I was looking forward to trying a new local restaurant, and I'm on an ongoing mission to discover really good Chinese food in Noblesville. Â So I was excited to order from Wok and Roll last night. Â
They're new and located at the west end of the Kroger strip mall on Logan Street. Â Clean and well-lit, I was impressed that their are sliding glass doors between the seating area and the kitchen ... I suspect to keep down the noise and the pervasive smell of cooking oil? Â
I ordered two appetizers, the shrimp toast and the wontons in garlic sauce. Â The toast was a huge bag with 8 pieces and they were average, nothing special but not awful, but fried just a little darker than I would really prefer. Â The wontons were disappointing. Â I guess it's my mistake for comparing them to the spicy wontons at Taiwan Tea House, where they're very light and steamed in a super-spicy sauce. Â These were heavy and fried, the sauce was very dark and thick, and as it cooled it became very gummy. Â The stuffing of the wontons was a tasty pork mixture and the best part of the order.
For entrees, we had my husband's standard of mu shu pork, and I ordered the kung pao chicken. Â I was going to order the General Tso's based upon reviews from another yelper, but decided I wanted something that wasn't fried. Â Well, much to my surprise, the chicken in the kung pao was battered and fried! Â What I liked was a tasty sauce (but not enough spicy flavor), lots of chicken with only a moderate amount of celery, and lots of whole roasted peanuts. Â Again, the sauce was thick and turned gelatinous as it cooled, I think from use of too much cornstarch. Â I was really wishing it wasn't fried. Â My husband's mu shu pork had all the right elements and the pork and veggies tasted fine. Â Once again, the side of duck sauce was so thick it had to be spread with a knife rather than drizzled onto the pancakes.
The basic elements were there, some of the flavors were good, but the overly-thick sauces and the fried chicken in the kung pao were enough of a turn-off for me. Â I'm still looking for really good Chinese in Noblesville, for now my best bet remains Peking Garden up north on Little Chicago.
