I always go to A's with my boyfriend for their amazingly fluffy omelets. But this time the waitress recommended for us to try their lunch specials. My boyfriend had this delicious pork medallions covered in a creamy wine mushroom sauce and I decided to go with the chicken kabob. You can't go wrong with either or.
Review Source:Typical diner food.  We ordered corned beef hash with scrambled eggs and it was quite tasty.  It came out very quickly too.  Decor is kind of out dated, but there was something charming about the simplicity of it.  It was pretty busy as well.  Would go back again if I wanted  a simple meal.
Review Source:I just went here the other day on a whim and boy am I glad. I had the french toast with pecans and caramel. I usually don't have a sweet tooth, but this was delicious! I highly recommend it. My friend had a sirloin steak skillet, which looked delicious.
I also noticed that the place was VERY clean and that the servers were pleasant.Prices are average...everything is about $7-10 range and the plates are more like platters. They are freakin' HUGE. Â I just wish I knew about this place when I was going to Wright college.
Great food here. Went several times for lunch with coworkers and was impresses every time. Free soup with almost everything, and I loved it even if I didn't like that kind of soup. Great flavor all around, free warn bread, great fries, salads, omelets, and sandwiches. Only downside is the horrid 90's music, but it's fun reminiscing about how much we likes those songs in middle school. Highly recommended.
Review Source:The A's Restaurant is a great no frills diner. Just good breakfast food at a reasonable price with service that is really friendly. Â We came in on a Saturday mid-morning looking for pancakes in the area and settled for this place. Â Doesn't seem like that much outside and really old school - which could be good or bad in this neighborhood. We came in and were seated immediately by the owner and waiting on promptly. Â Ordered eggs, buttermilk pancakes, sausage, and coffee. Â All of it was really good and came to our table really fast. Â
If you're around Irving park or Portage park and want breakfast, this is a sure bet.
I had to go with four stars, because I am indeed ... a fan. I have been here more times than I can count. I somehow forgot to write a review, so of course I am rectifying this oversight now.
A's is not a fancy place. It is not a gourmet restaurant or a trendy spot. What I like about it is that it is a good, traditional neighborhood family restaurant. The food is decent and the service has ALWAYS been friendly and attentive.
Mom and I stop here for "brunch" every time we drop our dog off at the groomers. Mom really loves the crepes here. She gets the ones with Strawberries. The portions are huge and she always ends up taking some home. She has it down to a science. Take the crepes, not the strawberries or it will get too soft. She has no desire to try anything else and comes away very happy.
I'm more flexible and what I order depends on my mood. Yesterday it was a BLT Club sandwich with home made chips on the side. It came with a bowl of minestrone soup. It was all good. Was it the best I have ever had? No, but it was tasty and filling. Drinks are always refilled and the coffee topped off. We are never rushed and it is a great place to be able to eat and converse as well.
Next time the dog needs a haircut, we will be back.
I was eating out with my boyfriend at a decent place when I remarked to him, "Ya know, I don't think I eat at any place I would call truly horrible." Â But than we both thought it and realized that it's not that we don't eat at any truly terrible places but that we sear them from our memory afterwards.
This is one such place. And to give you an idea of how long I've seared this place out of my memory, we ate here for the first and last time 2 years ago.
We were living in the neighborhood at the time and were looking for a decent dinner to go to for breakfast foods and such and thought to give this place a try, it looked decent and had parking.
The service was so so, not great just unmotivated and not super friendly.
The food was horrendous....and we got breakfast so you know they had to screw up really bad if they can't even do a decent breakfast.
I got minced ham and scrambled eggs and my bf got an omelet. They came to our table looking like the same order, a pile of egg cake. Seriously, these things looked like an egg cake all puffy and solid looking on the outside, inside wasnt much better. To say things were inedible was an understatement. I shoved down as much as I could stomach for no other reason than hunger. My bf's omelete had more tomatoe on the inside than egg.
The hashbrowns and bacon tasted like they hadn't cleaned out the grease traps in years...or maybe ever.
I wouldn't reccomend this place to my worst enemy.
Not bad. Not fantastic. Just aaaight. Â It's always a challenge to find good neighborhood spots - we don't always feel like driving 20-30 minutes for a quick meal - so that's how we ended up here. Â
The fiance enjoyed his Mediterranean scramble with pancakes and fruit, but I had the mediocre oatmeal with bananas and brown sugar. Â Yeah, I know - why bother eating out if I'm going to eat oatmeal right? Â
Anyway, the scramble was very flavorful and moist- definitely something to try. Â The coffee was so-so. Â The staff was a tad obnoxious and loud and the waitresses were just flirting with the cooks the whole time, but still managed to refill our coffee at least once.
The only thing that really irked us is that we were double charged on our credit card because of the "new system" they have. Â Shouldn't "new" equal "better"? Anyway, it was decent, but the credit card incident will probably prevent us from returning again.
Greek owners but not necessarily a Greek restaurant. They have Greek food but my family and I come for the breakfast (maybe lunch now and again). Family owned biz. The wife, daughter, and son are super friendly and we love chatting it up with them.  However, the old man is a bit of a crab.  Not sure what his issue is. Guy doesn't say a word to you but took the time to chastise my wife when our kids drew on the table a bit with their crayons (side note: the crayons we bring are washable. A little water on a napkin, wipe, and the table is good as new). Stay away from the old man but come for the skillets, pancakes, skirt steak & eggs, ham off the bone, friendly wait staff, and pleasant atmosphere. Also, very clean!  Wish this place was a little more kid friendly. They don't have kiddie cups or kiddie place-mats like some other places (e.g., Golden Nugget). Parking in the rear of the restaurant is limited but plenty of neighborhood parking.  Interesting Side Note: the men's urinal is usually filled with ice. Not sure  the purpose of that but don't let that stop you from visiting.
Review Source:We've been coming here since shortly after they opened as A's. The wait staff are always very friendly and helpful. The family that owns the place always greet you warmly.
As others have mentioned, the food is standard American family restaurant fare, nothing fancy, but it's done properly. The chorizo skillet is my favorite breakfast dish, although recently I had one that didn't have enough jalapenos or cheese (I like mine spicy). I've had dozens of omelets there and each one was cooked perfectly. The burgers are good as well. The chicken pesto panini is quite tasty and I've been ordering that more often lately.
There is a parking lot behind the restaurant that is shared amongst all the storefront businesses in that building so it can sometimes be crowded. There is a 1/4 block worth of non-permit parking on Cuyler, just north of Irving Park Rd that I'll use if the lot is full. Failing that, there's almost always parking available on Irving Park Rd. You most certainly CAN enter from the back of the building/parking lot, and you've always been able to do so.
I have no idea what to say about the fellow who thought the owner was trying to sneak a peak down the reviewer's wife's shirt. My wife and I have been in there many many times and have never seen anything like that either with ourselves or anyone else.
Unfortunately they haven't been open for dinner for just over a year, otherwise we'd be in there even more than we are already. Great place to get a solid and affordable meal.
I didn't realize how much I missed a plain old family type restaurant and pancake house until I got taken to A's for lunch one day. Â When I looked at the menu filled with turkey club sandwiches, pancakes and a list of specials like pork chops and meatloaf, I felt positively nostalgic.
I' ve been there three times in the last three weeks and each time I've been happy with what I've ordered, and the consistently helpful waitresses. Â This isn't a fancy place, it isn't upscale, it doesn't have trendy decor, clever names for the dishes, or waitstaff who are only working there until they get their next part. Â It's just plain old American coffee shop food at an average price. Â Go expecting more and you'll be disappointed. Â Go for a sandwich, the occasional supper, pancakes on Sunday morning and you'll be fine.
This place actually deserves NO stars. Â When I go to a restaurant with my wife, I don't appreciate when the host, owner or manager or whatever that greaseball is, staring at and trying to peek down my wifes shirt. Â So anyways to continue, the waitress comes to the table and she asks us what we want to order. Â I respond to her with 'If the owner wasn't so busy trying to sneak a peek at my wifes breasts, I'd be reading a menu instead of trying to guess what's on the menu". Â He never gave us menus, he just seated us. Â She then apologized and brought us menus and we ordered our Sunday morning breakfast. Â We ordered coffee or as I like to call it, black colored water. Â The coffee sucked. Our order comes and I really appreciate when a restaurant tries to give you salmonella through their undercooked omelette's. Â Once I saw the omelette's were rare I just asked for my check and did not eat a bite. Â We paid and left and went to our regular Sunday breakfast joint.
Review Source:This is an all American diner. They have breakfast, lunch and dinner specials. It is a down to earth place. They serve alot of familys and locals. They seem to have a very loyal customer base. I believe they were recently remodeled. There is a great city park across the street that's a good place to take a stroll before or after your meal here.
