I went with a friend and we were the only ones there on a Saturday (upstairs) a busy tourist day to say the least , Asked for chips and salsa and was told there are $5 for them , Really? Okay I got the chips and salsa and the salsa was straight from a bottle, The pico de gallo was pretty good.
Okay onto the food , I ordered a $13 burrito that was too small for the price and NO sides included, the filling was okay but it was lukewarm at best and covered in canned queso cheese(you can tell)
My friend ordered the combination taco plate:two tacos, one with ground beef and one with chicken . They came in preformed taco shells you can buy off the shelf at any store. The fillings were abysmal and hardly any food in them , a scoop of almost cold rice and canned black beans . all for $9
I hear the drinks are good but stay away from the food , this place fails on EVERY level in that department .
Oh and noticed the mens bathroom looked like a bathroom from a rest area , broken walls , no paper towels .Also they need to dust their ceiling fans , At least a 1/4 inch of dust on them , when you are the only people in a place you tend to notice details especially after paying a princely sum for crappy food.
We actually ate here. First mistake. We aren't from Portland, but the boy could have sworn his friend from Portland recommended the place (we later found out that was NOT true).
Anyway, the food was... food. The dining room was empty except for staff from the other part of the restaurant who kept coming over to drink at the bar. Also, it's weird for me when entrees at Mexican restaurants don't come with rice and beans. Just me?
I gave this two starts because there is only one good place in the state of Maine for Mexican food. Â If you don't understand this, look at a map and see how far north you are in Maine. Â Sorry for the reality check.
The only comment I have about the food is this: the salsa is Pace Picante from a jar. Â I am not kidding you. Â Enough said.
The food is decent. Â On one occasion I visited with a group of people but after 15 minutes still hadn't been visited by a server even to order drinks and so we just left.
As a bar it's great. Â It's a dive bar in the best sense. Â The drinks are cheap and it draws a fun crowd despite its proximity to the clubs on Wharf St.
Cheap drinks. The food is mediocre at best. Actually, its really not good. I could make better at home, and they even charge you for extras like tomato and lettuce. Lame, so I stick to downstairs. The bar has pool tables, Biergarten (with a heated smoking area in winter), and a charming dive atmosphere.
Review Source:I returned to Amigos to give it another shot, and I was more impressed this time than the last time, though not enough to upgrade it to four stars. It's a solid meal, I'll keep coming back, but I just can't give myself to give it a better than "decent" rating. Decent isn't bad, it's just not special to me :)
I'm still comparing everything to Cilantro in New York City, but hey, I'm not in New York anymore, so let's be real.
The nachos are still good, and I tried a salsa picante this time around instead of their (kind of watery) hot sauce. Was much better! Skipped the cheesy burrito, had a fajita, was very full and happy by the end of the meal. No complaints, service was fine, etc etc.
you know what, i liked this place. i only went for beers on a saturday night but they had a decent selection of stuff on tap for comparable prices. the crowd was very friendly, inside and outside. the bathroom stalls kept me super amused. in one stall someone wrote some diatribe with incorrect grammar, and someone else came along, "corrected" mistakes, then wrote "learn how to wight a sentance retard" in large letters. fantastic. i took a picture for lifelong remembrance.
Review Source:Let me start by saying that the bar downstairs is pretty cool. Great vibe, lots of pool tables and cool locals (21-35 yo). The food upstairs is..um...meh. I can live off Mexican food if its done right. This was just Okay. I had the chicken burrito topped with Tomatillo sauce. It was seriously lacking in flavor. I had to get a side of guac and sour creme to dress it up. My friend had the Enchilada/burrito combo. The black beans, um, looked like, um... gnarly. The enchilada looked good, it was served with beans and rice, but then the burrito was completely DRY on a separate little place all by itself. It looked a little sad. Not to mention that he had to use almost the whole bottle of what looked like a homemade hot sauce to boost the flavor.
The prices are decent, the service was okay. I know that he was busy, so I will tread lightly there.
Bottom line, this place is good  for drinking DOWNSTAIRS and that's about it.
Everything's served in a pint glass, which means pretty much everything is a double. Â I forget this fact absolutely every single eff'ing time I end up here. Â And that's pretty much what I do... end my night here.
Chalk up another point to my old nemesis... I don't remember much of anything that night... bastard.
Oh, wait... they have food here?
mexican food is yummy, especially from this place! They give you free chips and good salsa when you first enter. Their drinks and food are cheap, really cheap, and the people who work there are super nice.
The menu is good for die hard Mexican fans or the American mexican food lovers. They have a good selection of stuff for meat eaters as well as vegetarians and seafood freaks. My personal favorite is the fish taco, best I have ever had.
great juke box and the bartenders play good music too.
yum yum yum I love this place!
My favorite bar/hangout of all time.
AHHmigo's is more like it. When I visit Portland, this is really the only place I feel like going aside from the Downtown Lounge.
Everywhere else (for drinking) is like being at a fraternity party (Gritty's, Bullfeeney's). Or, people they're pretending they're like... I don't even know, at the wine bar.
Amigo's is a relaxed atmosphere, with pool tables, a jukebox, a digital bar games machine, and dartboards.
The bartenders are nice and funny, and the drinks are CHEAP! Also, they come in a pint glass. A pitcher of PBR (an excellent choice at Amigo's) is $8, I think. Stick a straw in it!
Also, there's a neat little smoking area/patio out back, where there are bands during the summer, and heaters in the winter! You can also go upstairs for food and a quiet drink, which I have never done.
Getting kicked out of or not let into Amigo's is a sign you need to ease up in general.
The place has a great feel and I encourage people who are looking for a relaxed atmosphere to check it out.
Happy hour is from 4-8pm and brings you $2.75 Maine beers and $3 mixed drinks which they make in...wait for it... pint glasses.
