Great neighborhood bar good beer & super burgers.  No pretense, mechanic having shot of gin & beer next to broker with "Extra dry beefeater" BSing with each other.

Lots of parking in the back - but it was PACKED on a Friday night.    Burgers, onion rings and beer.   Simple fare but very good.   Friday nights, they have open mic for bands/performers in the 2nd floor.   Good place to just sit back, hangout with friends and unwind...

cheap beer and french fries. I love the vibe. I'm getting pretty tired of new spots trying to be trendy or 'too cool'. A Montclair classic. Long live Tierneys.

When I am in montclair you can find me getting a couple of cold ones at T's. It is a great place to grab a couple of $2 pbrs and chill with some friends. I must say the bar food is actually good I am a bacon cheeseburger and cheese fries guy when I am in there. Makes me hungry thinking about it.

Great local bar. Real low key and family owned. Drinks are cheap, burgers are great, and ambiance is very down to earth and has an Irish twist.

"A bar with a grill, not a bar and grill" as they state on their napkin dispenser. Live music on certain nights which has been good in the past.

Good spot for a few drinks with friends.

Strangers are better than friends. I run into no one here. No former classmates or old flames. Nor do I find disgruntled townies on a mission from God. Speaking of God, I don't know the guy. Never met him. Heard things. Good things. Bad things. I'm familiar with his body of work. But then again, who isn't?

I know, I know, people will say "But signore, how do you know God is a 'he'"? Frankly pal, I don't know for sure. No big theological argument here. I just have an inkling. Call it a hunch. God gave us alcohol, did he not? He did. Then he gave us bars. Bars like Tierney's.

Cash only.  Can't order food upstairs.  Bartenders are grouchy middle aged white guys who probably just voted for Romney.  Great sound system & sound guy.  Food is limited to sandwiches & burgers.  If you are not there to see a band, do NOT bother.

Tierney's is unique in that it has the ambiance of a comfortable neighborhood bar but actually caters to all age groups and also brings an array of local talent.

I'll give almost any dive bar 3 stars right off the bat. Add $2 PBR drafts, and you get that 4th one.

Tierney's is my go-to bar in town. Upstairs, they have bands on the weekends, and the main bar is always awesome.  Bartenders are cool, and they do a good job keeping up on busy nights. In all honesty, I've never had a bad time there.

I've heard that the burgers are awesome, but my Tierney's diet usually consists of the aforementioned PBR, sprinkled with a shot or two of scotch.

It's a cross between a dive and an Irish bar.
It was pretty packed with locals on Friday night.  There was a band upstairs but I think that was a private event.  The bar is  pretty big and there are plenty of tables and other seating around the bar area.  The bathroom was way too small.  My nose was practically touching the stall door as I was taking care of my business.  And the sink was clogged which made it very difficult to wash hands.  I didn't drink but my friends did and they said the prices were fair and the drinks were strong.  The people there were friendly.  It's an okay spot just not really my scene.

Awesome laid back decor and vibe plus weak drinks, bad music and dull crowd equals Tierney's being a big fat dud.

Two stars for the cheap menu of food I'll probably never eat.

Tierney's is a great place. The bar is definitely not a place to go for if your looking for a   high end establishment. The place is full of great people and also a great burger.  I always go there just to hang and have a few pints, for those that have been to Ireland you get the same feeling and sense of an Irish pub because the Pint of Guinness is fresh and the people are friendly.  If you are looking for a place to sit and drink without trying to impress then this is the place. !!!!

    Tonight at Tierney's
Patron:"hey, have you seen whatshisface, you know that Porto rican guy that came in the other day"
Barkeep:"nah, we don't let Porto Ricans in here"

    Tierney's, nuff said.

Extra points because my parents met here. :)

I don't like bars in general, but the atmosphere at Tierney's is relaxed and friendly and that makes it win, over all the other stupid bars in the area that try too hard.

Tierney's is like your favorite pair of jeans. They might be old and not that visually attractive, but you don't wear them to show off, you wear them because they're comfy. :)

I've only ever come to Tierney's on weekdays (specifically Mondays), so I can't speak for the weekend crowd or any special events. It's a great casual bar in Montclair. A perfect "After" bar (after work, after class, after dinner). I mean, I'm not going to come here for a raging party or a martini social, but if you want to hang out, have some cheap pitchers with your friends, & watch the game(s), this is the place to go.

Oh, and bring some cash. They don't take cards here.

First and best thing to remember about Tierney's is that is a bar with a grill - or at least that is what is says on the napkin dispeners...they pour one of the best Guinness pint around and the Harp Lager is plenty cold....this is a real shot and beer joint - and everyone is welcome...college kids on Friday and Saturday nights for the live music, business people for lunch and happy hour during the week, and families after sporting events on the weekend - all have been in there...and be sure to try the burgers - the best around!

$7 for a Harp beer, others were pretty cheap.
Lots of space with upstairs and downstairs.
Music upstairs. Pretty empty for a Friday, but it was a holiday weekend. Can be a mixed bag clientele- Hipster and Old people.

next to a quick mart store

The burgers are great. They have $2.00 pabst pints. Local crowd plus the montclair state crowd means it can get tough to find a seat on the weekends in the winter.

Great for a Guinness and burger. It is not a gourmet burger on a brioche bun with lettuce tomato and onion. Just beef, a soft bun, and add cheese if desired. Don't ruin it with anything other than American.

If you are looking for a college type crowd during the week and local place w/college crowd on the weekends, this is a good place to go. I didn't try their food but apparently their burgers are "to die for"...hmmmm...bartenders are cool and quick as this place gets really crowded on the weekends. Good beer selection and they only accept CASH...I have been to this place several times for drinks only and worth a stop in if you are in the area. It's loud inside so don't expect to converse easily.

Where are my fellow Montclairites??? Tierney's is a Montclair institution! On that premise alone, it deserves 5 stars, come on!! Montclair just would not be Montclair without Tierney's Tavern and we ALL know it!!
Yes, it's like Cheers for us and the place we all think to go when we go home because we know 2 things, 1) it will always be exactly the same as when we were there in high school and college and 2) we are sure to at run into a couple of old friends sitting at the bar who are also home for a visit!
    LONG LIVE TIERNEY'S!!!

I don't care if this bar is cash only -- Tierney's is a local and legendary establishment.  The service might be a little rough but maybe the clientele tends to be a bit cheap .... show the bartenders a little respect and believe me they will take care of you.  This was and still is my favorite bar in montclair.  I moved to Verona recently and it breaks my heart that I can't stop by Tierneys for a burger (which is out of control ridiculously good) and a brew ..... then come back later for the music and the unbelievably chill atmosphere.  This is a place for the young and young at heart.  And seriously.... where else can you go to order a Guinness and a shot of Jameson for you and your special lady friend for 15 bucks?! Good times. Don't let the crowd scare you. You will have a blast if you just give it a try.

Best burger in Essex County. I was (and still am) loyal to Pals Cabin but Tierney's has began to surpass it.  The meat is not loaded with a bunch of fillers, just great quality burger always cooked to perfection and excellent bar food.

Tierney's can get packed with a pretty diverse crowd ranging from colleges kids in their flannels, construction workers in their flannels and old men in their flannels to the annoying Montclair yuppies. You can bring families.   It's pretty basic almost McSorely's looking inside with long picnic style seating. If its busy you have to get up and go to the bar to place your beer and food orders, if quiet the bartenders will come over to you. Upstairs is where they have live music.

Someone in an earlier post mentioned the grumpy bartenders. I have been going to Tierney's on and off for about 20 years and i have never witnessed a bartender with a 'tude. Quite the opposite, they are attentive and professional. It can get packed to the gills in there so like any bar you'll have to wait for a drink at times. They can spot an a-hole a mile away so if you act like one , you'll be treated accordingly.

I highly recommend Tierney's as a place to hang out , have a beer and a burger. Nice beer selection as well.

As long as you're not expecting much, you'll be satisfied. A burger and beer basically. Gotta pay cash. (Hello, it's 2010!)  It gets crowded. I sat with a group of 8 and there was no service to speak of - get up, go to the bar, order and pick it up yourself.

They have bands at times though I haven't been there for that.

Oh boy.  I went there on Friday night at around midnight and was surprised to find that this dive bar was packed.  With old men.  Hitting on young college girls.

    Ewww.

This is a pretty rough place. My sister and I visited because Nauna's recommended that we purchase a bottle of wine from here to enjoy during our dinner. So we entered and asked the bartender if we could access the store. He grunted.

Eventually we asked again and he told us to "hold on". We waited over 15 minutes until he said he "didn't have time for us". Really?? The place was half-full with families that were slumming on $3 beers. Puhhhllease! We were ready to purchase a nice bottle of wine for a celebratory dinner. Don't worry. We won't be back.

Great local place to hang out at.  Pleasant and laid-back atmosphere, very friendly and attentive bartenders, good musical selection on the jukebox.  I've spent the better part of this year at Tierney's, be it during the week for dinner/drinks, or on weekends with friends, roomies, or even dates.  You can't go wrong here.

They have daily food specials which are usually very good for the price.  They have a lot of different beers on tap, which is great (can't beat $2 PBR).  I've never had any trouble here, and never been disappointed with the service.  It can get a bit hairy in here on the weekends, in terms of finding a stool/table, but for the most part you will be fine.  The music certainly fits the atmosphere - you can't pick anything bad, and if you want something that's not already featured, you pay extra and have to wait for everyone else's songs to go first.

My one and only gripe with this place, is that you see the same groups of people here EVERY SINGLE TIME.  Sick of the same group of girls/guys that sit at the end of the bar hogging all of the seats, the aging "cop" who seems to be there all the time day or night, girls who seem like they're looking for attention but never talk to anyone aside from others in their group, and the people who think they're "deep" because they select "indie" music on the jukebox and bring BOOKS to read while sitting at the bar.  Aside from that, awesome place.  :D

I went to Tierney's Tavern for a wings fix a night or two ago. Be advised: the wings come out with no sauce on them, just a small tub on the side. They also taste very similar to KFC wings...probably something in the breading? I was looking for wings covered in sauce and extra crispy. Unfortunatly, they weren't at Tierney's.
Also, we ordered a burger, which came out with no fixings (lettuce, tomato, onion). I'm not sure if we were supposed to ask for them or if naked burgers are the norm at Tierney's.

The best local bar and they serve a mean burger.  It's where us ex-locals go when we're in town for Thanksgiving or Christmas to run into all the jackoffs we went to High School with.

Drinks are pretty inexpensive and the bartenders are friendly. The only gripe I have about this place is that it gets ridiculously packed after a certain time, and its sometimes impossible to get near the bar, let alone finding a seat somewhere. Great place for yourself and maybe one or two friends, not so good if you're going with a whole bunch of people.

Eh...just a burger and beer joint.  CASH ONLY.  The place was busy, but not over-crowded.  We ate lunch there...seemed to be a bunch of middle aged men drinking Bud Light or Miller - if that's your scene - then this place is for you!

Pretty off the Radar kewl type happening little place. Gets packed on the typical college bar nights. And the beer is cold... and you can drink it. There are tables you can sit at and they have video games and some darts. The bartenders are usually pretty kewl and you might even get a buyback if your lucky. Try the burgers and onion rings they are insanely good for some reason. Also the 2$ PBR is almost legendary.

This is a pretty low-key place just a short hop from Bloomfield Ave.   Sort-of Irish themed with a nice old-school charm.  Apparently the place has been around since the 30's.

Large bar and about 8-10 tables.  There is also a second floor, but I didnt get to see it.  Apparently they have live music upstairs on the weekends.  I went on a Monday night and it was pretty relaxed with only about a dozen people inside.  Bartenders were friendly, drinks were reasonably cheap.  Food was pretty good...just the standard burgers and sandwiches pub fare, nothing fancy.  Decent juke box.

Id imagine it gets much more packed on the weekends, but it seems like a nice low-key, unpretentious place to grab a few drinks during the week.   Will likely visit again.

For some reason I like this place but can't quite figure out why. Sure, I love dirty bars with cheap pints. But there's something missing here despite my return visits.

Maybe it's the juke box. But I always need to pay the extra money to find decent songs and then can't hear my choices over the loud din of drunken patrons. Maybe it's the Big Buck Hunter. But I never get to play because some college kids are always hogging the machine. Maybe it's the golfing game. But it's not even real GoldenTee. Maybe it's the bands playing upstairs. But I've yet to pay the cover and check anything out (instead just suffering through the sounds bleeding into the downstairs bar).

I guess it's really just the cheap beer and the absence of pretension.
