Its a great little bar with cool food options. I tried the bacon wings very good flavor but for $10 i wish they were bigger. We also tried the nachos, and thats why the rating of only 3. The chili had good flavor but the chips sucked. They tasted old/stale. Its not that hard to make fresh.
The place was small but it worked for me and the bartender Eric was very friendly.

I've only been once, but I really like the feel of this spot! It looks very small from the outside, but it's surprisingly spacious  with a nice big bar and high-top tables as well as tables in an inclosed outdoor area. It's decorated in a comfortable, welcoming way, and I totally forgot I was on Allens Ave while I was inside :)

The bartender was so nice! Very warm but not too chatty.

They carry lots of local products: Thomas Tew, Sons of Liberty, I don't know...a bunch of others I can't think of right now....but yay!

It sounds like they have some pretty solid bar food, although I didn't see or try any. But I would like to some time soon!

I'm glad this is here because it fills a real neighborhood void!

I had drinks with a friend at What Cheer Tavern today after work. I didn't know what to expect but had hopes that it would be good since there is such a lack of good bars on this side of town.

The beer selection was excellent! Narragansett seasonal was the only crap beer on the menu. Everything else was from greats like Stone. They had an excellent Scotch Ale the name of which escapes me now.

We also tried a few things from their food menu. The bacon wings were okay. I REALLY liked their kimchi deviled eggs. Good flavor there. Didn't quite mesh with my scotch ale but no big deal.

The place is small and very clean. The thing that surprised me was how well lit it was. From the outside it looks like the kind of place you might go to hide, much like a cave. Not so.

Definitely my favorite neighborhood bar to date.

Dave the bartender (and maybe the owner) is very knowledgeable about his beers and local brewer's scene. He told me one of his distributors is in talks with Dogfish to maybe start selling in Rhode Island again!!!!!!

Two thumbs up (two pints up anyway:)

What Cheer is a great little place a few miles from downtown Providence! Perfect spot for meeting friends for drinks after work. It is TINY, however (maybe 5 tables and 12 bar stools) so not great as a getting-to-know-you outing...usually very loud and crowded, and it's mostly full of regulars. The bar is very nice and has wood floors and stone paneling so even though it looks like a dive on the outside, it's really quite nice.
What Cheer has a great selection of local and semi-local beers of various prices. You can get cheap bottles or Budweiser or Narragansett or great stuff ($5-$6) on tap. They also rotate what they have on tap so the menu changes regularly.
What Cheer also has a very nice food menu and they try to use only local meat (not sure about the other products). The chef usually has some nice specials (which also rotate regularly) but when we went, the special was "Your Mom," which kind of summarizes the playful attitude of the place.
Definitely check out What Cheer next time you're trying something new!

When I came here, I was in the line of fire of an exploding tap that showered on me the clean crisp smell of locally sourced craft beer. Mixed with the aromas of awesome deep fried crispy Baffoni Farm bacon chicken wings, sweet potato fries with curry aeoli, and Goose Island Bourbon County stout seeping through my pores, I probably have never smelled better in my life.... Come to think of it, I'm really glad cannibals weren't around to sniff me out that night.

What can I say, I came for the beer and left wanting more of their food. Self proclaimed beer geek in me drew myself to this new craft beer bar. They have a small local centric tap offering that is sure to please. I was initially drawn there for the Lagunitas Sucks! Imperial IPA. It was cold perfectly poured. Here's the good part. I ordered the Poutine special. Let me tell you it was out of this world. Fries were perfectly cooked with the cheese melting into that decadent gravy. Never expected that from a little corner bar. Then I ordered the sinfully good bacon chicken wings. Just a perfect level of heat and a hint of bacon goodness in the background. Keep doing what your doing. It takes a lot to impress me and you hit it out of the park.

Ditto what everyone else has said. It is what it is: a Great freak'n local bar that just happens to have an amazing, and constantly evolving, beer menu. Good food. Nice folks; patrons & staff alike. The owner seems genuine and sincere in his eagerness to please, quench the proverbial thirst and to succeed in the bar biz. To anyone who's spent some time in the trenches in the Providence bar-scene you can see what a boon to the metro area that is. What can I say? We found a real gem here. Okay, one draw-back: the place is a bit small, which makes it wonderfully intimate when there's just a few of you, when you want a quite drink with your significant other, or you want to pop in on the way home from work for a hearty stout and a kindly word -But- a few times I've pulled up and the place is just so crazy packed [I'm glad for the success of it] that I end up skipping the visit. That speaks more to my agoraphobia perhaps than to an actual fault of the establishment. So do yourself a favor. Head down to this oasis just shy the city line, and have yourself an amazing draft- not sure what to try? It's ALL good!

I have only been to What Cheer Tavern once but I was impressed. Very friendly staff even on a Monday. Great beers on tap with the focus on local beers. The menu is small but satisfying. We got variations of the wings and chili and everyone enjoyed their food. It is a gem of a bar. Will be back!

What Cheer is exactly what I look for in a bar.  It has friendly staff, a fun vibe, and a great beer selection.

I had read reviews for this joint previously, but never wandered out to that particular neighborhood.  I tend to stick around to a lot of bars in my own 'hood.  Luckily for me, i had an adventurous friend and we ventured out to check out this gem.

When we walked in, there was a handful of people hanging out at the bar.  The lovely bartender offered us a warm greeting and a review of the drafts that they had available.  One of the best aspects of What Cheer is that almost all of the beers are local, as in from RI.  I do believe that one of the selections was from MA, but I'll let that slide because of how amazing they were.  We were offered samples of any beer that piqued our interest.  I tried a couple and made my decision (Pretty Things stout).

We relaxed, chatted with some locals, perused the menu (a small list of your usual bar food items), and had a pretty awesome time.  I will definitely be back in the future to try some more local craft brews and possibily some of that tasty sounding chili.

Being from Edgewood, I've been driving by What Cheer Tavern for a couple weeks now and was interested in what kind of drinking establishment was opening in the slightly changing narraganssett blvd section of Washington Park.  I went home did my research online and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was being marketed as a bar where the beer matters first and foremost.  I stopped by with my wife on early saturday night and walked into a Revival  brewing tasting event.  I enjoyed tasting's of their octoberfest and double black beers.  We grabbed a seat by the big picture window and ordered the Revival  drafts that came to our table nice and cold.  Now, I have never been to the previous establishment and was impressed with how the placed seemed.  Clean, great local list of brews, comfortable, and one  great motivated owner, John who greeted us like vip's.  After downing our first round, we asked for a menu which inludes good appetizers that pair well with beer, but kicked up slightly to separate from the norm.  We had bacon buffalo wings and wow! we were blown away at the freshness and flavor.  After a couple more rounds, we left our new neighborhood bar happy that such a place similar to the Avery, e & o tap, dougherty's east ave cafe, etc..was only a 5 minute ride home.

I left Rhode Island in the nineties but have visited often in the last few years to check on real estate I own in the area.  When I lived in RI it was devoid of any quality beer venues.  Fortunately, RI is catching up and some great breweries and beer bars have opened up recently.  One of them is What Cheer Tavern.  The Washington Park neighborhood is still a little rough around the edges but seems to be improving.  The bar staff is great and welcoming which resulted in a friendly vibe throughout the time I was there.  Not as many taps as I am used to but the beer on tap is fresh and local.  The Revival Double Black IPA currently on tap is awesome.   The food menu is perfect for the bar - just a few appetizers and a pulled pork sandwich special while I was there.  The wings are some of the best I've ever had mainly due to the quality of the chicken - fresh and locally sourced.  BEWARE:  wings hot and above are burning hot!!  I thoroughly enjoyed my time at What Cheer and look forward to visiting again when I am next in RI.

I'm really excited about this place. Great beer and a small selective menu of "totally decent food" and the Acores is finally gone! Hooray! I've gone in twice and both times have met some awesome people. Drinking craft beer doesn't need to be pretentious or expensive and I like that this place seems to foster that sentiment. With 8 taps, they seem to care more about quality than quantity. Revival, Trinity, Wachusett and the new UFO Pumpkin on tap. Good selection of bottled beers in the cooler. Beer reps bought me drinks both times I went in. I guess they will be doing tastings pretty regularly there so I'm into that too.
AND... the wings are amazing-- I don't know why I thought there would not be food here...maybe because the old Acores was just so weird, that I figured this would not be a place to get dinner. WRONG. The buffalo wings are huge, obviously not frozen and perfect sauce-to-wing ratio. My husband had the chili. It was good too. The chalk board lists their specials: $4 and $5 draft & bottle specials, $2 Gansett Tallboys on Thursdays and house-infused chili vodka for Bloody Mary's. The fenced backyard is great for good weather or smokers. I see potential for this to be a great spot in the Summer. I heard the owner talking about doing a karaoke night--ummm, YES.
So I obviously like this place and will be returning.

Having lived in Washington Park for ten years I've had to listen to my friends in other neighborhoods talk about walking over to The Avery, or down to the Wild Colonial, or even up to the Elmhurst Pub. Meanwhile, within walking distance of my house I had these options: McDonalds, Subway, and the Shell station.

Oh, there was also a really crappy bar called the Acores Cafe, which I went to all of one time before my wife decided she was never setting foot in there again. I guess people screaming at the top of their lungs in Portuguese is not the nicest setting for a date night.

Well, the Acores has been sold, and has reopened as What Cheer? Tavern, named after the famous greeting ("What Cheer, Netop") given to Roger Williams when he first came to Providence.

What Cheer is an intimate space that specializes in local food and beer. The menu is small, simple, and locally sourced. The current beers on tap are Providence favorites Revival and Trinity, along with Newport Storm, Wachussett, Grey Sail and of course, Narragansett. Bottled beers are also available and generally fall into the New England craft beer milieu.

Now, as nice as this sounds, it's still Washington Park so they do have $2 Narragansett Tallboys on Thursdays, and some domestic beer and cheap shot options as well.

What Cheer Tavern has only been open for a few days, but so far it's drawing an eclectic crowd. You have some of the old neighborhood guys that used to come to Acores, college students from Johnson & Wales, professionals stopping in for a bite or a drink after work, some military folks, and people attracted to the locavore and craft beer vibe. All they need now is some hipsters and they'll win some sort of Providence Bingo.

The space itself is cozy - probably holds 20 people comfortable with 30 being a tight fit. However, it has a really nice fenced in patio area that they plan to turn into a beer garden. Given the lack of outdoor seating at most bars and restaurants in Providence, I'm psyched to have such an amenity in my neighborhood.

The owner seems nice and friendly. We talked for a bit while I was enjoying my Gansetts, and I always appreciate a bartender who takes the time to talk to a lone patron rather than just texting or cleaning and waiting until you need a refill.

You can tell the place is still finding its feet. In some ways, I really like that. I like that it's not so busy that I can actually get to know the owner. I like that they draw an eclectic mix of people. I like that they're an unpretentious place serving craft beer and locally sourced food.

We saw that What Cheer was having their grand opening tonight and took a look at their website. Local Microbrews and good pub grub...so we had to check it out. We were pretty happy about what we found. This place used to be the Acores Cafe. My only experience with that place was calling the cops when I saw twenty people brawling in the streets outside the joint. What Cheer Tavern couldn't be further from that image. Great local beers on tap, friendly staff, kick ass blues cranking on the stereo, and several large HDTV's with football and soccer.

We got to talk to the new owner quite a bit tonight. His mission is to bring great local beer on tap in a small comfortable environment. I am very pleased to see a place like this in the North Edgewood/ Washington Park area. Give this place a shot and I am sure that you will not be disappointed. I look forward to going back! WHAT CHEET!?!
