Me and my family loved Archie Moores until
Today. Â Goes to show how one nasty experience can change everything. Â For almost
20 yrs of  meeting up with coworkers every week and dropping over $200 to
Ordering out or going in to eat, even my 12 yr old loves archie wings but after this past sunday when we ordered $54 worth of
Food, two quesadillas chicken was burnt, one
Of them half didnt have chicken, buffalo tenders
Didnt have sauce, i made my husband call
To make them aware, we didnt want to bother with going back, the
Manager on shift Justin couldnt stop thanking him for calling,  that it was the second call of the night for burnt food, he offers to make the food again and we said no because we didnt wanna go back, he then says I am  here Tuesday please call
In your order so I can give it to u free, soooo here it is tues
We call it in and he turns and tells my husband Oh I didnt know its to whole
Order I will Give it to you half off!  Excuse me, was this the same manager that said call tues to get it free be cuz they messed it up? Well my husband reminds  him, u told
Me it was free cuz the whole order sunday was ruined, the Manager  Justin says fine
You better not complain this time. Â WHAT? Â I called back myself
And told him  keep your order, I could not trust eating their food today  after that, I will
Come by and tell the Owner myself what you did. Â How
Poor management can bring business down, thats messed up, I would not want any Justins managing my business That way. You recognize there is a problem in  d kitchen, make a promise to the customer and then when its time to fulfill
That promise you say, you better not complain this time! Â After all
The money over the years and people I sent to them, I am still in shock, I
Hope the owner gets to hear how Justin manages the place when he isnt there.
I have been thinking about Archie's a lot recently. Â I love this place. Â I might consider myself a regular even. Â So from 2006 when I moved to New Haven until now I have eaten there between 3 - 8 times a month. Lately I have been trying to put my finger on exactly why. Â It isn't the closest restaurant or bar to my house but I always end up walking the extra blocks to go there.
The food is ok.  I eat it a lot and typically leave feeling full and satisfied.  I wish there were more fresh options on the menu.  Less open bag drop in fryer cooking. I would love specials that were a touch more labor intensive like a simple sauté of sausage with fresh peppers and onions.  I wish they used more salt on the burgers or used fresh Avocado instead of the pre done bagged stuff.  Otherwise I would call it decent pub food.  It has never made me sick and that means something to me.
I like that my two favorite drinks, Smithwicks and Jamison, are always available. I like that whenever all the other restaurants and bars are closed I can count on Archie's to be open.
I like the servers plenty but must confess that the majority of my visits have been at the bar.  However, when I watch the servers work I am impressed.  They seem to really care about the customers and each other.  They seem to understand that the people they are serving are largely locals and they treat them accordingly.  It is a sense of caring that I notice.  If I sat at the bar less I am sure I would know their names and I am sorry that I don't.  I can say that the guy with the beard and three of the female servers always seem to stand out.  If I start eating in the dining room more I will be sure to amend this review with names to give them the credit they are due. Â
None of this is enough to make me a regular.  So why do I love this bar so much? Â
I can only really come to one conclusion. Â It is the feel. Â It feels like I am having a beer at "Cheers". Â In many ways Archie's is the "Cheers" of New Haven. Â The bar guests are all regulars. Â They all know each other and their bartenders. Â I always hope that my favorite bartenders are working when I go in because I know that I will be treated well and all the customers around me will be happy. Â There are two standouts in this as well. Â Archie's own Sam Malone is Greg and Coach is Carl. Â Two of the best bartenders I have ever encountered. Â They are not doing fancy mixology or juggling like Tom Cruise in "Cocktail". Â They are doing something far more important. Â These guys are making their guests feel welcome and appreciated. Â Something that seems small yet makes such a difference. Â Archie's is a place I can go and feel relaxed and at home. Â I am grateful to Greg and Carl for their rolls in creating that type of atmosphere. Â It is the work that they do that keeps me coming back.
My husband & many other friends rave about the wings, on Super Bowl I have waited over an hour to p/u my wing order and even then they loved them, but the best things I have eaten here and will order any time I come are the "pulled pig nachos" melted cheddar, pulled BBQ pork deliciousness, or the potato skins homemade not pre done cooked just right, and go when "Willie" is the chef in the back everything is cooked awesome, best portions, nothing forgotten, or not done the way ordered.
Review Source:I finally made it to Archie Moore's and the wings did not disappoint. The buffalo wings were awesome super hot and fresh with a good amount of spice and nice crispy skin. The blue cheese sauce they come with is excellent as well. The boyfriend and I were pretty happy with the beer selection on tap too. We also tried the nachos with pulled pork which we agreed were subpar. There wasn't much to the nachos besides cheese, pork, and a few jalapeños and onions. The pork was too sweet and the flavors just didn't work together. I can't speak for much of the menu but you cant go wrong with the wings.
Review Source:My husband and I frequent this place when we are in the mood for a great burger close to Yale campus. Â I'm not a big fan of Buffalo Wings in general, but my husband is and raves about their wings. Â We typically order burgers and fries, and they are consistently good. Â The service is good, but not great, and they have a good amount of TVs to watch sporting events. Â Overall, a great local place with consistently good food and not too expensive. Â We go several times a semester.
Review Source:What can I say? I love their wings.
I go to Archie Moore's when I'm craving good, not too hot, buffalo wings. I order them extra crispy and always ask for extra bleu cheese. The wings come out perfect and are typically piping hot. Â I was there last week and they are still doing half off of all wings during happy hour, and not just $2 off as other reviews have mentioned.
Aside from the wings I have tried burgers and nachos, but both paled in comparison to the wings. Â The nachos are hit or miss - sometimes filled with cheese and pulled pork and sometimes empty. Â Burgers are good, but there are better options in New Haven.
The drinks are cold and if you sit at the bar you get them more quickly than at a table. Â I've never been overwhelmed with the service there, but its usually adequate and speedy enough.
The place has character and great wings. Try it out.
Maybe it's because I've never eaten at Archie Moore's, but I've gotten take-out quite a few times and it's always been a disappointment. Â The first time I ordered food from them was during Hurricane Irene when no one had power. Â My husband and I got the huge nachos plate and some fries, I believe. Â Maybe it was because we knew it was our only option, but we were satisfied...perhaps not the best food ever, but satisfying. Â Being new residents in the area we thought we had found a great spot for food. Â Next time we ordered from them we were disappointed with how stale and dry everything felt. Â I believe my husband got a cheeseburger that was not that tasty. Â After a while we decided to give them another chance since it couldn't have been that bad, right? Â We apparently had forgotten the past level of disappointment because we were disappointed. Â Again. Â I will give them props for their customer service, though. Â We ordered a burger, but they gave us a chicken wrap. Â I didn't notice until I got home and when I called them they said they had the burger and that they'd give me the whole order (including the extra wrap) for free. Â Still, the food wasn't that great. Â My husband and I keep thinking that maybe we should actually go there to eat because it looks like a fun place...or maybe we should just give them another chance. Â But then we look at each other and say, "Or we can just go someplace where we know it's going to be good."
Review Source:Before last weekend I had been here once before and was underwhelmed, but I thought I'd give it another shot on a Saturday afternoon.
Service was unimaginably slow, and I actually had to retrieve our check from the bar because our waitress had been missing for an hour. Â When the food finally came, it was the wrong sandwich, which was replaced relatively quickly. Â The fries were way overcooked. Â The buffalo wings, which somehow have an outstanding reputation, were just mediocre. Â However, two hours later they came back up in a rage of fury.
I definitely won't be going back for the food.
I like Archie Moore's, and that's about the strongest feeling I have about it.
I've been here a fair number of times and I've always left pretty satisfied. Â They're known for their wings, and consistently win "Best Wings on New Haven" awards, but I'm not entirely sure I agree. Â Yes, they're good, but the best? Â Not sure.
The locals here are an... interesting scene. Â This place is sort of on the border between a few different types of neighborhoods in East Rock so you get an interesting mix. Â Overall everybody is pretty friendly. Â The service is also decent.
I quite enjoy the beer-battered chicken sandwich as well as their sweet potato fries.
Still, I can't help but feel like there's something missing here. Â The food is good, but it's not spectacular. Â The drinks aren't particularly cheap. Â They don't seem to run any kind of specials, though I admittedly not checked out their Happy Hour.
On a plus note, they do serve food pretty late and you can generally get a table without any fuss.
I like you, Archie Moore's, but I don't think I'm IN love with you. Â I'm sorry. Â I hope you'll understand.
My dearest Archie's, why hast thou forsaken thee??
Archie's had (yes, past tense) an amazing happy hour that the whole city knew about. Half off wings. Yup. Didn't matter how many you ordered, all wings were half off.
My hubby and I became addicted. At least 3 times a month we'd order an overly huge serving of wings and a pitcher of beer. That's all you needed. Lately we've been told by staff that we would be charged extra for any left overs we opted to pack up because the "take out containers are costing too much."
After a huge craving last week, we visited Archies for the usual. Wings are no longer half off. They are only $2 off. Whether you buy 6 or 60 wings, it's just $2 off. AND.... AAAAANNNNDDDDD.... they're still going to charge you $2 extra for any left overs you want to take home!! I know. It's not ok.
Even though we used to live at this place, and it's one block away, with the new "happy hour" (not-so-happy-hour?) they've put in place, we have agreed that we will probably not be back. It's like a really horrible violent brake up, but sometimes the mental abuse needs to be stopped.
Archie Moore's is such a neat space. From the outside, AM's looks like a little shack. Don't be fooled, though. Once you walk in, there's SO much space, including a bar area [equipped with bar stools that line the bar AND a fair number of tables] and additional seating in the back*.
The bathrooms are nice and clean. Totally uncharacteristic of a bar in New Haven. I blame the Yalies**.
There are quite a few decent beers on tap. AM's is pretty consistent in having at least one seasonal brew on hand, which I appreciate. The last time I was in I had Sam Adams Octoberfest. Mmm. Not to mention, The waitstaff and bartenders are ridiculously friendly.
The food is pretty standard pub grub, and all in all it's pretty good. Get the vegetarian chili. Even if you usually eat meat-based chili. Trust me, you'll thank me later.
___
*I know what you're thinking. It IS just like that measly weasly tent in the fourth Harry Potter movie.
**I'm sorry!!! Pointing the finger of blame directly at the Yalies for things I don't understand is a knee-jerk reaction.
As a local in the East Rock neighborhood for nearly 5 years, i really enjoyed frequenting this local bar. Â The ambiance and people are great there. Â Nothing better than their clam chowder and a nice, fall or winter beer on a cold, rainy New Haven night.
Though the quality of the wings are hit or miss and they aren't the best in the state (as critics often rate them), they are quite delicious. Â As for the rest of the food, its ok - typical pub food. Â
Overall - a great place to meet friends or watch a game and enjoy some delicious drinks!
The bar is nice inside. Â My labmates and I were there on a Tuesday. Â Busy but you could get a table and you weren't elbow to elbow with people. Â I would say good sign though being a Tuesday. Â Music in the background but not too loud that you can't talk with everyone at the table. Â The wings we had were good, but they only come in one flavor, Buffalo (which was a tame kind of Buffalo). Â I am used to the Bidwell Tavern though where you can get just about any flavor you can think of. Â The food came out fast and our waitress was very nice. Â Nothing super special, but a solid place to hang out with friends. Â I will definitely go back.
Review Source:Should you go to Archie's and get wings? Yes, you should.
The wings are the best I've ever had. The sauce is great and really tasty, I'll use it as a dipping sauce for my fries and practically everything else. They cook them just the way I like them, a little dry. Speaking of the fries, they are pretty darn good also, crispy, not really greasy, and good with nothing on them even.
Everything else there is what you'd expect from a bar/restaurant. Nothing to rave about, but you go to Archie's for the wings. The lot isn't that big, so you may wind up parking on the street.
Also, if you've even wanted to see the largest collection of Coca-Cola merchandise outside of Atlanta, then check them out.
One word: wings. Â If you haven't eaten Archie's wings before, get there yesterday and eat some... they are damned good. Â Otherwise, it's basically just a run of the mill bar that happens to be close by to the East Rock neighborhood. Â The fries are pretty good, too. Â I may have to get some Archie's later... noo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111 oh wait I mean, yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! Â :D
Review Source:The way people rave about this place, I was expecting bar heaven when I came here. Â What I actually found was a typical run-of-the-mill bar. Â Nothing special, but nothing terrible, either.
We ordered the wings after hearing rave reviews and found them to be rather lacklustre. Â My boyfriend and I have tried wings in many different places in many different states, and have often had wings better than these. Â They weren't terrible, but I just don't get the hype. Â We also tried their potato skins which were not particularly good at all. Â They really had no flavor other than potato, despite being topped with cheese and bacon. Â For my meal, I had the turkey club, which was good, but it would take a true moron to mess up a turkey club. Â I really did enjoy the fries, though. Â We split the peanut butter pie for dessert, and again, it was pretty run-of-the-mill.
I was super excited that they served Woodchuck, but less excited by what they charged for it- over $4 for a bottle. Â Back home, I can get a 20 oz. Woodchuck for $4. Â Ridiculous.
Service was incredibly slow and inattentive, and our waitress was awkward. Â I did like the atmosphere, though.
I probably won't go back.
A fellow prospective and I were brought here for lunch by two students. Â It's split into a bar area (front) and a dining section (back), and there was a pretty good, but not too crowded, lunch group. Â I'm scared of all things spicy so I didn't get the buffalo wings, but the other visiting student did and he found them to be quite good. Â The bacon dressing is amazing, and the waitress was more than happy to offer me a complimentary extra container. Â Service is really attentive, prices are good, and it's a relaxed easy-going atmosphere. Â Definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area.
Review Source:Archie Moore's.... The staple of classic wings in CT... Â There are other places that "wow" you with countless flavors and different cooking styles... Â But if you want an incredible, standard wing, Archie's is your place! Â I have only been to this location once and had a great time! Â Plenty of tables an TVs to watch whatever sporting event you choose! Â
The only drawback is parking, but what can you expect in New Haven!
My husband and I drove down to CT on Super Bowl Sunday last year, and went to Archie Moore's. We have bought the sauce at the grocery store for years, and wanted to have the real thing. It was worth the drive, for sure! And let me tell you, even though it was clearly their busiest day of the year, the staff was courteous and attentive.
Review Source:Whenever I visit my friend in New Haven we stop by here for some beers and chowder. The first time I was here I asked the waitress about the chowder, and she said it was great, but I was a little hesitant...I figured it would be standard run of the mill Pub chowder. But it was surprisingly good, and I can't wait to get it again.
Review Source:I think what made my experience here so memorable was the company I ate with and the shear volume of delicious wings we consumed. Â I went with the crew of high school kids I always hung out with and we did not say a word while we chomped on those tasty wings. Â My friends Paul and Matt were actually having a competition to see who could eat the most-something I'm glad I did not partake in as they were both sick afterward. Â I would definitely go back here and order more wings.
I use to live next door to this place, but I was too young to appreciate it:(
Okay...Archie Moore's. I had been to your Derby and Milford locations, but had never been to what I have heard called "the holy grail" of the chain, the original...New Haven.
I finally made it over there last month. And...I was really not impressed. Our food came out cold, the tables were cramped in and the service was rude. While I get this is a neighborhood bar and we had a largish party, we weren't an overly drunk largish party--but we were spending good money there. The wings are good...but I have to agree with Jonathan and say I really do prefer Delaneys!
I hate to admit, but I would rather go to the Milford location rather than New Haven....but I'm happy I at least tried it once.
I don't know that I would travel to come here, though I know that lots of people do. But this is a fine neighborhood establishment. To eat in, to take out, whatever. It's reliable. They're open even in the cruddiest weather. It's always noisy and it's nearly impossible to have a conversation using your normal speaking voice, but it's comfortable and good.
I highly recommend the buffalo chicken sandwich and, to my constant surprise, the gardenburger club, to which I became addicted a couple years ago. I love the fries.
Additionally, this is one of those rare bars (rare in America, anyhow) where you can safely bring children without pissing off everyone. The service staff is usually very friendly and welcoming, even to small fry, and I appreciate that even more now I've got a small fry of my own.
Wings simply do not get any better than this.
The spicy sauce, the thick, chunky bleu cheese and the crunchy chicken all make for terrific wings. I consider myself something of a buffalo wing connoisseur, and these are the real deal.
Friends and I make the hour drive when we have the hankering. They're that good.
My husband & I used to frequent Archie Moore's when we lived in East Rock. Food was good enough, the staff was always very friendly & accomodating even if the service was a little slow. We hadn't been in about a year - so last night we stopped by to get some takeout and have a beer while waiting for our food. Huge mistake.
First off, the waitress who greeted us got visibly annoyed when we said we were ordering "to go" and sent us to the bar after rolling her eyes at us. Â Extremely rude and unprofessional. The entire vibe in the place had changed in just a matter of a year - I couldn't wait for our food to be ready so we could get out of there. The only friendly staff person was the bartender (and is the only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1).
We both ordered our favorite - the shallot & garlic burger. And we both woke up feeling quite ill this morning. It was a terrible experience and really sad that we won't be returning given how much we used to enjoy it.
As a straight girl who loves baseball, hot wings and beer, I should've worn a diaper in this place because I got all three here (plus the men) and was in heaven. Â This place is smack dab in the middle of my sister's old neighborhood when she was attending Smarty U. Â I got to hang out here a few times while visiting and immediately wished this place was right next door to my home. Â I went during happy hour when the food was free so I got my fill of wings and other goodies. Â But now I see that the wings aren't free anymore but half off, which is still pretty good. Â I felt comfortable coming in; I'm a casual kinda gal and like not getting the up 'n' down stare treatment when I walk into a place. Â The guys are occupied with the sports on the televisions and/or are settling down from their days. Â Sure you may still get a look, but it could be because you're leaving the door open on one of those cold Connecticut winter days.
Honestly I don't remember eating anything else but the wings. Â Those alone deserve a galaxy o' stars. Â I'd like to have a standing order of their sauce. Â If you know me keep that in mind!
It's a jeans and t-shirt kind of place. Â Basically if you're not snotty, haughty, or gaudy, you'll like it here. Â The food is no more than basic bar fare but it sure is tasty. Â The selection of beer and liquor helps too.
The wife and I ate dinner at Archie Moore's while watching our NCAA brackets implode. Â This is a fairly reliable stop for junk food (nachos, buffalo wings, onion rings). Â My wife also likes that they serve Woodchuck hard cider.
We usually take pains to sit in the back room away from the bar. Â I like the table in the furthest corner to the left of the entryway, where you can get a great view of the TV near the kitchen. Â Service is often very friendly -- we don't go here super often (maybe once every other month or so) but the waitress always treats us with familiarity.
I strayed from my usual and ordered the beer battered fish sandwich, which turned out to be a mistake. Â The fish tasted like Gordon's fish fillets from the supermarket freezer, and was just as dissatisfying. Â The wife ordered the buffalo wings with a salad, and was very pleased (I didn't taste because I don't eat meat off the bone). Â I did soak my fries in the buffalo wing sauce, which is wonderfully spicy. Â In the past, I've enjoyed their nachos (especially the buffalo nachos w/ grilled chicken), which have a good filling-to-cheese-to-chip ratio.
In short, if you're looking to get tasty, greasy food in the East Rock area, Archie Moore's is one of your better bets.
Does everybody know there are rules when going to Archie Moore's New Haven?
When going during happy hour you can't sit at an open table unless you and your friends fill the table. If you are the first of your friends to arrive and holding the table, you will be asked numerous times what your plans are and if people are joining you. If no friends are joining you, you will be asked to move.
However if ordering a non alcoholic beverage at the bar and try to sit at the bar you will be asked to move, but not to a table they need available for happy hour.
I only go here for lunch with colleagues when I am not the one driving, playing pinball with my car in their parking lot.
Update, I dropped my rating to 1 star after learning they no longer put out wings for Happy Hour. I didn't care for the place to begin with, and ended up there to meet friends (at their request). I thought I could at least snack a little after I was blocked in the parking lot for 10 mins trying to get a spot. Their delicous wings can make me forget any hassle I may have endured during the day.
4 stars for the fries alone. Come to me my starchy phallic fry of love...I swear, I'd be that girl dabbing potato grease behind her ears if I wasn't already made fun of enough for being Irish.
It's a bar. It's borderline sports bar, and if you get me anywhere near a place where "WOO!" is followed by an immediate man clap or Homer sized "D'OHHHH!" I will probably spontaneously combust and my last words will be something like "Die meatheads die! " as I fizzle out into eternity...but it's who I am with that makes me forget the atrocity of a bad crowd.
The buffalo wings were fantastic, it's great for groups and pretty decent drink sizes, as well as strength. I've been to the one in Milford with the big outdoor deck that resembles nothing but a puffy cattle call in the summers or a barren wasteland in the winter. *shiver* It ain't pretty folks.
But as with anything, there is always a price. I fear those wings and that burger will be traveling with me all the way back to the West coast and I feel sorry for anyone sitting next to me. Why do bad choices taste so good?
Yyyyyyyyyyeah. Um... Archie Moore's has been here forever, and I suppose there's a reason why.
That being said, I like Archie's. The food isn't great or anything, but it's decent enough if you stick to the basics. The bartenders are sarcastic but friendly, which is how I like my bartenders. Drink and food prices are reasonable.
Oh, and the creamy bacon dressing? Pretty much great on anything.
I know Archie's has great wings, but, at the risk of being hunted down and physically beaten by various residents of New Haven, I don't think they're that big of a deal. I've had great wings at a lot of places. Oh, and Delaney's, which has great wings, DOES still give you them for free during happy hour.
I'd say go there if the sun is still out and you're in the area, you could certainly do a lot worse.
I want to like buffalo wings, I really do. Â They're such a big group bonding food, super cheap, and come in different flavours. Â I love flavours. Â But try as I might, I just can't get into them. Â
But no matter, because Archie Moore's has so much to offer, in addition to their famously delicous wings (that I've never tried). Â It's bar food, but it's good bar food, and even better - it's decently priced, good bar food.
They have super duper friggin fantastic fries - cripsy, batter-y on the outside, smooth and chewy on the inside, and just the right amount of over-saltiness (but in the best of ways for fries!). Â And nachos. Â My goodness, do I love nachos. Â The regular are super huge and topped with plenty of cheese, jalapenos, and sides of salsa and sour cream. Â Mmmmmmmmmm. Â They also have a wide selection of delicious-sounding sandwiches and wraps. Â My favourite so far is the Paul's grilled chicken - chicken with American cheese (I sub in Swiss), hot and sweet peppers. Â Mmmm. Â Add to that a pint of beer on tap, and you're set.
Not only is the food good, but it's a great atmosphere. Â It has this very comfy, cozy neighbourhood, chill feel to it. Â I love it. Â I should have started coming here earlier. Â Why did I wait so long???
*** UPDATE *** Â (it's Useful, i Promise)
Their Happy Hour (Monday - Friday, 3 - 6 pm) can no longer provide free wings, but instead offers half-price wings and $1 off draft beers. Â Hey, they've been shelling out free wings for so long (actually, I don't really know for how long, but I'm just guessin...), I'm sure we can accommodate.
And on a personal note... Â My new favourite item also requires updating. Â It is now the vegetable club sandwich. Â I know, what moron goes to a bar and orders the friggin veggie option. Â Um.. Â Right Here, I would be that moron. Â But it's surprisingly good for a veggie sandwich, a veggie sandwich at a bar, no less. Â It has lots of fresh ingredients and a tasty (way better than boca!) veggie patty-like thing. Â Throw in the fries, and I could eat that same thing for daaaaaaaaaaaaays, if not weeks.
Best wings in the world! Â This establishment was my first forway into Buffalo wingdom. Â We never have a party without ordering a tray. Â I always use their sauce (available in most stores) when making wings myself, but do yourself a favour and try the original. Â They also have restaurants in Milford, Fairfield and coming soon to Derby. Â yep, that's right - DERBY.
