I love walking up to this restaurant in old town Spring. It's like I'm on my way to the follies with Idgie Threadgood (fried green tomatoes reference). As I walk in, the RR crossing arms come down and a train usually creeps by, 20 feet from the front door. The waitstaff seems a little inexperienced, but helpful. I guess there were cutbacks since I was last in, because they now ask you if you want beer bread, instead of bringing it out. That would be okay, except for the fact that they used to bring out cute little mini loaves that you sliced at the table, now you get a generous slice of bread per person, but it is too dense for my liking. I don't come here for the bread. This place is homemade, country cooking. The sides are delicious, like stewed okra, mashed potatoes, squash casserole, etc. I typically pair these sides with chicken fried chicken. The peppered cream gravy makes every bite melt in your mouth. Drinks were not consistently refilled, and we had to ask for napkins, but service was friendly. This place is stick to your ribs, comfort food and I love it! I'm glad that parking is kind of lousy, because then I burn off a few extra calories walking back to the car.
Review Source:In my mission to find the absolute best burger in Houston, we traveled to Old Town Spring to try out a new restaurant and visit the unique shops in the area. Mind you, it was Mother's Day and around noon so there was already a wait when we arrived. After about 15 minutes we were seated. The restaurant was right up our alley as my kids enjoy history and this place has it. Once a hotel / saloon servicing the lumber trade in Spring at the turn of the century is now a popular place to eat. On to the food.
We basically focused on two (2) items that were expressed in other reviews. The service was done well and the only mistake in our order was quickly fixed. The cheeseburger was good, not great, so my search will continue....This is one time I mostly agree with other reviews. The bun was what you get off the shelf from the grocery store, the burger a bit over cooked from what I ordered (medium), but all in all, it was good. The fries seem to be cut fresh and they came to the table a bit soft and greasy. This happens when a restaurant tries to do the right thing, but fails in execution. My onion rings were excellent. They seemed to have a tempura like batter and I would come back for them alone. The chicken fried chicken was also very good, but the mashed potato side  was as if scooped from a buffet line. I just don't understand what is so hard about making mashed potatoes. So far, the best we've had come from our own kitchen. The gravy with with potatoes / CFC wasn't all that either and in assisting others at my table clean their (CFC) plates, I choose to forgo this bland accessory. All in all, decent meal with a couple of highlights, good atmosphere and service. Solid three stars.
