Nice spot to Karaoke in the city. Went for my friend's birthday and they don't allow liquor inside which is inconvenient because what's better than drunk karaoke? I know sober karaoke is boring as hell. So go drink before coming in to enjoy yourself. The rooms are decent sized and we fit everyone inside. The song selections are nice and there is a small screen below the big karaoke screen so you can choose songs to put on the list while others are singing. It's a nice set up and pretty good but I don't like how they have covers and you tube videos and stuff as options for lyrics, so beware when choosing your songs. Other than that pretty standard stuff and they have all the hits and good old songs as well. If you are Taiwanese or whatever they got your stuff too. The remote is a little hard to navigate but once you figure it out, you are all good.
Review Source:This place is alright m. It has parking space. The selection is alright and the rooms varies depending on what you get. I got a couch that had knife carve on the leather couch. Pretty ghetto. Another time I have a room with feathers- shaped heart on the wall. Music selection is average. Price can be okay to hefty depending on the size.
Review Source:Ok, so we came here on Saturday night to sing... because eplus and pandora were all booked up for the night. Oh and we just didn't want to go back to Millbrae, since they still have yet to update their songs list.
We walked in and the people working were a bit rude. But whatever. The guy gave us our room number. Then he gave us the remote and 4 wireless microphones. He said nothing after.
Got to our room, and I found it a bit gross in there. More like it smelled gross. Anyway, took us quite awhile to figure out how to select songs etc since everything was in Chinese. The sound wasn't all that great either. Blah. Oh and apparently, no alcohol allowed. So strict... they even have cameras in the room.
The reason I'm giving 3 stars.... their song selection! What an array of chinese songs there are to pick from! Oh and they have a lot of the newer american hits as well! All in all, we were there from 11-2pm. Final cost was $138. Not too shabby.
My go-to place for karaoke (not like I have any other choice in the Sunset area)!!! I loooove to karaoke!!! The English songs are pretty updated and that's my favorite thing about Voiz. Plus, they have kpop but no, sadly, no romanji so you'll just have to sing it out of memory. However, compared to the first time that I came here during their grand opening, the interior has become significantly deteriorated. There are tears in the seating and the paint is peeling off in some rooms. The microphone turns off by itself. The air smells like cigarette smoke.
Also, Friday nights are always packed so I suggest coming on a weekday or weeknight instead.
$13/hour is already music to my ears.
Their music selection here is superb. English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Oldies. And the best part? They play the actual music videos, not some weird video with scenes that don't relate to the song. Looking for current top 40? They're on top of it!
They do allow smoking inside so you might end up with a really smokey room. Customer service here was pretty good. We asked if they could turn up the air conditioning in hopes to vent out the smoke and they had no problem doing so, the guy even replaced a microphone for us and tested it before going back outside. The rooms could use a little bit of refurnishing and sprucing up, but it's not a big deal.
The only flaw of this Karaoke system is how tedious it is to find a song. You either have to know the song off the top of your head or scroll through each artist page. No shouting out a bunch of numbers to the person holding the remote.
Feel free to bring your phone chargers as there are outlets available! I know how important that is to most people nowadays. :P
Tonight me and my friends were meeting up to karaoke. One of my friend reserved a room for 7 30. We arrived there and the guy at the counter helped us, he was cool.
One hour went by, and we were having fun. Some lady came in and told us to leave. We got frustrated, pissed, confused, and she didn't care to explain. She was rude, and told us we have to leave. We ignored, and continue singing. She came back, we demand the reason, she said someone reserved the spot and they have been waiting for a long time.
We then left, and paid. We wasn't too happy of paying her, and there was no one outside waiting........I had nothing to say. Good job, just lost 10 customers. Pretty sure it don't mean anything to you.
Ps, my friend flicked her off when we left.
This tends to be the go-to place for karaoke with my UCSF friends. It's okay when you're looking to fill your karaoke craving, but it's definitely not my favorite place to karaoke in the city.
My main issue with this karaoke joint is the song selection. They do tend to have the newer songs, but when you look up certain bands and singers and find that the songs offered are some of the most obscure ones you've heard of .... that's an issue. Prime example? No 'Don't Stop Believing' by Journey!!! And they call this a karaoke place??? I'm flabbergasted! So don't be surprised to find the biggest or most mainsteam songs of certain artists to be completely missing.
I also have issue with the new-fangled machines all the karaoke places seem to be jumping the bandwagon for. I am NOT a fan. I hate how only one person can really select songs, and how you're limited to the one screen when searching. What if you want to be searching through Japanese songs while someone is scrolling through female Western singers? Not convenient at all. I miss the old-fashioned books and remote way of karaoke.
Speaking of their system, it's not a very good system in general. They definitely cater to a Chiense crowd, as most of the songs are Chinese. Even the Korean songs are difficult to flip through, as they're written in Chinese characters, so I have no idea who is who and what song is what. The system also lags a bit. Plus, we always seem to have some type of microphone issues everytime we go that takes a few minutes (or more) to sort out.
The rooms were okay - usually clean enough, but not the cleanest karaoke place I've been to. There is usually a smokey cigarette-y smell clinging to the rooms though.
It is a pretty good price for karaoke and there's easy parking in the street (with a small lot next to the building).
Cool place.
New songs? They got it. Even had lesser known songs that are CD hits but not really mainstream hits. Sang a bunch of songs here that other places never had.
Nice system in place...HD tvs with the real music videos, no fat Samoan guy or squirrels running past your screen while you sing...you know what I'm talking about if you've been around.
System is easy to navigate and tons more responsive than those touch screen places like Pandora. Besides some minor lag issues we found every song we were looking for.
Best part was the add vocals to the video. Turns the artist's voice on which helps if you feel you're out of sync with the lyrics or when you don't know a song that well. Haven't seen this feature anywhere else yet.
Overall a good experience and will likely be back at some point. Only "negative" is we found too many songs to sing and we spent a lot, but the prices are reasonable to I'll forgive that.
LOVED IT! I would give it 5 stars if they allowed alcohol.
Songs are up to date and kind of easy to navigate if you kno what you're doing.
I made a reservation for a friend's birthday and we got a room that was bigger than expected and it was pretty fun! I'll definitely come again once I get the time and $$$!
Your car is always the best place to sing. no one can hear your lousy voice amidst the chaotic mess of our lives. but when you absolutely have to bring out your inner American Idol this place will do. pretty decent song selection.
get lightly inebriated before coming. you'll [think you] sound much better. or just get piss drunk. then no one has to listen to you yell on the mic. up to you. more mic time for me, and other beautiful people.
Extended list of sings including the most recent popular ones (they even have the GLEE CAST!) However, although they got the artist in their database, very often they are missing the main songs known by the artist. Nonetheless, it was decent, fairly clean. The blonde hair dyed boys at the front counter doesn't communicate with each other very well. We got charged twice for the drinks we ordered because one of the server didn't notify the other that the drinks were paid for in the beginning.
Just make sure you are on top of your bill.
This is actually a pretty decent karaoke joint. I enjoy how there are snacks and drinks available, the prices are a little cheaper than in J-town and the rooms are on the larger size.
Now onto what I didn't appreciate, the VERY smokey hallways. I has specifically asked for a room that wasn't used for smoking or hadn't been recently smoked in. The first hour inside was fine and then I started smelling smoke through the ventilation. It's supposed to be ventilation for a REASON. You are supposed to ventilate the smoke OUT of the building and not recirculate it into other rooms!
I may be back seeing how the hubby's co workers like coming here but I'll have to make them change my room out if I smell smoke again. BTW, I have asthma so it may not bother someone else as much but I really NEED to be able to breath clean air.
Pretty neat place! I always wanted to try a karaoke place up in SF!
Place seems to cater mostly to Chinese people, which is a new experience for me because I'm used to Korean karaoke places. It's a cute and modern-looking place, and looks nice.
Comfy couches, and I liked the set up. However, rooms are crappily designed in that microphones have a feedback problem... if the mics are working at all, that is. I needed to fiddle with the cord to get it to work. Frustrating.
Bathrooms are GROSS GROSS GROSS. Staff seems to be more interested in looking fashionable and fly than actually get the place clean and running. We were able to get our room fast... but there were people in there already, just chilling! It was supposedly an empty room... Come on, you guys aren't working at a trendy boutique, you guys are working at a KARAOKE place. No one cares if you look like pop stars, especially when it seems like most of the clientele are guys. I swear, I have never seen so many guys just hanging outside here smoking. Although, I don't think it helped that our party was also mainly male...
Song selection is interesting. They have Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese, and Western songs. Selection was kind of awesome. I never been to a karaoke place with DISNEY songs. I was so excited.
But seriously... minus one star for staff, minus one star for bathroom.
If you wanna lose your voice, you really need to come to Voiz. Â Here is why....
The microphone never had any sound in it. And whatever they exchange for it always have the same problem.
Then they always said they have no larger room which clearly they do have it. Â So we are squeeze into this small room and you know what happen. People fighting each other for the mic, but that's OK. It really helps friendship bonding. Â Good experience!
And their staff always have couple guys looking at their Facebook pages checking out hot Asian girls photo, but hardly ever respond to our customer requests. Â All they said it's a "no" then back at their computer screen starring at hot girls in Facebook.
I felt that I was serve by bunch of high school kids.
My friend once told me that if someone sliced me open, a plantain would pop out, because I'm yellow on the outside and white on the inside. Â And incidentally, we'd just had plantains at a Peruvian restaurant.
So, when my very white friend suggested a night of singing Chinese songs, I immediately decided that I would send my first-born child to Chinese school and force them to stick with it until they mastered the Chinese language, written and spoken. Â Darn my parents for being softies and not making me learn!
One of my friends suggested Voiz, so we reserved a room for 12 of us, and off we went on a Saturday night. Â Parking was super easy because it's about 5 blocks up the hill from 19th Ave. Â The rooms were really well sound-proofed, but the whole place looked sort of old-ish and could use a major cleaning.
The system is sort of primitive, as it's not very efficient for navigating quickly, though it wasn't difficult to figure out. Â The song selections were pretty wide and random for the English ones (they also have Korean, Chinese and Japanese songs), because while there were some current songs, we often wondered "HOW DO THEY NOT HAVE THIS SONG?!" while flipping through the different artists.
$41/hour for the big room, and we had it for 3 hours, so between about 12 of us, the total for the night came out to be around $10/person. Â Not bad for a night of Journey, Backstreet Boys, and watching my white friend singing in Chinese.
NOTE TO SELF: Lazy Sundays Exist For A REASON!
Lazy Sundays are meant for recovering from the weekend's drunken debauchery by vegging out in front of the TV with a box of coconut water in one hand and a fork full of ramen in another. Apparently, this wasn't the case this past Sunday. Lazy Sunday turned into Soju/Karaoke Sunday and the following is what happened as a result:
*Britney's "Till The World Ends" became a Chiudo *FIST PUMPING* session
*Two grown men serenading to their own mics with 98 Degrees' "Invisible Man"...GAY!
*J shufflen' and doing the running man to LMAFO's "Party Rock Anthem"
*Singing my heart out to Leona Lewis' "Better In Time" until people gave me weird looks because I was too into "it" and didn't notice they turned off the background vocals on me...PHUCKERS!
*Turning the couch into a trampoline party (at least this time I didn't fall and face plant onto the table)...PHEW!
P R O S
*CHEAP ROOMS:
--Happy Hour Specials (till 8 PM): $12/hour
--Regular Price is $22/hour (most places charge about $35/hour)
*GOOD ENGLISH SONG SELECTIONS WITH NEWER SONGS (e.g. Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night", Pitbull & Neyo's "Give Me Everything", Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass", Taylor Swift's "Mean", Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory" and etc.) They also have a good selection of Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese Songs.
*COMPUTERIZED REMOTE CONTROLLED SYSTEM: Organized by "New", "Hits", "Categories" (e.g. female, male, group) and by "Alpha"
*SERVES SNACKS & DRINKS (no alkie): Stick with the boxed drinks because my friend said the drinks they make tastes like sh*t.
C O N S
*POOR VENTILATION
*SMOKING IS ALLOWED IN ROOMS
TIP: Even though they don't sell or allow alkie, you can still sneak it in the ghettofab way via water bottles and carrying a big bag. SHHHH!!! They have cameras in their parking lot so make sure you have your bottles filled and/or bags packed before leaving the car.
My Sunday night turned into a rendition of Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" complete with pictures posted on FB. :X I knew payback was going to be a b*itch. *Sigh*
Voiz has a great selection of karaoke songs to choose from. Wide selection of recent hits and Asian songs, along with many other genres. In a convenient location on Taraval, serving the Sunset/Parkside/West Portal area.
HOWEVER, I must point out - where is the fun in karaoke without the availability or accessibility to alcohol?! Yep, alcohol is "supposedly" banned here. This may end up hurting their business more than helping. At least BYOB should be an option (legally) or else people will either 1) sneak it in, or 2) choose elsewhere. Something for the owners to take note on!
Otherwise, a nice karaoke place worth going to.
I honestly believe Voiz Karaoke is one of the best karaoke places in SF. There's no parking lot or anything to my knowledge but we are usually able to find parking up the street fairly quickly. It's also pretty convenient to catch the MUNI if you don't drive. The rooms are usually really clean and nice when we go. I like the colors and decor of the rooms. The karaoke system itself is super easy to use since everything is computerized.
The only thing is that they don't really have that many new English songs. It's an okay amount but not as much as some other karaoke places I've been to but my friends and I found it fine because we usually mixed it up with some Chinese as well as English songs and there is definitely an abundance of good Chinese songs :D
OH! And if possible, go during happy hour. It's so much cheaper. It's been a little while since I've gone so I can't recall the exact price or times :[ but go call and find out :D because it's a good deal :]
located on Taraval, between 14th and 15th. This place isnt bad at all. Â Why?
Because they have the most updated Cantonese/Mandarin songs. Â English songs selection is smaller compared to the other ones, but they still have a good amount of update ones.
This place can get very crowded during the weekends and possibly late night on weekdays. Â Make sure you call in advance to be sure they have a room for you. Â They ask for an ID when checking in, so PLEASE be sure to remember picking it up as you pay and leave! They will NOT remember to give your ID back. Â My friend left it there one time because she forgot to pick it up. Â
Overall the rooms are pretty clean. The furnitures are alright. The walls are great with sound-proof I believe it was $22/hour for a room up to 6 people. Good place to hang out if you enjoy karaoke.
Not bad at all, just don't mind the smell of smoke in the rooms. Â Patrons could keep the bathrooms a little cleaner however! Â $22/an hour for a room is a lot cheaper than the $35/hour I remember paying at for the place in Millbrae years ago. Â Happy hour before 8 makes the rooms only $12/hour, which is super cheap, but who really feels like singing before 8?
The song selection is extensive and up to date. Â They also have drinks and snacks if you work up a thirst or an appetite after singing some songs. Â They also have a parking lot on the side. Â
Towards the end of our session, the tv/audio went out for a few minutes, apparently this happened to a few of the other rooms as well. Â Technical difficulties? Â Anyways, this reasonable karaoke place gets the job done and at a decent price!
Meh. I've experienced better.
We had 5 people... The room they gave us was smaller than my bathroom at home. Speakers were okay. They didn't use high tech wireless microphones, still those old corded ones. Also the menu and song selecting device was slow and hard to use.
No drinks allowed. boring!
Finally, me and my friends made another visit to Voiz so that I can belly out some Chinese and English tunes.
Their database is pretty up to date. My friends and I were able to go through many English top 40 songs and even some oldies. The more recent English songs have corresponding music videos but much of the older songs have those cheesy videos of cityscapes and skimpy girls on yachts. I'm very satisfied with the song selection though.
The three of us shared a small room during happy hour (2-8 pm), sang for a little more than 2 hours and only paid 27 dollars! At 12 bucks an hour, it's crazy affordable and I would never ever want to go at night and pay extra to sing ever again! I'll definitely be back!
After receiving some rather critical reviews ....it's time to "Voiz some praise" for Voiz Karaoke in SF!! It's really cleaned up it's act from some previous visits... A change in ownership has brought the place into 2010...cooler decor, much cleaner, they have a private parking lot, food is now served AND their selection of English songs has increased tenfold!!
Word to the wise...definitely make a reservation...otherwise you will be stuck in a holding pattern for and hour or 2..at which time all of the alcohol you have consumed will have been processed by your liver and you may lose you desire to get up in front of a group of your nearest and dearest and sing "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" (or the rest of Meatloaf's catalog) at maximum decibels...you've been warned!!
**Would have been 5 stars...but the one thing they can/should improve on is the AC system....rooms get exTREMEly warm...akin to singing in a sauna! Frankly, our group went thru more towels than Elvis Presley singing at Caesars Palace in 1975...yeah...THAT HOT!!!
Room 10 is pleasant looking and roomy! We met up with some friends after oktoberfest and we needed a place to chill so we came here.
the room had 2 lcd tv's and one lcd monitor. the couch were comfy too. song choices for English is a bit limited, very few hit songs. they had plenty of Chinese songs. this place seems to be my friends karaoke place so they might have good choices. what i like about this place, from the limited videos i saw, they use the real music video as their background. there were few song with those funny, random clips.
Its my first time at a karaoke place, i've got nothing to compare to unless you count having a magic mic hahaha but yah its a nice place. When you go outside the room, you can here the rest of the rooms. you hear a lil sound coming from your neighbor but its not to a point where it is bothersome. is that how sound proof works? not to sure.
Came twice last week. Thats what she said. Â Easy to get rooms, you can call ahead of time, or come a on weekday.
Mics are def. better than Fillmore, music list isnt as updated, but you will find some oldies that youll love!
I think Karaoke, or K, is a go hard or go home kinda thing. Theres no in between, you wont have fun in between which is why many ppl dont like to karaoke. So just sing like theres no tomorrow!! Â I lost my voice after.
I LIKED this place. Past tense.
You'd better make a reservation. And you'd better take the name of the person who helped you make that reservation. And you'd better come super early, or your "reservation" is going to be given to someone else.
First they'll pretend they never made or "can't find" your reservation, then when you get irritated and demand that you get the room you clearly reserved for 20 people for your birthday, they will meekly admit they gave it away to someone seven minutes ago and simply cannot ask them to leave.
Wtf? "This was a RESERVATION. That means you save the room." Counter guy stares awkwardly at me.
"Do you have any other rooms?"
"Well you see, if we did, you wouldn't see all these people standing here." Â RUDE!
Ridiculous. I've been the Voiz twice before this happened and both times were fine. Not great, just fine. Besides their crappy reservation system, the "service" button on your remote serves no purpose at all, really, and they're pretty strict about alcohol. They don't have the latest English songs but they've got the Chinese songs.
Other than the birthday fiasco, this place isn't horrible. But I'm still pissed!
Voiz is one of the better karaoke places in SF. Â Its cheap especially for happy hours, it has big rooms to pack in more ppl which make the cost even lower. Â (sometimes you can get it down to about $3/person/hr) Â It has great song selection (granted I mostly sing chinese songs) Â Not to mention its easier to found parking than the other karaoke places.
However, the sofa here are getting kinda old, where you can just sink into the seats, and if sitting at the wrong place, the feedback from the stereo is painful. Â Also, its pretty stuffy and we need to keep asking the managers to turn on the AC. Â
Oh yeah, and its easy to have a hold up of song selections due to one person can scrolling thru the song to found something he/she likes. Â But the last issue is common for most of the karaoke place now.
Overall, this place is still good relatively. Â As least if you compare it to the other places in SF. Â (Milpitas and Richmond both have karaoke places that is slightly better)
I called on a Tuesday to make a reservation for a Friday night, knowing well in advance it would be a pain to just show up late on a Friday night with a posse of 10. The guy on the phone, after putting me on hold for a bit, said my reservation was confirmed. Cue momentary sigh of relief.
Fast forward to Friday night. Friends were running late, so I called around 8 pm or so to push back our reservation for another hour. I was a bit skeptical that this was even a possibility, but phone-man said it was okay, without any hesitation. (I should have taken this as a sign.) At 11 pm, we realized we were supposed to be there, so I gave a polite courtesy call and told them we were on our way and would be there in 10 min. The guy said our room was still available, so we rolled on over and got there at 11.10 pm.
11.10 pm - we get there and confusion/chaos ensued. Apparently there was a group that was already in our room and had been there since 8 pm. I asked nicely how long it would be until they left and we could have the room that I RESERVED.
Guy at the counter: Uhhhh... they've been here for a while, we don't know when they will be done.
Me: What do you mean you don't know? Will it be a half hour? Two hours? Any estimates?
Guy: I don't know. Just wait it out.
Me: But I made a reservation? I called 3 times to verify?
Guy: We know you did. Just wait it out.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU - at this point, the friends start barging in and existentially questioning "What is the point of making a reservation if you cannot even honor it?" I guess we sort of ganged up on the staff, and cornered the manager? into writing on a post-it that we would get 30% off on our next visit. If i had taken the post-it, I would have probably ripped it up and thrown it in his face. I was so pissed I even started busting out my poor Mandarin to tell them that their "policy" was dumb and that they were screwing over their customers by offering reservations they could not guarantee - sometimes that has gotten me out of sticky situations, but not here.
It's pretty unfortunate we didn't get to go in. We probably would have ordered their whole supply of pot stickers. Oh well, their loss.
At around midnight, they called me back and said a room was ready, and at 30% off. Oh well. I was already too angry/drunk at that point to care.
Voiz is great for karaoke for these reasons:
1) GREAT prices; haven't found the same rates at other karaoke places yet. For 1-6 people (the small room), pay $22 per hour per room; $33 per hour for group of 7-12 (I think). There are also large rooms for up to 18 people, but I forget the price.
2) Quieter location than Fillmore; therefore, better parking (especially on weekends).
3) Better Japanese song selection than Fillmore Karaoke, although there's still not enough Japanese songs to satisfy me.
The downside of Voiz is that they don't update English/Western songs quite so often, so no hitting up Lady GaGa's "Bad Romance" nor Black Eyed Pea's "Meet Me Halfway" here. Oh well. There are random oldies, so it's not a complete disappointment. There's no search function; you just have to keep scrolling down the list of artists unfortunately. At least it kills time while you wait for your next song!
The decor of Voiz is funky; red walls, red rooms, etc. The rooms get a little hot after singing for awhile. The staff is nice and accommodating; my friend was asking for some Red Bull and the manager (I assume) said he'd put Red Bull on the drink menu since there's a demand for it. Not bad eh?
One of the better deals for karaoke in San Francisco; I heard there may be better deals/song selections outside of the city though. Any suggestions are helpful!
THIS PLACE IS WHACK................................
charged my friend twice on her credit card (TWO DIFFERENT PRICES) WTF?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....
shady.. SHADY..
I would give it zero stars.. but I'll give them ONE (I know thats all I'm allowed anyway lol) but ONE STAR because its new and clean and the rooms decor is pretty cool.
ALSO do not let them catch you sneaking alcohol in.. they will charge you an extra fee!... UGH
4 Stars
+ Good Sound Proof Rooms
+ Wide Variety of Music (English, Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese)
+ Decent Sound System
+ Roomy
+ Themed Rooms
+ Menu was easy to Navigate
+ 5% discount for Students (Bring your Student ID's!)
- Room #8 was uh... too Red...
- No Korean Songs :(
I really like this place! Voiz is probably one of the better karaoke places I've been to in the SF. I like how each room has a different theme to it. (You can look on their website at: http://www.voizmusic.com)
We came with a group of 4 around 8:30 (Just missed the $12 Happy Hour Special, D@rn it!) and we were given Room #8. My first thought of the room was that it was blinding red... literally blinding... @~@ The walls, and the couches were ALL red. Good thing no one sings with the lights on. It was quite roomy however, just the right size for the 4 of us.
The navigation menu is all in Chinese, but it's really easy to use unlike the other ones that I've been to. Voiz has a wide variety of music to choose from. (Chinese, Mainland, English, Japanese, Taiwanese Songs) Korean songs would be a nice addition if you ask me :D Wayne and my buddy Steph sang English songs, while my 2 other buddies and I sang mostly Chinese ones. I definitely built a stronger Chinese vocabulary singing so many Chinese songs that night!
They have good sound proof rooms too. Wayne says he wasn't able to hear us from the outside when he came to join me the last half an hour. We were singing quite loud too~ :D
I would definitely come back again and book Room #7 just for Wayne and I :D (FYI: Room #7 is the Pink room decorated with the White Feathers the the wall. So Pretty!)
Don't expect any type of service here whatsoever. Â It is strictly karaoke and nothing else. The four stars is for their wide and updated selection of songs and their easy navigation for the Chinese illiterate (yes I am talking about you Wendy). The sound system was pretty decent too.
Aside from the selection of songs, this place is kind of a disappointment. When you press the service button on the remote, you get nothing. You practically have to jump up and down at the front desk to get someone to acknowledge you to take your drink order. I just think it's wrong that they keep your ID until you leave. What if they lose it? Geez. Â The room was kinda small and the couches were uncomfortable. I so should have taken a look at their website and requested one of themed rooms. I guess I can't complain since they are only charging $20/hour.
I will be back. :)
One night, I decided it was time to work out my vocal chords. It had been a while since I went karaoke and I thought it would be a good time to do so.
So i called up my 3 cousins, and off we headed over to Voiz. Now this place has a pretty decent sound system, and the menu selection is fairly easy to use considering there is an english button for you to cross over on.
The only downfall on this place is the furniture...man o man they gotta replace the sofa/chair stuff. All cut up and everything....what happened?! this place would be a lot better if everything was kept in better condition.
3.50 stars.
Came here twice with a fairly large group. The decor is nice... you can change the color of the lights in the room! But the second time we went, our room had a very noticeable smell of cigarettes. And we were not very big fans of that. Also, throughout our singing sessions, we could smell "fresh" cigarettes emanating from somewhere in the other rooms.
The music selection is good. I can't read Chinese, but my friends who could were able to find a good selection of Cantonese/Mandarin songs and artists. As for the English songs, they got a fairly good database. But it's not as up to date as I would like.
When the real music video is showing, it's good. A lot of times, they had to play generic music videos. It was funny at first (b/c it was a ridiculous video), but after a while, it got annoying and repetitive.
I would come back. It's a fairly good place to kill a few hours with good company.
One thing I would note is that you should read and understand their policy. Technically, you cannot bring outside drinks, smoke, or "over-crowd" the rooms. If you violate these policies, your singing session fees could be doubled as a penalty. Just FYI.
Disclaimer: This is coming from an ABC who speaks limited Chinese.
I went her twice in the past month, both for birthday celebrations. While the staff is very friendly and the karaoke system is fairly easy to adjust to, I feel I would've had more fun at a different karaoke place. The English songs are vast, but the more current songs are few and far between. The most recent song English song they have asof 01/25/09 would be Jesse McCartney - Leavin'.
Suggestion for cheung K at a different location: see my profile and look at the review for New Face (a few blocks away from Voiz).
'Tis the season to spread cheer and good will to all, right?
What better way to do that then with song?
So I'm off to do some caroling.
The thing is I don't think my singing would invoke any kind of good will or cheer. Â Unless I stop singing and allow your ears to stop aching.

Okay, forget the caroling.
I'll just subject my friends to my appreciation of the Bee Gees at Voiz Music Studio.
It's relaxing to scream out classic hits like More Than A Woman, Billie Jean, She Bangs, and Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
The rooms are cozy, clean, and probably soundproof.
What I really like about this place is how much closer it is to home than the usual haunts at Japantown.
Good fun.

I've been to a fair amount of karaoke places this past year and this one would be the absolute best one yet! I wasn't surprised to see that we had to wait to get in despite reserving a room for 5 pm.
The facility is very clean but at the same time pretty small, like a typical karaoke place. The only flaw I see with the facility would be the bathroom. I am completely aware of the no alcohol policy but I don't think it's as well enforced as I've seen from the reviewers.
I've always been an old school chinese song guy and it's no surprise that I see a lot of classics but it's a lot more in depth than I believed. Most karaoke places I've been to would have the song with a symbol that reads "KTV" or "MTV" but I was pretty satisfied to see a lot of songs that had the term "Other" next to them. Within "other" are music video versions, concert versions, and cover versions by other artists which I believe is totally awesome because I don't like singing to an old school music video and prefer modern day concert versions.
For the English singers, it's safe to say that there are a good variety of songs but like many other places, the songs are generic with a music video of this horrible ugly fat chick.
Overall, it's one of the best and Happy Hour (12$/hour until 8 pm) is a bargain! They also sell snacks which I did not notice until our group left so I can't make a complete review but I guess that's what other reviewers are for.
I love this place! I can finally come to a K place around the Sunset area instead of driving down to Fillmore for a decent K place. Voiz has very nice and spacious rooms. Their music selection is very updated , but only for the Chinese songs. If you are someone who sings English songs only, their selections are very limited so you won't find any of the new songs. They have a lot of old English songs though. The last time I went I was so happy that they have the newest chinese songs like Khalil Fong! and i can sing to older chinese songs like Teresa Teng as well.
It is a good idea to go to their Happy Hour which is from 2 pm - 8pm and they charge $12 and hour. BUT if you are someone who likes to go at night and experience the price is still quite reasonable. It's also good to go with a bigger group of people because you can use the big rooms. one of them is very nice! with pink feathered walls with a heart shape.
