Wow.
So I have been coming here for the "night" crowd for a while. But never really got much in the way of food until recently.
I had the blackened chicken burger and it was outstanding. A bit salty, but lots of flavor and it was much better than I was anticipating it being.
It came with a side of fries that literally took up 3/4 of the plate - very generous and too much for me to even finish!
The only problem I have with coming here is that they are really lacking in beer "specials" - drinks here are a bit overpriced in my opinion. Not expensive, but nothing to really draw you in.
I will for sure eat here again though.
One of my favorite bars in Tucson. Â Really friendly staff and for how busy this place can get, the bartenders are always very attentive. Â Lots of beers and drink specials to choose from... and I should probably suggest you try the Harry Potter shot at least once. Â The shot itself is mehhh but the presentation is pretty epic. Â Related: this place smells amazing because of these shots. Â They set those suckers on fire and they're topped with cinnamon so there's always an aroma of French toast in the air. This place is great and I would love to give it 5 stars but the bathrooms are atrocious.
Review Source:I generally have mixed feelings about the Dub, but a couple of things make it four-star worthy. Â Firstly though, I'm going to express my grievances, which are rather silly little things actually. Â The set up of the Dub just doesn't appeal to me. Â I think it's just the tables that are kind of smooshed to the side and tightly packed together, and the uncomfortably high chairs that bother me. Â Also, service here is not the best, especially when it is busy on a weekend or when there is game. Â Nonetheless (time for the accolades), the Harry Potter shot is just awesome. Â I've been told that the blue liquid is Gatorade, but I'm not sure about that. Â Anyhow, they mix the shots (always comes in two or more), top the shot glass with an orange slice, pour over with alcohol, sprinkle some cinnamon on the orange slice, light it the alcohol, then toss in more cinnamon to make the fire huge and rain down little sparklets. Â It's really cool and the show makes the shot worth the $10. Â
Another pretty awesome bit here is their fish and chips. Â I've ordered their fish tacos, which were okay, but my friends have all said the fish and chips, especially at happy hour price, is so great. Â Try it out! And be sure to take newly 21 year olds or friends visiting Tucson to try out the HP shot at the Dub.
I almost past this bar up but then decided to stop in for a beer. Not too many people there for a Sunday around 7 but I ended up staying and ordering the blackened chicken (in a wrap) w/ tots which was great! ...I'm from out of town and don't know many bars but Paul & Taylor which work there made me feel like I was at my home bar, Thanks guys, I'll be back again!!!
Review Source:I really can't stand this place but I somehow get dragged here. I am putting my foot down and never setting foot in it again. The prices area horrific I don't understand why they think they can charge the prices they do, especially during happy hour. It's no surprise that every other place is packed during hh and this place has a max of 10 people milling about. The food, as I have said before, is expensive and nothing amazing. Standard bar fare at outrageous prices. I want to like this place, I do. But I have given it many chances over the last 8 months and it disappoints every time. Not even the promise of bar trivia can lure me in this craphole. Never again.
Review Source:I signed up for Yelp just so I could warn people about this place.
Whoever owns this place needs to clean house and get some new staff. I understand this is a college bar and I am sure they get their fair share of drunk frat guys but that doesn't give them the right to treat people the way they do. I'll start with the d-bag bouncer; he was the typical tool who has never had any sort of authority in his life, thus, once he does have some 'authority', he abuses it. I hadn't been drinking before I got there yet he demanded I 'stop swaying'. He then proceeded to act like he was doing me a favor by letting me in this POS bar. Apparently, one of the gimmicks this place uses to trick people into going there are the 'Harry Potter' shot. They put some cinnamon in there or something and it lights on fire. My cousin was intrigued so she ordered a round for everyone. One of the members had some weird allergies, so my cousin asked what was in the shots. This apparently is frowned upon at this place. The bartender acted as if she had called his mother a whore. My cousin, who was confused and drunk, again asked him the question. The bartender immediately grabbed d-bag bouncer and had her kicked out FOR ASKING WHAT WAS IN THE SHOTS! A couple of us still had full beers so we went out on the patio to finish them so we could hang out with my cousin who had been kicked out. I proceeded to chug my beer, then I went on the other side of the fence. One person, who was still inside of the fence was drinking slow so i reached over the fence and drank some of it. D-bag bouncer was not happy. I now realize this was against the law, however, he then proceeded to kick the whole group out, even though everyone still had full drinks. He then proceeded to talk sh*t as we walked away. Â I was wondering why this bar was empty while every other bar in town was packed....now I know. I went to college here and I have seen bars come and go in this particular location. I remember when it used to be Phat Tuesdays, another crappy chain bar. With the type of customer service they displayed last night, I'll be surprised if this place is still here next time I am in town. If it is, I will certainly take my business elsewhere.
Okay; for the nights I do remember going here and drink....
This is a nice, small place to go to if you are on University. On Friday and Saturday nights, it gets packed and people are getting wasted (like someone I know :D). Most of the time, this isn't the place you would expect a dance floor; but if someone would start it (one time my friends and I did because of Gangnam Style) it would be awesome!! I never went in the morning because usually I am in class and go elsewhere for food. I would like to try this place in the morning or lunch (if they are open) one of these days.
They have this shot (because they like dealing with fire) called the HARRY POTTER shot; not quite sure what is in it but it's BLUE!! Essentially, the bartender torch the shots and it goes up a huge flame. If you buy it for your group of flames; they will worship you; I promise. Well, not really, but it is really cool. You should try it, you know you want to. If you are skeptical, just send me a message and I will go and order with you. So, I can say, "I told you so :P" Just kidding! Anyway, sometimes you will see me there with my friends, if you do just say "Hi" to me.
Anyway, this is a cool place to be at on a week day night or weekend night!! It is almost or about the same amount of coolness as GentleBen's across the street. :D
Worst bar in Tucson. Â The bartender was a pretentious dick and the bouncers were something out of a movie. Â They were like high school bullies, literally making fun of bar patrons, trying to start fights, it was ridiculous. Â I've never seen anything like it before, completely unprovoked too! Â Reading through the reviews I'm not the only one who had problems with the bouncers. Â The drinks were also overpriced and the place was a dirty shit hole. Â
Save yourself the trouble, there are a ton of good bars on University, this isn't one of them.
Bouncer wouldn't let one of my sober friends inside and was exceptionally rude when we asked why (friend was 21 and we had more to drink then he had!). Â Asked us to leave and immediately threatened to call the cops. Â Perhaps he was following some guideline for letting people in, but no need to be downright rude to us.
Review Source:True Irish fare, often Irish music and always great service. Â they know the "right" way to pour your Guiness and the decor is true Irish pub. Â Like any good Irish pub, it's all ages but during the school year, it is mostly UofA students. Â Sunday nights there is a jam session with local players singing and playing Irish folk music. Â The food here is actually great. Â Not just great for Tucson, but really really good. Â Burgers, Fish, Irish Stew, salads and big portions. Â Upstairs is more of a bar w/tvs/sports and downstairs old country feel small room with tables (and tvs of course). We have been here many times and it has never disappointed. Â If you can't snag a street spot, try the garage on 1st across from the hotel or on w/e you can park kitty corner at the U of A building lot for free. (stickers req'd during week).
Review Source:Don't always have the best specials, but the food is decent and so is the atmosphere. Their chicken strips appetizer is HUGE for an appetizer - I always have it as a meal and usually even have some leftover! Their spicy potatoes are amazing, and their hot wings are delicious, too! Service is sometimes spotty, so I tend to sit at the bar and it's great!
Review Source:Got a reply from the manager. Â Has to be the most condescending reply I've ever received:
Dear Richard,
I thank you for bringing this to my attention as it has reaffirmed the trust I have in my staff.  It was a fact that Kilkenny you were poured, (I have spoken to everyone who worked last night as well as our area manager who just happened to be in town last night during this incident).  I will make sure to put my response on Yelp! as well.  That being said, I invite you to come to the pub anytime to train the staff on which beers are which and how to pour them.  I will personally buy all of your drinks during your instructional clinic for our staff.  You obviously know what you're talking about much more than my staff does, (considering they've been trained by Guinness on the perfect pour for all of thier products).  Please let me know when your schedule permits you to come in and train my barstaff.  Oh, and 2 things really quick.  The 'Jerk Bartender' you referred to who made no mistake just got back from getting shot at in Iraq and fighting for our freedom a few months ago.  Secondly, it's spelled Guinness.  Let me know your availibility.
Kind Regards,
Mitch Preston
My reply:
Thank you for affirming my need for medical attention. I sat at the
bar close to the front door, and the tap on the end that the bartender
poured from looked just like a Guinness tap handle. Also didn't
realize that the pouring spoon is used when pouring Kilkenny. The
brown color I saw is further indication that my visual perception is
out of whack.
Oh, and it's spelled "their"
I had the pleasure of living in Tucson when this place opened and it became one of my favorites the minute I hit the door. The food is always amazing and the drinks are always cold and you never hear them say "sorry we are out". When I go back to visit Tucson this place is always a must stop. From the servers/bartenders/managers(all employees) to the music and food this place is all around AWESOME and always a great time. ( I only wish they still had Boddingtons on draft)
Review Source:Food was good, but we were disappointed in two things, they discontinued the Cherry cider and the Apple cider just isn't as good, and they discontinued their desserts. The service was competent but lack luster. The place was practically empty which probably has to do with the construction on university, maybe the rain, but since the management change, the place just isn't the same. The food was good though. And the live music (thanks so much for showing up) lovely.
Review Source:They usually have some good drink specials, e.g. $2 Blue Moon, but everything else is ridiculously overpriced - as in drinks that cost more than my entree.
As for the food - same problem. I have had the boxtys and the burgers. None of it was worth the $10+ I was charged. The best thing about the place is that the tater tots are delicious. Unfortunately they are also $5.50. Seriously. Over $5.00 for a side of fried potatoes. Maybe they import them from Ireland and there's another potato famine I don't know about.
The Auld Dubliner is a favorite of mine to get fish and chips at...granted, they are supposed to have authentic Irish food, but I've never had any of it. Â The atmosphere is decent. Â It's supposed to be playing off the "pub" feel with dark walls and dim lighting. Â There is plenty of seating, with booths on the outside, high tables between bars and booths and then a private room in the back. Â The bathrooms are a strange adventure in itself to get to! You walk to the back of the bar, past the private room into a hallway that looks like you should be going to class in. Â Or might be featured in a bad horror prom flick. Â Anyways, they restrooms are old and dingy and just seem icky.
The food is decent. Â I've only had the fish and chips, as I said before, and they were good. Â In fact, the fries were delicious because they sprinkled some kind of curry seasoning over them to give them a surprising kick. Â A group of us when from the b/f's work (he's in an "international dining club" with work people) and someone had the bangers and mash and said it was just ok. Â It wasn't the best he'd had. Â Also, some of the beers they list on their website as being on tap are actually NOT on tap, the ace's cider among them. Â We ordered some appetizers, typical bar food of potato skins and classic curry chips. Â Those were delicious!
Overall, a decent place to go for drinks and happy hour. Â Dinner is worth a try as there are some fairly good meals on there, my fish n chips and the shepard's pie included.
A few nights ago I was pulled into this bar by a friend because they had to have a special drink called a "HARRY POTTER".
Its a blue shot , with a lemon slice hat, sugar on top that is set on fire with some other alcohol. As its on fire they spike it with cinnamon which creates a really cool camp fire magic effect and is definitely a showstopper. The fire also warms the lemon and caramelizes the sugar and when blown out this becomes your shot chaser. Too much sugar can lead to mixed reviews on this as it alters the experience. Â It is a magical experience and a great way to impress on a fun night out.
The inside bar has well dimmed lighting and lends it self to that old fog atmosphere of Ireland. There are interesting artifacts on the walls and ceiling which make it well suited to create that old tavern ambiance.
The restrooms are really far in the back down a hallway that feel like two separate buildings. I wish they could dress it up in the future to keep the experience harmonized.
The smoking porch out front is a fun place to post and watch passerby's on this bust street and witness cops doing their job, whilst having strong feelings of schadenfreuden as you see people get pulled over.
Its a great pub and one i will be giving more patronage in the future.
So.... we came for trivia on a Wednesday night. Â This bar is located right on campus, so I expected a rowdy crowd of undergrads. Â Instead we got a rowdy crowd of grad students til about 11, when the undergrads showed up.
It was a little louder and drunker than I would prefer, as I have recently and without warning turned into my grandmother... but it was still tolerable for an Irish bar.
The drink specials were OUT OF CONTROL.  I had two whiskey on the rocks and a glass of merlot and paid $15 with tip!  I realize I am still on the  "Boston price" expectation, but damn, I keep getting off SO cheap in Tucson.  I still faint every time I think of paying rent at A THIRD of what a crappy apartment went for in Boston.  Staying on track...
There was definitely a sound problem with the trivia pa. Â It was distorted and the DJ lady had to basically yell every question at least twice. Â Still, we didn't even understand about 1/4 of the questions... I think the bar needs to invest in some real speakers.
The bottom line? Â I probably won't come again for trivia, but I'd probably go out here with a few girlfriends mingle, the crowd seemed interesting.
I've been a fan of the dubliner for a while, but today sealed the deal. Â I went in, slightly hungover, looking for the ultimate cure- the bloody mary. Â I always feel bad ordering one because there's so much work that goes in to it. Â This bartender was a champ, and I only regret that I didn't get her name so that I could tell the yelp community about her. Â She made an excellent bloody mary, with all of the essential ingredients and the addition of a bit of guiness and olive juice. Â I was basically enamored with the glass in front of me. Â
The dubliner has some great other perks as well, the beer is good, the drinks aren't too expensive, and it's walking distance to my apartment. Â It's definitely one of my favorite spots on University.
Alright. I'm working on an Irish "Weekly Yelp" and this place keeps poppin' up, which is understandable, being all Irishy and such, but is it, really? It's a little cookie cutter for my tastes a little franchise-y. Is this it Tucson?
Don't get me wrong. I've enjoyed the few times I've been there. Service is always prompt, they have a really good drink selection and it seems like the frat-guy-chads go elsewhere on 4th? In any case, I usually leave there having had a really nice time, but as far as pub atmosphere and pub grub, it falls short.
Know Before You Go:
They'll tell you it's not a chain, but there are five more. You decide.
I like the dubliner. Sometimes it's a little loud or packed but what great bar isn't? Very friendly staff, easy to get on a first name or a hey I recognize your face, basis with.
I don't order em but the Harry potter shot is something to see and experience.
For a while I had all the weekly deals memorized but alas school has limited my bar nights. I'll edit when I can but they have karaoke, live music, comedy, djs, prolly something going on at night.
The bar food, it's real food! Great stuff, "loaded tots" mmmm great base layer for a night of drinking. They have some other very good items on the menu too.
They have an auxiliary room that the use some times on bigger nights, worth checking if it's a Saturday night and the main area is packed.
The establishment is a college hangout and can get a bit crowded Friday and Saturday evenings. Â
The inside area has plenty of seating and they do have a small patio out front. Â Ensure you come during happy hour to take advantage of their drink specials.
I have visited this establishment several times over the years and as always I once again had the corned beef boxty and a Guinness. Â Sliced corned beef, Swiss cheese, and a horseradish mayo sauce wrapped in a potato pancake with seasoned cabbage. Â Wish I could tell you more about their menu but this is all I ever order as it is just fantastic. Â If you'd like to BAM it up a notch with some flavorful heat sensation, ask for the small jar of Coleman's mustard. Â
I really enjoy stopping at a venue for a bite to eat where great service, superb meal, and cold beer is always the norm. Â Enjoy!
I can't for the life of me figure out why people like this place. As a bar alone it's fine I suppose if you like waiting for ever for your drinks.
Each and every time I have been here they are short handed, it takes forever to get waitied on and the food borders between mediocre and miserable.
My friends and I have tried several dishes, hamburgers, corned beef, fish sandwhich, salad, bangers and mash....presentation is always wonderful and food is always disappointing.
I love the decor and a good pint of Guiness, but all the negatives are too much to overcome. I won't be back.
AMAZING happy hour!
The drinks and appetizers are a much better choice at the Dub than at another other bar on University. It's a fun place to stop by after class and grab a burger or a pint.
The Harry Potter shot is as much of a spectacle as one would expect - and the friendly bar tenders are always happy to whip it up for a group of revelers. Overall the service here is pretty consistently good. Can't go wrong at the Dub!
This place is convenient, has a nice patio, and a decent selection of beers. Â I have been here on several weeknights around 8 and it is never crowded. Â The curry fries were really good. Â The waiters are probably college students and not very attentive, always forgetting things, but sometimes that works in your favor if they forget to charge you for drinks!
Review Source:Irish Pub chain hits Tucson. Depends on what you are looking for. Bit crowded and full of the student crowd when students carouse - weekend nights. Sunday afternoon there have been music sessions the likes of which Tucson has never seen before. Not unusual for the musicians to outnumber the audience. Never been disappointed. The menu is dull and tiresome. A few "traditional" dishes and burgers.
5 stars for the Sunday music, 3 stars for bar = 4 stars.
It seems that the musicians are not quite the draw they were hoping and the sessions have not been happening. That was the draw for me especially in an Irish pub atmosphere.
Parking is a little difficult since it competes with the U, so paying for parking at the garage might be worth it.
They do have a snug if you want to order the girl drinks.
