My GF and I loved this place! We went one evening on the island and enjoyed it so much we went back the following day and got exactly the same thing. Pulled Pork sandwiches elsewhere will never be the same. Long wait on the first night but we didn't mind as we got some beers from the convenience store across the street. Can't wait to come back to the island and have a Big Hot Woody again! ;)

Food truck style kinda place. There are 2 woody's - 1 for seafood/fried chicken, 1 for the BBQ

** Smoked chicken: tender, smokey and awesome. Sauce was super smokey and great
** Pulled pork sandwich: also very good
** Side of Applesauce: pretty tasty /refreshing

Nice place to stop on a hot day, hammocks, games and more to entertain you as you wait.

It's not a fancy restaurant, there is no servers or food runners, furniture is old and you might have to wait in line to put an order. But when you get the food-that's it,that's why you are here and nothing else matters. Pulled pork sandwich, ribs, crab cake-all is sooo delicious. After 10 days on  Chincoteague Island i went to this place for food every day or even twice a day.Best food here, period.
    P.S. Bring cash-no CC accepted.

Seriously, this place had some of the best smoked chicken that I have ever had. Tender, juicy, still pink inside and with wonderful flavor.

We ordered the sampler platter and I have to say, it was enough for both of us and we had a lot leftover. Its massive.

The pork was great, but the weak spot was definitely the ribs They were not bad, but just not as good as the chicken and the pork.

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone.

This restaurant was one of the highly rated ones on Yelp. We visited Chicoteague for the weekend and was looking for a place to eat. At first we thought it was a sit-down restaurant but arriving there it was like beach shack like some place out of Hawaii blasting with beach music it was really cute. There were two stationary food trucks one known for its fried chicken, fish tacos, crab sandwiches etc I had the fried chicken it was fantastic! I went back there the next day. Along with the fried chicken I also loved the in-house made banana pudding it was so tasty with bits of banana and was not too sweet. My fiance tried the pulled pork sandwich at the other food truck it took a while the sandwiches lots of people hung out and waited for the food the next day he tried the fried chicken and pulled pork sandwiches. We also loved the corn fritters and their crunchy sweet potato fries. No alcohol there it was BYOB. But who would have thought there would be a place like Woody's in Chicoteague? It was awesome!

This is a really cool little place to stop and hang out for a while in the shade and listen to reggae music. Your kids will be happy. Would be nice if the BBQ was a bit better though.

Way overcooked smoked chicken, was very dry and had no pink smoke ring on the meat but had nice smoke flavor. I'm not sure how that happens, but that's what I got. Came with a little cup of BBQ sauce. Good pulled pork sammich, healthy portion. Good coleslaw, sweet BBQ beans.

On the plus side, the kids meal came in a beachworthy plastic bucket with little shovel, perfect timing since my daughter had smashed her too-cheap beach bucket earlier and was very sad about it. Her chicken nuggets were good with apple sauce on the side.

We got the BBQ sampler. The meats are smokey and delicious. The chicken had great flavor and wasn't dry, even the white meat. The ribs were great and not over sauced. The pork was my least favorite but still delicious. Highly recommended.  Probably the best food on the island.

Tip: buy a six-pack across the street for $7. They don't serve alcohol here.

Amazing design for a shore area restaurant.  After hours of biking around Assateague and Chincoteague, we decided to stop in for a sandwich.

When we got there, we weren't sure what to expect-- games all over the place (tic-tac-toe, ring toss, etc.).  There were hammocks, standing tables, seated tables, and patio furniture.  The main kitchen is the tiniest shack with a smoker directly behind it.

Apparently, all of this equation equals unbelievably good food.  The Carolina sandwich was tangy, saucy, and packed full with meaty goodness. The LR Parson drink was also a tasty one-- half lemonade, half iced tea.  I was fat, full and happy afterward.

Make this a must do when you're in Chincoteague or just passing through.

Overall: AWESOME pulled pork.  Very cool vibe, casual, standing only tables.

You know that guy on one of the food networks about dives and drive-thrus?  That guy with the crazy hair and beard? That guy who says nothing but "mmmm-mmm MMMMM!!!"?

    I hate that guy.

BUT, now I can relate.  I bit into my funky little sandwich and the angels sang.  Wow.

Carolina Pulled Pork Sandwich: OUTSTANDING.  Nice twang to the sauce, a bit of spicey hot, and you could still taste the pork.  Very nice balance of all the flavors.  And it wasn't dripping in the sauce either.  And the bun was ever so slightly toasted, but still nice and soft.

Smoked Bacon Fries in Ranch Sauce: Great.  I just thought this was so creative, just based on that I would have loved them.  The bacon was in chunks, not itsy-bitsy weak-ol' bacon bits.  These were more like he-man chunks o' bacon.  And the ranch tasted home made.  The fries themselves lacked a smokiness to them, but maybe I missed in since the ranch had so much personality.   But again, they resisted the urge to slop on the sauce, and the ranch was just drizzled in there.

After 4 hours of biking, we stopped by Woody's for some tasty food. The place is set up as a shack in the middle of a big field. It reminded roadside eatery at hawaii. They have tic tac tables with colorful lawn chairs. My boyfriend and I shared the Carolina sandwich and LR parson drink. The sandwich was delicious and the smoked pork is specially tender. It was very satisfying.

Definitely plan to stop by when you visit the wildlife refuge.

Woody's barbecue is the best around.  Family from North Carolina says it is even better than barbecue they can get around home.  We love it and hate to see them close for the season in October.

Favorites are the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and onion rings, and the fried chicken wings.  The ribs, baked beans and corn bread are great too.  Sometimes we get pulled pork, ribs and sides to bring home to warm up for dinner.

I'd give them 5 stars except they don't have indoor seating or bathrooms.

Basically a nicely decorated carry out with the wait time of a dine in place. The food was decent and my chicken was dry. The shrimp po boy left something to be desired... For the prices did not reflect the quality.

    Gluten free BBQ!

Woody's offers plenty of tasty, gluten free options along with their non-gluten free items. And best of all, their staff is GF knowledgable. Mark (the owner?) was warm, friendly and helpful in describing the GF items on the menu and how they would be prepared to avoid contamination. In addition to the menu items that are GF, as you'd expect, Woody's offers a full menu of all kinds of BBQ, sides, non-BBQ sandwiches and salads.

It is a laid-back place that makes eating out easy and fun for people of all ages and those of us who have to live GF. I look forward to eating at Woody's again next summer

I tried Woody's for the first time tonight. I got a pound of pulled pork barbecue and a medium fries for $19. I felt the pork was great, but there definitely could have been more sauce included. It was about 3/4 of a condiment cup that you will find at many restaurants that offer to-go condiments. We finished the sauce after getting through about 1/2 the container of pork.

The fries tasted great and looked hand-cut, but they were not a great value by any means. The medium was slightly over $4 and was only about the size of a standard mug.

The service was a bit slow, but I'll give them that it was dinner time and fairly busy. All-in-all I would go there again for the barbecue.

My review for Woody's Beach BBQ is identical to my review for Woody's Eatery.  They are situated side by side on The Maddox and share a central parking lot. The BBQ is on the left while the Eatery is on the right.  The same quality service, awesome food, and quirky decor found at the Eatery is also found here.

The main difference between the 2 is that pork is served at the BBQ and chicken is served at the Eatery. We always end up ordering from both sides of Woody's and meeting in the middle for an engaging meal shared with others seated around the grounds.

When finished, stick around for a friendly game of corn hole, tether ball, giant tic tac toe, the chain/loop game (not really sure what this game is called but it Is highly addictive), and more.

Again...I LOVE Woody's and will always find time to go when on the Island.

Woody's is the best place to get a casual, delicious meal on Chincoteague Island. The owners have created their own little campground where you can relax on a hammock, play some games, and just take in the simplicity of Chincoteague. The pulled pork is the best around and my parents always beg me to ship some to their home in Houston when I visit the island. My personal favorite is the Eatery side, where you can order fried chicken and all types of seafood. The soft crab sandwich is absolutely divine and the fried chicken is perfectly crunchy and delicious. Woody's is the perfect place to stop and grab lunch when you're on the way to the beach. My only complaint is that there are no credit card machines, so make sure you bring plenty of cash!

We stopped here for lunch after a morning of exploring.  We got a combo platter to share so we could try a little of everything.  It's a no frills BBQ shack that doesn't  even have chairs...just high top tables that you can stand at.  They have some cook lawn games, so it's probably a fun place at night with a big group, some BBQ and a few beers.

    Smoked chicken: delicious
    Ribs: Awesome
Pulled pork: OK...not bad, not awesome, just OK
    Coleslaw: YUM...and I don't even like coleslaw
Beans: Meh...I'm a huge fan of beans and these had a weird flavor...probably just the seasoning that didn't care for.

They have hand cut fries too, but with all the food we had, we didn't have a chance to try them. We hope to next time.

The lemonade is also worth mentioning.  Nice a tart, not too sweet.  Really hit the spot on a hot day.  They also had a selection of fancy bottled sodas.

We will definitely be returning to Woody's on our next visit. Highly recommend.

This review is only for the BBQ side of Woodys.  We did not try the seafood side. (all crabbed out by then)
There's a smoker out back:  a very good sign.  And this is your only option for real pork or ribs on the island.  And also one of the better deals.
For $8, we had the largest pulled pork sandwich I've ever experienced, your choice of toppings: coleslaw, onion rings or fries.  No way to lose really.  One sandwich fed us both.  One each would've been deadly.

All of Woodys is a Beach Boys throwback, complete with surfboards and beach hammocks to eat and relax in.

This is not BBQ for the purist. It is however a ton of fun and really tasty. Our first trip was pulled pork signature and corn bites. Loved being outside on a great night and are going back again.

THIS PLACE WAS FANTASTIC. Order the blue crab macaroni and I promise you won't be disappointed! I think it is one of the best places to eat on the island. We were there on our honeymoon, and it was by far the best place we went to for that trip. We look forward to returning.

    See you soon Woody's!

This place was awesome! We actually came here twice on our weekend trip to Chincoteague Island. The first time we came here we got an asian shrimp taco, a crab mac and cheese, and a mango or pineapple lemonade (I forgot which one). Everything was very good which made us come back a second day to try out the BBQ since it seemed to be all the rage.

We came back the day we were going to leave thinking we could get something before we hit the road. Turns out that it wasn't open yet! What a bummer - but we went around town for a little bit and ended up coming back to some long lines for lunch. I ended up getting the baby back ribs with the beans and the apple sauce for sides. The ribs were fall off the bone and not too dry. There was a lot of sauce and it was pretty tender. The beans and the apple sauce were also delicious. I'd definitely go back here if I ever come back to this little island as it was a rather memorable experience and there's also many other things to try. Definitely a place to stop by if you're in the area. :)

Been to Woody's twice and loved it both times. First of all, the atmosphere is UNMATCHED! You get happy just driving on to the property. It's beachy, fun, there's music playing, you can play games while you wait for your meal - very whimsical.

Had Woody's signature sandwich - bbq pork with a big ol' fried onion ring on the top and memphis style bbq sauce. It is one hardy sized sandwich. MMmmmmm - a side of hand cut fries and an Emerson Taylor (their version of iced tea and lemonade) rounded out the meal. I wish I had an Emerson Taylor right now.

Shared a banana pudding later on and it tasted like real custard - not out of a can (if it is out of a can I want to know the brand!).

The only thing that bugged me were the abundant flies (pun intended) but hey, it's an outside restaurant -- this is one of those things you overlook because the food is fresh and delish. Definitely go.

Completely awesome!!  No frills beach shack(s - there are 2), extremely casual.  The crab cake was the size of my face and all crab - soooo amazing and one of the best I have ever had!! :D Fried chicken was delicious, and tasted like good quality chicken - not fast food.  What more could you want - the best foods ever while on a beach vacation.  YUM!!  The lemonade was very refreshing.  I just wish the side of macaroni was bigger!  And that they sold beer...

I would give 4.5 stars for the fact that there was no bathroom, I had to pee so bad during the entire meal that at the time, I would have even appreciated a porta potty.

One of the most relaxing places I have ever encountered. True Barbecue,  where the flavor comes from the tender smoked meat, rather than some over sweetened, over salted sticky sauce. Fresh squeezed beverages and great sides, it was a while ago, I think I had blueberry lemonade, which was excellent. The adorable brightly painted seating, surfboards, and laundry lines draped with tropical printed shirts scattered over the lawn made for a place that was every bit as relaxing to lounge about as Chincoteague Beach itself, which says A LOT coming from me, as I am not naturally a very relaxed person. Ahhhhh, a bit far from Philly, but I will be back, some day...

Woody's is the best barbeque...in Chincoteague!   I had the Woody's signature sandwich - pulled pork BBQ with an onion ring and fries. The pork was fine, but was a little weak in the smoke flavor department. The sauce was abundant (perhaps too abundant ) but ordinary. The fries are boardwalk style, which often translates into soggy, and Woody's were no exception.

Overall, the food was fine, but after reading many of the other reviews, I expected a lot better. I'm not a barbeque aficionado, but I have had it at the BBQ "hotspots" around the country (NC, TX, Memphis, Kansas City, etc.).  Compared to those places, Woody's really doesn't compete, but for a decent meal at a fun spot in Chincoteague, Woody's does just fine.

Get excited! Not only the best BBQ shack, crab cake, and fried chicken eatery... they are adding a burger hut!!! The owner is not only a foodie who "gets it" in every way, but his marketing, atmospherics, and customer service are above and beyond in every way. You cannot go wrong at this series of places to eat.. something for the whole family and everything is OUTSTANDING. seriously... everything.

This is mainly a review of the service.  My family and I went there for dinner when we were staying in Chincoteague.  My sister is disabled and has Autistic-like outbursts sometimes.  When my family was trying to get her to eat her food, she was throwing a fit and screaming and crying.  One of the staff members came over to where we were sitting and gave us a banana pudding on the house for her, because he saw we were having a hard time.  It's nice to know that there are such thoughtful people out there =)  Kudos to their awesome staff!

Woody's falls in the category of those restaurants that you want to love, but the food simply fails to meet expectations. In all fairness, this establishment is located in Chincoteague, VA, a place not known for it's BBQ. The physical setting of the restaurant is like a Key West outdoor bar and eatery. The staff was very friendly--but the food...

The pork BBQ sandwich which I had was not well smoked, but was still overly dry. Either it was overcooked or had been sitting around for some time. The taste of the two sauces I tried were mediocre. The slaw on the sandwich was fresh. Not a great sandwich by any means and certainly not anywhere near a five star experience as suggested by other Yelpers.

The staff recommended that my wife try the crab cake sandwich. I thought it was tasty (even fried) and that the cocktail sauce accompanying it was homemade with fresh horseradish and very good. According to the wife, she thought it was bland and lacking in crab flavor.

The much talked about corn nuggets were good, but nothing that I would ever re-order. I can't understand why all the excitement about them from other reviewers.

Anyway, if you are in Chincoteague and have a craving for BBQ or a crab cake sandwich, try it. But don't approach it high expectations.

Just about everything we tried at Woody's was either good or great.  The BBQ was very good, the sides were fun and yummy, the fried chicken was delicious, etc. etc. etc.  Ironically, the only real disappointment was the french fries, which, though "hand-cut," were soggy.

A word to the wise: the crab cake sandwich was phenomenal.

Finally, a note about their service: incredibly friendly and attentive.  It's a pleasure to eat there because of the staff.

All in all, this is currently our favorite place to eat on Chincoteague.

Honestly, this restaurant is so amazingly good in every way that it the memory of it alone will make you plan your next trip to Chincoteague as soon as you get home.

Their crab cakes are the most amazing crab cakes on the island! Scratch that, make it planet earth. Seriously.  We're talking five blue crabs worth of meat, super-fresh, with barely any filler, and an awesome crisp. Order the  crab cake sandwich (don't be discouraged by the price, it is incredibly worth it.  Have you ordered five blue crabs before? They cost more than this sandwich.) and throw out the bun and sauce because they'll just distract from the crab cake.  NOTE that crab cakes are only served on the right side (there's two little stands here; some stuff's the same, but the left has more bbq and the right has the crab cakes).

The atmosphere is completely fun, laid back, and all outdoors. Seating is on tree trunks and hammocks, and they have games like cornhole, tic-tac-toe, tetherball, and the ring game for kids.

The corn nuggets are also fantastic and make a great side with the yum yum sauce.

Tried to venture out to the fried chicken here and it was pretty dry. The woody's signature sandwich was barbecue with onion rings and slaw and it was a very solid barbecue sandwich. Longer lines in the BBQ line too. So non-crab eaters will very much enjoy the bbq, but if you like crab stay focused on getting that crab cake sandwich.

You cannot come to Chincoteague without visiting Woody's at least twice.

Woodys has crafted the perfect equation in casual dining experiences: sublime bbq, chill atmosphere, friendly faces and Margie the dog (the owner's pet and unofficial Woodys mascot). I would travel from any corner of the world to visit Woodys! I won't even go into details about the menu because everything is fantastic. So bring your appetite, enjoy the Marley and Buffett, and prepare for a nap and/or food coma afterward!

What a SWEET place, in such a SWEET town.  Definitely the best BBQ I've ever had.  Probably the reason I will return to this town again this summer too :)

They have little games you can play while waiting for your food or to work off your food... which ever you decide to do.  Friendly and courtesy service and just an all around great vibe and feel.  A must go to.  Damn it go on a roadtrip, this place with not disappoint AND it's right near the beach.

This place is everything you hear about it. The location is easy to pass..so be looking. Woods offers a menu that any meat eater can appreciate. Service is quick. Sauce is great. Only grip.....pork sandwich could have been warmer and a bit more pulled. The pork was plentiful, but still in rather large chunks.  I recommend the peach lemonade too. And remember, don't feed the resident dog (Marie).

Drove by this place a few times on the way to Assateague and the smell of the BBQ called.  Its just a BBQ joint run out of a trailer on the side of the road with a large parking lot that was full every time we drove by.  Finally stopped by on Sunday and waited an hour to place our order and get the food.  The owner said it was the longest line they had yet experienced and took pics.  Just our luck.  The parking lot is decorated with lots of beach stuff including a clothes line strung with hawaiian shirts and swim trunks.  Old surfboards are nailed up to the posts and beach music is playing.  There are a few tables with umbrellas for people to eat there, plus a small section for kids to play tetherball and the like.  (Hey, I spent an hour in line, let me describe what i saw for that hour..LOL).
The menu has many options and we stood in line for a bit smelling the food and getting hungrier so we decided to do a large sampling:  BBQ chicken, fries, corn nuggets with yum-yum sauce, pulled pork sandwich, cole slaw, baked beans and banana pudding, plus an emerson taylor (iced tea and lemonade mix) and a bottle of grape soda.  The corn nuggets were surprising.  They contained whole pieces of corn but were quite addictive and yummy and the sauce, well yeap..it was yum-yum.  The BBQ chicken was reported to be a bit spicy, tasting more like jerk chicken than BBQ, but it was apparently good and there was only bones left at the end.  The sandwich was awesome.  The pulled pork was tender and flavorful, with the right amount of red sauce to keep the bread from being overwhelming.  The onion ring on top of the pork was a delightful crunch.  Yum.  It is good that this is 4 hours from where I live or else I might end up eating there all the time.  Definitely a must visit.
