my fiance and i were on the southside picking out wedding bans and the ladies at the store recommended wonderburger. before we stepped in, we could already smell the greasy goodness. $5 for a juicy double cheeseburger with grilled onions + curly fries. even the grilled chicken salad was surprisingly scrumptious. the restaurant itself definitely reminded me of a good ol' american diner and the food complimented the setting quite well.
Review Source:Overall I would have to say I like the Wonderburger but it is far from being one of the best. I appreciate the tradition of a old school neighborhood joint so at least it shows something for a place that can stay in business fire so long.
The place in small and very divey. It send like its always high school kids taking the orders and working the grill. The burgers are very good not to small but bit to big, juicy and come wrapped in paper just like the old days. But the fries always seem to disappoint me. Compared to the other burgers you can get in the area I would choose Wonderburger every time, but they are far from the best.
Cruel fate (ok, the closing of Richie's) brought me here, but in spite of its lack of fance, Wonderburger got the job done. Â I liked the little house that encased the grill. Â I like little houses of all types. Â
Lack of vegetarian options led my companion to the fried appetizer basket, but it was a veritable horn of plenty, but with more cholesterol. Â I enjoyed the lightness of the curly fries, though they could have used a bit more salt. Â French dip was good, solid, and the au jus was flavorful. Â That's the test for me.
Service is high school gals, but they weren't surly. Â You know how these teens can get. Â I kid. Â We were in and out in under an hour. Â They take credit cards, the food is solid and cheap, and there's local art to entertain the eyes and the sense of humor.
I don't think you could hate yourself for eating here. Â This is not a destination place and maybe I will return and try something other than a Wonderburger and fries. Â Really 2 1/4 stars.
The fries which receive so much acclaim are below average. Â Sure they were one of the first joints with curly fries but what I witnessed was more slack ass attention to detail and an utter failure of execution.
We sat at the bar, Â it was twenty five minutes before close. Â It was obvious that we would either be the last or next to last customers. Â I looked over at the young man at the helm, Â he had two baskets of fries already cooked. Â Next to these baskets was a bin of blanched fries, Â about thirty orders just "resting". Â We ordered two wonderburgr's and fries, Â to my surprise I watched the gentleman drop some fresh fries down and I got that warm and fuzzy feeling about some crispy greasy in a good way carbs.
When the food arrived the burger were wrapped neatly in paper, Â very thin burgers and cooked crispy. Â I found the meat to be bland, Â american cheese annoys the hell out of me and I wished I had read the menu closer. Â Grilled onions were not cooked enough. Â
The fries,  well what can I say,  those aforementioned freshly dropped  spuds were pulled from the oil and left to die in the basket.  We were served the old fries,  quickly reheated in the oil and unsalted.  They were really bad.
There are many many many places to get a burger, Â this is not one of them.
I mentioned going back to try something else but the descriptions were lacking, Â "Kosher Corned beef on Rye with pickle spear"? Â Â "Roast Beef with sour cream and pickle spear"?
The place was very dingy and dirty, Â quite neglected I felt. Â The great irony was the waitress scrubbing the shake machine with a toothbrush, Â all the while I was staring at a big hair hanging off a greasy door right in front of me.
It pains me to slam these old school family run places, Â I hope they read the reviews and think about how hard it is to get new business, Â a dirty average place is hard to return to.
I love eating here, the food is always good at least in my experince
I try to have something different each time and so far I have'nt been disappointed,I love the fish and chips! i also like the local art thats on the wall  sure some of it is crap, and some is just something to snicker meanly about but there is one painting of (what I am asuming )is some local house that is really quite interesting ,a little primitive a little funny they should put up information about the artwork on the walls! I wonder if any of this stuff is for sale and i wonder if anyone ever buys this stuff! Hey I wonder if  thats where the name comes from?
Oh yeah, this place is the goods. A renown place near the "Ever Greenwood" area. Yes I really just combined Evergreen Park and Mount Greenwood. Where's my Nobel Prize?
Being my first experience here, I had to try a burger, just to see how wonderous it is. I opted for the double wonderburger basket. But first, we ordered chili, which to my surprise was outstanding. We also ordered "crunch puppies", which are like hush puppies, but with mini hot dogs inside. Pretty simple, yet delicious!
The burger with fries were also really good. I ordered my double burger with grilled onions. It's not a mamoth sized burger that you'd get from Top Notch, but also not puny. It's presented nicely wrapped in wax paper, along side the crunchy curly fries. Yummeh!
After hanging out in this area for 3-4 years now, I can't tell you why it's taken me so long to finally come here. But I will be making up for lost time!
There is only so much that you can do with a burger with few ingredients. Supposedly what makes a wonderburger is the "wondersauce". Ehhh... Don't get me wrong. It's a good burger. The patty itself in terms of burger is good quality, but as for the meal in itself, I didn't find anything that stood out to me as something great. It's not something that I would go out of my way for. I did like the oldschool feel of the 50's malt shop though. That was pretty cool. I also tried the stanley, which is a hot dog wrapped in cheese next to a beef tamale inside of a hot dog bun topped with chili. Now that was pretty good. But it also had need not be mentioned side effects.
Review Source:Went with a friend for a quick bite to eat. Â We sat right by the front window, and I noticed that the window well was dirty. Â Call me picky, but when a restaurant's little things aren't taken care of, I wonder about other things I cna't see.
Our drinks were never refilled (even though we did catch our server and ask), and I didn't think the food was great. Â I ordered a grilled cheese (a staple at any restaurant) and my friend ordered a burger and we split an order of the cheese fries. Â The fries were good. Â The burger, my friend said, was ok. Â The grilled cheese was fine, nothing remarkable, but nothing great. Â We ended up having to go to the front to ask for our check because our server had disappeared. Â We walked out smelling like grease.
Overall, it may be an institution in the neighborhood, but I probably won't be going back.
They definitely do a nice burger and fries.
The meat is juicy and the total package is hot, but the standout is the relishy stuff that they put on there that is the difference between their "regular" burgers and their "Wonder"burgers - it's almost like a giardiniera, but with tomatoes and not spicy and kinda sweet instead. Â Very interesting and tasty.
The fries are good too, but also a little different - kinda curly, but soft and not really crunchy or very crispy. Â Well flavored. Â
This place would probably be a pretty solid third for me in a far south side burger death match, with Hand-Burgers coming in first and Top Notch a number two.
Wonder-rific. It's terrific.
Double Wonderburger w/ bacon. Nice.
Cheesy side sauce for curly fries really a great touch.
Even better. The strawberry shake.
Nice, friendly enough warm spot on a wintry wonderland day.
As burger & fries joints go, this is a neighborhood place that doesn't mind if you're an outsider with an appetite.
these burgers are great, although i suggest getting the double or triple only because i like alot of meat in my burgers. the patty is thin but getting the triple or double corrects this, if you, like myself like BIG BURGERS. the fries here are to die for i love them, they are super thin curly fries, and so very crispy(yumm). so far i only had the burgers, but this place has quite to choose from hotdogs, corndogs, and a daily burger creation etc... to get here just take kedzie South all the way to 110th and park on the street. i would also suggest a comic book shop to go to within walking distance, its on 111th n kedzie 2 buildings from the corner, alternate reality. i myself usually come here because the sales on first day books, also the owner is super friendly, and they have a good selection.
