First off, a lot of people are saying "kid-friendly bar." Â Why the Hell are you looking for a kid-friendly bar? Â Stop taking your kids to bars! Â
Second and it should be mentioned shortly into a review as I'm sure most people don't read the long-winded reviews: Â NO LIQUOR. Â They do not have a liquor license. Â Now they've been saying for two years they'll get one soon but they still don't have one. Â I've talked to the employees and they acknowledge that hurts their business. Â People come for one drink and leave. Â Also, a lot of girls don't drink beer. Â You need girls in your bar to have a successful bar.
As for the decor: Â It's awesome. Â Some people complain about that? Â It's a hippy rock and soul 60's-70's vibe. Â I think it's awesome. Â If you love rock and roll and rock and roll history, you'll dig the atmosphere.
They have a small tap selection but a huge bottled and can selection. Â This place is not pretentious. Â The food is very good. Â Not great, but good. Â Their gumbo and cornbread is very nice. Â I've had nachos and they're decent.
The service is good. Â I think a place like 909 might give you a different experience from visit to visit with service. Â But you don't have rude servers.
Small seating. Â Tiny long building. Â Outside seating for smoking and you can sit out there with your dog.
The music venue in back is cool. Â Warning, Â your cell phone may not work in the back. Â Bad reception. Â Just something I noticed.
They have good music from bands to solo performers to open mics. Â They stop most music pretty early as they have neighbors who complain. Â Really? Â Why rent a place next to a bar if you have issues with noise?
There is only one tiny unisex bathroom. Â It is small.
The 909 is a great place to stop in for a beer or two. Â Catch a live act. Â The setting is very intimate and the bar is quaint. Â Go check it out. Â I love small bars over corporate bars like Cap Ale a few doors down. Â I would love to see 909 make it.
This place is a relaxed spot to grab a beer, but it offers nothing special in terms of beer selection, pricing or vibe - at least for me. It's a 70's vibe, so it feels a little like a time capsule, but I was underwhelmed overall. The service was great and we were able to get a booth and hear each other speak.
Review Source:A funky beer bar in downtown F'burg.
Stopped in on a Wed evening enroute from Richmond to NoVa.
Me & mi hijo were looking for some dinner and a cold beer.
They have a great beer menu and Thirsty Thursday specials.
We had the Crab dip which was tasty but not enough for two people.
I had the chicken & chorizo quesedillas which were tasty, mi hijo had the pineapple pizza. We both thought it was OK but nothing too special.
If you like 70's music memorabilia, you will like this place.
Old pics of Bob Dylan, Tom Pettty, The Stones, The Beatles...and...well...you get the idea.
Thursday is open mic night...we didn't stay around for the music but in the back there is a small stage with some comfortable looking couches.
I wondered in here because I needed a beer, and all the others bars my portable cyber phone suggested was restaurants. Not what I was looking for.. so I wondered in to 909.
The decor will not win any prices, but as a music fan I did appreciate the eclectic collection of photos/poster from yore. The bartender was a rookie, but super nice and helped me in my selection of beers that I have never seen before. I tried some brew from far and near and Jamaica. I even liked they're swayed glasses I got my beer in.
I can only speak of how I felt the place was, even if I never seen action packed... I still enjoyed my cups of beer. If I need to say something that worries me, is that if this place was packed, and we all had only one claustrophobic bathroom to share - I would have to take a leak, and then drink my next beer in line... if you catch my drift.
If I ever come back to Fredericksburg - I will come back to 909.
.. und das ist nach der kritiker.
I have to say, this place was not what I was hoping for. It seems like they had it all wrong from the get-go but I've been called a bar snob and I am going to tell it like it is.
So, it was a Saturday afternoon and we were thirsty! We headed to the CAH two doors down and it was packed with no seat to be found. We noticed the 909 Saloon as we were going to the other bar so we said, hey why not? lets go try this place out. Â There were two tables out front with patrons occupying them so we went inside to take a seat at the bar, which was empty. There were a few tables inside by the bar and I noticed at least one was occupied with a party of three and it looked like the waitress/bartender was talking to them. We took a seat at the bar, which had someone's dirty bowl and empty beer sitting at it. The back room had a fair amount of people standing around a guy playing a guitar. The music was cool and the decor was a little too 60s/70s overload. I understood what they were trying for but it was a weak representation of what good bar decor can be. The lighting was overwhelming (BRIGHT). The waitress/bartender came over to us and asked if we needed menus. Â Yes, please. There was a guy that had been standing waiting to pay his tab for a while and I think she finally took care of him. She still hadn't cleared the dirty stuff off of the bar. Â I'm taking all of this in as I'm checking out the beer menu. I liked the selections, I just never got a chance to place an order. The poor girl needed some help and she told us she was a little swamped (the bar was empty, but okay). We were also a party of three and my one friend ordered a bottled beer from the lady, immediately. My bf ordered a draft and I didn't make a decision before a guy came up to her and interrupted us - he wanted to know where his chili was and if it was coming out. She told him that of course it was coming, but everything was made from scratch so it takes a while and it would be ready when it was ready. I guess that was good enough for him because he walked away. I'm thinking, they make the chili per order? What on earth? Now at this point we have been in the bar for a good 10 minutes; watching the lady take care of the table that was already in there and checking out the guy who left the dirty stuff on the bar. She finally cleared that off the bar and apologized that she was backed up. I was a little worried because I didn't see much going on and she still didn't give anyone a drink in my party (I guess I am to blame for that because I couldn't make up my mind on a drink)!? Â Maybe so, but that is bad bartending because she could have had both of their drinks already served and she would have hooked us. Another guy comes up to the bar and he only wants a drink he tells her. Â He asks her what is on tap and she says, oh man you're going to really test my memory! SO he gets up out of his seat to walk in front of the taps and take a look after she fumbles a few of the choices. He picks one and she starts to pour two short glasses of the stuff (which was mostly head) and then she only pours a taste-size amount into the two glasses and takes them to the table she was talking with over 10 minutes ago, when we walked in. So at this point, three people at the bar have ordered drinks and not one of them had been started or served. I knew what I wanted to order but I didn't get the chance because then two more guys came in to sit at the bar and they wanted menus so she gave them their menus and I just got up and walked out because I didn't understand why she was waiting to give everyone their drinks!
Maybe she was new at this and maybe it WAS swamped only seconds before we arrived but what I experienced was really poor bartending. Unfortunately I can't give any more than two stars and that is being nice because I didn't even really like the atmosphere. Â I'm sorry! You guys have to get more help on the floor on a Saturday afternoon, especially when a street fair is going on and people are out and about. Â Plan better and please teach your bartenders/waitresses they can 'hook' a customer if they get those beers served WAY faster. I don't think I can try this place again because that was such a frustrating experience. We were in there at least 15 minutes, watched three beers get ordered and saw her do nothing but pour two taste-glasses and hand out menus. Â As we were leaving the bar and walking past the table she took the beer samples to, someone was complaining of the beer tasting 'flat'. Good luck.
Was surprised at how delicious the food was! I got the tomato and avocado grilled cheese and it was sublime. The 3 bean salad was also very good (and so different!). I felt a little out of place with all the beer options since I'm not a beer drinker (some cocktail options would have been nice, they could be chill hippie themed or whatever). It's also a pretty small sitting area, so at busier times I don't think there'd be much room. But the food is great and I love the vibe so we'll definitely be back.
Review Source:Definitely the most character of any bar in Fredericksburg. The place is covered in 60s/70s hippie paraphernalia, from posters of Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia to a statue of the Buddha. It's basically like you took all of the stuff from a stoner hippie's bedroom wall and transported it into a bar. There's also a sweet scavenger hunt involving the stuff which is pretty challenging - and a great way to start conversation with that cute girl/guy also working on it. And I'm pretty sure you get some amount of discout (not sure how much) for finishing.
It's not a huge bar and it gets kind of narrow up by the serving area, but there are some booths up front and an area in the back where they have local bands a lot of the time.
Even though there are only six taps, there's always something I've never tried before when I'm in town. Then obviously bottled and canned beers in addition. There's no liquor, which is somewhat of a bummer, but I've heard they're working on getting a liquor license, which would take this place to the next level.
Bar staff is generally pretty nice and the crowd isn't just a bunch of nutjobs trying to get hammered. They're usually down the street taking shots at Cap Ale House. Overall, I'd highly recommend it if you're looking to grab a beer or three downtown in a place with an interesting and relatively relaxed vibe.
I think the best way to describe this place is "suprising," but in a good way.
I had been next door at Cap Ale House enjoying good beer. I wanted to find a place more lowkey and I thought I would have to sacrifice quality beer to find such a place.
Boy, was I wrong.
The 909 Saloon has a small, but tasty selection of draft beers. The variety of bottled beers is much more diverse than what one one would expect of a small, local pub.
This place is certainly low-key. Â But, in my mind, its also perfect. The bar staff are welcoming, the selection of beer is adaquate, and the prices are right.
I totally enjoyed my experience here. Â Great environment. Recommended!
The beer is good but the obnoxiously drunk moron at the bar with the loud foul language ran most people out of the place. Â When we left at 6 pm there was only the drunk left in there. Â The kid behind the bar was trying hard and very nice but way out of his depth. Â Properly managed, this place could be fantastic. Â For now its a miss for sure.
Review Source:Ok I was just passing by and saw the place and had to stop for a beer. There was maybe 5 other people in the whole joint besides me and my friend. The beer selection wasn't bad. They had Sierra Nev PA and a Rastifari Rye that was great. I loved the decor, mostly Beatles and Stones posters and album covers, Very friendly barkeep. I'll be back when there's a band.
Review Source:my friend and I (from out of town) dropped in on a friday night. Â the bar wasn't exactly jumpin', infact it was just us and a few other people in the whole place. Â in the back a DJ was setting up with the requisite GF? dancing.
Now, let's talk....
The decor is hard to miss - it's like a teenager who just discovered the late 60's and the bar is their bedroom. Â Seemed ok vibe wise I guess - if drinking in a Spencer's Gifts is your bag. Â Now don't get me wrong - I pretty much LOVE everything they had up, from the clock set on 4:20, to all the Beatles, Stones, Marley, etcc.. pics, even the Packers stuff. Â
Beer selection was brief, but had some choices off the beaten path. Â Â
As we sat drinking out of our 'trippy' beer glasses opposite the image shifting Yellow Submarine poster, we had a breakthrough, bro.
As my friend later dubbed it - Â the bar that tried too hard
Kid-friendly bar (at least, before 8pm).
Yeah, I know the phrase "kid-friendly bar" sounds strange. Â I was a skeptic, too. Â But last Saturday from 4-6pm one of my super-mother friends rounded up a large group of us with children under the age of 8 and we all converged on the 909 Saloon to listen to the live band.
We piled into the five tables at the front of the restaurant, ordered beer and assorted food items (nachos, pizza, hot dogs, salad, etc.) and waited for the band to set up. Â Our server was exceptionally patient and did a splendid job of keeping our checks straight, no mean feat with 5 families and 9 children sitting intermingled. Â As we waited, we chatted about the amazing wall-decorations -- many of which were framed album covers -- that reflected the saloon's soulful theme of classic rock music. Â
The band was terrific. Â Called "Harry, Larry, and Buck", they play every-other Saturday from 4-6pm. Â They are a unique band composed of a xylophone, ukulele, and bass, and they played music that I would describe as a cross between jazz and swing, including the Jungle Book song: I Want to Be Like You. Â
I confess that I didn't eat anything, so I can't comment on the food. Â However, one of the other adults ordered a house salad that included black beans and corn, which I'm looking forward to trying next time we go out. Â The waiter had the kitchen put a less-spicy chilli topping on the nachos so that the young ones wouldn't be put-off. Â (Just ask for the chilli that they put on the chilli dogs.)
Who would have thought that a saloon could be family-friendly? Â Terrific live music in a non-smoking bar with my kids. Â 909 Saloon certainly earns its fifth star for achieving the unbelievable.
