I went on a Saturday afternoon, the owners were the only servers there -- so the service was on the slower end but still efficient. If you like to enjoy your glass of wine, the waiting time for your entree and apps will mean nothing to you.
The wine and lunch/dinner menu is pretty extensive; you'll have a lot to choose from. I definitely recommend the baked brie for an appetizer. Before or after you finish dining you can shop in the actual wine gallery located in the restaurant.
Also, if you check-in on yelp you'll receive 15% of an appetizer. The restaurant is very spacious and inviting. Try this place out!
Eclectic menu and a nice mix of wine flights, but the service leaves a fair amount to be desired. The Magenta flight was fantastic, and the fact that the entire wine menu was sorted in groups of three wine flights was well appreciated. Â However, spacing of tables and attention of the staff was well below par for a place that should pride themselves on the comfort of the guests.
Review Source:I went there this past Christmas. I am just going to get down to it, this is the food that I experienced:
1. Crab Dip- There may have been "some" crab in there, but it was more consistent of a cheese dip.
2. The Scottish Salmon Salad- The description said "field greens", I had a bowl full of iceberg (mainly the husky bottom part). The salmon, well, nothing too special.
3. Salmon Cakes- Burnt, totally burnt.
So, after all of this I had enough and asked to speak to the manager. When the manager came over, he offered me this gem, "Well, other people have ordered it and liked it." My response to him was, "They are burnt, my salad (which wasn't finished) was nothing like it was described". He then just stood there. He simply said nothing. Finally he asked me if I wanted anything else and I said no. He removed that item from my bill and I went to Jay's Seafood instead to enjoy a great dinner and a solid drink.
Also, if you don't want to drink wine, good luck with getting anything else. Also, the drinks may as well be shots. They are EXTREMELY small.
Another note: I have heard that they do not have a full kitchen, so you may want to check into that as well. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy.
Stopped here for some dinner and wine while in town for a concert downtown. We were not disappointed. I personally enjoyed the warehouse like atmosphere. The staff was very courteous and attentive and the menu had a great selection even for the vegetarian in our group. The veggie pizza was delicious. We decided to stop back after the concert even, and sat up at the bar. Brian was most helpful behind the bar in helping us decide between bottles to take home with us. I'd recommend the Wine Gallery to anyone staying in Downtown Dayton who is looking for a great glass, or bottle, of wine.
Review Source:Charming local gem! Â
This is my Thursday place! I love it. But, I only love it because of a few wonderful servers. Â Like many reviews say here: Â The service is VERY hit and miss, sometimes great, sometimes bordering on rude (it all depends on who you get). Â
The food is good to very good. The wine is wine. Â I like their pizzas but they have a tendency to change menu preparations and ingredients and not noting that on the menu so I recommend double checking. Â
Overall...it's a nice place to eat in downtown Dayton (really one of the only places) and a comfortable place to linger with a book. Â Great wine specials on Tues/Thurs and a lovely patio to boot. Â
I'm thankful that I live near it and that Melissa works there on Thursdays! Â It's really the people that make a place like this thrive. Â I wish the management saw this and made positive changes in this category.
Excellent wine selection and extensive menu -- especially impressed by the appetizers (try the baked brie with mango chutney). Â The entrees are a bit bland and leave something to be desired -- just "fine" food, but fine enough. Â I come here for the ambiance and relaxed atmosphere, not an exquisite dinner.
Review Source:Been frequenting The Wine Gallery since its opening back at The Cannery building and I can't say enough good things about it. I have never had a bad experience there and in fact have had several life changing events happen there including meeting my future husband! There are several wonderful events held throughout the year there too that I fully suggest people take advantage of including the yearly anniversary tasting that often includes a tapas buffet and the brand new 4th of July event.
We had no 4th plans and so at the last minute got a reservation for the event. Money well spent. No need to fight the crowds along the river to see the fireworks, the whole show could be seen from a fantastic viewpoint on their second floor where a huge variety of food & wine was set up to indulge in as well as live music. The upstairs is segmented into different rooms and all angles seemed to have great views of the fireworks. It can be a little painful to go up & down the winding stairs to get to the restroom more than a couple of times but overall fantastic!
I'm not sure Ive ever had a bad experience at this wine gallery. It is very interesting to hear some of the complaints about the wine gallery. Overall the decorum is very nice and they have a great selection of imported beers and wines. The food is pretty good yet a bit pricey, but it keeps the rift raft out I think. The one thing that is confusing with this place is that the wine for sale is not organized in any way. It is very hard to find what you are looking for at the new location. I have read the other reviews and it seems that this place just need to be your cup of tea. With so many dance clubs and dive bars in Dayton I think that some of the people who did not like this place will be able to take their business to a location that is better suited to their credentials.
Review Source:Excellent affordable wine choices. Â The food mostly is appetizers, sandwiches, and pizzas. Â The olives were o.k. but the pizzas were excellent. Â Nice atmosphere and excellent parking. Â A great place for hard-to-find ales and beers. Â Service was great but I never asked any detailed questions about the wine. Â Brian the owner was always at hand to discuss wine choices. Â They have some comfortable sofas just to hang out with friends and enjoy the wine. Â A very relaxed scene.
Review Source:First of all, the website was not updated with the new address (5 W. Monument) so I went to the old address and proceeded to get lost in an attempt to find it. Â It's been at the new location for a month now. Â Then I get there finally, and I sit there with my group for a half an hour before giving up on having a server take my order. Â So someone goes to the bar to get it. Â Fine. Â I never even attempted to order another one because I never saw the waitress again. Â The service was extremely poor for everyone in my group, to the point where we were very unhappy. Â Granted, it was $2 a glass Thursday night, so I already expected not as great service since it was pretty crowded. Â But not only was it slow, it was rude and obnoxious. Â I will not be going back just because of this terrible experience, but the $2 a glass deal is great and the atmosphere is nice if you want to give it your own shot.
Review Source:Went here after enjoying the Wine Gallery in theil old location. Â Had high expectations, but will never go back.
1. Â Old place was homey and warm. Â This location is like a warehouse. Â It is larger, and they do have a more expansive food menu, but the couches are crammed in at the front, and the if there is a group of people near the large tables (as there was for our visit), you get crushed in like a waiting room.
2. Â Staff: Â The hostess was very friendly and courteous. Â However, that was the end of it. Â We made our way to the bar, sat down, and not one, not two, but three separate servers went by without so much as even a "Hi, be with you in a minute." Â They were two feet away and did not acknowledge out presence. Â
Next, as were were looking at the menus, the woman closest to us finally asked if we wanted some water. Â I said "Yes, and maybe a recommendation for a red wine." Â Now you would think in a wine bar they would give a recommendation, but NO! Â Her response was "What, can't make up your mind?" and walked off to help someone else.
The wine menu is set up under headings such as "Magenta" and "Artists Palette" rather than the traditional Merlot, Cab, etc. Â When my wife politely commented that it was confusing, the same waitress literally said "Huh" and again walked off.
We liked the old location. Â We came to the new location to see if there was enough room to hold a retirement reception there and enjoy a light meal and some good wine. Â We were disappointed with the staff, and the setting. Â If this is the "new" Wine Gallery, I doubt they will be in business for long.
Loved this place. It was not as snotty as I am when it comes to wine (OK I admit I am a wine jerk - you are too!) but I have to say that after being stuck in an airport this place made my introduction to Dayton well worth it.
The staff are nice and down to earth. Not always true of a "wine bar". They have Tuesday and Thursday $2 wine nights and 25% off appetisers so we had a nice Spanish wine (or two or three) and some great snacks. Now, could it have been better, yes, but I was happy as hell to drink some solid wine, have some snacks, and chill out at this place in an old warehouse space.
Now, the owners told me that they are moving to a place downtown near the river so I think things will move, but hopefully not change.
We started coming to Wine Gallery in November of 2007. It's a good week if we get to make a visit there. We learned from an early point in time, to receive the best service, sit at the bar. So that is what we do. The owner and the wait staff are very friendly. The owner is quite knowledgeable about the wines, the waitstaff--not so much.
The wines are listed by color, then subdivided into categories. There are 3 wines in each category, and even if you want to order a glass of  the 2007  3 Girls Cabernet, you make life easier on yourself by looking at the location on the menu and saying "I'd like a 6 ounce pour of CP-2." Proper wine etiquette? No--but that's how you get what you want efficiently at Wine Gallery (as this is the way the waitresses write it down their orders to turn into the bar. Honestly, this place has quite the following. Most nights, we HAVE to sit at the bar, as there isn't a single table open. They used to have live music on Saturday nights until they realized that they were packing people in without having to pay a musician, so there is no longer live music, just background music piped in.
Looking for a bargain? Stop in on Tuesday's for $2 Tuesays. There are several wines offered by the glass--just $2. Same goes for a number of specialty beers. The food is very tasty, and the chocolate brownie drizzled in chocolate sauce topped with whipped cream is a great accompaniment to a full-bodied red.
If you are looking for a quick, get you in and out experience, you probably won't find it here. But once you get a feel for things, it may be a place you want to return to again and again.
I'm probably too uncultured to properly review this place, but whatever. Â I thought it was a great place to chill with old friends and just catch up on life. Â We ordered a flight each (Pastel flight - so tasty), see photos. Â And 7.25$ for a flight? Â How can you go wrong?
I'm pretty sure there was a live band when we went. Â They had tables as well as couches; the three of us squeezed into a 2.5 person couch, so it was definitely cozy.
I think after having lived on the east coast and west coast (~ an hour from Napa), I didn't have very high expectations of a wine cafe in Dayton, so I thought this place was pretty nice, given what I had expected. Â I had a good time drinking good wine with good friends, I don't see how that could get any less than 4 stars.
I have to agree to a lesser extent that there are service issues, but mine are predominantly associated with the apparent lack of training the servers have received in regards to the wine. Â You basically have to show them the wine on the menu as they will usually not know which wine you are ordering unless they see it. Â The food is not bad and they do have a nice selection of very reasonably priced wines. Â They also have a small carry out/shop where you can stop by and pick up a bottle on the way home from work. Â The owners are friendly, and I think once the staff are up to snuff things will work out.
Review Source:The Wine Gallery has a wonderful selection of wine, along with similar flights of 3 wines for reasonable prices. Â They also serve appetizers and a small dinner menu.
This is all great on paper, but execution is really, really poor. Â The service is quite possibly the worst I have ever experienced. Â I tried this establishment when they opened in end of 2006, and wrote off poor service to their opening. Â I tried again in January of 2007, again poor service. Â They made some changes (apparently), and I recently revisited in April of 2007. Â This last time was even worse!
Slow, unresponsive and sometimes non-existent wait staff combined with an owner that seemingly does not care about this problem has made my most recent trip the last ever.
