Not bad, not great. Remember the best BBQ you ever had and then take it down a few notches -- That's Wolf's. And Wolf's is one of the few restaurants that haven't been pushed out of Evansville in favor of a chain restaurants so if you want something that is Native Evansville this is as close as it gets.
Save yourself the grief and skip the Sunday buffet. Order dinner from the menus, or better yet get the take-out. The vegetable side dishes are terrible and the salads are mostly cheap iceberg lettuce. The bean, mac-n-cheese, and potatoes are where its at for sides.
In a way, Wolf's Bar-B-Q is a microcosm of the city of Evansville. A great institution that's slowly slid into mediocrity that caters to a dying crowd, desperately in need of a reinvention, but still retaining something approximating charm.
Wolf's used to be good - 10-15 years ago. Â Dad died, kids took over, not too much change, then down hill fast. Â I was in a few weeks ago on a nostalgic/second chance visit and it's even worse than I remembered. Â Unlike the other reviewer, I love bbq and can't think of many things better than all you can eat Q, but arrrggh. Â Buffet is old, dried out, or empty... and not really cheap on the bbq $ scale. Â Skip the disappointment; get a Fred Burger at Fred's on Virginia(?) by Deaconess Hospital or a breaded tenderloin at the Hilltop or Hornet's Nest. Â Lot's of very good mom & pop restaurants in E'ville and Wolf's isn't anymore. Â (sauce is still primo tho, I get a gallon everytime I'm in town)
