As other people have mentioned, my goodness, are there Jesus motifs everywhere! The red/pink lighting can kind of hurt your eyes after a while, but damn it, this place had an amazing vibe. I asked the lovely female bartender if she had any suggestions as I was a big fan of infused vodkas and she said that the cucumber vodka was her favorite and recommended a drink with ginger ale in it. It was delicious! And only $5! Coming from Austin, I expected an infused drink like that to be at least $10 or so. I was delighted at how cheap AND STRONG it was. We found this really comfy couch to lounge on too. Great crowd, hip but not terribly ironic. I wish I could bring this place back to Austin with me!
Review Source:Very cool bar--good vibe, cool lighting, fun theme and great drinks.
As others have said, the Vodka-infused drinks are good. The beer selection is also decent and the prices are fair.
The bartenders were friendly too. However, trying to flag either of them down was like pulling teeth and I stood at the bar for about 20 minutes of the hour-long visit, enough to make me not want to go back.
Excellent infused Vodka drinks. Â Cucumber mule and Pickle were my favorite. Â
Bartender ran out of one ingredient (luckily not the alcohol!) and offered the drink for half off, which he didn't have to do. And I honestly couldn't tell it was missing anything. Both bartenders were friendly and helpful.
It is a hipster bar, but I felt very comfortable and relaxed. Â Seems like a great place to meet quirky people.
A hip bar for people who aren't too hip. Typically, I am waring of any spirits that are infused, flavored, or any process of adding fruit, candy, or alien substance. But these are pretty good. Much like the decor, it's a little overweening but subtle enough to be enjoyed.
High chairs at two person tables. A nice patio, too.
There about eight beers on tap, most are local, and they have a wide enough variety to appeal to various tastes.
I went on a first date, and it was a good choice. Not too hip; a variety of drinks; and not too noisy. But be warned: there is no food, but you can order food at the coffee shop next door (St. Mark's).
Great vibes here for a local watering hole. Â I spent my first and third evenings here on my last trip to Denver and got sauced on wine and a shot of Fireball one night and infused vodka on another. Â Did I mention that I don't really drink?
Loved the string of festive pink lights overhead, the Dia de los Muertes decor, and the one-too-many crosses on the wall above the bar.
They have custom-infused vodkas and the one that I had the second night that I was there was a White Russian-esque flavor. Â It was terrible, but the flavor wasn't strong enough for me to have recognized that it was supposed to actually be a White Russian.
There's a variety of seating, bar, high bar, booth, and patio.
I met the owner and he was super nice and welcoming. Â My friend that I went with lives like half a block away. Â I'm sure that we'd be back here on my next trip to town...if she still lives there.
Fun times.
I don't know what it is that makes this place rock. Was there last night on a Thursday and by 8pm it was packed and everyone was having a good time. They do a good job of representing Colorado brews. infused vodka for those of you that are into such things. I think i had a sangria at some point in the night..
only minus is the tight space and lack of seating. if you're not their early expect to stand, but then again that's the best way to make new friends.
The Thin Man is my favorite bar in Denver. It is a tiny little spot with loads of charm and atmosphere. Their beer list is always great, and they have a list of ever-changing delicious mixed drinks. It gets packed on weekends, but it is a lovely place for a drink on a weekday evening.
Review Source:I love this place. Yes, it's small. Yes, it gets packed at night. Yes, finding a seat can be difficult on the weekend. Â But it's quirky, the bar tenders are very nice, and it's actually a nice place to work during the day. Â I highly recommend trying it if you need to read or work for a while and are tired of sitting in a coffee shop.
Review Source:Originally, I wanted to go here because the movie "The Thin Man" was my favorite and I thought I had read from a Yelp weekly email they had the best eggnog in town. Â Not being an eggnog fan but decided if I was going to have some, I might as well have the best in town. Â I get there and turns out, no eggnog.
What no eggnog?!?! Seriously?!?! What the....Do not despair my friends. Â I know previous Yelp reviews stated that the staff wasn't all that, well I didn't experience that. I had told the bartender about the Yelp email and after looking at me like I'd just sprung another head, suggested they maybe he could get some eggnog from St. Mark's Coffee Shop next door and doctor it up for me. And, it was amazing!! Â Phew! Â I wasn't alone on this journey for Denver's greatest eggnog so I was glad that I could at least offer the eggnog (with a sheepish grin and shoulder shrug).
The place is small but in a cozy kind of way. There is a couch in the back if you want to snuggle with a date or just kick back and chew the fat with some friends. Although they do not have their own menu, food can be ordered from St. Mark's Coffee Shop to nosh on while hanging out. The beers are tasty and reasonably priced. I'm partial to the Amber myself.
Don't be put off by the decor. Although a hard back copy of Dashell Hammett's "The thin Man" can be found behind the bar, the similarities end there. According to the bar staff, when the owner first opened the place, he didn't know how to decorate the place. Â So, he asked advice from his patrons and they suggested a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jesus. And the decorating extravaganza via the patrons began. Â Many of the items that cover the walls and bar where brought in by customers. I think it says a lot about the owner and the kind of bar "The Thin Man" is that customers think enough of the place to bring in the decor.
Cheers!
This is one awesome neighborhood spot! Â The bar is small but the crowd is so diverse. Finding a seat could be a problem but the atmosphere is worth standing around for. Â They change the decor often by letting local artists showcase their work.
Come here if you like a little bit of everything and want to escape the norm.
Amazing bar! I actually hesitated to write a review because I don't know if I want anyone else to find it.
This is your place if you're a more grown up urbanite who doesn't own enough shiny jeans for Larimer Square and wants to avoid the squeals of recently graduated sorority girls. Amazing Alice-in-Wonderland themed decor with an eclectic wall full Christian iconography that is both provoking and respectful. An amazing array of drinks, bartenders who know how to mix them, and a wide selection of single-malt scotches. Upstairs the music ranges from reggae to blue grass to more recent indie bands. Think Mumford and Sons, Devotchka, etc. The atmosphere is just loud enough that you can have a good spirited conversation without the next table over listening in.
Downstairs is a small music venue that seems to attract good, but maybe not so well known local bands.
Only downside is that week nights the service can be a little slow since they seem to have only one or two bartenders and the place is pretty popular. But still, it's adequate and not any slower than many other bars.
This is a great little bar nestled amongst some restaurants on 17th. Â Ventured out with a friend to meet up and she wanted to give this a place a try since a little birdie told her about the eggnog served here.
Upon arrival this place wows the eyes with the eclectic collection of art and religious memorabilia on the walls. Â What we found intriguing was the story. Â When the guy bought the bar he was looking for a good omen and a way to ensure good luck and a customer brought in a picture (can't remember which one) - this lead to all the customers starting to bring there artwork and other items for the wall. Â So really the locals decorated the walls and it definitely has that personal touch feel. Â
I have to give a shout out to our amazing bartender - he was delicious to feast my eyes upon and never let us down all night.
We opted for some beers on tap and to split an eggnog. Â Turns out the bar doesn't have the eggnog - the bartender said he could get some next door and make us one. Â Now that's service! Â Eggnog mixed with brandy to top off the night - outrageously delicious. Â We both fell in love with eggnog right then and there. Â
Great bar in a nice neighborhood with an eclectic crowd and a good liquor selection - can't ask for much more.
Some interesting choices in dive-like decor (without the smelly homeless person smell). Jesus paraphernalia everywhere. I personally can't stand the pink Christmas lights strung all over the bar, but others seem to love it.
The best part are the prices. Each vodka soda will cost you a mere $5 a pop, so you can sit there all day and try plenty of their concoctions until they take your cup away.
The bad? Really, really slow service with an attitude. I've been to a few New York bars who carry this same vibe (which takes some getting used to). However, with the underwhelming crowd and bartenders who feel the ruder they are to you, the bigger tips they deserve, I'd suggest bringing your business elsewhere.
Dirty Tomato Jalapeno Martini. If you want to die happy, have one of these.
The bartenders here all seem to know their shit pretty well. They aren't always the friendliest, chattiest folks, but that's ok with me if they make me a killer drink. The aforementioned beverage goes for $8, which is very reasonable for a well-crafted martini. The tomato jalapeno vodka is one of many infused vodkas that they have here and I don't know too much about the others, because once I have something and love it, it is unlikely that I will stray.
Other things that I love about this bar are 1) LOTS of local beers on tap and 2) its never crazy crowded. We were there Saturday night around 11:30, which in some places means you are going to have really obnoxious drunk people crammed together in a room, all sweaty and horny and loud and homicidal mania-inducing. But at the Thin Man, the crowd generally seems a bit calmer. Folks are lively but I can always find a place to set my drink and I can hear the people that I came with without having them shout directly into my ear.
Lastly, there are two patios. One is out front on 17th and the other out back behind the bar. You can order food from St. Mark's next door if it is still open. I'm glad I live close to this place!
One of my favorite bars in Denver. Super casual, but has the vibe of a trendy poet's bar, just off the main drag. Great lighting and decor, and love the front garage door window to open to the patio during the summer. Really cool ambiance.
$5 (as of this post) infused vodkas, and the Sweet Tea or Vanilla vodkas are a sure-fire win. And they rotate infused flavors very regularly. They certainly go down easy, but pack a punch after 2-3. Pairs well with Vine Street nearby, since they only do beer, and Thin Man has a lot of prohibition-style drinks.
Had I written this review 5 years back when I first went there on a bustling evening, I would have given The Thin Man a meager 2 stars. Â However, as I have matured, I've come to appreciate the appeal of this trendy establishment. Â The Thin Man fits Uptown perfectly and is is a great counterpart to Vine St. Â When Vine is packed with a dinner crowd or if we have had our share of beer, the Thin Man is a great compliment and transition bar. Â
I only really started to appreciate this bar when I went during idle times. Â During these times, one can really appreciate the decor which consists of crucifixes lining the east wall and an ever changing display of local artwork on the west wall. Â The lighting is calming and the music most often fits the mood. Â Our traditional bartender always is quick to greet us with a smile and manages to concoct some awesome and stiff drinks. Â Their infused vodkas and soda are pretty awesome as well! Â The dispostion of this bar makes me more inclined to order cocktails, however, they do have an awesome draft selection.
If you've been here during an evening rush and were turned off, I'd highly recommend returning during the off hours and seeing it in its most purest of states. Â It is so choice.
The inside of The Thin Man is so fun! Â Pink strands of lights, lots of crosses and pictures of Mother Mary. Â Very unique and hip. Â
The best part is the homemade flavor-infused vodkas - you can get strawberry, vanilla, jalepeno, cucumber, basil - to name a few. Â I opted for cucumber vodka and ginger ale. Â It was SO refreshing and perfect to sip with a friend in the outdoor seating. Â I'll definitely be returning.
If you have never seen the classic 1930's Thin Man film series you need to do so. Â The films are high quality and a real blast from the past, much like the Thin Man bar itself. Â The decor is post-prohibition era with pendulum lights hanging over a very tastefully decorated bar. Â The bar staff, though always busy because of the crowds, are super professional and nice. Â One of the female bartenders offered to take pictures of me and my friend after she noticed my camera.
The signature thing is their infused vodkas. You can see them lining the counter of the bar. Â Infused vodkas aren't quite as easy as they look. Â I have enjoyed infused vodkas from lots of great bars like Red Square in Mandalay Bay in Vegas and Russian Samovar in NYC and I can say that The Thin Man does a comparable job with such. Â The cucumber is perfect on a warm day; you should take yours outside as they have outdoor seating. Â
Really pleased with The Thin Man and will be back!
A great little mix of people here. I do enjoy the fact as other yelpers say it is kind of what it is. Hip, trendy, chill, friendly; I guess that's why I've been here so much in the past few months.
+ 1 star for lots of seating
+ 1 star for decent prices
+ 1 star for good people watching
+ 1 star for good parking
I can't complain.
Fun fact about yours truly: I am extremely claustrophobic. Not in the "locked in a pitch black room" sort of way, but in the "Oh, dear god in heaven, there are people pressing up against me EVERYWHERE" sort of way.
When I get in a crowded bar, I can act a little weird and snippy, especially at the bar.
I find that this claustrophobia is exacerbated when the venue is basically a long hallway with far too many tables packed into the length of the place.
I think you can see what I'm getting at here, because I'm pretty much defining the layout of the The Thin Man.
Panic-inducing layout aside, this place isn't bad. The blasphemous little imp in me loves the wall of Jesuses and the drink selection isn't that bad. The patio is quite lovely, and I would opt for that in the Spring and Summer months.
I'm not sure if they have cocktail servers for the tables or not, since there aren't too many tables and no one visited my table in the 45 minutes I was there having a pint with some friends before a show.
Friendly bartenders, infused vodka, interesting decorations and plopping one's butt right in front of a fire with a stiff drink in your hand.
Where do I sign up?
I don't really have much to add to everyone else's reviews. Â This is a small, thin bar with great barkeeps, decently priced drinks and "interesting" decorations. Â If I lived a bit closer, I'd definitely make this place a habit.
Met up with some friends on Saturday night for an early round of drinks...talk about being underwhelmed!
There is nothing worse than a bar that isn't busy, has two barkeeps and you still have to wait 10 minutes to get a drink...a veritable eternity in a slow bar!
They both seemed like they couldn't have cared less and I was not at all happy about that! I came to drink, it's a bar for hell sakes! Don't ignore me, at least acknowledge me...avoiding eye contact like I will go away while you shoot the bull with your buds is really unacceptable...we all need attention, lol
I suspect I won't be back although I love St Marks...nope, not going to do it!
I wanted to update my review of the Thin Man based on the fact that I've recently become a fan of having happy hour with them.
First off, it's pretty chill there for happy hour. Â St. Marks will still be bustling next door, but you'll easily find seating at the Thin Man, which isn't always the case in the evenings. Â Secondly, it's pretty darn affordable. Call drinks are just $3. Â Lastly, it's the Thin Man, so it's a cool place to be,
The bartenders are always kind. The people watching is quite keen as well. And I've never heard anything less than a superb soundtrack. Â Really, what more could you want from a great happy hour?
My old review holds true for evenings, but for happy hour, it's a slightly different bar: less crowded and less expensive, which makes the Thin Man quite phat.
I'm madly in love with this area of town and The Thin Man is one of the reasons for this crush.
Small, cozy, and always packed. Â Seriously, there's never been a night, weekday or weekend day, that I've found myself here where it is not jammed packed. Â There may be moments of calm, but then another crowd moves in to occupy the vacant space. Â So if you come here with a group, be prepared to not have a spot. Â Or hover and swoop in when an open table appears.
There are reasons why The Thin Man is *the* place to be on 17th and Vine: Â swanky, dark, sultry, intimate interior; Infused vodkas and great, rotating local brews on tap; fun, interesting people are always willing to chat if you find yourself stag.
The bartenders may be a bit flaky at times, but once you get their attention for the first time, they generally don't ignore you upon your second visit to the bar. Â Have patience and you're in!
Oh Thin Man, I wish it were that we weren't such strangers! Â Please come to my side of town!
This place is cool, without even trying.
i wish i could be like that!
With their open windows, cutesey decor, fun bartenders and DELISH sangria, it's a no brainer as to why everyone loves this little neighborhood bar,...even more so in the summer!
it's perfect little patio and summer inspired drinks make this place a yelper favorite :)
Oh, this is one of my favorite places in Denver. You name it, they do it right, in my humble opinion.
Smart thinking and looking crowd.
Friendly bartenders.
Cool cat owner.
Infused vodkas.
Progressive aura.
Small cozy space.
Patio.
Sister coffee shop next door.
LAMPS in the trees.
This is where friends meet up. This is where my friends are.
Was supposed to meet up with a group of friends at St Marks last night but we changed our minds and hung out at The Thin Man next door instead.
This place is really cool, with it's strings of blue lights and offbeat decor. Â The bartenders were really friendly and while there did not seem to be table service, I got my drinks SUPER fast when I hopped up to the bar, no standing around for ages waiting to be noticed.
They have a fantastic selection of infused vodkas that I want to try but I stuck with Ace Pear cider since they have it on tap and I haven't had it in ages.
There were only two drawbacks, one of their massive painted posters actually fell off of the wall onto another patron and no one offered to help her, but she didn't seem too upset, so no stars off for that. Â The music volume was up a bit high making it tough to have conversations, but again, I was there with a large group. Â Had it just been me and one or two friends, conversation would have been zero problem at all.
The only reason there is a star off at all, really was for parking. Â At 6 PM on a Wednesday I ended up having to park a block and a half away and trying to cross 17th on foot which was pretty perilous. I would advise trying to find a spot that doesn't require the dash across 17th!
I will be back for sure.
I was here drunk, barefoot, Â wearing only boxer shorts and a t-shirt, dancing to Ray Charles and they didn't 1.kick me out, 2. Tell me I am a terrible dancer and call the police, or 3. bat an eye. Â FIVE STARS!! Â
(the bad part of the evening was ditching my friend and running all the way home.... drunk, barefoot and only wearing a t-shirt and boxers)
Sad that I have to stop at 5, because this place goes to 11. Â Love the patio, and the fact that it melds in with St. Mark's. Â Love the decor. Â LOVE the infused vodkas (pineapple on ice, apricot with a little soda, mango . . . or maybe it was guava . . . does it matter?). Â Love that it was still buzzing at 11pm on a Sunday night. Â Love the owner, love the bartenders. Â
Yes, I'm in love - maybe that explains this headache . . .
Your first thought when you walk into the Thin Man may be how strange the lighting is. It's pretty dark with these red tinged Christmas lights which puts you in the mood for either napping or um...just "the mood."
You'll probably quickly forget how strange the lighting is though once you move onto how strange all the Jesus paraphernalia is. That sense of strangeness will only last until you see the flamingos wearing miniature toupees all over the place.
What I'm trying to say is the Thin man has a lot of character. It also seems to have a lot of regulars. They also have a nice selection of housed infused vodkas and draft beers along with the normal stuff available at bars.
The bar is narrow and tends to fill up pretty quickly, but the atmosphere is always nice regardless of how crowded the bar becomes.
The Thin Man hasn't changed my life yet, but I think it has potential. It's also a nice place to run into friends.
I love interior exteriors ... inside places that look like they should be outside. Thin man feels like a nicely decorated alley in Italy, with red paper lantern lights strung against the sky/ceiling. The open garage-door front adds to the effect.
Jesus Mary Joseph and the Pope! There's a lot of religious stuff on the wall, an orgy, really. I think they lost their religious significance after Jesus painting number ten went up, just before the day-glo green crucifix made it onto the wall, nicely setting off the limes hanging nearby.
Lots of infused vodkas to choose from, grappas galore, but all I had was the beer on tap. Tyrone was nice enough to give me a taste of something he thought would be similar to Fat Tire (since they don't have that).
I would give it five stars, but it hasn't changed my life yet. Stay tuned!
