The ladies in Savannah should be on Tyra's next top model! Every lesbian that walked in the door was stunning and I've never said that about the ladies. I've never seen such beautiful les in NYC.
ok ok..
The place is very cute and intimate. It is definitely more of a lounge than a dance club. Cozy sofas and chairs all over the place. One of my favorite spots would be the outside garden in the back...very cute! The people that work here are friendly, what you would expect. It also seems to be a neighborhood bar also. Though, we're talking about Savannah so the community of queers is very tiny and everyone knows everyones business I am sure.
Overall, a cute place..it was just dead on the night we went and i didn't have a blast.
I wanted to like this place more than I did; but the fact that it was almost empty and the music was from a decade ago, I couldn't...
This place has the feel of a cool, speakeasy lounge, really like the different rooms; comfy couches, and the tiny outdoor.
Hopefully this was only because of the Jazz Festival because it has potential. Â If I would were in charge, I would improve it by plugging my Ipod or replacing the DJ...
again, prices in Savannah up there above the clouds.
I would give this place another try, maybe I will have better luck next time!
All time favorite Savannah wine bar. Great atmosphere and amazing music. The decor is different and dark. Once and a while they will open the basement and back room for VIP events and its just beautiful and amazing. The basement reminds me of an old vampire catacomb with candelabras and raw stone walls and floors. Just has so much mystery and character. Great drinks and talented bartenders.
Review Source:The unofficial gay bar of Savannah.
Weekends, the place is usually packed and overflowing with loud techno music that does not match the size of the place (very little to no dance space). Luckily the layout and decor are both fabulous; upstairs there are a couple couches and lounges sit on and there are two patio areas and a back room to escape the crowds.
On weeknights, the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed and you are able to get a seat at the bar and get the full experience of their great and friendly barstaff.
If you are lucky enough to be there for their parties/events, go! They usually get outfits for the bartenders to wear... believe me, you won't be sorry.
My friend and I literally stumbled upon this bar...or stumbled into as it were. Â Being from DC, I'm used to bars in converted rowhouses, so the size wasn't unusual. Â The crowd was super friendly and we actually ended up meeting some pretty cool people there. Â My only complaint is that the music could have been a little better...mostly generic techno beats. Â Other than that, GREAT place to hit up if you're in the historic district.
Review Source:Venus is certainly one of the better bars in the Historic District. The atmosphere is simply great and they really did a lot with a very difficult space: as the interior is long and narrow, the owner was smart enough to position the bar itself down the left side of the first floor, leave enough room up front for a DJ to spin and people to dance, and leave the upstairs a combination of lounge and funky parlor atmosphere. There's also a really nifty upstairs, outdoors, porch area where you can smoke if you do or you can just get outside for a moment. As others have mentioned in their reviews, the interior is rather dark and there's a number of cute little nooks and places to make out or whatever, or for that matter just sit and chill with a friend.
Also as others have noted, this is not a gay bar, per se, but a gay-friendly bar: early in the evenings in fact you'll find lawyers in their business suits having martinis here on many a day as there are a number of law firms nearby. After ten or so at night, it gets downright clubby on some nights when there is a DJ and it attracts a good gathering of SCAD kiddies and yeah, a lot are gay. However, there's always a great number of girls over here too: it's a nice mix.
What I love about Venus, aside from the interior design, is the quality of drinks they pour and the general upscale yet not snobbish atmosphere. I've met the owner (Shelly, I think her name is) and she bought the building back around 2000 or 2001 and renovated it and she's done a stellar job. She wanted an alternative to the standard Savannah bar of the time (yeah, yeah, there's a number now in the trendy catagory but remember this was 2001!) and I think she's done right in meeting her objectives.
I cannot name how many hours I've spent here in a drunken stupor dancing with cute boys and pretty girls (albeit many with too much makeup, but hey, that's the Savannah way!). They used to (perhaps still do?) serve up a coconut-flavored martini with a little plastic goldfish in it . . . the martini is blue so . . . get it? It's like the fish is swimmin' around. A word of warning though: those fish are plastic -- apparently a lot of folks thought maybe they were gummy like gummy bears but nooooo. Don't attempt to eat. Not candy!
Really fun place to hang out any night of the week. Â Awesome DJs on certain nights, but nooo space to dance. Â Both floors, inside and outside, have lots of places to sit and lounge. Â The overall decor is dark and sensual, with awesome use of lighting. Â Normally have lots of different theme parties that many patrons will dress up for. Â Surprised that no other reviewers have mentioned this is a gay bar. Â Definitely worth stopping by for a drink and the interesting crowd!
Review Source:Love this bar....crazy crowd...beautiful decor upstairs, I mean, its old, but very cool. I love the side rooms and the back VIP area......haha....many good times had in there. The only thing that Venus lacks is more dance room space. Different crowd...good wine list. One of my favorite bars in Savannah for sure. They also have a lot of fun little parties!
Review Source:This place is a total gem!
After a night of schlepping about the town looking for cute boys and good drinks, we finally stumbled into this awesome bar!
Its gorgeous, the bartenders (male AND female) are hot and sassy, and it had music to die for. My drinks were as good as any I have had in SF, the boys were gorgeous, and the girls looked drunk, classy, and easy (not that I care much about the former or latter factors in women).
The only negative is the lack of adequate dance space, because i -seriously- wanted to shake it to the rockin music that was happening.
It has these lovely booths where you can sneak away for a little kiss, or a super fun back porch for the smokers. I TOTALLY recommend this place to anyone who wants a fun night. I am certainly hitting it back up before i leave.
