I've long heard about taco trucks from my friends in L.A... self-contained kitchens on wheels that can set up shop anywhere. Â I'd just assumed that for whatever reason, taco trucks were a California phenomenon. Â This is no longer the case. Â Since about a week or so ago, a white box truck has parked alongside the curb in front of the parking lot at Supermercado El Guero on Archer, with big gold letters proclaiming to passersby, "Taqueria Azteca de Oro - Â Los Angeles y Chicago." Â
Two panels on the sidewalk-side of the truck are lifted to reveal windows showing the kitchen. Â Orders are placed at a window, and tacos, tortas, and burritos are prepared on a grill in front of another window. Â A small shelf below the windows holds tubs of lettuce, tomatoes, onions and chopped cilantro, salsa verde, and napkins, straws and utensils. Â The tacos go for $2, burritos for $4. Â You can definitely find tacos for less at some places, but when operating out of a truck, rounding up makes sense, and the tacos are very generously-sized. Â By the time you add your toppings, they'll become a little unwieldy. Â Plenty of people seem to manage, though, with half of the customers taking their tacos home, and the rest eating theirs right on the sidewalk. Â
I had the carne asada tacos. Â They're not going to knock my favorites off my list, but they're much better than the tacos from the brick-and-mortar taco joint by my house. Â Cans of Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite are available, as well as aguas frescas. Â The limonada tasted very fresh and not overly sweet. Â
I've only seen the truck after nightfall, and I forgot to inquire about their hours. Â I'll definitely go back the next time I'm in the mood for tacos L.A. style.
