Better than average beer selection for the area featuring local and national micros. I visited on wing night and the wings were great. Kids meals were decently priced and otherwise fine. In summary, above average bar type food priced right with a nice beer selection. Certainly a good choice for a casual dinner.
A note to the tavern itself - it would be good to delete the Megan T. review. It looks like an ad. If you are going to post your own review then try to be a bit more sneaky about it.
From the outside, it's obvious that this restaurant is not huge. But don't let that stear you away from all of the amazing things this place has to offer. Starting from the moment you walk in, you're greeted by the local wait staff that make you feel like you too are a local. Then you have the option of chosing one of the 21 beers they have on tap which has something for everyone; even Saranac Root Beer for the ones who do not wish to drink an alcoholic beverage. Their menu offers a great balance between bar food, soup, salad, sandwiches, and entrees, not typical of most tavern style restaurants. Their freshly made soups are all to die for! A few favorites being, Buffalo Chicken Wing, New England Clam Chowder, and Tomato Feta Florentine. And if you're not full from the delicious entree that you'll have eaten every bite, you will have the opportunity to try the delicious homemade cheesecake. I can honestly say I've never tried anything I don't like at The Village Tavern and it's definitely a place you wouldn't want to pass up!
Review Source:Really liked the burger I had. Â Went with the Village Tavern's "Classic" with cheese, Â which was their most basic burger--large, thick and very juicy. Â I ordered it cooked Medium and that's how it was served. Â It comes with fresh lettuce, tomato and a red onion slice (which I skipped), and a nice piece of cheddar on top. Â The burger and the bun were so thick and juicy, I enjoyed it without ketchup or anything else--very filling and really good. Â The burger also came with a side of chips made right on premises, which were warm and nicely salted--much better than ordinary potato chips. Â Price was reasonable, service was very good--all in all, a good. solid burger plate I highly recommend.
Review Source:I would've given this a four star, but I really need to give it a two star after my last visit, which might be my LAST visit for awhile.
When I first went there, I LOVED the place. Food was great, prices were great for a college student like me, the vibe of the place was home-y, the service I was given was great, as the waiter was amazingly nice.
However, my second time there, my experience was ruined. I had the same waitress and everything, and everything was going fine...until two, very rude people sat on the table next to my girlfriend and I. These two people were very loud and continuously talked about my girlfriend and I while we were eating and at the same time kept staring at us. Sorry to say it, but I don't know these people, and I feel highly uncomfortable when you can hear these two people talk about us as if they know anything.
Then, I heard one of the girls speaking to one of the waitress and overheard that that they worked there. That really made me dislike the restaurant, as these very RUDE people were affiliated to the restaurant.
Then, as my girlfriend paid for the check (since she wanted to do something nice for my birthday), the two girls were again saying stuff loudly like "Oh, she's paying!?" Sheesh, mind your own business.
After this experience, my girlfriend and I will not be returning for awhile. I'm sorry to the owner. I loved this place and the food, but if those girls sitting next to me were off-duty waitresses of the restaurant, they really destroyed my image of the place.
interesting place. its really inexpensive. it seems so family-business like becaise the owners son was working there.
i despised the service. the girl who was serving us didnt realize that we werent done with our food and basically forced us to shove food down our throats. when we asked her to make two checks she didnt care about who ordered what. she also spaces out when you request something.
the food itself is quite good. a bit heavy. i was expecting bar food, but it seems to have a very family restaurant vibe... at least during the day. the tavern chips could do without the blue cheese crumbles... make it into a sauce if anything?
To all my fellow Livingston County residents, here's a description you'll understand:
The Village Tavern is The Wadsworth Grill meets Applebee's, with a little Vital Spot.
My father knows the owner of this place, so I'm going to make my criticism more constructive and less cynical than usual.
First, I'll start with the strengths:
- The Yukon Chips are awesome - freshly fried, not overly salted, warm, crispy, outstanding.
- The beer menu is better than most places in the area. It's a little hop-heavy, but I don't know many people in LC that like malty beer, so I guess it's a wise business move.
- It seems like a good sports bar. There are big LCDs all over the place and they have a lot of game day food specials. If I did more "man stuff," I'd probably come here to do it.
- The outdoor seating is really nice.
- For non-alcoholic diners, they have Saranac Root Beer on tap.
- This place is locally-owned by a guy that has lived in Livingston County his entire life, as opposed to Applebee's, which is owned by a corporation, making it a lot more evil, from a "I support local business" point-of-view.
Now, the "needs improvement" section:
- Under no circumstances (even to save money) should there be bacon bits, rather than bacon strips, on a burger. Shouldn't happen.
- The back room really needs some sound dampening. There are only a few tables back there and it's so loud that you can't hear the other people at your table. I'd advise diners to not sit back there, if at all possible, if you care about listening to the other members of your party. I had a headache after about 30 minutes.
- The texture of the burgers could use some work. Their toughness makes me think that they are either pressed while cooking or formed using a plate or heavy hands, and most likely made from frozen beef. Take it easy when handling your meat, guys.
- They didn't have any paninis when I was there. If you can't make them, don't put them on the menu.
- It's "please seat yourself," but there's also a hostess station. Confusing.
I'll definitely visit the Village Tavern again and I will try to persuade anyone who proposes going to Applebee's to come here instead. Although it's not perfect, it's a great addition to the "uptown" section of Geneseo, which is currently infested by chain restaurants and auto repair stores.
