Went for drinks. Â Waitress was nice and as attentive as she could have been considering she seemed to be covering the entire place herself. Â It is a decent sized place and was crowded so she was def. working hard. Â Not sure why they can't get a second waitress on the floor.
Atmosphere is cool, a nice place to hang out and unwind after a hard day of work.
Update from my last review, still love their food and drinks, atmosphere is still chill, only reason I'm giving less stars is because of service. The waitresses need to be on their game more, need to give customers more attention more often. They seem too relaxed. Other than that, still one of a handful of local bars. Fox the service and more people will be drawn to come here.
Review Source:Friendly staff, good food, great beer selection. Â Came here after bartender at The Famous down the block was rude and glad we did. Â Russian female server is excellent as is the bartender gentleman named Emile (sp?). Â Glad this place is in the neighborhood as a non-snooty alternative to so-called upscale cocktail bars.
Review Source:They missed the mark with this place. Â It definitely has good ambience, however, very poor selection of beer for starters. Beer isI in right now and a lot of people are looking for GOOD beer! Â Not the mainstream, commercial stuff. The food wasn't too bad. Unique seasoning, especially on the fries. I was dissapointed with the beer selection to say the least. This review is a few years old. I just realized it was saved as a draft. Haven't been back to see if it has changed.
Review Source:The only reason I'm not giving this place a 1 is because I haven't been here just for drinks. Maybe it would be better. Maybe?
A group of 7 of us came here last week for lunch and proceeded to have the strangest experience and saddest food I've seen in years. First the drinks came out. Only 5 glasses of water for the 7 of us, we had to ask for more glasses. The sodas came out completely flat so everyone exchanged them for iced tea or just some of the water. The food came out over the course of the next hour. The only excuse is that the server was also doing the coooking for 7 people? It was the strangest thing. One guy didn't get his GRILLED CHEESE until we were all done eating. No one even came out and apologized, the server had no emotion or response to the group's annoyance. Like she was in a daze? Can't explain it. The burgers some of us ordered tasted like pepper. Just pepper. No other flavor or texture. I think someone liked their chicken panini. When the grilled cheese finally arrived, there was nothing grilled about it. The bread had grill marks but it seemed like someone had actually painted them on. The bread was still totally soft? And then the CHEESE wasn't even melted! Just thick slices of cold cheese on cold bread. Thankfully the server took if off our bill but still, she didn't seem fazed by anything at all.
Some of us had to stop somewhere on the way back to the office to get another lunch.
Seriously guys, avoid the food here. It is so not worth it. Maybe the non-soda drinks are good though, and maybe sometimes there's a nice little atmosphere happening.
But probably not.
I've been here several times with friends as well as for company happy hours.
The drinks specials are nice, but just beware that you need to order your 2fers1s before 6. If you order one drink before 6 and ask for the free one after 6 the bartenders will charge you.
Other than that...the food is mediocre. They try to spruce up the fried calamari, but its just not that good.
The burgers can be good and I can tell that they grind the meat themselves etc., but my burger just came out too....put simply..wet. It was dripping with grease and blood and just fell apart on my plate...it was still delicious.
They show all soccer games here so it's definitely a good place to go. Any place that shows soccer games and serves beer is a good place in my book.
I'll be back, but I want their food menu to improve.
Went here randomly after a movie at the Americana and luckily it was open after 10pm because everything around the area seemed either closed or not poppin. Found out those 3 liter beer towers was only $20!! Ordered a blue moon tower and fried calamari. The calamari was pretty to look at because it had cheeses and avocado ontop of it but the taste didn't go with the looks. I actually liked the music they played also. It was a mix of oldschool, alternative, and feelsgood music. I'd go back here after a movie any day.
Review Source:By all means avoid this place.
We went with a group from work and wound up regretting it.
The service was very slow, the waitress/bartender seemed to have an attitude from the moment we walked in, and not once came back to refill anyone's drinks. Oh - and that reminds me - sodas there? $3 for approximately eight oz.
If you have a group or if you're wanting a lunch on Brand, there are so many other choices.
Saturdaynight about 10pm still pretty empty, except for a few small parties. Â No real vibe, although they do have a dj but he's playing some new wave b.s., also if you've never been to Glendale you should know that single girls avoid it at all costs, atleast most of them. Â Also, Don't see any beers that interest me and no time to wait and see if the crowd picks up. So I'm out. Â Side note the food smells fantastic. Â Probably try it next time.
Review Source:Came here for lunch with my coworkers, the only reason is because this was one of the places on the list if you dine and spend more than $25, you get a certain number of air miles.
The service was bad and the food was bad, I'm not sure why people like this place.
We got an order of the chicken wings with there special spicy tavern sauce: Nothing special! They weren't even spicy!!! I can definitely make better at home. The carrots and celery were wet as if they just washed them, didn't dry them, and stuck them on a plate.
Caesar Salad (with grilled chicken): TERRIBLE, doesn't even taste like caesar salad, it wasn't crisp and tasted WARM. It was pretty disguisting, I had like 5 bites and refused to eat the rest. If we weren't on a 1 hour time crunch, I would have given it back and not been charged. But I sucked it up and just payed for it.
My friends got the garlic fries, I tried them and they were OKAY. Others seemed lie there food was just okay as well. I won't be coming back here, we had to keep rushing the waitress for our order and for the bill, and she wasn't the nicest or wasn't giving a friendly vibe, BTW the place was EMPTY!
It's quite often that a woman makes a place special. Â Ksenia, with her lovely Russian accent, is a beautiful as any Victoria Secret model. Â Her hair is curly with wild abandonment, and her smile and charm has this tavern quite full on a Saturday afternoon, with 99% nice chaps sitting at the bar. Â But don't get the wrong idea, she's a lady...and very proper. Â Without her, I'm afraid, this is a rather plain place. Â With rustic, exposed brick and dark wood, the 6 flat-screen TV's up high are the decor. Â Sitting at the bar is the main attraction, otherwise, it's a bit of a bore.
Watching my Trojans get beat by UCLA was tough, but having a beer http://www.yelp.com/biz_…, it's a cool hang, no BS, no attitude needed -- at least during the day. At night, it's supposed to be a whole 'nother thing.
Upscale bar food: wings, burgers, fried thingies, a couple of salads, and nachos! http://www.yelp.com/biz_…
They have several specials worth noting: Taco Tuesdays (3 of 'em + a draft for $10) http://www.yelp.com/biz_…; Various Lunch specials (M-F, 12p-3p), and a nice Happy Hour that runs 12p-7p everyday (2 for 1 drafts!).
I used to live very close to here, so I was there a lot. All the staff is very friendly. It a good place to watch sports if you're into that. Better be a Lakers fan if they're playing.
Best part about this place is the ridiculously generous and LOooong happy hour. Noon to 7pm all drinks are 2 for 1. Yep. Crazy. I wish there beer selection was a little more advanced though, no real micro brews except one. This place gets busy on weekend in the evening.
Stumbled across this place a few weeks ago while killing time since my car was getting detailed up the street and was pleasantly surprised! Â Great value, great, food and drinks! Â And best of all they had the NHL Network already on one of the TVs at the bar recapping the Kings Stanley Cup Victory so this place gets major points for that as well! Â
When I'm in the area I'll definitely be back!
It's your typical tavernbar that has a newer decor and feel. Â They have 24 or so beers on tap and from what I are pretty popular when it comes time to watch the game.
I visited on a Friday for lunch with some coworkers. Â We arrives when they opened at 11:30AM, and as expected we were the only customers for the most part. Â A couple of more groups came in, but it was pretty empty for the majority of our stay. Â The menu was simple and typical of a tavern (2 pages of food, 4 pages of drinks). Â I ordered the Philly Cheese Steak w/ Onion Rings. Â The sandwich is a little smaller than the typical Philly that I am use to, but it was tasty. Â The quality of the steak was better than something you would get at the Steak Escape in the mall and the toppings included Provolone, Bell Peppers, Onions, Mushrooms, and a little bit of Ketchup. Â The onion rings were the typical frozen ones and had a little more of an oil taste than I care for, but were still edible, and I still left satisfied.
It was lunch and I was with the boss, so I only had a glass of water and cannot speak for the beer selection. Â Service is a little on the slow side, we pretty much had to flag down the bar tender anytime we wanted something (place an order, refills, checks, ...)
In search of a happy hour spot near the office we can all retreat to, I remember seeing the "2 for 1 happy hour" on their awning, and myself and some coworkers headed over here on a Friday afternoon.
Although they have about 20 beers on tap, nothing especially impressive (asides for the fact that it's 2 for 1)! They seem to have a decent drink menu, although my friends didn't seemed to impressed with their drinks. Definitely seems like the bartenders need to work on their skills a bit.
The food was extremely disappointing. I ordered the "Old School burger," which was comparable to the "burgers" they give the kids at LAUSD public schools for lunch. An extremely plain burger, and an extra dry and flavorless patty. To say the least, I didn't even finish half of it. My friends ordered mozzarella sticks, shrimp, a salad, and fries, and seems like the only thing anyone finished eating were the fries.
On the plus side, our servers were attentive and pleasant.
As much as I love cheap drinking, there's nothing here for me.... Although I highly recommend this place to those of you that drink bud light and frequent TGIFriday's. It's right up your alley!
One of the worst places i have ever been too.
We went there for 15 mins to get some drinks during the intermission at Alex theater (the location is very convenient plus Alex theater doesnt have a bar)
There were only few people: strange for Saturday's night at that bar. But after we understood why.
We ordered couple of cocktails. First of all it took a bartender about 5 min to make cosmo and vodka redbull. And my cosmo was the worst I have ever tried
Indeed! you think it is impossible to make a terrible cocktail. I thought so too before.
their bartenders are probably good to open up beer bottles ONLY.
I didnt even drink it (my bf steel paid: his generous Armenian soul didnt let him to b""tch about $10 "impossible-to-drink-cocktail", If I were alone my Jewish soul wouldnt let me to waste $10 for that issue )
If you go there, order beer or wine!
Service here is terrible and bartenders can't make drinks. Since those are the two things that bars really need to do well, this place completely fails.
I ordered a Manhattan up (which should be shaken over ice and served in a cocktail/martini glass) and I got warm whiskey and vermouth served in a rocks glass. They basically gave me an "on the rocks" drink without ice. At least they remembered the cherry, but that's all I'll give them. After that I ordered beers, which arrived in different sized glasses every time.
Service was slow and we frequently had to go to the bar ourselves to get served (it was not very busy - but somehow still very loud - and we were at a table).
I won't be coming back.
No clue why this place doesn't have a higher rating, the happy hour is amazing! 12-7 every day is 2-for-1 drinks, 2 beers for $5 and 2 well drinks for $3. Shots are included too! The food is pretty good for a bar, the nachos are probably my favorite. They also have really good french fries and hot wings. Haven't really tried anything else but at a bar, I think that's all you need.
Overall the service is pretty good, sometimes it can be hard to get the bartenders' attention when it's crowded but they do walk around making sure everything is okay. Only downside is my favorite bartender left, the others are great but Hope was definitely one of the best. First time my friend and I came here we had way too many drinks but she made sure we were okay and gave us glasses of water without us having to ask. If Hope was still there it would definitely be a five star place, but the other bartenders are still great and the happy hour is amazing. They also have drink specials after happy hour ($5 jack and coke on Fridays!) so it makes it one of the best bars around town!
The happy hour is really good here, was able to get drinks for a large group for a small amount of money. My only complaint is the service...had to stay on top of them.
Also, two things occurred that I was not a fan of:
#1 - I called and spoke to someone the day before, told them I had a group of 20 coming in the next day and gave the guy my name. When I came in, the waitress had no idea about the large party and it was just her servicing the whole bar until she grabbed the owner to come out.
#2 - When I received the check for the afternoon, the waitress gave me the credit card print out of the receipt (not the full break down). I figured they had added the gratuity for our large group, so I had to request to have the original receipt printed. Sure enough, gratuity was there. Sneaky sneaky if you ask me...did not appreciate that.
Overall, everyone in my group liked the place. But you have to stay on top of their service, otherwise you will leave with a bad experience.
I recently made a reservation for a large group of 20 people at Happy Hour. I was very pleased with the food and service, and my group had a great time.
We took up a long section of tables against the wall. The place is big, with plenty of space for large parties.
Our waitress was very attentive with our orders and we were served promptly.
The two for one drink specials at Happy Hour are really great. Â The burgers were good, and I loved the Calamari topped with olives and feta cheese.
Everyone said they had a fun time. And I would definately come back with a large group again. The food, happy hour drinks, and service were all great.
I'm going to be honest, but won't list the names of the three people whose service left a great deal to be desired.
This place was bad, you guys. Â If I could, I'd give it a half star. Â Possibly a quarter star. Â I am going out of my way to tell my friends not to patronize this pathetic excuse for a bar.
Here's the deal:
Last week, I met up with a friend who wanted to check it out (just like I did).
It took approximately ten minutes to get noticed and seated (they weren't full). Â I waited on purpose without asking anyone (standing there should have been enough) just to see.
It took approximately twenty five minutes to get asked if I wanted a damned glass of water. Â (Sorry, but I'm pissed.)
When we ordered, my friend first received an entirely different salad, then got the salad she had ordered, but without the protein (an egg) which she needed because she's a vegetarian.
When we brought it to the staff's attention, we did not get an apology.
In fact, what we got was this:
Bummer. Â You know what? Â It's written wrong on the menu. Â This has totally happened before. Â I actually brought you the right salad. Â It just totally shouldn't say that on the menu (that it has a chopped egg). Totally not right.
Yeah, Tavern on Brand, totally.
So let me get this straight. Â You have a misprinted menu that you have let your customers order from for how long? Â (This is assuming she wasn't lying, and I ain't convinced!) Â And you've trained your waitresses this poorly on customer service for how long? Â How about an apology and an eager offer to comp it since the service was so awful?
And to top it off, the bathroom had toilet paper everywhere (the trash was overflowing) and there was barely enough soap for me to get in my second hand wash.
Totally ridiculous. Â
Totally.
So we're just rating would have been four or five stars because of my past experiences, but after a while I went back walked in and the best bartender ever doesn't work there anymore.
Rachel took care of me every time I went in there. Now you just have a bunch of clueless rookies pouring half assed watered-down drinks. Please go back to bartending school and make sure you were awake when they taught mixing 101.
When I asked about Rachel, no one seemed to know where she is. I find that hard to believe because she was really close friends with the owners. Â Whatever they did, they pissed her off and now she's not there anymore. I'd rather buy my own bottles and mix at home because the people there now just don't cut the mustard and not worth the drive.
My review might not carry much weight considering the memories were alittle foggy, to say the least. But I had a grand o' time here!
We came in on a Saturday night and there were seating available at both the bar and tables. We got the $5 Sweet Tea Vodka special for several rounds, then moved onto beer and shots. Prices are reasonable and there was a DJ spinning? I can't recall - but there was dance music. That I'm sure of.
The servers are great! A+ for the service. All the ladies were beautiful and friendly and happy. Our drinks and food came prompty. The french fries and nachos were so good here, so good. Especially the nachos, that was a big hit at our table.
I forgot my credit card at the bar and the server brought it to me. Those were the memories I do remember. Never a line for the restrooms either.
(Drank 3/17/12 SA): It was St. Patty's Day, just finished lunch with cousins, and wanted to celebrate the holiday properly with some Irish libation without going very far.
After grubbing some tasty Filipino food at Max's Restaurant of Manila in Glendale with some cousins for lunch, two of us needed to get into the Irish spirit and throw back some drinks, and Tavern On Brand seemed to call our names!
Located next to the historic Alex Theater in downtown Glendale, we walked into a rather sparse collection of patrons at around 3pm and four waiters and waitresses working. We sat ourselves at a standalone long-bar table counter and were immediately approached by one of the cute waitresses who wore a pink trucker cap (we were eventually helped by all three good-looking waitresses throughout our time there), who took our order...an Irish car bomb (4 @ $10.00 ea.) and some water. FYI...an Irish car bomb is Guinness with a mixed shot of Bailey's Irish cream and Jameson Irish whiskey dropped in. All I have to say is, "yummy!"
It appeared that they have a decent selection of alcohol of all types, and for those who did order food (I saw burgers, salads, and various appetizers), it all smelled good, but I was still full from lunch. This was my first time here, so I definitely have to come back for the food. I would believe this place would also be more lively in the evening time after I got off work.
There are several flat-screen TVs throughout for a more sports bar feel. The layout is narrowly-rectangular, so I can imagine it would get crowded pretty quickly. The décor is nothing special and plainly simple with it's brick walls and not much promotional clutter you'd see in most sports bars. They do have daily drink specials and apparently have happy hour everyday until 7pm! But please make sure to ask exactly what the happy hour specials are. Â
As I already mentioned, the service was great and helps when the waitresses are attractive (for me, anyway). I hope the service is as diligent during a busier time.
Parking is ample. There is a paid parking lot in the back (there are many of these throughout downtown Glendale - $0.75/hour), parking structures a block down, and street parking on Brand Blvd or up-and-down all the many side streets.
Overall, I like the no-frills feel of Tavern On Brand and the brick walls, which reminded of several bars I've visited along the east coast. We didn't order any food, so have no idea about prices or taste. An updated review is a must. I found some value based on the type of daily and happy hour specials written on the chalkboard, but I felt our drinks could have been a couple bucks cheaper, as noted by the price I quoted above (total bill was around $43 before tip). The atmosphere seemed casual enough, but I envision many people in business attire in the evening during the work week, so take that into consideration. And they take my credit card of choice...AMEX!
I just wasn't feeling this place.. We went while the laker game was on and I knew it would empty out once the game was over but even then I still didn't like it. It just was an uncomfortable space.. too small a bar for that many people. Once we did get a table for two and not just me sitting at the bar while he stood, I still wasn't feeling the place. I think the drinks are way overpriced.... I wasn't aware that these drinks had a tax on them, close to $20.00 for two drinks is not worth the location of this place. It's Glendale, not Hollywood or even North Hollywood. The only good thing is the waitress came by allot to check on you which is nice but I felt like we where pressured to consume the drinks we had and order another one or leave. We left after the second round.
( On the girly note, I hate bars that do not have purse hooks.. )
I don't usually give bad reviews, especially 1 star reviews but I really had to this time.
This is a nice little bar/tavern happy hour spot with interesting decor, awesome menu and a nice selection of beers so a perfect place for a Friday lunch..... all that is true only on paper.
I came there on Friday because that's when I take a longer lunch at work, and usually go to interesting nice places to eat. I looked at reviews, pictures, menu all was perfect, but I was wrong.
There were 5 other people in the bar... great I thought I wont have a problem getting attention from waiters and food will come quickly... once again I was wrong (are you starting to get the picture).
Long store short I was there for 1 hour before my food came. I ordered a mushroom swiss burder with fries. No drinks. Does it really take 1 hour? I mean maybe if there were busy that makes sense I wouldn't complain but there was no one there.
I sat there the whole time and didn't leave because I wanted to see how long it will actually take for them to bring out my order (for purposes of leaving this review of course). And clearly I wanted to taste the amazing looking burger I ordered.
Well the burger came, but I think they forgot to add "taste" to it. I mean, I haven't eaten a blander, tasteless burger in a long time. I can't cook but I could make a better burger than this place. I will go even further and state that a fast food burger from Carls Junior or Jack In The Box is waaaayyyy better than what you get at this place. Â I should mention that fast food burgers make me want to yak sooooo all sarcasm aside, don't order the burger.
Over all I'd stay away from this place. Sad but true.
Pros: This is my first time at this place and I must say I am impressed. The beer was really good and the service even better. Try their Pryamid on tap, you will thank me.
Cons: Not many cons, but if I had to say one or two it would be that its a bit loud in there and the bathroom is only for one person at a time.
I will be back here for the taco night ... can't wait!!
The service was awful. The bartender didn't know what alcohol they had. Both of the bartenders were too busy talking to boys to do their actual job.
The drinks were overpriced. The wine was old and headache inducing. Â
The music was so wretched that I had to ask them to change it. Who wants to listen to untz untz untz in a tavern?! Oi!
There were never more than 10 people here on a Saturday night and the crowd were the kind of douches that only go to a bar to see bartenders with big boobs.
I will never go to this bar again and here I am to advise you to never go.
I liked the light bulbs - that's the only thing worthy of Tavern On Brand receiving the one lonely star.
What a waste of a good space.
Hmmm.
The decor at Tavern on Brand reminded me a lot of one of those HGTV makeover shows. Ya know the scenario, the guy says, "Oh man, I'd love a man cave and can you make it look like one of those cool, old taverns?"
Then the show's very effeminate designer who's probably wearing a silk scarf around his neck and a zippy beret placed perfectly on his head says, "Oh honey, we'll turn this into a man cave tavern alright!! Rrreeeoooorrr"
Then, cut to the reveal and you think, "Um, have either one of them ever been to an actual tavern before? Because this ain't it!"
So yeah, that's Tavern On Brand. It's trying really hard to capture some sort of a vibe, but it looks like a cheap knock off with no soul. As for the drinks, they were poured well and I enjoyed the fact that you can sit near the big open windows and people watch, errr, rather, people make fun of as Glendalians stroll by at their leisure.
The bartenders and servers were sweet and I liked the fact that they offered to do separate checks even though we were all at one table. Very cool. As for patrons, there seemed to be more guys here than gals, at least that was my impression as a sea of bored looking dudes held up the bar.
Would I go back, mmmm, most likely not, but if you aren't looking for an atmosphere that offers up charm or character, than this place is fine. Otherwise, I'd rather hit Damon's up the street for a fun and lively, and yes, quirky, bar scene.
