I had a voucher. Â The employee cheated me out of the full value of the voucher and charged me for extra fries instead of including it int the voucher. Â The BBQ wings were just wings that were not crispy fried soaking in a bath of sauce. Â They were not appetizing at all. Â I called several times for the manager or owner who never returned by calls and for some reason there were never a manager there when I called. Â How convenient. Â Definitely a disappointment and not worth driving to. Â Never again. Â
Also, the place looks like crap.
Officially and currently my favorite wing place in Chicago. Â Why? Â This is the only place I know that gives you the option, for an inexpensive extra cost of course, for Grilled Wings.
I traveled 2 hours to this place the first time and I never regretted the day. Â I love these guys and their wings. Â Granted this place is in the "Hood" but they are so worth it.
I actually have a list of favorites and personally recommend them:
1. Strawberry BBQ (Not in the menu but you can ask them)
2. Spicy Buffalo
3. Jerk BBQ
The owner Beng is genuinely a very nice guy and makes you feel very welcome at his place of business.
I get excited seeing this guys at the Annual Chicago Wingfest. Â I'm looking forward to going back to this place soon for some yummy, yummy wings. Â Yep.
The wings are spectacular, good business. And I've only tried like four flavors, which there is an actual plethora from which to choose. After five attempts, all from me changing my order, they were quickly served. Cool. Good business.
The only thing that halted that last star was the not enough fries. Even though I ordered 50 wings, the combo only added one soda and one fry, so I let that lay.
The wings are always fresh, hot, and oh so tasty! Â My fav is sweet honey jerk but the jerk honey is more spicy. Â There are over 54 flavor to choose from. Â Each order is made to order. Â So if u r in a hurry this not for you. Â No precooked anything! Â This is a must! Â They could work on the ambience of the place. Â It has so much potential.
Review Source:Oh, it's worth it. As a buffalo wing lover I'm always on the hunt for the mythical "best wings". I still miss my "hot wing" days from Atlanta as there was some good wing eating in the ATL. My hometown could never really compete with the ATL buffalo wings though I have been satisfied by places like Hooters, Buffalo Wild Wings and Wing Stop.
Now enter Wings Around the World. This place makes some really good wings and at .50 a wing (when bought in enough quantity) the price to taste ratio may be unmatched. The Honey Lemon Pepper are a must have and that Cheesy Buffalo is also some tasty goodness (though messy).
If you're a wing lover, give 'em a try.
This place is pretty no thrills. Good wings and plenty of flavors to choose from. We tried the Cheesy Buffalo, Montreal Madness, Garlic Parmesan, Kamikaze, and Fire Jerk.
I think the other reviewers were spot-on with their reviews of the mentioned flavors. Our favorites were the Cheesy Buffalo and Montreal Madness. The Fire Jerk was missing the fire and was very herbaceous. The Garlic Parmesan was pretty tasty. I really enjoyed the cheesy garlic crumbs. The Kamikaze, although it packed a decent amount of heat, really lacked taste.
The Fried Cheese Wedges are pretty good but nothing spectacular. I've had better versions elsewhere.
It's kinds of a haul to get there since we're Northsiders but it was definitely worth the travel. Wish we wouldn't have gotten stuck in traffic because I'm sure our wings would have been more crisp. At least the wings stayed nice and hot.
My friends and I bought Groupons here, and when we called ahead to place the order she was VERY nice and accommodating. I believe we had to place several orders to be able to use our Groupons and she was very patient. Â By the time we drove over to pick it up (around a half hour or so) the wings were ready.
We decided to go with side orders of the cheese wedges...DELICIOUS! Â I can't remember all the flavors of wings we got, but I remember liking them all. Â I think my particular favorite was the Garlic Parmesan. Â I love garlic though...and could eat it by itself so I might be slightly biased. Â The Masala, Jamaican jerk, and lemon pepper ranch were good as well.
Last Friday, we elected to use our groupon at Wings Around the World. Â Ordering over the phone was quite an easy process. Â Twenty minutes later, we arrived to pick up our order: Â Pineapple Jerk, Garlic Parmesan, Curry, Honey Teriyaki, and standard Buffalo Wings. Â We also ordered the combo w/ a side of cheese wedges and fries. Â Even though they told us 20 minutes over the phone, we waited an additional 25 minutes for our order. Â
The wings themselves were very good. Â In terms of flavors, our favorites were the Garlic Parmesan, Honey Teriyaki, and Buffalo (although we would get spicy buffalo next time). Â We would not get the Curry and Pineapple Jerk again. Â The cheese wedge was good (fried mac and cheese), if not a little strange. Â My favorite was the fries. Â I don't know about anyone else, but I love slightly soggy skinny fries. Â I hadn't had any of these since Zambia (yes, I had shoestring fries in Africa), and they were very good.
Look forward to trying other wings at Wings Around the World.
Went here last nite to order 30 wings with intentions of ordering 4 flavors... The woman at the counter only let me order 3. So I ordered Sweet and spicy plum, Honey lemon pepper and mango jerk...and an order of the mac and cheese puffs whatever the heck they're called.
I sat down and waited about 20 minutes and I noticed everyone was ordering the cheesy buffalo which would of probably been better than mango jerk because that was the only flavor I disliked.I absolutely loved the honey lemon pepper!! Â The sweet and spicy plum was good.. the order was huge and is enough for 3-4 people, the chicken wing itself was plump and tender... and the best part it only costed $18 bucks..
Very curious to try the cheesy buffalo and strawberry BBQ which AGAIN a few people ordered while I waited for my food. Also the deep fried mac and cheese is very rich and cheesy and seems like your heart will stop at any moment after biting into it but they are so yummy..
I'm giving it 4 stars because they messed up my order even though it resulted in 10 free wings but mainly bc the customers that ordered after me got to choose more flavors with a smaller order than mine. WTF? I would of threw in that one extra star had I got my 4 flavors.. but hey 2 Â great flavors out of 3 for a first timer is not so bad. And I will definately be coming back!!
Ps.. h*ly sh*t I just noticed how many times I wrote "order" in this review?!
I know, horrible writing but its useful info my friends.. Lol..
I'll start with the negative...the restaurant itself is very seedy and could use a complete makeover. I visited WATW for the first time on Wednesday, thanks to my Groupon. When I first pulled up and saw how dilapidated and old the place looked I almost kept going. But I was starving and I had my Groupon so I said "why not?" When I got inside, the aroma of chicken hit me like a left hook. It smelled really good in there. There was one person ahead of me in line, and she was using her Groupon too. She wasn't sure what she wanted, but the guy at the counter was very patient and offered her suggestions. When I got to the counter and told him I had a Groupon too, for some reason I expected him to have an attitude. But he didn't. He was very nice and answered all my questions.
Once I ordered and sat down, 4 more people came in with Groupons. I LOL'ed each time someone else came in there with a Groupon. But the guy never batted an eye and was very nice to everyone. I wanted about 20 minutes for food, all the while smelling the food in the restaurant. I hadn't eaten all day and my stomach was in my back, so I was ready to go home and eat. Once my food was ready, he gave me sneak peak of it, and offered recommendations of the sauces I should try next time.
Now onto the food. I order 12 shrimp and 5 wings. The shrimp were HUMONGOUS! OMG! They were massive. I got the buffalo sauce and the mango jerk on the shrimp and was very pleased. They both had good flavor. I got the pineapple jerk on the wings, but since I don't eat chicken, I couldn't personally tell you how they were, but my boyfriend MURDERED those wings. He was trying to eat the bone! He loved the shrimp as well and I had to keep giving him the side eye for trying to take my shrimp. But they were so big I was only able to eat 4 of the 12.
I will definitely try them again and get some different sauces. I really wish they would remodel, but if they food is good, I won't complain too much.
There isn't a better place the epitomizes hole in the wall, as the restaurant consists of a "hole in the wall" to place orders and pick up food from and chairs lining the sides of the walls for you to wait for your food. Â With that said, I have no complaints, as the low overhead keeps the prices really low. Â 30 sizable wings, large fries, and a soda was only $21 after tax. Â More than enough food for two people.
I found the wings to be juicy and well seasoned - I ordered the buffalo, Jamaican jerk, and the garlic parm. Â All were delicious. Â I normally don't like buffalo sauce as much as the other flavors, but the buffalo here was great. Â Although it might not be the safest place to get wings at night, this is a place worth taking a trip to the South side for.
I counted 9 countries and 43 wing flavorings offered here. Â I picked up 20 fried wings for $12.99. Â 10 were American lemon pepper, and 10 were Jamaican mango jerk. Â The mango jerk tasted pretty close to the lemon pepper, but with a sweet and not very mango flavored adder. Â Both servings were nonetheless tasty and satisfying. Â The wings and drumsticks were also good sized and plump. Â I'll probably go with 30 wings for $15.99 next time, and there will indeed be a next time!
The store is quite spartan, with just a couple of worn bench seats. Â Your order your wings, and it takes about 15 minutes if no one is ahead of you. Â Just a note - the internet menu may say they have grilled wings, but they only do fried I was told.
A good stop, and a lot of choices. Â There was easy and close street parking out front on 75th street. Â They're also open til 5am (apparently a night club is next door), so any wings craving you may have can be satisfied almost anytime!
1? I know, right? It's like, whoa. But, listen to my sad sad tale. It all makes sense...
So, I'd been planning on coming here for months! Months! I'd told people about it. I'd written about it. I'd supported it. So, finally, the time had come for me to experience these heavenly wings. I'd stalked the website. I'd talked to friends. I had my order in mind and my plan was sound. I hopped in my car, fought torrential downpours and interstate traffic and, 50 minutes later, I was here. Wings Around The World! Yes! Hold up. What's this?
As I pulled up, I was greeted by a sullen-looking malcontent, leaned up against the building and smoking a cigarette. He mean-mugged me as I parallel parked and mean-mugged even harder as I got out of the car. No stranger to mean-mugging (I have the merit badge), I exchanged the neighborhood greeting with him and made my way to the door. As I get closer to the door, he rolls his eyes, throws the butt on the sidewalk... and walks in in front of me! As I go to the counter, he goes BEHIND IT to start preparing food.
Oh.HELL.NO! I am under no illusion that nasty isht happens in kitchens all the time. Don't show me. Done. Done! I drove way too long and under too many annoying conditions to come here for 'smoked' wings. It's a shame. The young lady behind the counter/front of the house was quite lovely, polite & gracious. I am sorry that I had an unfortunate run-in with the cook before meeting her and that he stayed in full view of me as I contemplated (even after all that) ordering some food.
75th Street and I need to take a break.
After reading most of the good reviews about this place I decided to try it out. The atmosphere is lacking but its a pick up and go type place so not a big deal. I tried the Buffalo, cheesy buffalo and teriyaki. All the wings were fried to perfection the sauces were a little 'meh'. The buffalo sauce was good, which was the main one i craved. The teriyaki was ok but not the best. The cheesy buffalo was HORRIBLE!!!! I repeat...do not waste you sauce selections on CHEESY BUFFALO!!! Ok the easiest way to describe it is buffalo flavored wings sprinkled with some type of popcorn cheese. NO DICE!!! Its kinda a hit and miss with the various sauces. So for the most part
the service was quick and the place was clean, i will probably go back again.
So if you were dreaming about Jules Verne's books when you were a teeny boy/girl, you can now make your dream come true and become one of his heroes.
Only better.
Phineas Fogg went around the world in 80 days. Pffff!!! What a wimp!!
What about kicking his ass big time and do it in 34 days?!?!?!? Sounds exciing enough?
Thought so...
Actually you can do even better than that if you live with a Harold's aficionado, a king in the realm of fried, el rey del pollo - Reuben H. (and his trio of equally addicted beasts)
Because WATW understands this kind of dependence and allows you to mix different flavors in one order.
Isn't it just too sweet?!?!?
And speaking of sweet, the sweet and spicy plum - labeled 'Chinese' - is quite tasty if you want to know. So is one of the jerks (fire? BBQ? not sure....yeah, I know, BAD JOB) and the cheesy buffalo.
It really looks like a big mess, will probably leave a trail of grease all along your digestive track but damn..........
I LOVED IT.
When asked at the time of ordering how many little pieces of bird I would eat I sheepishly said 2.
I devoured 6, and still - I could have eaten many more.
THAT GOOD.
No, really.
Worth braving 75th street. Which is not that bad by the way. Don't be timorous and live up to your Yelper's name, ready to risk everything in the name of food.
There is - of course - plenty of parking around, but nowhere to eat your little treasures. Take out only - be patient, you'll have to wait a bit - no coffee house around to take in your take out . This is not Wicker Park kids. Probably pricier than your average wings too (about $10 for 15) Eat in the car or if you are civilized enough, drive somewhere (maybe home) to savor the World.
It's all worth it.
Wayyyyy better than Wings Around the World and the ever growing franchise, Buffalo Wild Wings. These wings are huge, and they have a ton of flavors giving Buffalo Wild Wings a run for their money
Favorites here are the Maple wings and the Garlic Lemon Pepper Wings. Â Let me just say, you will not find other wings in the Chicagoland area, such as the Maple Wings. Â They are under the Canada section of wings, as their wings selections are divided by countries. Â The title may scream SWEET, but they aren't at all. Â They have a distinct taste, a little hard to describe, but I'll try!!! Â They are sweet and have an TINY bit of a underlying taste of mild curry? Â Did I hit it on the head? Garlic Lemon Pepper wings are pretty classic. They have a right amount of ingredients, but kicked up a notch
Best wings in the city! Â They have wings for every palette, at an affordable price
Rejoice, Yelpdom!
After numerous aborted missions, roads fraught with peril, I finally reached the apex of the wing kingdom: the quest for the Holy Grail of chicken wings has concluded. Reality matched the myth, legend, and hyperbole and I give my fellow Yelpers Andre W. and Tina B the maddest props for their highest recommendations that rang true across the land all the way to my Albany Park residence summoning me down to 75th and King Drive!
Having been a fried chicken fan all of my life, I've had the privilege to go to college in a fried chicken hotbed: Baltimore. There, names like Tyrone's, Lake Trout, and Kennedy Fried Chicken dot the landscape and MEAN something. Having heard and read and obsessed about the Wings Around the World menu, I felt like a professional archaeologist Googling up the menu, pictures, and reviews rendering myself ready to dig into these godly wings.
What is Wings Around the World about? In a nutshell: 9 countries, 34 flavors, this place has more flavors of wings than Baskin Robbins has of ice cream. Today I had the honor to march into Wings Around the World and it didn't seem appropriate to order a pedestrian number of wings to consume, so I didn't just double down on my normal order of wings, I tripled down and ordered 30 wings!
Thirty wings?! That's right, $15.99 later and I got myself a helping of Sweet Ginger BBQ, Honey Teriyaki, and Cheesy Buffalo. Reuben H and Aurore L got themselves Sweet Plum, Jamaican Jerk, and Cheesy Buffalo. We waited in the foyer and spent time reading the various news articles heightening the anticipation for these wings! The wings came out and off we went to Hyde Park to chow down on our incredible find.
It was at the University of Chicago in the Reynolds Club at Hutchinson Commons that the Holy Grail of chicken wings was unveiled! After waiting so long and having gone so far with many aborted attempts to make this trip, the moment was finally here. The first item off the bucket list could finally be crossed off and I would indeed be tasting the best chicken wings Chicago had to offer. Andre didn't lie, the Sweet Ginger BBQ wings were otherworldly and I went sent shaking my head and was held speechless from the deliciousness of it all. Blindness could have struck and I wouldn't have known the difference so powerful was the taste and sensation of these thoroughbred chicken wings.
The Sweet Ginger BBQ threw combinations of flavor on my tongue faster than Manny Pacquiao's fists can blast through punching bags! I found the Honey Teriyaki to be a bit dry and underwhelming, but the buttery richness of the Cheesy Buffalo restored my faith. Just looking at the Cheesy Buffalo, it was clear that this would be completely unhealthy, but you have to live once in awhile and today was a day to live.
This food was so delicious and the chicken was still crisp, and I didn't feel one bit ashamed that I had a giant foil tin of thirty chicken wings in front of me while other people in the Commons were studying or playing chess in near silence! I couldn't tell you what ingredients they put in the wings and I frankly don't care - Wings Around the World wings are a miracle of the food world and justified the long arduous journey as it was love at first bite. Once you have a taste of the Holy Grail of chicken from Wings Around the World, you'll never see chicken wings the same way again. You might even turn into me, chowing down on cartilage because these wings are good to the last chomp!!!
Thanks be to Wings Around the World.
Amen.
We heard about this place on Yelp and decided we should definitely check it out. I mean wings with an international twist. How could we pass that up?
One of my wing rules is that I don't pay more than $1 per wing from anywhere. WATW allowed me to stick to my word and get a side of crispy, thin, delicious, seasoned fries and a drink all for about $15 and we got 20 WINGS!
You can get a new flavor after every 5 wings. Naturally, we tried 4 different flavors: Jerk Mango, Sweet & Spicy Plum, Jalapeno, and Bourbon. The Bourbon started out tasting like its namesake, but eventually tasted like Maple Syrup which was not a problem for me since I'm a sweets fiend. My favorite of the 4 was the Sweet & Spicy Plum which I dipped the crunchy fries into.
This place lacks ambience. Hence only 4 stars. The black painted walls just weren't doing it for me, neither was the industrial fan kind of hanging out in the shop front. But the sweet, patient cashier and the prompt arrival of good wings totally made up for it. We're already making plans to go back and try the rest of their flavors!
So this is my 200th review and the honor goes to Wings Around the World, a well-deserving selection.
By the time I got my stash of wings home I couldn't remember what I had ordered - as of January 2010, there are fifty choices! I just wanted to get my wings home and start devouring. Did I make some great choices or is everything on the menu exceptionally tasty? I got something garlicky and it had plenty of bits of garlic. Was that the Greek lemon garlic? I got something spicy and it had plenty of sauce. I got something barbequey and the flavors were exceptional. I do remember they were out of the curry selections that day but that was no problem because I'll pick some up the next time I'm here.
Bottom line: Nice-sized wings with incredible sauces cooked onto them. The best wings I've ever had. Allow about 15-20 minutes for food prep. Carry out only.
Being a wing eating MF, it was only natural that I check this place out and this Saturday I finally got the opportunity.
I walked in thinking I would sit down and eat, but I noticed there were no tables around and there was just some waiting couches. On the wall you can see they have 9 different countries represented here and they have almost 50 different flavors. It took awhile to realize what I wanted (a shortage of workers and one person being in front of me helped buy some time). I decided to go with 5 Sweet Ginger BBQ repped by China and 5 of the the Honey Jerk represented by Jamaica. I also went with the fries which was thin cut and delicious. After I ordered my food I was told it would be a 20-25 minute wait by the cutie working the register
I sat there watching people come in picking up huge pans for various parties they were having causing my mouth to water more and more. They have different combo packages to choose from such as 1000 wings for $450 or 100 wings for $50 (Well worth it by the way). My order was ready in about 10-15 minutes and I grabbed my bag and ran to my car. I drove home like a madman and luckily ran into no traffic on 90/94 (strange for a saturday evening). The more I drove the more the smell started to penetrate my nose. Living in Wicker Park, parking can be ridiculous in the evening and luckily I ran into someone moving their car just a few doors down from my apt. I ran inside with the quickness!
I sat down and busted open the bag which had wing juice all over the place. One bite into the Sweet Ginger BBQ changed my life! The sauce was very rich and packed with flavor. The Honey Jerk was out of this world as well. I think it is safe to say I had the best wings of my life. I definitely have to get back over here to try more flavors. I Â recommend this place to wing lovers everywhere.
I came back and tried the Strawberry BBQ, which is not on the menu and it blew me away! Â The Canadian Maple twist is great...you can taste the maple syrup. The Honey Mustard is out of sight as well. Everyone get over there! Seriously!!!!
My roommate and I made the trek out here yesterday evening - definitely worth the trip! Â We ordered 50 wings between the 2 of us - we noticed that each order of wings comes with a different number of flavor choices; Â A 50 wing order, you can choose 5 flavors. Â However, a 20 wing order, you can choose 4. Â So we got 2-20's and a 10, for a total of 10 flavor choices. Â Strange scheme, and you pay more if you want more flavors - wish this wasn't the case, but oh well!
We got: Cheesy Buffalo, Fire Jerk, Cheesy Jalapeno, Bourbon, Maple, Spicy Ranch, Parmesan Garlic, Masala, Sweet Ginger BBQ, and Ginger Sesame.
Most flavors were very tasty, the 'worst' were well above average... but our unanimous favorites were Bourbon and Maple. Â Fantastic! Â I have a new love for the 'sweet' wing sauce... just so tasty. Â Gave me the idea to baste my Thanksgiving turkey with a Maple/Bourbon glaze ... will report back if it is good!
The point: Â This place is great if you love wings, so give it a try.
Wings Around the World is an oasis for crispy, flavorful, without a doubt done right wings.
I have yet to come across a flavor I haven't liked. My top 5 would be parm jalepeno, teriyaki jerk, lemon pepper, mango jerk and sweet garlic. The worst part about this place is narrowing my order to only a couple flavors- I want them all!!! All it takes is a bit of strategery and you can have one of the best meals available in the city. The wings and fries are best eaten immediately in the convenience of your car (although admittedly it does take days for the smell of the wingy deliciousness to leave your car...). The cheese wedges are also very good but I hesitate recommending them because they tend to run out and I am selfish...
I suggest placing your order in advance as it does take a while for perfection.
Like my fellow yelpers have already said, get in the car and start driving, you won't regret it.
This is absolutely my favorite wing place! So many new and exotic wing sauces. I have yet to try all of them but my favorite thus far is spicy plum. The owner is very nice and so is his staff. I recommend this place to anyone that is adventurous with food and loves wings! This wing joint is far from my house but it is sooo good that the trip doesn't stop me from going back for more!
I recommend calling in your order ahead of time and keeping a menu on hand. DON'T DEBATE ON TRYING THIS PLACE...JUST GO!
Just the other day I was looking around yelp for some yelp places. Then I came upon the page for "Wings Around The World". I was like hmmm, I never even heard of it. But I saw how close it was and really wanted to try it.
So today I dragged a buddy to go with me. I called in the order ahead of time as suggested by other reviews. A very nice girl took my order and told me it would be about 15 minutes.
So I got there and saw a bunch of people in there, so I decided to wait in the car for a few more minutes. When I went back in, I was greeted by a very nice girl, and she told me my order would be just a few minutes. I ordered 30 wings and the total was only $17 and some change. I was like wowww really??? I thought that was a badass price.
The girl noticed that I have never been there before, when my order was ready she showed it to me and asked if I would like to try one first. But I said i'll just wait til I get home. She told me I'll be back for sure. And she is right, I will definitely be back many times.
So I went to my parents house to let them try some, and then I grabbed a foldup chair and ate outside with my friend. The wings were delicious, it was not dry as hell or watery as shiet like some other places. It was made just the right way with great crispyness and just wet enough where its not too dry. The flavors were great, and not too salty nor sweet. The flavors I chose were "terriyaki, maple twist, and bbq". The terriyaki was definitely my favorite. The wings were pretty big too with plenty of meat. I was enjoying it so much that I bit down on a piece of bone and chipped my front tooth ;[. Â But I'd still go back for more even if it means I'll chip every single tooth, lol jk.
Definitely give this place a try if you haven't already.
Probably my favorite wings in the entire city.
I love the combination of frying then charring on the grill.
There are so many flavors now, its getting a little out of hand. I almost wish they would scale back the menu to make the options a little more manageable, but this is AMERICA, god dammit....
I would recommend sticking with some of the stalwart flavors and maybe trying a single new flavor. Look for the flavors that have clearly been on display the longest. They are tried and true. The newer flavors are more hit and miss, although you can still find a gem from time to time.
And hell, even a "miss" at this place is better than most places could dream of making chicken wings.
I had a wing craving a few weeks ago. Â However, I wanted something outside of the normal buffalo and bbq wings. Â Buffalo Wild Wings came to mind but then I remembered Wings Around the World. Â After a google search, I found the new details and scribbled them down. Â
I called ahead to place my order. Â I recommend doing this because even though my order was for 10 wings, Â I was told that it would be ready within 15 - 20 minutes. Â It worked out nicely because it took me 20 minutes to arrive (due to distance and traffic).
I had the Canadian Maple Twist and Cosmic Curry. Â They were equally good; sweet vs spicy.
It was my first trip here but I will definitely return the next time my craving occurs.
Wings just right--fried hard & crispy, with plenty of sauce. Â And you'll definitely find a sauce that suits you among the 50+ flavors. Â As chicken joints go, it's probably the cheeriest, friendliest place I've ever been to (it even seemed clean!), and the person taking your order will offer to explain how they do things right off the bat. Â
I know this will probably fall on deaf ears, but don't order the Kamikaze wings. Â They taste alright, but not half as good as most of their flavors, and they turn your whole meal into a writhing mess of pain. Â Let me be clear too--I love spicy food, and I like it real spicy. Â I've lived in Mexico & Korea (and spent some good time in Jamaica), and I always go for the spiciest food around in the largest quantity I can find. Â But this was just painful, not enjoyable. Â Granted, the rest of their spicy flavors are not spicy enough (although the fire jerk is delicious in its own non-spicy way). Â But take this piece of advice--you have to order your wings by 5 per flavor, and you're not going to want to eat 5 of these Kamikazes.
Only one downside, and that's the price. Â 20 wings = $14-15. Â That's about 75 cents per wing, and that doesn't square with the competition. Â But the flavors are fun, and it's a great place to order for parties. Â If I remember right, it's 50 wings for $35?
Lastly, order the fried cheese wedges, they're d'lish (and actually stuffed with mac & cheese).
On my way to pick up a carryout order, I saw people standing at the street corner and walk into the street as if they are about to walk in front of you, but pull back last second. Â It's not in the best of neighborhoods, so drive with caution, peoples, no matter how tempting it is to play the real life version of Frogger.
+ Good selection. Â Aside from the flavors on Menu Pages, others posted on a sheet of paper at the counter include Ranch, Spicy Ranch, Hawaiian BBQ, General Tso's, Apricot Chipotle, Parmesan Glazed, Parmesan Jalapeno, Sweet Garlic, Jerk Teriyaki, Cheesy Buffalo, and Honey Mustard.
- One of my choices included the Kamikaze which doesn't kick in until you're eating the next wing, whatever flavor it is. To answer the "burning" question you're probably wondering, my eating companion and I experienced "fire in the hole" the next day. I only ate two of them. For those looking for their website, I think it's http://fireintheholewing…
- One flush was not enough. Â I also used the end of a burnt match as a scraper since water pressure alone was not enough.
I've been to this location twice so far, and both times the wings have been excellent. (Update: Three times now!) Â I'm tempted to give this place a five-star rating, but I'm dropping one for a couple of reasons.
First, it takes ages to get your wings. Â I strongly suggest doing what I did today, and entering that phone number up there into my phone so that I could call in and place my order for pickup, do some light shopping, and in 15-20 minutes, they'll call and let me know my wings are ready for pickup. Â It made the whole process go much more smoothly and I didn't have to sit in their bland waiting area all that time.
Second, while the flavors of the wings are EXCELLENT and numerous - its transference to the wings is not a constant delight. Â I'm basing this on the fact that both times I went, I got the General Tso's wings (not on the regular menu because it's a new flavor) and the first time, they were lovely and glazed with sauce that was a textural delight to compliment the delicious flavor. Â This time, the flavor was still there, but to a lesser extent because the sauce must have been thinner and didn't cling to the wings enough, leaving them almost dry on the outside by the time they hit my mouth.
That in mind, aside from the luck-of-the-draw regarding the flavor making its way to the wings and staying there, the flavors ARE excellent. Â Here's a rundown of the wings I've had so far (and my own personal out-of-5 star rating):
General Tso's (not on the regular menu): 5 of 5, but I love General Tso's chicken so if you love it as well, you'll love these wings.
Kamikaze (Japan): 3 of 5, because the chicken was great, but these wings pack a METRIC TON of heat. Â Not necessarily flavor or taste, but HEAT. Â I'd rather my mouth burn for a reason than just for the heck of it due to heat alone.
Teriyaki (Japan): 5 of 5, these wings had a lovely teriyaki glaze that tasted much better than any bottled teriyaki flavoring I've ever had, and they had a nice glazed coating of it.
Cheesy Buffalo (not on the regular menu): 5 of 5, these new recipe wings will probably fit on the American menu with the other buffaloes. Â There was indeed a hint of cheesiness, which worked well with the buffalo flavor.
Jerk Honey BBQ (Jamaica): 4 of 5, since the sauce technically delivered all of the flavors it promised, but it was just so busy with all three of these things that they just didn't harmonize well. Â Still rather tasty, but left me feeling similar to watching a movie that had been highly anticipated and hyped and then you leave afterwards wishing they'd spent more film on action and explosions and less time on the guy-gets-the-girl romantic-comedy nonsense subplot.
Maple Twist (Canada): 4 of 5, when I asked the attendant what the different between Maple and Maple Twist, she told me that the Maple Twist was sweeter. Â I think they add honey to it or something, so I went with that one - wanting a different experience than my Kamikaze trip. Â To be fair, the sauce tasted GREAT. Â The only problem was that the only way to find that out was to dip my finger in the watery puddle underneath my wings. Â I don't know if this is how the sauce typically is, or if I got a bad luck-of-the-draw batch after the sauce got watered down or something because they were running low. Â I won't knock it to a 3, which is what they technically were, because I believe in these wings, and maybe if they learn to live up to their viscous potential, they might make it to 5 someday.
Parma Garlic (Greece): 3 of 5, there was definitely parmesan cheese on my wings, but it overpowered any chance of tasting much of the garlic. Â Also, I've learned that the wings based on a rub (like this one, rather than a sauce or glaze) tend to come out looking and tasting a little burnt and dry. Â I liked the parmesan taste, though.
Bourbon (USA): 4 of 5, the sauce was great and the wings were still moist and not sitting in a little puddle of tasty sauce, meaning it was thick and held on. Â The bourbon taste wasn't all that strong, making them taste a little generic compared to some of the other wings with stronger flavors. Â Interesting glaze, though, and delicious wings nonetheless!
I hope to add to this list of flavors (by eating lots more wings), and I hope my insane review-ish rantings will assist you in choosing this eatery and what to eat when you get there. Â Just seriously, go in and take a look, then leave and go shopping and call to place your order 15-20 minutes before you want to eat, unless you have an iPod or enjoy staring at walls for extended periods of time. Â (Oh, and if you want to use your credit card, it's a minimum order of $10.)
Best Wings in the World more like it.
Best hot sauce.....Knock you on your a** hot sauce!
Read everyone else's review. There is just too much to write about this place. I'm feeling lazy.
My co-workers and I order from here religiously....today is one of those days. Â I am licking my fingers of chicken grease as I type....only the right hand. (I swear I am NOT contaminating the keyboard).
This place makes trying to be a vegetarian....so hard.
Take out only. Â Cheap tasty wings.
You can choose a different flavor every 5 wings you order, there are 40ish flavors to pick from. Â Ordered 20 wings, 4 different flavors: sweet and spicy plum, honey BBQ, jerk honey BBQ and Buffalo. Â They were all awesome. Â Well packaged, nothing spilled or anything on the walk back to campus. Â Eating them was a welcome mess.
1,000 wings for $450 ... crazy...
I happened to chance upon the review for Wings Around The World and the words "Kamikaze Wings" caught my attention. Â Super spicy wings? Â Oh yeah, I'm there.
When I pulled up, I couldn't help but notice the place was right across the street from a Popeye's Chicken and kitty-corner (am I the only one who loves this word, btw?) from a KFC. Â It takes cojones to set up shop in between these two chicken giants and I immediately knew I was at the right place.
The place itself is very unassuming and if you were trying to find it for the very first time, you'd probably miss it on your first try. Â The exterior sign isn't very flashy and neither is the interior.
Inside is a small counter along w/ a wall menu of their variety of wings sorted by their specific country of inspiration. Â There are A LOT of wings to choose here and trying to get a handle on things will probably make anyone's head spin. Â Luckily, the people manning the register are very accommodating and helpful in making your selection.
I chose the Kamikaze (spiciest on the menu), Fire Jerk (second spiciest on the menu according to the nice lady behind the register) and the Lemon Pepper (nowhere near spicy).
The wings are unlike any other wing I've had. Â Usually, wings tend to be sauce heavy on a dried out chicken wing. Â Not these wings. Â These wings are meaty and very tender. Â I'm not a chef by profession (and don't even play one on TV) but I could swear the spices are rubbed on which I think adds to the tastiness of it all.
The Kamikaze wings are spicy. Â Make no doubt, these have some serious heat to them. Â When I made the order, one of the cooks came up front to see who had ordered them. Â After I claimed responsibility, he wished me luck and told me that I had made a "brave" choice in ordering them.
The thing about the Kamikaze wings is that they're mostly heat and no real bite which I found a bit disappointing. Â They are tasty, don't get me wrong, but the heat to flavor ratio is so lopsided that eating this wing really isn't as fun as I had originally thought.
The Fire Jerk and Lemon Pepper were very good. Â Both were very tasty and the perfect blend of taste and heat. Â I am definitely going back to try out the rest of the flavors.
When you decide to visit Wings Around The World, I strongly suggest you calling in your order as the waiting area is a bit small and outside of reading the Travel-Agent themed logos and menus a few times over there's really not much else to occupy your time.
Enjoy!
Superbowl edit: Â You can't call in orders on Superbowl Sunday. Â Due to the large call volumes, you will have to make the order in person.
A carry-out-only wing place across the street from a Popeyes and kiddie-corner from a KFC? Â Yup, no contest (though I have nicknamed this little section of 35th in Bronzevile the "chicken strip").
Holy fuck, these are the best wings ever created. Â Their moniker is "34 flavors from 9 countries Around the World" but when I went in here they offered at least 15 more flavors that were either the "specials" or they hadn't gotten a chance to paint them on the board yet.
Sadly they don't have a web site (???), nor do they offer you a paper menu when you visit them. Â But they'll give you a business card with an email addy you're supposed to request a copy of the menu from (???). Â Kind of a PITA but their wings are so good I'll let it slide. Â But here are SOME of their wing flavors (taken from Menu Pages):
Jamaica: Fire Jerk, Rum BBQ, Honey Jerk, Jerk BBQ, Jerk Honey BBQ
China: Sweet & Sour, Szechuan, Sweet Ginger BBQ, Sweet & Spicy Plum
India: Curry, Masala, Cosmic Curry
Canada: Maple, Maple Twist, Montreal Madness
Japan: Teriyaki, Kamikaze (Hot!!!), Honey Teriyaki, Sesame, Ginger Sesame
Mexico: Jalapeno, Chipotle
Italy: Parmesan, Garlic, Tomato Basil Pesto, Parmesan Garlic.
America: BBQ, Honey BBQ, Bourbon, Buffalo, Spicy Buffalo, Lemon Pepper, Honey Lemon Pepper
Greece: Lemon Garlic, Zesty Orange
I, personally, would NEVER eat something named "Kamikaze", however I will say this for them: Â My mom had 2 bites of one wing and refused to eat more saying "that's just fucking WRONG!" (and she likes spicy food). Â 15 mins. later I went to kiss her goodbye and, when I got into the car, realized MY lips were burning!
I dream of the wings from this joint. Â That's how good they are.
Wings Around the World is a takeout only joint near IIT that offers wings in 34 different flavors from all points in the world. Â Where else can you get Indian curry wings, Italian Parmesan Garlic wings, Jamaican Honey jerk wings, or good old American hot wings all under one roof?
The wings here are fantastic. Â Watch out if you order any of the spicy ones as they really mean it! Â The wings used are plump, juicy pieces of meat. Â There's no ambience here, just good food and a funny owner who will tell you stories about Jamaica while your order is being whipped up. Â
For those who are feeling "health-conscious", you can have your wings grilled instead of fried for a small upcharge. Â
They'll do orders of 500 or 100 wings for parties, as well as smaller combos that come with a side (fries, onion rings, or cheese wedges) and a soda.
