Really good!
Went there for lunch and sat at the bar/counter not realizing I needed to order at the register. There is a sign but I didn't notice it. Just want to let others know to save them my embarrassment.
Had the Italian sandwich. Warm, fresh bread and quality ingredients. Loved the balsamic vinegar.
Looking forward to trying the rest of the sandwiches. Very difficult to pick - they all sounded good!
Will definitely be back!
...
The Sol Bock sandwich is a new favorite!
I walked in here not really knowing what to expect. Â
I walked out of here excited to come back.
The bf and I almost always order 2 different things and try each others', but we both saw the beef brisket sandwich with kimchi and nothing else mattered. Â
While we waited for our food, I kept thinking maybe I should have ordered something else. Would a kimchi and brisket sandwich at a random coffee shop/bakery possibly be excellent?
Oh. My. Goodness.
We both made the right decision. Â First off, the bread! It was a cross between a croissant and a loaf of french bread, and super freakin' delicious. (As it should be in a bakery, I suppose.) The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, and even my Texan boyfriend couldn't stop raving about how it was the best he has had outside of Texas. Â It was his first kimchi adventure, and he thought the combined texture with the brisket was slightly offputting, but loved the flavor. I personally thought the texture worked great with it, and the flavors really popped. Â
We got an order of chips & salsa too, which was pretty unnecessary since the sandwiches are a good size. The chips tasted delicious, but the salsa left something to be desired. Â
We also split a cupcake, since it is pretty much impossible for me to go to a cute little bakery with their old fashioned display full of gorgeous cupcakes and NOT get one. Â We got the red velvet, which he liked but honestly I could take it or leave it. The frosting was good but the cupcake itself, ehh. Â Maybe it had been sitting there all day (we were there around 3pm), I'm not sure. Â Hopefully their cakes are better than their cupcakes. Â
But back to the sandwich - I did not want eating it to end, I really didn't. Â I was so surprised and impressed with it, and for $7 I especially will not hesitate to go back. Â I'm pretty sure they make their own kimchi, and you can add it to any sandwich for $1.50, or get a side of it for $3 or $4. Â
The service could use some work, but I'm glad we stayed despite being looked at when we walked in, somewhat rudely, and then getting ignored for a good 2 minutes. Â We were the only ones there. Â Once I bit into my sandwich I forgot all about this though, but looking back it really isn't hard to smile, or say hello, or hey if you guys want to look over the menu quick I will be right with you, or SOMEthing.
If I was only rating them for lunch, it would be an easy 5 star. But being snubbed immediately and a meh cupcake at a place with 'bakery' in their name makes it a 4 star. I look forward to hopefully bumping it up to 5 next visit - we'll see! :)
Kimchi ramen.
Talk about mashups, this is a winner! Â 3T's offers up some really good ramen in a kimchi laden broth. Â You can order it plain with just (JUST) a poached egg or you can add beef, chicken or pork for a couple bucks more. Â
When the ramen arrives it is in a bowl of almost boiling broth, be warned, it is really hot, so don't burn your tongue. Â The surface of the broth is studded with green onions sliced on the bias, bean sprouts and a lovely orange oil, imparted by the kimchi.
3T's makes their own kimchi which you can also add to any of their sandwiches, which I will try in the future.
If I feel a cold coming on I will first head to the Kimchi Tofu House in Stadium Village but I will follow it up with some kimchi ramen from 3T's.
That should scare off a cold!
A little hidden gem on the corner of 34th Ave and 50th St in South Minneapolis, this refitted bakery has come a long ways since it was the Scandia Bakery. In addition to the lovely desserts, this place features a deliciously simple menu, comfort food with a Korean flair. The KimChee Ramen is perfect warmer on a cold winter day as is the Beef Brisket Sandwich with kimchee. To pair with your food they have a small but decent selection of local beers and even have a selection of wine on tap.
A small and unpretentious little spot, 3 Tiers is a charming and cozy little place. Just as suited to a dinner date as it is to working with a cup of coffee in the afternoon.
I'm so happy that I stumbled across this little place a couple weeks ago. I've been for dinner twice now, and plan to go back again. The menu is surprisingly nimble for what I assumed was a tiny little place - and apparently there's a kim chee master in the kitchen, because that pops a lot on the menu.
I've ordered the pork Bahn Mi, the chicken cilantro soup, and the meatloaf sandwich. I was totally happy with all of these items. I will say the chicken cilantro soup seemed bland, but I had a cold that night so it fit the bill just fine.
I think there was only one server working both times I went, so if it got really busy, the service might slow down, but I have no complaints. Prompt, polite, and happy to offer recommendations.
I will definitely be coming back again because there are so many more things on the menu I want to try!
This is a cute little re-vamped bakery. Â
The treats in the window look delicious and very tempting. Â the bar is nice and I like that they have craft beer AND wine on tap - fun!
We have been here twice now - first time was breakfast, I had the asian omlette special, which was really good, man tried the biscuits and gravy - that wasn't as impressive. Â I was wishing I would have gotten one of those killer looking breakfast sandwiches when we were on the way out the door .. .Next time - I think that's the better choice.
Recently I stopped in and got two versions of the Bahn Mi sandwiches - meat loaf and pulled pork. Â The bread was pretty outstanding however i thought the sandwiches overall were pretty tasteless.Definitely was missing the kick or the special flavors that Bahn Mi has - guess i will be sticking to the more traditional locales for this.
Definitely like what they are doing - i will be back to try some other things for sure, just haven't found anything that I have fallen in love with yet as far as food goes. Â I really want to though!!
This place has really added to the area, I live really close by and have been happy to have it here since it opened.
I really, really like this place for the following reasons:
1) Their sandwiches are really good, starting with the bread. Â Their meatloaf sandwich with a horseradish sauce and carmelized onions is AWESOME. Â Honorable mentions: Brisket with kimchee, Veg. Bahn Mi (They've added some new ones recently that I want to try). Reasonably priced too!
2) Their latte's are delicious. I got my girlfriend to try and now she loves their Maple Latte as much as I do.
3) They've added a nice little beer and wine bar! Â I like the nice, open feel of the place.
4) Their breakfast sandwich sounds delicious and have been meaning to try it.
My only critiques: 1)Their pastries are just a little too pricey for me to buy often. Â The cupcakes are great - but I think if they lowered the price on them, they would sell a lot more. Maybe I'm just the wrong demographic. Â 2) The Cubano sandwich doesn't work for me - maybe it's their pickles. Â I took them off and enjoyed it more.
3) For some reason, I always try to go on the day they are closed. Â Which I can't tell you when, but I am sure it will be the day I try to go next. lol. Â It's like Monday..or Tuesday.
But seriously - I really like this place a lot. Â The owner couple seems really nice, the two servers I have always interacted with are really nice women and I enjoy stopping in. Â I hope it becomes a permanent fixture in this great East Nokomis community. Â They will always have my support and business!
I am happy to say I have found a little gem in South Minneapolis. I met a friend for brunch today and was pleasantly surprised by 3 Tiers.
We both ordered the corned beef hash with poached eggs. A tasty meal, if a little spendy.
I was a little shocked that they didn't open until 10am. I think they are missing out on a breakfast rush.
I will have to come back for dinner. I also noticed their great selection of craft beers on tap.
I popped in here recently for dinner and really enjoyed it. Â I had never been to the place even though I live in the area. Â I had only half-noticed it in the past and I think it's because of the signage outside; the place kind of melts into the background of the building. Â I'm glad I'm aware of the stuff they put out now because I'm around 34th very frequently.
We ordered a round of drinks initially and they do those up right. Â Some are kinda spendy but $5 for a Crispin on a warm night wasn't much to complain about; pretty standard for Mpls (read: because it's the Cities it's overpriced). Â But they have some good beers and wines on tap at a cute little bar up front and honestly, you have a drink or two here with dinner, not to get loaded.
We got the gringo nachos, which some of my party liked but I found kind of bland. Â There were jalapenos and a couple different shades of chips. Â It just didn't pop like I hoped it would. Â The jalapenos weren't spicy to me and there weren't enough of them. Â I found them unfavorable compared to a place like the Lowbrow. Â
We waited a while for our dinners to come out and it was possibly because we all ordered rather disparate items. Â That gave us time to appreciate the truly eclectic nature of the place. Â There are photos on the wall for sale, garments for sale, a mammoth and diverse menu, a bakery, just all kinds of stuff mixed together somewhat incongruously. Â But it works.
When the food came out I was happy. Â I got the brisket sandwich with the kim chee on it. Â The sandwich is reasonably priced and was quite filling. Â The bread was awesome and the brisket lovely. Â I wasn't sure if I'd like kim chee on a sandwich, but it was pretty refreshing with a snap to it and spiced up the sandwich considerably. Â I liked it quite a bit.
My companions enjoyed their tacos and noodles. Â I would like to come back to try more of the menu. Â I got a red velvet cupcake to go and it was tasty as a late-night treat. Â As long as you don't order a million things, 3 Tiers is affordable. Â You could make it a special-occasion place or just otherwise do it with a budget figure in mind. Â It's kinda spendy, but it's pretty good quality stuff. Â I, for one, am happy that there's another decent restaurant option in Nokomis because there's a TON of mediocre crap in the area.
At a sushi place, it's all about the rice. You go Italian, it's about the pasta. So it makes sense if you go to a bakery, the bread has to be a show stopper. And that's exactly what you'll find at 3 Tiers - Show Stopping Bread!
I ordered the beef brisket w/ Kimchi sandwich. Sometimes you pay $10 for a sandwich you could have made at home. Not today! I literally gasped when I first caught sight of this creation that cost me whopping $7.
Postured stag on the plate, I could feel my stomach crawl and hide upon first sight of its soon to be afternoon project. The center goods (meat & kimchi) were several inches thick and firmly pressed between moist and flaky bread. Essentially, I was about to eat a croissant stuffed with deliciousness. Heaven!
The menu reflects the impression one would get from walking in the front door. Initially, a patron could be a bit confused a as you're greeted with a modern sitting wine bar affixed to a genuine 1940s style bakery case and cash register.
The food seemingly as eclectic as the aesthetics of the building. Banh mi, homemade kimchee, ramen, salads, fish tacos, red velvet cupcakes?! Whoa.
Even though the choices and aethetics don't really sound like they sense, they actually work in harmony to make this place delightful.
The food is quality, fresh and honors the different tastes of each of the cultures that 3 Tiers draws from to create their menu.
I met friends who live in the neighborhood for dinner here. I was pleasantly surprised... When I pulled up I was concerned that it was a bakery with tables- it sure wasn't. It was a cute atmosphere - small and intimate with friendly staff. The food was delicious and very affordable (I had gnocchi for $12!).
I liked it so much (plus who doesn't love supporting local businesses) I bought a gift card for my in-laws!
3 Tiers is a neighborhood GEM. Â I love that I can walk to this place for Sunday brunch and it is not crowded - just nice/quaint/good selection. Â I love their desserts/wine/quiche so far the best! Â Â They have an amazing chef and you can eat here very healthy or very non-healthy - your choice!
Review Source:Stopped by 3 Tiers while visiting my brother and was very much satisfied with this new little bakery. Friendly staff, nice ambiance, and the food is great. I have yet to try any of their soups or quiches, but I can attest that the veggie sandwich is delicious, as is the italien sandwich. And the pumpkin bar was amazing, perfectly spiced, moist, and with a fabulous cream cheese frosting.
Check it out if you're in the neighborhood!
When I feel that I have a bit of exchange change in my pocket I like to visit 3 Tiers. Â I agree it is a bit spendy but I welcome it to my 'hood and it being another drop in spot.
Today I had a sandwich which I found incredibly spicy.... then I lifted the bread and realized I had eaten the jalapenos! After removing them I completely enjoyed my vegan sandwich! Â
I LOVE the bread more than baker's wife's bread! Â
The pastries here are delectable.
We went for dinner once last week and again tonight. Everything has been wonderful. We've ordered:
ASIAN SALAD - long rice noodles (like spaghetti) mixed with very fresh veggies including bean sprouts, pea pods, carrots, cilantro, bok choi and a nice (and spicy) vinaigrette. We ate this on a very hot day and it was perfect. $10.
BBQ RIBS, MASA CAKES WITH SALSA VERDE, AND BLACK BEANS - the ribs were really juicy and flavorful. The smoke was nice, in fact, the fat tasted like barely cooked bacon fat, how can you go wrong with that? My husband liked the ribs too, but not as much as me. The masa cakes were crunchy on the bottom and soft and chewy on the top with that wonderful corn flavor coming through. The salsa verde tasted fresh made and had a nice spice. The black beans were thick (not soupy) but otherwise fairly generic. $10.
FLATBREAD PIZZA W/ BRISKET, BBQ SAUCE, KIM CHEE, BLUE CHEESE - this was very spicy, but really nice. The sweetness of the bar-b-que sauce and the creaminess of the blue cheese cut the heat well. The kim chee added a very nice crunchiness. I guess the brisket was a bit lost, but so what. This was unusual and quite good. $10.
VEGAN BAHN MI - The pate was made from mushrooms (not sure the kind) and was rich and creamy. It included all the traditional fixings including carrots, cucumbers, cilantro and of course spicy pepper. I believe it was a serrano which caused my husband to order and down two beers to cut the heat. $5.75.
KEY LIME PIE - Easily the best key lime pie I've had. It was appropriately tart (i.e. they didn't over sugar it.) The whipped cream topping was delicious. Normally whipped cream is light and fluffy and instead this was thick and creamy, which was a great option.
POT DE CREME PIE - like a mouse only much thicker and with more intense chocolate.
LEMON BAR - This had a metallic taste, which I think is typical for lemon curd, but it was not my favorite.
WINE/BEER: The wine list is good with about 10 by-the-glass options for both red and white. A number of the wines are on tap, which is really great because the wine comes out at the proper temperature and is never stale. $5.50-$11 They have four beers on tap: summer wheat, Pilsner, IPA and porter. Served in a chilled glass. $5.
SERVICE: Both times we went the service was spot on. A friendly waitress served us and when it got busy the owner, Brian, stepped in to serve drinks.
SUMMARY: The atmosphere is very relaxed (you can comfortably dine in shorts). And with low prices on entrees, this is a really, really, nice alternative to the neighboring restaurant Al Vento (which is also fabulous, but more formal and much more expensive.)
After Scandia closed, I switched back to Wuollet's. Â I decided for the Mother's Day/Birthdays/Anniversary combination cake, I would support a local vendor and order from 3 Tiers. Â Big Mistake. Â I called and ordered a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and masses of buttercream roses. Â What I got was a chocolate cake with white frosting and not one rose. Â The side of the cake was covered with crushed nuts. Â I hate nuts! Â When I told them that wasn't what I ordered, they offered to let me wait longer while they redid it. Â Surprisingly, I had other things to do than wait. Â I needed the cake so I went ahead and took it. Â We had it the next day. Â The cake wasn't terrible, but the frosting tasted very lardy. Â AND IT HAD LOTS OF NUTS! Â Typically, we argue over who gets the leftover cake; this time it was "you take it, no you take it." Â I expect a lot more for $42. Â It wasn't any better than what I could have picked up at Costco. :(
UPDATE:
Called a couple of days later to make a formal complaint. Â The only acknowledgment of error that was made was with regard to the chocolate frosting. Â When questioned about the buttercream roses that were ordered and missing from cake we were informed that's the type of bakery they are and they don't make that kind of cake. Â When asked about the crushed nuts that were put on the cake without being requested we were told "that's the kind of bakery we are." Â If that is the kind of bakery they are, when an order is called in that they won't fill, they need to tell the customer so the CUSTOMER can decide if they still want a cake. Â I do not appreciate going to pick up the cake they decided to make instead of the cake that I ordered. Â Oh, and they aren't giving me back any money, but I am welcome to come in for some free pastries.
If this was the last bakery in Minnesota, I would drive to Canada/Wisconsin/Iowa/Patagonia before giving 3 Tiers my custom.
They should be called 3 Tears because it was so bad it makes me want to cry.
This place is too cute! I went with my SO and we each got some coffee, black bean soup, and a red velvet cupcake.
The soup was delicious, the service incredibly friendly, and the coffee was served incredibly hot which I love.
The day I went in they didn't really have much as far as breakfast pastries go, it was almost all truffles, cupcakes, and petit fours. The reason I took one star off is because my cupcake was really very dry, really crumbly. If I'm paying $3.00 for a simple, tiny cupcake, it had better be moist and delicious.
All in all this place is super cute, and I will be back. I just cannot make it my morning ritual. ;o)
I hired 3 Tiers to create a mini-dessert buffet for my company's Christmas Party last week. They did a fantastic job and I will hire them again next year. The desserts were as delicious as they were beautiful. I will be returning as a regular customer as will many of my co-workers.
Cheers to 3 Tiers!
A previous review mentions the recession.Give me a break!!! People don't open their own businesses to be recession friendly. That was one of the dumbest reviews I've ever read on Yelp. This bakery is not a national franchise like Dunkin Donuts. If you want to save a buck, pick up a bag of Chips Ahoy at Cub.
3 Tiers Cakes is bright and cheery, with perky staff to match. They are clearly focused on presenting quality and made-from-scratch products, which is a welcome change from the frozen pre-fab junk the previous tenant offered.
Stopped in for lunch. Â Wanted to try the Italian Wedding soup- with homemade meatballs- but went with their homemade Stromboli instead, Â plus a great cup of their house blend coffee to go. Â A decent cup of coffee in this 'hood is extremely rare- this cup kicked ass! Â Also stopped in a week later for a few fruit tartlets and red velvet cupcakes for a dinner party- my guests were thoroughly impressed. Â
Since they just opened (it's barely been a month), their selections are naturally limited to the best and the brightest. Â The owner tells me she has many more treats up her sleeve. Â Baking is a craft that takes time and patience, and I appreciate that rather than schlepp out some crappy donuts to make a quick buck, she's focusing on quality pastries and cakes.
It's just this gal and her husband (who still works his other full time job) running this place. Â Where they get that energy I'll always wonder...maybe fueled by cupcakes??? (tshirt slogan!!!)
If the owner reads this, please figure out a way to sell that stamina! Â In the meantime, keep on baking them tasty cakes! Â Can't wait to try the soup.
This place is obviously not aware of the ongoing recession in the country. And it doesn't respond well to ANY criticism, so you'll see lots of sudden 5 star reviews planted. I see what this place is trying to do. But not in this hood. Although a nice one, it's not rich. And I'll bet Al Vento isn't known for its walk in traffic. It's so nice inside, what they offer is limited. Some people are convinced that for real quality you have to spend a lot and it doesn't matter if you get your moneys worth. Appearance is everything. I had a lemon bar cut so that it fits in a childs palm. Better at D'Amico and Son. A decent cream puff, bigger and better at Kramerczuk's. I don't think customers should have to pay for your remodeling job. The baked goods are good here, you're just gonna damn well pay for it. And if only an uncultured clod can't appreciate it, like my critics of Forepaugh's, tell that bullshit to the tourists. If you want a real bakery  in Nokomis go to A Baker's Wife.
Review Source:I know, I know I should just be happy that there's another Bakery in the place of The (Dirty) Scadia Bakery, right??? Well, I thought soo at first too. The first week I tried to go there for work goodies... they weren't open in the morning. I heard that they were going to start opening early, so I finally caught the early opening, to find a less than adequate selection of pastries. Some truffles were displayed, and some cinnamon rolls, but MY co-Workers want some handmade elephant ears and bear Claws for treats in the morning... who am I to judge???
Great Coffee, less than adequate selection for the average "Joe", and kind of spendy... 6 rolls, and a coffee for $22??????
