Came for dinner with my boyfriend last night. Â I loved it.
We split a bottle of Malbec. Â Love the wine rack right as you walk into the dining area. Â There was no wait, but we came in after 8pm. Â
Had the cheese board to start. Â So good. Wish there were more crackers to go with it though.
I had the hangar steak which was with peppers and onions on top of mashed potatoes and surrounded in a pool of deliciousness, some sort of herbed oil broth and my man had the strip steak.
Both were awesome. Â Can't wait to go back except for the upholstery on the booths, the pattern is dizzying and can give a headache!
I was a little nervous going since I'd read some unfavorable reviews, mostly based on value for $$ and service. Â But since everyone has different tastes and opinions, I figured I should try it for myself. Â
We ordered a cheese board to start which was for the most part pretty tasty. (Again, personal preferences factor in). Â The entrees we ordered were chicken with spaghetti squash, hanger steak, short ribs and papperdelle "primavera". Â With the exception of the pasta being undercooked, we were all very pleased with all our dishes. Â The person with the undercooked pasta did not want to trouble anyone and did not speak up to the waitress. Â We ended the meal with the chocolate molten cake/hazelnut gelato and friend bananas. Heavenly. Counting in the tip, bottle of wine, two glasses of wine and a beer, our meal came to approximately $240 for 4 people. Â So yes, it's a bit on the spendy side, but worth it for an occasional treat.
I would heartily have to disagree with many people on Yelp that thought the service sub-par. Â Our service was excellent while in the restaurant and even the following business day when we needed to call back for a problem, Jason was wonderful and fast at helping us.
We just returned to Taste for what will be our last visit. We had a week old http://restaurant.com gift certificate which the owner agreed was legit but he had decided that he was not getting enough return for the gift certificates he had allowed to be sold on his behalf and chose not to honor it. This and his attitude would suggest a far better quality of food than Taste has on offer Don't Bother
Review Source:Went on a Saturday for lunch. The service was great. We started with the potstickers and Caesar salad. The potstickers were great - cooked right and good flavor. The salad dressing had a touch of garlic which made it yummy. On to the main courses.....I had the shrimp with grits. I do not normally order grits, Â but the waitress recommended the dish. I am glad I listened. My husband and I were fighting over the last bite of grits. He had the hangars steak over Yukon mashed potatoes. His dish was great as well.
Review Source:I went here with my Mom yesterday 8/14/12 and was expecting more. I picked this place because of the reviews given here and the menu listed on the website. The menu on the website is outdated and has changed.
Many of the rave reviews on here talked about the goat cheese stuffed tomatoes and the beef wellington special, of which neither were on the menu (I understand the Wellington to be a seasonal special). I particularly wanted to try the goat cheese tomatoes and was quite disappointed that it wasn't available.
I was quite happy when I Foursquare checked-in and was gifted a free dessert with your first visit. They have a special running on foursquare that gives you something free every 3 visits, only bad thing was the waitress knew nothing of this and almost made me feel like I was trying to pull one over on her. She gave me the dessert but after showing it to her, I think my service went down a few pegs. I detest places that give you attitude when using coupons, obviously the owner thinks they need the gimmicks to bring people in. The place was quite empty for that matter, only a few groups of elderly ladies having lunch.
My mother was more impressed with the food than I was, she ordered the Angus Burger and was quite pleased. I had a bite of her fries (which are cut and made in the restaurant) and agree they were tasty. I ordered the Steak over garlic, Gorgonzola mashed potatoes. The steak was fairly good and the potatoes were delicious. Nothing amazing and for the price, I was a bit disappointed as I expect a certain standard when going to a fancy restaurant. The free dessert we selected was the Creme Brulee. This was quite tasty but the inside custard was of a whipped consistency, very different and not my favorite. The custard was also very bland, without any citrus zest that gives that little extra to the dish. The sugar coating was perfectly done and tasted delicious. I have to give the restaurant some props on this dessert only because most can't do a good creme brulee, and while this wasn't on my top 5 of all time... it was still good enough to be considered top 5 in Connecticut (so far).
I'm very surprised there are so many good reviews about Taste. I went here with a group of seven people (back in February) and most of us were very unhappy with our meals. I had the chicken served with sweet potatoes (I should say potato) and I ate the entire meal and was still hungry. It was the smallest portion I have ever seen. The food was bland not impressive. After the meal everyone seemed to have the same opinion of the food and portion size. After dinner, I went home at 9 p.m. and ate some pasta, then I was full.
Review Source:Used to go all the time- like once a week all the time! Menu is a bit pricey, but good. Sit with Jacqui- she's the best.
Try to go when their special is Beef Wellington. Fan them in Facebook to find out- hands down fabulous!
Good food. Good wine list. Good choices. All around good. And a good restaurant in Hamden is hard to find!
Actual visit was 2/6/12. I had the Braised short ribs, golden beet salad with goat cheese. Â Went a second time the same week and also enjoyed my meal. Â Yelp reviews brought me to Taste and it was great. Â From start to finish everything was excellent. Â I'll be back in CT in a couple of weeks and I'll be going back to Taste.
Review Source:This is our date spot. We have loved every dish we have ever had here, Â we have been here over 20 times and its always been wonderful. Be sure to try the tuna w himalayan red rice when its in season and on the menu. The kobe burger is also fantastic. For appetizers.. the only one we have had is the pork pot stickers which are amazing! Super friendly and attentive service. The bread and flavored oil they serve is also superb. Great selection of wine as well. over all a great place to eat.
Review Source:What a great little place. Â Located in the southern part of North Haven, Taste is a nice place to go for an evening with someone close. Â I wanted to give Taste a 4 1/2 but since we can't, I think a 4 overrides the 5. Â
They make an excellent homemade oil that you can drown your bread in that is out of this world. Â We had the lamb & the tilapia. Â They were plated marvelously with such great flavors. Â We had a http://restaurant.com gift certificate which brought us here, but I would most definitely go back again.
Great beers on tap that are not your usual bar flavors with a wide variety of martini's & wine.
Check them out asap.
Great restaurant! I love the atmosphere, the wait staff, the menu, the specials, etc...
Last night the special was a beef wellington made with filet mignon, prosciutto, and beef culotte! This was absolutely delicious! I've had almost every item on the menu and have been swayed several times to order off of the menu from their specials and I've NEVER had a bad experience.
I also had the tuna tartar for an appetizer and the apple crisp with cranberry topped with vanilla gelato for dessert.
I tend to come here pretty frequently and I like to introduce friends to Taste and I haven't had any disappointing meals yet!
Went to Taste for the first time this month and had an absolutely delicious experience. I bought a http://restaurant.com gift certificate back in February, but my boyfriend and I found ourselves too busy/always with other dinner plans to use it until now. Because we enjoyed our experience so much, I bought another Taste http://restaurant.com gift certificate today, and this time, we're not going to wait so long to use it!
First, the staff was very friendly, and we were seated in a cozy corner toward the back of the dining room. My boyfriend and I were impressed by the beer and wine selection. The beer list wasn't very long, but it only included good, interesting beers on tap, reasonably priced. Boyfriend went for a beer. I went for a glass and a half of malbec.
We started off with the goat cheese appetizer - cherry peppers stuffed with goat cheese and tempura fried. They were amazing, and bursting with flavor. We'd never had peppers that sweet before, and the sweetness mixed with the gooey, salty goodness of the goat cheese was perfect. We got a pretty big serving of them, and they were very rich, so I accidentally filled myself up on just two or three. I ordered the hanger steak, which was served on top of cheddar creamed spinach with a side of smoked salt fries, and my boyfriend ordered the "three meatloaf," which was topped with roasted tomatoes and came with mashed potatoes on the side. My steak was cooked perfectly medium, tender, and juicy with a good amount of smoky flavor. Creamed spinach was delicious, and the fries were good and crispy, natural cut, with a good amount of salt - up there on my list of favorite fries ever, actually. I tried some of the meatloaf, and it was nice and spicy with the side of chipotle sauce. My only complaint would be that my steak was a little colder than everything else, but I'm guessing that's because it was finished first, and I appreciate that it wasn't overdone. I ate as much of my dinner as I could because it was so delicious, but alas, I ended up taking home a good amount of leftovers. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive and asked if there was anything wrong with my steak since I didn't eat very much of it. I assured her that it was delicious - I just accidentally filled up on the app, as I mentioned before. And I did eat a good amount of it - there was just a lot of it on my plate.
We left very full, happy, and with lots of menu items in mind that we want to come back to try.
Pasta was overcooked and both complexly described dishes of braised lamb and pulled pork were single-flavored bowls of mush. Â The banana bread pudding dessert could have been a great success but after our meals, all hope was lost and fleeing was the only choice. Â Debated on puking and rallying on down to Mikro for a better meal. Â This was a rather expensive shitty night out.
Review Source:It had been a while since we visited Taste, but we decided to go back again this evening, and it was a great move. Â
We ordered the goat cheese stuffed cherry peppers for an appetizer. Â They were fantastic! Â The mix of the sweet, crunchy pepper with the texture of the goat cheese was great, and the lime/tomato creme was perfect with them. Â
We ordered the kobe burger and the tilapia two ways. Â Both were fantastic. Â The tilapia was perfectly cooked, and it was fun to play with all the different flavor combinations on the plate. Â Surprisingly, they all mixed beautifully. Â The kobe burger was perfectly cooked and the Parmesan fries were a nice, different accompaniment. Â
We will not be waiting as long between visits next time. Â Our last visit was very good, but every course was perfect this time. Â Thanks for a great meal!
Taste is one of the area's few lunch spots with outdoor dining...it's in the line of oncoming Whitney Avenue traffic, okay, but there is a cement barrier! Â That said, the nearness of SUV hybrids whizzing by was probably the most exciting thing about our meal. Â The wine-by-the-glass list was a disappointment: Â not very creative (think over-oaked chardonnays, the ubiquitous pinot grigio, etc., etc., etc.) Â I had the tuna wontons appetizer and shared the crab cake salad and calamari salad. Â The tuna was nice in terms of presentation and flavor, but it had a problem in common with the salads: Â they were all terribly over-dressed. Â The crab cake salad was doused with a tartar sauce that was very one-note and sweet. Â The calamari was more to my liking, as it had a tangier dressing; but there was still too much of it, which dulled any crunch to the fried seafood. Â The place tries to market itself as New American, with an inventive, seasonal menu, but the salads made me think of the clunky stuff my grandmother would enjoy at tourist trap seafood houses on the Cape of my childhood. Â The one bright spot was the service; our server was attentive without being overbearing. That, however, is not enough to entice me to return.
Review Source:It's been a few years since I had last been at Taste, and the bad reviews on Yelp made me think it had gone downhill since it opened. Â On our most recent visit, however, the food and service was excellent. Â I checked in for my free glass of wine (always a welcome treat!), and then my sister and I shared the beet salad. Â Our entrees were the true highlight. Â My steak was juicy and perfectly cooked. Â We will be returning soon!
Review Source:My partner and I went back to TASTE tonite -- and to sum it up, we both kept wondering why we havent been back in over 2 years since our first great meal here. Â We had an even better experience this time and there will definitely not be a 2+ year gap before we're back again!
We just discovered Restaurant.Com and of all the places listed on that site, coming back to Taste was a no brainer. Â
Got here. place was about half full, seated right away and our server Anna was right with us to take oour drink orders. Â This girl is terrific -- most friendly and personable server we have encountered in a long time. Â She definitely added to our enjoyment of the meal by being so nice and taking such good care of us.
Partner had the Buffalo Shrimp app again and I had the Fried Goat Cheese stuffed cherry peppers. Â LOVED them both. Â I mean LOVED them.
He ordered the beet and apple salad and I had the Bibb and Bleu salad and both were terrific. Â I especially loved how the orange segments and the citus vinaigrette cut the richness of th generous slice of Bleu cheese nestled under the greens.
I ordered the Fettucini with Chicken, Sausage and Spinach. It was in a really nice tomato broth and was topped with some delicious rich cheese (can't remember the name of it). Partner ordered the cod and we were both astounded at the beautiful seared cod he was presented with - and perfectly cooked as well. It looked like it was served over a spinach puree of some kind (I didnt get a taste of it -- he wasn't sharing it, he enjoyed it so much!).
Partner loved his 2 perfect martinis and I had two "Glass-And-A-Half"'s (love that!) of a really nice Merlot. Â Â
Love this place - - the decor, the staff, the food, the drinks .... we're gonna be back soon -- and we're telling people about it this time too!
OH -- and the funniest part? Â On the way out .... I see my Ex's sister sitting having an obviously romantic dinner with some guy -- who ain't her husband !! Â LOLOL!!
Taste would be 2-1/2 stars if that rating was possible on Yelp. Â Our server really made the difference -- she was funny and helpful. Â My monk fish was also good, served over chickpeas and zucchini. Â But the prices were way too high on both food and wine and I felt like we were rushed out, though there were empty tables. Â With New Haven so close, try some of the amazing restaurants there first.
Review Source:Not sure why this place has gotten a bad rap recently....
My wife and I visited and were completely impressed with the cuisine. Â The manchego crostini appetizer was spot on, perfect crunch on the crostini and the flavor from the pequillo jam complimented the nutty flavor of the cheese perfectly.
My beet & apple salad was creative, and the sweetness of the roasted beets paired well with the gorgonzola and apple. Â My wife's caesar was a bit pedestrian, however it was a "play it safe" choice.
My wife's short ribs were tender & flavorful, but the star of the night was my black bass risotto, perfectly crisp skin and cooked to perfection, and the risotto wasn't overdone, it was al dente and very flavorful.
The only complaint I have was that the desserts seemed scatterbrained (too much going on within 1 plate). Â I got the banana bread pudding, and I know peanut butter & bananas are a normal pairing, however i thought the peanut butter sauce didn't match, caramel would have been better. Â My wife liked her flourless chocolate cake, but thought it was too sweet.
Wit'h a http://restaurant.com GC a bottle of white wine, appetizer, 2 salads, 2 entrees & 2 desserts came to $79 with tax & tip. Â With the quality of the food and service we both thought that was a steal...
We'll be back and with friends!
The restaurant is much nicer inside than it looks outside.
The app we got was obviously prepared in advance (tuna tartare)and was minced in a really unappealing way, and tasted way too salty, like they minced it so finely they had almost pureed it (which was weird enough) with too much soy. Â
My date's ossobucco was good, though a little dry (note - I talked to my date about it later and he said I had a dry piece, he didn't find the rest of it dry), the tastes worked well together. Â My hanger steak was excellent, except it was served over some bitter-tasting onion thing that made the steak taste bad; I had to wipe it off. Â It was alright on its own. The tempura asparagus was good. Â
My creme brulee was average, though my date's flourless cake was very good. Â
Overall we had a fine time, but especially for the price I don't think we'll return. Â The chef obviously has some interesting ideas, and does try to make a nice presentation - but that made it all the more odd that the tuna was almost pureed and looked awful, and that the chef doesn't seem to know how to balance a meal (ie putting either conflicting tastes together, making things in advance that shouldn't be, or not tasting the tartare and seeing that it just tasted like soy).
We were there for a mid-week luncheon. The room was classy and well-lit; the menu, while small, was inventive. Drinks proved to be both delicious and large (...so be careful). Our lunches were both excellent. the portion was small, but I'm OK with that as many portions other places are way too big. The preparation and presentation of our salmon and hanger steak entrees was spot on.
I felt sorry for the staff though: one young woman was acting as hostess, waitress, and bartender. I didn't see the kitchen to see if she was cooking too! She did a good job, though she must sleep well at night.
Taste's OK....
Decided to try Taste after friends recommended it. I had been looking forward to this meal all week but i left feeling underwhelmed. It was just OK, not awful, not spectacular, not worth $80. The portions are a bit small. I had the beef short ribs which were pretty good. Good Flavor and cooked as it should be. The ambiance was nice. The wine list is awful, we all love Pinot Noir so step it up! Cupcake, are you kidding me, that is the most low grade Pinot out there, you can buy it for $6.99 a bottle and they are asking $9.00 per glass, laughable at best. I understand markups but jesus learn your wines, there are so many better Pinot's for a couple extra bucks. The menu tries to be creative but misses the mark. Many better places in and around New Haven i would choose before this place. Sorry!
Taste has unique dishes made from really good ingredients. I have never been disappointed. The Flourless Chocolate Cake is dynamite. I had the Miso glazed salmon last night and it was perfect. Also, the chop chop salad was excellent. The people around us had the Buffalo shrimp and the Tallegio Bruschetta. Tallegio is a very strong cheese, and the smell was quite pronounced. I wished I could have tried it, too.
Service was attentive and friendly. Our meal came out quickly but they didn't rush us at any point and we lingered for a third cup of coffee.
Taste you are Waste of time and money.
had a http://restaurant.com gift cert and unfortunately it only covered the tip of the lack luster mediocre meal we experienced last night. Â The apps were...odd. Â potstickers had baby food pureed pork stuffed inside, the sauce too vinegary, the parmesan fries made no sense. Â the flavors were just not right how do you mess up fries???. Â i get the concept but it was off the mark. Â the wine was very expensive for what it was. Â the table next to us ordered the $30 Cupcake Pinot Noir and laughed after the waitress stepped away. Â I laughed as well knowing that i just bought it at Wine Emporium for $8 and that is pretty much what it tastes like.
My husband enjoyed his dinner of the Beef Short Ribs with mashed potatoes. Â It had the flavor, but how hard is it really to stew meat for 4 hours. Â I am in a family of cooks and caterers and the technique was just not there. Â My meal of the Free Range chicken...sucked. Â I love escarole and i love chicken and i love mashed potatoes and also olives...BUT not all together. Â The olives had no place in this dish, why olives?. Â The flavor was distracting to the rest of the dish. Â There was no seasoning on the chicken and the way it was butchered was laughable, a shard of broken bone was looking up at me the whole time. Â It was amateurish at best. Â
Ambience was nice as well as the waitresses. Â I am not sure what the chefs are going for here, but they have severely missed the mark.
We went to taste last night and were very favorably impressed with the decor, service and food. Â We started sharing a Caesar Salad and the Bruscetta with Tallegio cheese and fig compote. Â They were both very good but the bottom of the bruschetta should have been toasted a bit more (a small quibble - it was delicious). Â My husband had the hangar steak and I had the cod. Â Both were very good. Â We agreed when we left that we will be returinng to the restaurant - a good find!
Review Source:I've been wanting to go to Taste ever since we moved to New Haven over the summer, but being on a budget, it's been out of the question. It's not too expensive (entrees about $20), but if you're budget-conscious, it's more of a "nice dinner out" place. Luckily Groupon was offering a discount, so we were finally able to try it!
From start to finish - fantastic! It's such a cute and cozy place. My husband had a question about a beer, and our knowledgeable waitress not only described it well, but brought over a sample (and it turned out to be great). Our dinners were unique and delicious - the hanger steak was juicy and the sides (tempura-fried asparagus and kind of carmelized onions) were awesome, and the butternut squash fettucini with small chunks of pancetta was amazing! It had the perfect amount of butternut squash-iness...not too overwhelming but more than just a hint, and very creamy.
We got the apple spice cake and banana bread pudding for dessert. The apple spice cake had yummy chunks of apples, but like everything else, the portion was fairly small. The bread pudding was better, but it was the cake kind of bread pudding, so if you're into a more mushy consistency for your bread pudding, be forewarned :) .
Overall, a fabulous experience!
Whenever I am visting southern Connecticut I make sure to go to Taste. Â My favorite is the chop chop salad, but really everything that I have ordered there has been great. Â They have a great selection of wine, beer, and cocktails as well. Â
I'd recommend it to anyone in the area for something new. Â The food is great, and the prices are extremely reasonable. (aka a really good deal.)
I went to Taste over graduation weekend with my family and we couldn't have been more pleased with everything from the food to the service. Â It was nice to be away from the craziness of downtown New Haven and have a quiet, relaxing meal. Actually, I think this is something of a blessing and a curse for Taste - not being in downtown New Haven has its perks (easy parking, not so crowded), but sometimes forgotten since it's in North Haven.
As for the food, all around very impressed. I ordered the tilapia two ways, which included grilled and tempura fried fish. Both preparations were well done, the fish was moist and flaky and not overpowered by other seasonings. Â Others with me had the pork chop and lamb linguini - both were members of the clean plate club, so it must have been good!
The desserts were outstanding. My dad ordered the banana bread pudding and couldn't stop raving about it! Â I had the creme brulee with a blueberry sauce on top - excellent! The sugar crust was delicate and had the perfect crispness. Â Definitely leave room for dessert - you won't be dissapointed!
A few final points about Taste:
- Nice wine selection, and I really appreciate that they have a fair selection of half bottles.
- Serving portions were just right. I left feeling satisfied, but not overstuffed after finishing almost my whole meal and dessert. Â Some places have a hard time finding the balance between being stingy and overly generous, but the folks at Taste have it figured out.
- The waitstaff was attentive and personable. Â Our server chatted with us about the wine while she uncorked the bottle and was overall very pleasant.
All in all, a great meal that left us with full bellies and smiles on our faces.
Taste is the epitome of the upscale neighborhood restaurant. We visit 4-5 times per year and it hasn't gotten old - yet - but it is getting close. So, my review is split in two - one for those who have never been and another for returning patrons.
For newcomers - just go! the menu is interesting, the staff is attentive, and the food is great. They have a nice wine selection and most pair well with the food on the menu. they have a variety of specials that change frequently. You will enjoy. You will give it 4 or 5 stars.
For veterans - I would give Taste 4 or 5 stars, but I am looking for them to grow! refresh the menu beyond the specials. The menu has been the same for several years, and I think I've eaten everything on the dinner menu. Because I've run out of new things to try, taste gets only three stars for standing still. It doesn't matter, however, because we'll go back!
Been going to Taste since it opened and really liked it.
Good food, service and ambiance.
Sadly, and I don't know if its the economy or what, but Taste is all but deserted these days.
The food remains of 4 star quality but.. they haven't changed/expanded the menu for several years now. Â I find myself ordering the same 2 entrees. Â For this reason I no longer put it on my rotation list.
If I were more of a gourmet, I'd probably give Taste 5 stars. Â
The restaurant is pretty in a comfortable, unpretentious way (such a relief), and the staff are warm and knowledgeable. Â
I'm not a fan of New American or vertical presentation -- you know, "macaroni & cheese" that's made from some obscure french cheese, mingled with spinach, cranberries, and bits of lamb, and somehow molded into an Aztec pyramid shape that's garnished with something you know must be an herb but looks like hedge trimmings. Â
That said, Taste does it right. Â Even when it's not something to my taste, my first response when trying a dish of theirs is usually, "wow... i would never have put those flavors together, but they really work." Â Instead of hammering at your tastebuds with their "originality", Taste's dishes are interesting chords, with unexpected subtlety and range. Â Yes, I know I sound like a pretentious twit, but they really do an excellent and original job, and it really deserves commendation, and I'm really searching for a way to describe their achievement. Â
They're very good. Â If you like "serious" food, you should try them. Â Is that better?
I've been to Taste several times and am totally in love with it! The first time I went I just planned to have a cocktail at the bar (I was killing some time) and I discovered that they make the best chocolate martinis around. Since the martini was so good, I decided to get a side of their macaroni & cheese, which was also incredible. I've eaten there six or seven times since and every time the food and drinks were exceptional, and the service was exceptional. They do take reservations, which I'd recommend on the weekend or for a larger party. Try it - you'll like it!
Review Source:Went here for Mother's Day with my extended family. It could've been a disaster, seeing as how it's one of those holidays where every restaurant is over capacity and the kitchen falls apart because they haven't worked that hard since the previous Mother's Day. However, Taste left a really good impression.
The food was very good. I had braised short ribs, which were very much like a pot roast. Which means they were still delicious even when I heated up the leftovers the next day. I also had a creme brulee w/ some kind of blueberry mint compote. That was awesome, obviously.
The one thing I really liked about eating there on Mother's Day was that they didn't have a special menu. It sucks when you go to a restaurant on a special holiday, only to find out that you have to choose from a limited menu. I mean, look, I know you want to keep things easy for your kitchen, but I want to eat the real food that you serve. If you want to supplement the regular menu with some specials, that's great, but don't force me to choose between 4 things when your menu usually has 20. Taste gets mega-bonus points for not doing this.
The service was excellent, and the girl dealt with all of my family's annoying substitutions and omissions (including mine) and didn't blink an eye or make a mistake. Everyone was very friendly there, and we were welcomed warmly and thanked sincerely upon leaving.
The other thing that is awesome about Taste is that my girlfriend and I had an argument about whether it was in Hamden or North Haven, since it's basically right on both town lines. When I checked their website, at the bottom of the page it says North Haven. I win! Hey, it doesn't happen often, so let me revel in my glory... Then again, sometimes when you win, you lose...
