasn't that busy either.
This was our second visit. Â I don't like to make rash judgements--you never know if there's just a bad night or something. Â Unfortunately not, this will be the last time we go here. Â The rolls didn't impress me either. Â They were okay, but I have had a lot better.
This was a decent place for sushi, though I'm not sure I would "rave" about it. It seems that the regulars knew what to order for lunch, but I was new so I didn't, and got kind of a weird assortment. "lunch special" wasn't all it was cracked up to be and my waiter was less than knowledgeable about the menu.
For the same price as Izumi, I'd much rather go there. Much better atmosphere and more straightforward menu.
love this place---I go here with my girls and we love to get the Heart Attack; Mexico City; Eugene Roll; Vegas Roll and Phili Roll......top that off wtih a couple of beers----YUMMMO
I highly recommend the Heart Attack if you love spicy and jalapenos! My 15 yr old loves it.
Great place to go on a date or with a group of friends.
To My Future Husband,
Can you take me to Sushi Domo por favor? Â I'd love you long time if you did ;D
I wanna go with just me and you, cause it's a nice little quaint place (not so good with groups). Â We will kinda sit elbow to elbow with the people next to us, but the deliciousness of the food will make up for it. Â It's the best sushi place in Eugene...
Don't forget your wallet cause I'm going for broke when we order. Â Each roll is average $10, and there are at least 4 that I want; Red Bull (Shrimp Tempura, unagi, avocado, garnish, smelt roe & special sauce), Titanic (Shrimp Tempura, tuna, salmon, crab, avocado, asparagus, spicy aoli, & ponzu sauce), Lobster (Spicy tuna, cucumber, crab meat, baked lobster & stuffed lobster top), & the Heart Attack (Spicy tuna, jalapeno, cream cheese & sauce). Â I like the crazy rolls, but if you're more traditional they have that too (like california rolls and stuff). Â There like 30+ different sushi to choose from.
But if you don't like sushi at all, they have other entrees too; Katsus, Udons, Tempura, etc...the typical Japanese food. Â I liked the Spicy Chicken and the Ukaba (BBQ Unagi). Â Even the entrees are like $7 - $10, decent size portions.
I'm a huge sushi fan, and prefer the crazy/elaborate sushis. Â For people that aren't sushi-eaters probably won't like it as much but I LOVE it. Â But let's try and got before the rush cause it's typically busy and I don't feel like waiting.
Always & Forever,
kaibemi buks
I heard that this suppose to be the best sushi in town. Â That it may be. Â Went here with RJ and MW for lunch. Â Service was decent, nothing special, but nothing bad. Â A large diversity of different types of sushi. Â I appreciated that the ginger was not dyed. Â Small things like that I notice with my sushi.
Overall decent sushi. Â Naturally will not compare to sushi I've had in Okinawa, Hawaii, SF or LA, but for Eugene, best I have had so far.
Overrated!
I am always shocked to see this listed as the best sushi restaurant in town.
I have been there numerous times and have always walked away disappointed.
If you are looking for a deep-fried, fake crab, mayo bomb then this may be the place for you. Â If you are a true fan of sushi and quality Japanese food then look elsewhere.
I was sick and they gave me miso soup. Â Pretty much all I want when I am sick is miso soup.
They have some very inventive vegetarian rolls- not just the usual acocado and cucumber. Â The one I got had both of those, but also shitakes, sprouts, radish, and a couple of other things. Â
I left there not feeling quite as shivery and icky as I did when I entered.
This is one of my two favorite sushi joints in Lane County. Â The sushi is fresh, delicious, presented well, and there are a variety of different choices for fish lovers or vegetarians. Â
One thing I will note is the customer service is very hit or miss and the majority of the time we have been there it's been a miss. Â Please note, if you are in any sort of hurry don't go here. Â You will run late. Â If you are just going out for a leisurely eat with no time constraints no worries!
After not being to Domo in about 2-3 months we went for dinner last weekend. Â I was dissapointed that their rice seemed old, in both texture and taste. Â Also their sushi seemed to shrink a little. Â My wifes' non-sushi selection was good but not spectacular.
I had some Nigiri and Maki. Â The Nigiri still had great flavor and freshness, but it seemed smaller than it had ever been. Â The Maki saved the day, the Spider and Spicy Tuna were very good. Â The Cracker Roll was what saved this review from being a complete lynching.
This place used to be my favorite. They have really creative rolls, and good other food as well. Their ginger honey tea is the bomb. Â
Recently, they raised their prices, putting it out of our regular price bracket. Also, I went there with a large party, and one person got rancid wine, and there were 2 mistakes/omissions from our order. Maybe this was all a fluke, but the high prices do make me a little sad.
Sushi domo used to be our spot for sushi until Izumi's opened. Â They do have good rolls, tight, fresh and tasty. Â What drives me crazy about this place? Â Their hours of operation!! I mean come on, why the hell would you be closed at 2pm on a Saturday? Â They also have some screwy times where they're open for lunch, but then close a few hours to get ready for dinner. Â Really?? You cant make that preparation without staying open?
The one time we ate at the restaurant we were treated like hell kinda. Â The waitress was short and flip with us. Â I dont remember conversation, but I remember my wife being pissed off at how rude they treated us. Â Which is why we would opt for take our vs dinning in.
They used to be the main hook, but there's a new sushi slinger on the block, and they've took all our business AND THEN SOME....*cough* izumis*cough*
I was gonna knock them down to 2 stars, but their sushi is good so they can keep the 3rd
As a resident of Seattle, moving to Eugene meant knowingly sacrificing a lot of Asian foods and it was in fear that finding a decent Japanese restaurant would end as a hopeless journey, but then Sushi Domo allowed me to rejoice once again.
Although a bit more expensive than expected, the quality of the sushi was a bit above average which was unexpected on my part since there are fairly few Japanese restaurants in the area. Portions were a bit small and ended up ordering the agadashi tofu just to prime myself for the rest of the meal. The tofu was delicious, above average from a number of places that we have tried including restaurants in Seattle, but the sushi itself was on par with some of our favorite places as far as quality. Atmosphere within the restaurant was inviting, but its odd location in a strip mall type of setting initially threw us off.
So, here is the verdict: Sushi Domo is worth trying if you are not incredibly worried about price and it has now set the bar for the rest of the Japanese places that we hope to be visiting in the coming months.
I went here for dinner recently, and overall I think Sushi Domo is a fairly good place to eat. Â The only complaint I'd have is that the prices seem somewhat high - Many of their 2-piece sushi offerings are between $4.00 and $5.00. Â I could see easily spending over $10 here to get enough food to feel full. Â Another thing I thought was disappointing is that on Saturdays, they don't open until 4:00PM. Â I was hoping to go here for lunch on a Saturday at 12:30, but they were closed.
I tend to prefer conveyor-belt sushi restaurants, but this is not one of them. Â However, all orders are prepared to order, and the flavor is good. Â The quality seems fairly good, too.
Overall, I think this is a good restaurant, and I would eat here again.
Sushi Mushi My
Well some of the sushi is excellent.
But it is fusion so do not expect lots of traditional dishes.
One is creepy - Eugenian - deep fried sushi with cream cheese.
One of the dishes had little fish eggs and some very hot spice. My tummy did not feel well for 24 hours afterwards.
The California rolls are delicious.
I will not go back. It is expensive, portions are modest.
Service is soso.
The first time we ate there was a nightmare for my dish. I just should have cancelled after the 3 rd time they brought it back and it was still screwed up.
Nice folks, but I would not recommend eating here.
So my friends and I decided to head to this place because it had the best rating here on yelp. Â Well, I'm starting to learn that Eugene food still has a ways to catch up to my old favorite places up in Beaverton. Â
Honestly the food was pretty good. Â I had the Shrimp Killer roll--3 styles of shrimp, drizzled with sweet unagi sauce. Had no complaints about it's taste! Â I also got Negi Hama which is a roll with yellowtail tuna and green onions. The Negi Hama exceeded my expectations for they served eight rather large pieces in comparison to other places for about $5. Â My one main issue is that I wasn't full and had to order Zaru soba afterwards as well. I did like how the soba came with lots of cucumber and found that really refreshing though the dipping sauce seemed a bit too sweet.
I think Domo has the best sushi in town. Even over Sushi Pure. The problem is the strip mall location. Once you go inside it's much better though, they've done a nice job with decor. Â The sushi selection is HUGE and everything is quite delicious. Service is great too. Â The only detractor is the strip mall location- but they make up for it in sushi freshness and selection.
You want atmosphere- Sushi Pure
You want the best raw fish & selection- Sushi Domo.
Sushi Domo offers the second-best sushi in Eugene - but like other Asian food in Eugene, it leaves a lot to be desired.
On a strictly quality-of-food basis, I'd give Sushi Domo three stars on the Eugene scale. Â The fish is pretty fresh, though the portions associated with each piece of sushi are rather skimpy compared with better sushi places, and sushi is pretty basic stuff; for the most part, if the fish is okay, the sushi's okay. Â Sashimi is another story; the fish isn't good enough to stand alone, and now that skimpy thing begins to irritate a bit more. Â Still, the food is alright.
Otherwise, though, Sushi Domo fails miserably to reproduce the traditional sushi experience. Â The atmosphere is sterile and American-feeling, the service ranges from indifferent to downright incompetent (they've gotten my order screwed up twice out of four or five visits), and in general the place does not feel Japanese in any way.
Sushi Domo isn't terrible and it's affordable as sushi goes - but you get what you pay for, and what you pay for isn't much. Â Skip this place and head to Izumi, which is better.
UPDATE: Â I've been back with friends a couple of times since I wrote this, and although many of the downsides persist, Sushi Domo was a bit better than I remembered...or maybe it's just been too long since I've had sushi in San Francisco, where there are actual Japanese people. Â Either way, one can easily do much worse when it comes to Asian food in general (or especially sushi) in Eugene. Â The atmosphere still sucks (it's a little better at the Southtowne location, but the waitress was insufferably rude on my single visit there) but the food is a decent value. Â Go to the Green Acres restaurant and share a Family Boat with some friends.
"Service to befit a trashy strip mall"
Their "Volcano" roll is a delight and they do an excellent job with spicy tuna. Â You'll be safe with the basic rolls too. Â Domo's nigiri is fresh, though in smallish portions; same for the sashimi. Â They're fine, but usually I skip these and just go straight for the exotic rolls.
I've been going here for three years and while the sushi has been consistently good, the service has consistently been poor. Â I'd expect busy on a Friday but even if you show up on a Tuesday at 4:45, it'll somehow take you two hours to get through your dinner. Â It's not that they're rude - they're not... but they're constantly understaffed on both the wait staff and kitchen sides. Â
Domo is not too expensive for the quality of sushi, but given the setting (it IS in a trashy strip mall) and the poor service, only rates as a fair value. Â Then again, if you've got a hankering for sushi and you don't mind taking some time for a meal, give it a shot.
I like this place. It's not as fancy as Izumi and I kindof like that if your in the mood for a quiet sushi dinner with the hubby or something. Their prices aren't too bad and the fish is fresh. They could stand to hire a couple more servers. They are always running around like it's the busiest night they've ever had, every night.
This place is good. I'll be back.
Probably just fine by Eugene standards, but I think anyone used to doing sushi in SF, Seattle, or Portland will end up let down. Â I did enjoy the Dynamite roll, but the top was the messy and kinda gross. Â Seaweed salad was served with a layer of pickles (wtf?). Â Edamame was oversteamed and mushy. Â The salmon on the Philly roll was mushy and almost like salmon skin. Â
But I have to agree the biggest problem is the service. Â It's not a big place, yet with a nearly fully house on a Friday night, the staff seemed overwhelmed. Â Our group was 7, so after arriving we got led in to the side room only to find someone sweeping up who explained it wasn't ready yet.
After coming here a dozen times I can say this is my favorite sushi in Eugene.
The fish is fresh and they clearly don't spend the profits on decor.
The rolls are tight and and the service is allright. Weekend nights can get busy and I still haven't gotten used to driving to a north Eugene strip mall for good sushi, but I keep coming back until someone else does it better.
I'm really surprised this place has received such mixed reviews. For our first Eugene sushi venture, I scoured the reviews and decided on Shiki. When I called, I discovered their number had been disconnected. Perhaps someone can confirm they've closed? At any rate, warily, we decided to try Sushi Domo, since it wasn't too far away.
We were stoked. The sushi menu was really impressive. We ordered a a sashimi plate and several roles. Everything tasted fresh and clean. The house salad I had wasn't terribly impressive (mostly iceberg lettuce), but the ginger dressing was tasty. Â The Dynamite Roll was especially indulgent--the entire roll was tempura fried.
I can't speak for the rest of the menu, which seems to be what has received the most criticism. That and the service, but our service was fine. Â Don't be afraid to try this place :-)
Korean/Japanese restaurant near delta highway... I thought the sushi were pretty good, and the Korean soup tasted good also.
The people were nice, but service was very slow.... We asked for a spoon to eat noodle with, and they didn't bring us to spoon before we finished eating.... and the food came out pretty slow.....
Overall, the food tasted alright, especially, when you compare it to restaurant nearby.
Some things are just relative. Â Like how my 6th birthday was great, but it didn't hold a candle to birthdays 8 and 9. Â
Sushi in Roseburg is simply not an option. Â So when you're in Eugene for the day (after being stationed in Roseburg for 4 weeks) sushi there is pretty damn good.
The people were nice, we were seated quickly and the rolls were great. Â Not the best I've ever had, but relatively speaking it was awesome.
The only bad thing I can say about this place is that they are a little expensive.
With that out of the way, the sushi I had here was absolutely fantastic, the atmosphere was good, the staff was attentive and friendly, and "large beer" is an understatement... you get a massive Sapporo in a massive mug! I will definitely be returning for a special occasion. They cater well to vegetarians... I bet even vegans could find something delicious here. I definitely reccomend making the trip out to Delta Oaks for this place!
I really like sushi and had heard about this place and took a friend who had finished her master's degree as a treat for her.
The wait was really long. I made sure to only order things with out avocado as I can't eat it and made sure to double check with the waitress.
After a really long wait all my rolls came with avocado which I can not eat.
The manger came over and only offered to make one of the many rolls over even after the waitress told her that I have especially ordered rolls with out it!
Not only slow service, but bad customer service.
I will not go back there again.
I can get better sushi done right at another place, and will!
Best sushi I've ever had. Â Not to say that I'm a real experienced sushi eater, but this far surpassed anything I'd had before. Â We just ordered a bunch of random rolls off of the menu and couldn't have been more pleased with the results.
The atmosphere is kind of weird. Â Instead of a fish tank there's big screen TV that plays a fish tank DVD on loop. Â We were even lucky enough to witness two testosterone driven males try to impress their dates by yelling insults at each other from across the restaurant. Â It went on so long I was surprised they didn't get up and start beating on their chests King Kong style in an attempt showcase their dominance.
Go eat amazing sushi and the locals may even provide you with some entertainment for the evening.
Laura H. dragged me to this place last weekend. Â
Wow. Â I am not usually a sushi guy, but this stuff was delicious. Â I don't know how "authentic" this is--probably not very. Â Being brutish Americans, we passed on the nigiri and the sashimi and ordered a selection of rolls instead. Â
Is this "innovative" sushi? Â I think so--the Crazy Roll contained shrimp, crab, avocado, asparagus, and coconut, and was served with three different sauces: ponzu, unagi sauce, and another that I don't quite recall.
The "Volcano" was a mountain of California rolls covered in a "sauce" (lava?) of tuna sashimi, smelt roe, and bits of tempura batter. Â
Also had was a roll containing saba, and a vegetarian roll that concealed a very hot pepper. Â
Prices were incredibly affordable and the atmosphere was cozy. Â
I'd definitely go back.
I'm giving this place 5 stars because the sushi menu is really quite impressive & you would never think to go there otherwise--it's out in weird Goodpastureland in some dilapidated strip mall.
I didn't try the main dishes because I was so overwhelmed with having to choose which rolls I wanted. Â Most typical sushi places will have a bunch of rolls consisting of some combination of the following: avacado, cream cheese, cucumber, tempura shrimp, crab salad, eel, tuna, yellow tail, salmon roe. Â And that's it. Â Domo is a totally different story. Â They put things in their rolls that I've never seen (nor would have ever thought would be found in sushi): tempura coconut, asparagus, broccoli, cilantro, etc. Â It's nuts. Â And they pay more attention to sauce accompaniment than any other sushi place I've been to. Â
Sushi Domo surprised the hell out of me so much that it knocked Mio Sushi (Portland) out of my illustrious "2nd favorite restaurant to get me some catipillar roll" ranking (Takahashi on 103rd & Holgate is still in 1st). Â
In conclusion: go.
