I love mexican food but OMG I had never had food so nasty like this.
I had a taco de asada which was horrible no flavor on the 1/2 an ounce of meat they gave me. I also had a chicharon gordita which tasted like the chicharon was boiled in water instead of salsa. It was soggy and flavor less. My husband had a quesadilla and the only good part about it was the cheese. And for the drink we had Agua de horchata it was so nasty it tasted like they added water and milked to make more.
Let's not talk about the bathroom it was disgusting they were all wet the flush handle was liking there was not napkins or hand dryer floor was full of wet paper.
And to top it up they don't take credit or debit cards. Over all it was a horrible experience I would never recommend this place to anybody.
I've eaten here twice once having the chicken enchiladas w/mole sauce the second time the asada taco.
I was disappointed in my first visit as the enchiladas were more bland then yum and found the rice and beans less then yum and did not have Taqueria La Kermes high on my list for another visit.
However on Labor Day I found the folks at Taqueria El Milagro were not laboring but instead closed  so I decide to give Taqueria La Kermes another try.
The chips and salsa did not interest me and I was wanting to try the tacos al pastor but was informed they were out so decided on the asada tacos and was quite pleased.
The service was good and the overall ambiance was so so but I'm not as big on ambiance as I am food, service and price and the latter was quite resonable. A private lot is a big plus especially in the city and even more so in the city's Little Village neighborhood where street parking is more rare then a Republican alderman.
My second visit has notched up Taqueria La Kernes up in good places to eat at in the Little Village and look forward actaully to try the tacos al pastor
I love this place!!!!! One of the best Mexican restaurants I have been to. I only had a few things to try here, but everything I tried was delicious!
First off, the place has A LOT of seating, all of it booth seating, so it was very comfortable.
Second, service was really good. They have A LOT of servers here so the food comes out fast.
Third, their kitchen is really BIG and looked really clean (at least from where I was sitting). This is awesome because I knew my food would be fresh and clean.
Fourth, free parking in their private lot. Does it get better than this? Free parking in Chicago is always a major plus!
Now on to the food.....I had the beef tongue taco. The meat was very tender and delicious! Other people in the group ordered the asada (beef) and the pollo (chicken). Â They ran out of pork so that kinda sucked. Â Each taco was only $1.50!!!! What a steal!!!! The food also came with complimentary guacamole which was SOOOOOOOOOO CREAMY AND DELICIOUS! I am definitely coming back here!
I stumbled in here completely on accident; as I got off the bus, I assumed the restaurant in front of me was my intended destination, El Milagro. (Note to self: at least glance at the address of the place I am entering...) However, I was not disappointed by this random taqueria; plus, I get to be the first to review it!
When I was seated in the booth and opened the menu, I realised my mistake. However, I turned my error into an adventure. The inside of the menu was full of pictures; the options were more like meals than a la carte items. Unfortunately, they were clearly beef/chicken/seafood/etc. So, how do I explain that I want a vegan dish? Oh, it would behoove you to speak Spanish here, as only one of the waitresses understood a little English...
In plain type on the front cover were a couple typical small items, such as tacos and gorditas. Nopalitos (cactus)! I could eat that. So as I was explaining to the waitress "sin carne, sin crema, sin queso, solamente las verduras...", she suggested I get tacos con aguacate (avocado), which wasn't even listed. Sure!
The tortillas were perfectly pliable and tasted fresh, and the avocado was excellent. I think there was a whole avocado on each one - what a deal! The flavourless tomatoes and iceberg lettuce didn't do anything for me; next time I'll be sure to ask for some cilantro at least. The salsa was light and fresh, not too spicy at all.
Chips and a cup of soup were on the house. I eyed the soup suspiciously, as I've been told before that a soup was vegetarian, only to find chunks of meat. Here I'm pretty sure it was veggie; I triple-confirmed that there was no meat or animal broth in it, it didn't taste like meat and I don't have a tummyache. It had orzo and little flower/star shaped pasta.
They have a couple fresh juices/ aguas frescas on the menu, including horchata, orange and carrot. Too bad they asked me what I wanted to drink before I got the menu... Next time...
Quick notes about the ambiance: The restaurant is actually really large; they had only half of it open when I was there. It'd be good for a party with all of your relatives. Univision telenovelas were on a handful of TVs. Crepe paper and balloons added some red, white and green. There was a pretty textile Virgen de Guadalupe piece of wall art.
I got everything, which filled me up, for under $5 total. I'll be back!
