Nothing special about the decor, but there is something special about the place.
Got in at 7PM on a Friday; seated immediately. Â I ordered the smoked tomato & goat cheese dip, a glass of wine and fettuccine alfredo (mostly to benchmark the food). Â The appetizer came in minutes, followed by a caesar salad then the main course. Â The sequencing was a little off, but not really a big deal for a restaurant in this price range.
The goat cheese dip was really quite good. Â It came with a loaf of bread as well. Â All in all it was more than enough for two people (perhaps too much for two). Â
Before I could get too carried away with the dip, the Caesar came. Â It was delicious: dressing was very creamy, good flakes of parmesan and large "croutons" (unseasoned hard bread basically). Â Despite the miss on the croutons and no offer of ground pepper (again, quite forgivable), it went down quickly enough to refocus on the dip and wine.
After a few more bites of dip the main came. Â It was a perfect portion presenting very well. Â That went down nicely too!
Now, all in all the food was higher quality and portioned larger than I expected, however, the staff made all the difference. Â I asked for recommendations on every aspect of my meal and was given a nice variety of options - even on wine.
Speaking of wine, and I'll admit I am not a connoisseur, their wine list was larger than their menu. Â I was quite pleased with what all was available. Â If I lived in the Indy area I would definitely take advantage of their "club". Â I'm sure if you go there you will learn about it, but it seemed well worth getting discounts for "repeat offenders" of their wine list.
Overall, I am quite pleased with the place. Â The staff to ratio was above average, all were quite friendly and my experience was good. Â Even the other diners were raving about everything from spaghetti and meatballs to lasagna. Â Definitely worth a try, and I will likely revisit when I get back to Indy.
Alright, this one time I'll let you ask me about my affairs.
Do I eat here?
Yes, I dine at Augustino's.
What do they cook?
Eh, they's a gonna make some fried peppers and sausage for us.
Where do they get their products?
Now, I don't know if this is true, but I heard they get bread from back home, they get fish from California, and you can always tell a great kitchen like theirs 'cause of the milk-fed veal. That's the secret. See, milk-fed veal is pure white.
Anyway, I like this place and I used dialogue from three movies to make the point.
A last minute valentines day destination. Â We had no reservation and expected to wait so that wasn't the problem. Â It was after we sat down at our table when things started to go bad. Â It took forever to get water, bread, or even an order placed. Â The appetizer never came, and people around us seemed to have the same issues. Â Others who sat down after us got food before us, as we did before others who sat before us. Â The overall experience was a bit disappointing. Â In a day and age of online reviews and armature critics, this place failed on its performance for a romantic night out. Â The food was great! Â Do not mistake that, only they ran out of most entrees in the late evening. Â Just avoid those expectedly busy evenings as the wait staff crack under pressure and you'll be alright.
Review Source:I went here with my best friend and his parents. Â It was a fantastic restaurant! Â The owner is actually from Italy and walks around to all the tables and talks to his customers. Â The food was fantastic and they had a great selection of wines from VERY affordable to a little more expensive. Â The menu was simple but also provided many different food options and varieties. Â Definitely a good place for a date or for family.
Review Source:This is as good as it gets for italian on the southside. Large portions, great food, and great wait staff. I've seen the owner/chef every time I've eaten there. Food is a bit pricey, but the Lasagna Carni is the best lasagna I have ever tasted. Couple that with fresh bread and great appetizers and an unbelievable Tiramisu and you have an altogether great dining experience!
Review Source:Great Italian food, probably the only options on the south side of Indy. The food is excellent. I love their bread and their soup especially. Full bar, good wine selection, decent beer options as well. Friendly and courteous staff. The owner likes to make the rounds and see how the meal went.
Review Source:I heart Augustino's. As far as I'm concerned, this is the only viable option for Italian food in the downtown area. Sad part is that it isn't even downtown...it's a quick 10 minute drive from downtown (Emerson Rd south of Southport Rd). But it's worth the drive rather than settling for any of the downtown Indy Italian restaurants. Prices are very reasonable (most entrees are $14) and include a house salad. Portions are huge. There isn't much in the way of atmosphere, but really, if the food is good that doesn't matter. You can tell it is a family run business and a lot of love is put into it. Minus one star because the service has been hit or miss and the house salad too closely resembles an out-of-the-bag variety, even though I'm sure it isn't. I believe you can upgrade for a Caesar salad and I recommend doing that. Â Even though the address says it's on Emerson, it's actually in a strip a little ways back off the street. Kind of hard to see from the road.
