The Mac 'n' Chz with lobster... Wow. Restaurant owner was personable and informative of the Portland area which highly impressed me. My daughter loved hearing about the different variety of colored lobsters. Who knew? Definite return customer next time I am in the harbor.

Oh Andy's. I've been here several times for a quick bite before catching the ferry to the island and have been consistently disappointed. The prices are too high and the portions are too small. The service is absolutely horrendous. Every time I have come here it has taken 40-45 minutes to get simple things like a lobster roll or hamburger that come with about 5 French fries and a lot of bad attitude from the wait staff. My most recent experience was the worst with the food taking close to an hour to arrive and a server who seemed to be terribly inconvenienced by our presence. This place will do much better with an expeditious kitchen and positive staff that caters to island visitors and commuters who are at the mercy of a boat schedule. I'll stick to coming here only to drink in the off season when Shipyard Pumpkin draft is $2.00. Otherwise, there are many other places right on Commercial Street with fair prices, fair portions and better service.

Great lobster bisque. Good local beer selection. I had one of the local blueberry beers. Lobster roll was really disappointing. It was my first meal in ME and was VERY light on the lobster. If I had to order again I guess I'd go with their special that was a lobster and avocado roll and probably much more filling. I had much more filling rolls at other places in ME.. It was a fun location right in old port near the water.. But no water views.
Overall, it was fine, but I'd seek out another place on my next trip.

Adela & Jude are regular performers up here at Andy's Old Port Pub - the people who own it are first class.  The food is great ( not sure who the person is who gave one star - but lots of time, competition trolls do... just sayin.) -   We're biased, since we play music here - every few months - May 11th is our next date - hint hint ) --

We'll keep coming back to Portland for a fine time here at Andy's!

Yelp really led us astray on this one. For some reason, this place has decent reviews, but the food here was pretty awful on the night we went.  If it wasn't for the cozy, laid back environment and friendly service I would have given 1 star because the food really sucked.

I started with a cup of the clam chowder. I'm no expert, but I thought chowder was supposed to be thick and creamy. This was watery and had some weird flavors in it. The potatoes were not cooked enough so they were hard, but at least there were plenty of clams.  For my entree I had the crab cake burger, which was the size of something you'd expect for a child's meal. Actually, the salad (which they charged me $1 for without telling me) that I got as my side was bigger than the sandwich. I ordered the salad because the other options were non-homemade coleslaw or fries.  This place boasts fresh, homemade food so why was I going to eat packaged coleslaw or frozen fries?  My wife had the lobster bruschetta, which looked like it was made by a 4 year old throwing a bunch of stuff on the plate. At least they threw some lettuce on there to make it look pretty. The lobster did not taste fresh and there was not much of it. Plus, the bread wasn't even toasted. Thankfully I had a beer with dinner to fill me up because this was not enough food.

This is a nice spot for some drinks and live music, but do not under any circumstances order the food. It is disgraceful. Needless to say, we will never visit this place again.

We have visited Andy's several times recently. It is a great pub-type restaurant located near the waterfront. we regularly eat out in Portland and Andy's has become one of our real favorites. The service is excellent. The waitresses are friendly professional, efficient. The baked scallops are wonderful. They are simply baked with a light coating of breadcrumbs and crumbled bacon. They are without a doubt the freshest scallops I have ever tasted. Thee fried items are pan-fried, rather than deep-fried and you taste the seafood, rather than the batter. Although you come to Portland for seafood, non-seafood items are equally good. The patty melt I had was delicious.
Andy's is a friendly, comfortable and reasonably-priced place to eat.

Stopped in for lunch at Andy's Old Port Pub after walking into a non-touristy pub that we were promptly stared out of. Really great food, and really great beer. I had a crab cake burger with bacon, spinach, and chipotle mayo on a wheat bun, with coleslaw ($8.50). My bf had a patty melt on marbled rye with an aioli, provolone, and carmelized onions - w/ fries ($11). Both were incredibly good. Beers (only $4!) were Allagash white w/ lemon, and a Shipyard Seasonal Pumpkin Ale in a pint glass rimmed with sugar & pumpkin-pie spice. That was insane. I'll be decorating all of my beers from now on!

Lots of friendly regulars/locals that seemed to be enjoying themselves. I would be, too, if I could come here everyday! In a perfect location; wish we had more places like this in San Francisco. If I'm ever back in Portland, ME, I'll be back at Andy's Pub.

Commercial street has some truly awful tourist traps.  Andy's is not.  Great food. Reasonable prices.  Outstanding service.  Right near the ferry for those of us who live on the islands.

I was planning my daughters 21st birthday party in Maine for 16 people. I am new to the area and chose Andy's online. I called and made a reservation because of the party size. The next day i received a phone call from Jennifer she was so nice and helpful suggesting a back room for our group and asking what the event was and asking my daughters name. When we arrived she had decorated the room with balloons and birthday signs and even a special birthday glass for my daughter. She called the day of the party to make sure we were all set i was running around like crazy to get thing ready so she even went and picked up the cake for me !!!! The food was wonderful the drinks were cold and the service was beyond all of my expectoration's I can not thank Jennifer and the staff enough for making my daughter's 21st so special. We will be back again and again and again !!!!!

My husband and I wandered into this unassuming bar for a late dinner on a Thursday night. We'd spent the week trying out various restaurants on Commercial, Andy's would be our last Maine dinner of our honeymoon.

We sat at the bar and noticed a 2 man guitar band was set up at the front of the place. They started a Grateful Dead cover as I slipped off to the restroom asking my husband to surprise me with a local beer. When I came back I saw the bartender, a friendly woman, had set me up with two shots - they weren't sure which beer I'd prefer. I chose the Shipyard. We ordered an app of fried clams & oysters, served with red pepper aioli sauce. They were tasty, the oysters huge.

For dinner my husband had a lobster roll. The bun was perfectly toasted and it was the first roll all week to be served with melted butter (as opposed to mayo). He had his choice of sides (chips or cole slaw), he chose chips. I had the blackened haddock which was very good, perfectly cooked and topped with an amazing black bean relish.

I asked the barmaid for another pint of beer, this time simply asking for "the most popular local", she brought me a Geary's; definitely worthy of its popularity. For dessert we shared a brownie sundae - the brownie was warm but not too hot and a good gooey texture, they were generous with the whipped cream.

Andy's is a hidden gem, a good local place with great food nestled between bigger tourist traps with mediocre fare.

Alright, who's throwing around bad reviews of Andy's? C'mon, who are ya? This is definitely one of Portland's coziest pubs, and that's saying something. You can count on awesome waitstaff that will bend over backwards for you if you're polite (disclaimer: my version of awesome waitstaff also includes those who won't hesitate to call you a "fancy pants" if you ask if the salad dressing is made in-house), always interesting music in the evenings, the owners are the nicest people in the world, and everything I've ever had to eat was delicious (especially partial to that insanely good steak & cheese pizza), but go in knowing it's a pub, not a reservations-required restaurant.

There's also a really strong connection to the islanders and fishermen (notice the photos on the wall), so you will get a drunk, rowdy bunch in here every once in a while, but it's the working waterfront...don't you wan't "authentic"? Have a couple yourself and you'll be making friends and clapping to the tunes before you know it.

    3. Menu - star
    4. Service - star
    5. Comfort - star

This is my kind of place.

    1. The location was ideal. Step outside and whabam, there's the ocean. It's along beautiful Commercial Street and

    2. Wow, the food was good. Everything had an incredibly homemade taste, something you don't see often. Going with a group, here's what we got:

    - Clam Chowder: Wow, this was good clam chowder. Fresh, actually tasted of clams, not overly thick. Embezzled with some nice italian herbs and spices for a twist, and it worked well. Served with standard oyster crackers. Not your typical thick, gray, droopy New England clam chowder loaded with hunks of mushy potatoes, but trust me - this is a good, hearty bowl of soup. In fact, it's one of the best.

    - Fried Clams: Hands-down BEST fried clams I've ever had. Everywhere I order fried clams, I end up consuming more batter than I do clam. This place dips the lightest possible coating of batter, but the golden-brown coating is OH so crunchy. The clams aren't even chewy like they are at your beachside fried food stand - these just melt in your mouth. They are so soft and juicy it's reminiscent of eating oysters. The clams were served in a small appetizer portion with tartar sauce as well as a homemade red pepper aioli, which complimented the clams with a perfectly light, cool, dip. It tastes like someone really went backstage, opened up a few clams, dipped them in batter and tossed them in a frying pot, they're that fresh and homemade-tasting.

    - Lobster melt: beautiful, generous chunks of fresh-tasting lobster meat served with avocados and tomatoes on a generous slice of toasted italian-style bread. Melted on top is a thin slice of swiss cheese. The flavors go together beautifully, and the dish is colorful and vibrant. It tastes like what it looks like, which for me is one of the signs of a good meal. A side of the best, crunchy cole slaw I've ever had, and one of the few I've ever had that didn't come in a little plastic dixie cup.

    3. Clean and simple menu serving comfortable American food. Lots of seafood options available, and some vegetarian options present. A whole, wide variety of hoppy beverages is served, so your beer belly won't go empty. Prices are reasonable. Portions are relatively small, but meals are hearty and you won't go hungry. This isn't the kind of place where you slap down a 20 and splurge yourself with fast-food style fried seafood.

    4. Service was great. Waitresses were warm and friendly, and the food came quickly.

    5. It's nice and cozy, and the place was very clean.

Horrible food, greasy crab cakes, atrocious chili, it tasted like it had been sitting in a plastic bin in the bottom of a freezer for ten years. No salt or pepper and mushy gross beans. Save your and get a bk burger. I would never return there. The only reason they can scrape by is the turn over from tourists who never return.

I just had a great bachlorette dinner at this place.  I live in Boston and my girlfriends took me to Portland, Maine for my bachelorette weekend and out to dinner at Andy's before heading out for the night.  This restaurant went all out to make us feel welcome and they were incredibly attentive, friendly, and hilarious.  We had amazing food and the atmosphere was great to get the night started. There was a wonderful live band (but not too loud, so we could all still talk) and our waiter was a blast. I definitely recommend Portland for this kind of girls weekend (it's a beautiful city and everyone is so friendly) and Andy's for any kind of celebration dinner. The local beers were fantastic and the atmosphere great - I can't wait to go back!

Stopped into Andy's for lunch on our way up to Bar Harbor.  We were hungry and craving fresh Maine seafood!  Great meal kept us full for the 3 hour journey.

My sister and I both ordered the lobster roll special and loved the avacado and shredded cheese on top, a nice twist to the classic sandwich.

Fish and chips - breaded and BAKED, not fried, but it tasted great.

Veggie Burger - not too bad at all, worth a try.

Didn't try an beers, but there's about 5 or 6 local brews on tap.

Blueberry pie a la mode for dessert was fresh out of the oven and amazinggg.

Nice little place with a decent amount of seating and attentive service.

Stopped in here on a whim with my two kids for a quick dinner and we were totally wowed!!  It's a great, casual bar feel with several local beers on tap.  We played pool in the back room (for $1) and had an amazing dinner.  The service was fantastic and the food was even better.  No pre-mixed, mostly-mayo lobster rolls here!  The made-to-order lobster club sandwich (with bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado) was one of the best meals I've ever had.  And yes, I know it's only a sandwich, but so purely simple and delicious.  Highly recommended!

This was the first stop of my Portland weekend beer and food extravaganza tour! We walked around trying to find a late night spot to eat some yummy seafood. After perusing a few menus, we came acroos Andy's by the sound of a guitar solo. The menu looked promsing so we decided that this was the spot for us! I ordered a lobster blt... lobster is necessary when in maine, right? OMG did it hit the spot! So satisifying and delicious, even though it required a little extra smear of mayo. They also had a great selection of local beers for us to sample to start our tour. Overall a successful evening.

you know, it seems as tho other people like Andy's just fine.  my experience here was bad, tho, and i won't be returning.

i stopped in a couple weeks ago on the early side of dinner time.  i found a table, and waited and waited for the server.  after more than 10 minutes, the server finally appeared and, rather than washing down our dirty table, fumbled with a piece of lettuce that was there and tracked its accompanying salad dressing across the table.  the folks sitting behind us told her that they were still waiting for their check (it seemed like they had been waiting for some time).  so i left a tip and got out of there.  too many red flags for me to stick around.

I vacationed in Portland in July 2011. This review is long overdue.

    Ordered:
New England Clam Chowder - Large ~$6

I ordered to-go. I was craving some clam chowder but decided to try a new place downtown. The clam chowder was good but it was really small for a large size.  If it weren't for the friendly service, I wouldn't have given them a 4. My friend ordered a sandwich which was pretty good and I would probably order their sandwiches the next time I go here.

A perfectly decent spot.  I have the feeling if I lived in Portland that I would come here pretty regularly for drinks rather than for dinner--it has that cozy bar feeling that I love and lots of great local beers on tap, but the food was only average.

There were five of us cruising for dinner on the Friday of a holiday weekend, and most places we stopped by had waits that were longer than we wanted.  We stepped into Andy's and grabbed one of the many tables that was available.  The server came by quickly to take our drinks order, and then it took us some time to get ourselves together to order food.  I eventually went for the lobster roll (I hadn't been in New England in a while), which I consider to be risky, since every establishment has their own standards for what makes a good lobster roll. This one missed the mark a little.  Too much mayo for me (I scrapped a bunch off with my knife), and a greasy bun that was also flabby.  Sweet potato fries came out cold and overcooked (read: blackish) and service was friendly, folksy, and slow--there was some major downtime before ordering and receiving food.

Overall it was a fine meal, but nothing that blew my hair back, and there are so many other restaurants I'd want to try in Old Port before going back.

The specials menu indicated a fried clam plate, and made the outrageous claim "best you have ever had".  Never one to back down to a challenge, I tried it.

While their fried clams weren't necessarily the best, they rank highly, and I'd order them again.  This is a cool place in the Old Port - the walls are decorated with framed art by locals, many pieces are for sale, and it's definitely a locals-centric eatery.  But by no means is it unfriendly to us tourons - our bartender was friendly and joked with us all night, letting us play yahtzee freely, but demanding to be given 10% of the gambling take (note: no money exchanged hands).

One of the most interesting things about the Old Port that I learned from her was that establishments built in that part of town are not allowed to remodel, since each year the waterfront land on which the businesses sit sinks a couple of inches lower.  Engineers come through every year and tighten or replace bolts on load-bearing girders.  This was my explanation when I asked why the men's room at Andy's was the only public restroom I'd ever been in that had no sink.  Can't install one! Gotta use the one right outside the bathroom!

Funky.  I hope it doesn't disappear beneath the waves before I can have their fried clams again.

While on vacation in the adorable town of Portland I was yelping on my iPhone, trying to find somewhere to eat, and to get us out of the cold rain (in June ugh).

Anyway. This place had reviews that were as good as the place next door, but this place looked cleaner... but it was empty.

The service was attentive, but unpolished. I asked what a certain beer was like, and the answer I got was, "It's like, red sorta." Ummm. Great. I'll have that?

I ordered a lobster BLT. it sounded delicious, but I learned it's better in theory. It was prepared well, but the tomato and bacon over-powered the taste of the lobster.

The lobster stew wasn't much of a stew. It had chunks of lobster, but no potatoes or anything else. Shouldn't a stew have more of a medley of veggies? Some carrots would have been cute. Maybe some celery. No?

My boyfriend and I had recently moved to Boston, and decided to take an overnight jaunt to Portland. Never having been there, and totally throwing any sense of planning out the window, we booked a room in a teeny seaside motel in Old Orchard Beach and popped into town.

I insisted that I just wanted a simple, touristy lobster roll for dinner (or crabcakes, or chowder- something representative of where we were).

So after wandering by the water for a bit, I decided on Andy's at the  last minute. We stepped in, and before even sitting down, I got distracted and started staring at a map of Portland that was posted on the wall. One of the gentleman sitting at a table got up, greeted us, and then proceeded to give us a brief maritime history of Portland, the surrounding islands, and answered all my dumb touristy questions.

I knew I'd found the perfect place for dinner.

Like clockwork, I ordered the crab cakes, spicy chowder, and blueberry pie (when in Maine..). All of it was delicious! The crab cakes were exceptionally good- some of the best I'd ever had. We also had a beer & a root beer (delicious). It was so lovely, in fact, that we decided to come back for dinner later that day- and what a great decision this turned out to be. There was a bluegrass band set up in the front, and we proceeded to eat more delicious fresh seafood, drink beer, and listen to beautiful (and really well improvised!) bluegrass music. It made out tiny vacation perfect, and I'm really appreciative.

I stopped in here after walking around the downtown area in a fit of vacation photography.  The staff was very friendly, and the bartender answered many of my questions about the area.   So, I camped out for a while and drank the Shipyard Ale, which I enjoyed.  I also liked the fish chowder.

My favorite item, though, was the lobster roll.  I had them make one with lobster and bacon only.  I figured that this flavor combination was so obviously a good idea that it would be a very popular choice.  Not so; apparently I'm the only person who'd ever asked for lobster and bacon only.   Residents of Portland: you are missing out.  My lobster roll was delicious.   All of the goodness of lobster, the exceptional flavor complement of bacon, yet none of the distractions of lettuce or other plant items.

Anyway, I had a fun time hanging out at Andy's.   It was a great way to cap of the photography junket.

We were in Portland for my boyfriend's 10 year high school reunion, and stopped in Andy's to continue the reminiscing with some other classmates of his.  I wasn't a fan from the get-go, but that could be because I was exhausted and hungry.  What I remember, in my hazy memory, was that the lighting was harsh, the whole place smelled awful (like rotten fish and beer farts) and the decor reminded me of a subway station.  We practically had to do jumping jacks to get the bartender to notice us, but there seemed to be a lot of happy people there who were, no doubt, very drunk, so it can't be all bad...

I'm visiting from Texas, and at this point I was done eating fried seafood. We stopped at Andy's because they had a nice variety of menu items. We were there for a late lunch about 3, and the place was nearly empty except for some rude boys having a burping contest at the bar.

The waiter was nice and friendly and quickly greeted us. My friend tried a Shipyard Ale, and I enjoyed a blueberry pop.

Despite last night's disappointing lobster rolls at the Lobster Shack, my pal ordered the lobster club. She raved about the bread, the generous ingredients, and repeatedly proclaimed it the best sandwich ever. It was 'market price' which today was $14. That's less than the horrible Lobster Shack meal.

I ordered the crab cake salad with standard Chipotle dressing.  I first sampled the crab cakes to judge them on their own merit. Alone I would give them 3 stars. But the salad combo was tops.

This is a great place, and I would get their lobster club if I make it back.

Loved the fish and chips and my son loved the mac n cheese and homemake potato chips!! It was our last day in Maine and we had time to kill before heading to the airport. My brother in law was craving one last lobster roll so we walked down Commercial Street and happened into Andy's. We all really enjoyed our lunches and the owner even came out to chat. (No his name isn't Andy) He took time out to talk to my son about the swordfish sword hanging on the wall and gave him a picture of a swordfish to take. Loved the welcoming atmosphere.

Having spent the entire weekend outdoors, I kind of liked the idea of having a simple lunch inside a pub on a sunny summer Sunday.

My dining companions sat at one of the high tables and ordered liberal amounts of fried foods, mine being the scallop and shrimp roll special of the day. It was very good, like my dining companions' chicken tenders and French dip sandwich. But nothing was exceptional.

The bathroom, however, was worthy of writing about since there was no sink or mirror inside. To wash your hands, you have to exit the bathroom and do it in the hallway. I guess that helps with peer pressure, encouraging everyone to wash their hands, but I was sort of confused at first. Plus, I would never be able to poop in a stall with no door.

This is a solid three! The staff were very friendly making it feel like an old skool pub, even though I wasn't a local.

I stopped by for lunch and had the fish and chips which was tasty, fish fresh and nicely cooked.  I also had a sample of the local beers... Not so big on the blueberry ale but it was worth the experience.

I had some decent food here. The crowd of what seemed to be regulars was eclectic enough to retain my interest in sticking around for another cider and some pie.

The Fish Chowder was good though IMO it was more of a stew. Instead of being creamy and thick it was thin, milky and buttery. That's fine with me because that's similar to the Oyster Stew I grew up on. Their Blueberry Pie was GREAT though. I was nearly licking the plate.

My one gripe would be that the things I ate were microwaved and came out too hot at that. A little patience (and cider) later and it was OK though.

The "Tselikis" Pizza was aces, though I still couldn't tell you how to pronounce the name. Luckily, the bartender/waitress was very helpful -- and very patient with our rambunctious children. The pizza was great that night, and the half I brought back to the hotel room was even better for lunch the next day.

On a Friday night, this was the only place along Commercial Street that did not have a wait, which met our hungry children's needs perfectly. It seemed as if Andy's had been recently renovated and/or reinvented, so perhaps it's not on the tourist radar yet.

The other highlight was the side order of fresh-made kettle chips, enjoyed voraciously by everyone in the family. I'd return just for another order of those.

The lowlight? The local vagrant who camped near our table with the worst case of body odor you've ever laid a nose on. Worse was the fact that we were seated near the door, and the breeze was perfectly aligned to send the scent our way. The good news was he only stopped by our table occasionally for a sip of beer, before returning to the stoop to chain smoke. One can only hope he was only passing through, and is not a regular customer.
