I'm kinda confused by this place.

It had a lot of potential, but not playing the same EDM that other places were playing.  On the other hand, not that many people dancing in the small place.  On the other other hand, they played that song from the Venus shaver commercials (Bananarama - Venus).

Look for a dude trying to bring in people waiting outside Mansion.  Get in immediately and a band that gets you $5 shots!

This is the perfect place if you want to avoid cover and long lines and you want to dance and have average priced drinks. The guy:girl ratio is strongly leaning towards guys, but there are always a few cute girls who walk in. On top of that the bartenders are pretty smoking. Also, if you want to "live it up" you buy bottle service, it seems odd in a bar like this, but whatever.

Ended up here after dinner this past Saturday and although not my first time, I wanted to write my little review before I forget. Never have had a bad experience in this joint. Totally not like most South Beach places. I think if I were to describe it it would be like Purdy Lounge's less fun and attractive cousin, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The pros - Slightly cheaper drinks and wonderful music/vibe! All sorts of people frequent this place which is nice.

The cons - Bartenders are girls dressed in their lingerie (not complaining) that have absolutely NO CLUE what bartending entails. I ordered a drink and had to wait three minutes for my bartender to look at herself in the mirror, adjust her boobs, and put on a trucker hat backwards all the while pouting at herself until she deemed it was good enough to go back to work. Are you f*cking KIDDING me?

At any rate. This place is a good time. I do recommend it as your last "joint of the night."

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Every time i go i have a great time! Drinks are moderately priced compared to other places at the Beach. I love the music, they play a variety of different music. Also, it's right across the street of club Mansion =)
On Tuesdays they serve $1 beers. I totally love this place! i've introduced it to a bunch of my friends and everyone likes it as well =)

The music used to be rock, not it's barely top 40.  Attitude from bouncers and hosts abounds.

Unless you're here cause you didn't get in across the street, there's really no reason to be here.

Save yourself some time / Frustration

I've walked around the beach countless times, and always saw Automatic Slim's in the corner of my eye. It's pretty hard to miss, since it's all decked out in neon from the outside (as most places on the beach).

The service was absolutely terrible. I walked up to the bartender with as cordially as possible, and she just said "What do you want" I asked for drink options and price ranges and she just repeated her question. Then, on top of charging me $10 for cigarettes, she doesn't mention the $2 charge for using a card.

Then the ambiance. It is literally PACKED on the weekends. I dont see why, but people seem to like this place. The tables are covered in old cups, there's dancing couples in the middle rubbing up against you as you walk by, and the music is raised to the point that it's almost impossible to speak.

I'm no saint, but this place is grimier than what I enjoy.

Good times, ended up here around 1am on a Thursday Night, paid only a $5 cover to get inside which definitely isn't too bad for South Beach prices!

The place is definitely kinda small, but the vibe more than makes up for it! Definitely feels like a college bar with a slightly older crowd with a great DJ throwing on a mix of house, modern rock and hip hop.

Bartender was pretty cool, pretty attentive and took care of us all night! The dress code is chill/casual, can easily roll in here with beach gear i.e t shirts, board shorts and flip flops etc.

Tip: You know you've been here too long when grown MEN start poll dancing on the stripper pole in the back!!! When that starts to happen do yourself a favor and leave!!!

I've been putting off this review because it is evidence I am old.  Slims is officially an INSTITUTION on the beach.  This place has been open for 10 FREAKING YEARS.  On South Beach that is crazy impressive.

Many of you were in elementary school when this place opened (i'm about to cry) and the Tuesday nights here were legendary.  At the time the concept was insane for the beach - A no line, no cover, ROCK & ROLL bar - oh yeah with a stripper pole.  You know what they say - "If you build it they will come" so of course we've seen more pole dances here than happen at Scarletts...

Needless to say my friends and I spent enough money here to fund several hot bartender's college funds, partied with numerous bachelorettes, and killed even more brain cells here.

Over the years this place has never regained it's past glory but you can always count on getting in without a hassle even if you're swinging an all sausage fest.  There's always hot bartenders, relatively cheap drinks, the strip pole, and a good time to be had.

Stumbled upon this place after a night on the town and well....it happened to be Spring Break Week. The place was packed with tourists and overall everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and having a good time. The DJ was spinning a mix of hip hop, reggae and house. One very interesting fact about the layout of this place..they have a stripper pole! lol....yeah....very interesting.

Fun place, not as pricey as the other places in the area. The bartenders are very hot in a Miami kind of way. Both times I have been here I had a great time, and it will remain on my list for sobe spots to hang out at.

The decor is kind of retro funky style, but it's all new.

I don't need to recount my first trip here which my wife "Teresa K." has outlined for you. Chewable shot.... pass.

This place was a trip. We stopped here on the pub crawl we had for Husband's birthday. The music was hilarious and brought me back through all my teen years. Also the super hot bartenders were entertaining especially when one of them got on the bar, shook her bootie in my hubby's face and made him drink some terrible concoction that he literally says he had to chew to get down. Definitely and experience to say the least.

We stumbled upon this hole in the wall while trying to get to another club... there was a huge line outside Cameo and it started to rain... smart promoters immediately approached us and offered us shelter from the rain at this trendy bar, offering free shots for coming in... who could resist that offer?

So we went in and got a few shots from the bartender... it wasn't any premium liquor... and after a look around, we knew we weren't stayin much longer.

The decor was interesting... Crazy plane furniture, striper pole and different random street signs... makes you feel like you're lost in the twilight zone...   The place was EMPTY and the music wasn't very entertaining so after our free shots and the rain let up we were out and about again...

Never a line, never a cover!

Its a tiny little hole in the wall with hot bartenders who stand on top of the bar in short little skirts and pour alcohol straight into your mouth.

Prices are cheap for South Beach and we have never gotten a weak pour! In fact, one time it must have been a new bartender because my bf ordered a scotch neat and she filled up the entire cup, to the brim!

They play a lot of 80's music, the kind of stuff where everyone in the bar ends up belting out all of the words and dancing their happy a**** off all night long!

Oh, and the pole is pretty fun too! Reminds me of my good ole college days at Florida State!

I came here for a friends birthday and had a blast! I have to admit, when I first heard about this place and checked out the website, I wasn't too excited about it but by the time everyone was getting ready to go home, I didn't want to leave!!!
To start off, there isn't a cover charge and if you get there early enough you won't have to wait in line. We got there around 12 and it was still pretty empty so we were able to just walk in. The crowd of people there were unlike any other group you would find at other clubs/bars in South Beach. Everyone was really chill and laid back. We went on a Saturday and the DJ played everything from 80's to reggae to rock and everything in between! The bartenders and the girls who worked there were amazing and super friendly! I usually don't like to venture out to SoBe but definitely would if it were to go to automatic slims :D

What a great South Beach find... was told to check this place out while in Miami for an advertising conference and brought a group of 15 with us.

The atmosphere and music were awesome with a mix of music everyone could enjoy. The decor screamed White Trash Party meets South Beach and even included a full (albeit small) Airstream trailer as a seating area... just off to the side of the pole dancing area.

The bartenders were hot, friendly and attentive. Drink prices were average for South Beach but included $3 PBR's for the budget partier.

Will definitely make this a regular stop off in the future.

Again, this is another place I wouldn't normally go without being fueled up on a number of alcoholic beverages...... FYI, it's always a packed full of guys. I swear every time I've rolled in here it seems like I am 1 of 5 women in the place.....

I will go here if people suggest after a night of barhopping, however I would never decide just to have a night here. The place gets packed & from what I can remember the music is OK, but a number of my friends seem to really dig the place. So, if we're out & they're going, I'm going.... It's not fancy pants & no cover makes it an easy place to pop into late night.

Great time the first time we went on a weeknight, but then they wouldn't let us in because we had shorts on.

    LOL, really?

Other than that incident, the music, service, and crowd were cool.

Automatic Slims holds such a special place in my heart.
There are not many rock clubs to speak of in Miami, so to me this place is golden. I think what solidified it was when they once played Sublime's April 29, 1992. It was love at first sound.

Not pretentious, no cover, friendly bartenders (I know, gasp!) and absolutely ridiculously amazing music. And even if your favorite song isn't playing, you can always entertain yourself by watching crazy drunkards attempt to dance on the stripper pole at the back of the bar (unless you are one of them, which I have been, so no judgment here).

Whenever we are hanging out on the beach and aren't ready to go home yet, we always mosey our way to Automatic Slims and some how before we know it - it is 5:30am and we are the only ones left in the bar. Definitely a testament of any good party locale.

Trashy bars with 80s music? Hells ya! Automatic Slims is a great place to come in from the heat and enjoy some drinks in the cool AC. We stumbled here after getting sick of bars on Collins Ave. We literally stumbled in. We just saw an open bar with air conditioning, and no line. When we went in, we heard some awesome drunk music -- probably your Motley Crew or Poison type -- and decided we needed shots and drinks. This place was so much fun - and the bartenders (who were wearing close to nothing, even for South Beach standards) were very friendly.

We had so much fun here that we decided to head over to Mansion across the street. Turns out we drank a little too much at Automatic Slims! But, it make for a fun evening.

I love Automatic Slims! I have always had a fantastic time here.
If you ask me, the best night to come out here would be on a TUESDAY. Simply because Tuesdays are dollar beer nights, and I love beer for a dollar. Also, you can convince your friends that "don't have a lot of money", to come and spend at least five bucks. OH, and no cover either :)

    The music here is A+
A mix of retro, hip hop, reggae, rock, indie, something for everyone.
This place never fails to have a nice crowd.

Girls: You will not stop dancing all night long
Guys: The waitresses here dress really slutty
Girls & Guys: They have a strip pole!

I absolutely love this bar. The music is retro and indie pop with a fabulous decor to match. There is no cover at the door, and there is always a lively crowd. Mind you it's more of a bar than a club, since the dance floor and the whole place itself is fairly small.   Nevertheless, definitely one of my favorite bars in Miami!

** I recently went back to Slims these past Tuesdays for their $1 Beer ( Bud Select)  and $3 shot deals and I realized there is a $20 charge unless you know a promoter ( which i always have one) and every single guy must be accompanied by a girl, otherwise no entry unless buying a bottle. I went with my boyfriend and his friends were not able to get in because they each needed a girl. Pretty stupid if you ask me.  It gets really, really., REALLY packed. Don't even think about going through the crowd to go the rest room and good luck at the bar. A guy got mad at another guy who spilled his $1 beer and almost started a fight. Like seriously? If someone buys a bottle and picks the table where you are then  you gotta move. No ifs, ands, or buts about it **

This is a great spot to hit up last when bar hopping on the beach. There is no cover, no velvet ropes, no surly bouncers and music you can just rock out to. There is an elevated stripper pole for the ladies at the rear of the joint if you make it that far. Some drunk twit was on it forever and wasn't letting the ladies have full command and it would have been nice to see some security kick him off.

The beers aren't cheap and they add an automatic 18% to your bill so be careful. (Maybe that's what the automatic in name of the bar stands for?) The girls occasionally get on the bar and pour shots down your throat which is always fun (and not a bad view). This is definitely a spot to hit up when you're on the beach looking for just a good time.

Unpretentious, down to earth staff, and a very cool DJ playing good old rock tunes, and some of the best old school hip hop I've heard in a while. I danced all night and didn't sit down for more than 30 seconds ~ loved it!

    Big booty girls!!!

Hmmm...I had a WHOLE 'nother idea of what this place would be like. I thought it was going to be more, I don't know, grungy.

I was wrong. Not grungy at all. In fact, it was like most other clubs: loud and overly packed (we were packed like sardines in a can). I couldn't even hear what was playing it was just sooooo loud. AND it's small!

Yes, this place isn't fancy schmancy. Yes, this place isn't pretentious. Yes, you don't have to pay a cover to get in. No, I don't think I'll come back to this place.

Buck 15 is a MUCH better alternative and offers more or less the same kind of music, non-pretentious atmosphere, and no cover charge. AND it's bigger and you're not packed in like sardines!

Some places are destinations others merely pit stops Automatic Slims shouldn't be at the top of anyone's destination list and is most definitely just a place to go in between other venues.

The upside: there is no cover and no velvet rope nonsense. The music is typical popular dance, classic rock, tinges of hip hop and reggae. The crowd is composed of woohoohooing chicks in town for their last weekend of singledom, people settling post Mansion debacle, and locals who consider themselves regulars which usually means they know someone who works there.

The trailer and stripper pole remind me of the Pawn Shop with it's airplane and school bus kitsch.

Come here if you want to party like an out of towner, are on a pub crawl of sorts, just want to go dancing to popular party tunes, or can't figure out where else to go.

I love this place because you can have a good time and not care. This is the alternative to the mega-clubs and being fabulous.

Girls just want to have fun and this is where you can.

I would recommend having a birthday party there and making it a "White Trash" theme in the real trailer. TOO much fun!

    I love this place !!!!

Like other have said, no velvet rope crap here. But arrive early, that before 11 pm on SOBE to be able to walk right in, else you may have to wait but no longer that 15 minutes.

Even while you wait outside the doorman have taken drink orders while you wait in line so you know you are getting in soon.

Guys, here is a tip. Come with ladies with you or make friends with some in line. Ladies get first shot into the place and you can roll in with them no problem after 11 pm.  Or Just say your friends with Bob ...lol

The DJ's play THE BEST mix of music on the Beach period and the DO have every remix of Sweet Child of Mine mixed with 50 Cents over some reggaton beat stuff you could ever want to hear.

Tip 2: Come on Saturday because the is one " lady " who always comes and puts on a show on the stripper stage. When she is done all the chics are doing too.

The place is not big and very packed but I think that adds to the intimacy. I can get into Mansion anythime I want but would rather be at SLIMs.
The staff is friendly and the totally out COYOTE - COYOTE UGLY because you could get hammered on the free  shots from the SLIM girs all night.

In fact, I am going tonight see ya there.

PS I did go last Saturday night and you can see some photo including Bob trying to help the guy who came by himself late get in.

Rating strife:  I really only wanna give it a 2.5 due to my clausterphobic experiences I have each time I come here.  It got a 3 because its the original Automatic Slims, so I have to give it credit...  :)

Ok, anyhow...  Automatic Slims is a great place to hang out when its not so crowded that the body heat overwhelms your senses!!!  The Automatics in Fort Lauderdale (review to follow) is a WAY better venue and atmosphere, due to the simple fact that its 10x the size of the one in SoBe.

However, in defense of the Beach...  Here goes...  ;-)

It's not at all supposed to be a Dive Bar...  Just an FYI.  Automatics was created as a Rock and Roll bar that is supposed to be fun and laid back.  They have girls that walk around half naked pouring drinks right out of bottles and down into your throat, while dancing around so that you can see straight up their skirts...

They have the all traditional Stripper Pole for those Girls Gone Wild moments!!!  And of course they have flashy signs that say random things...  Like "Trailer Park".  (I swear its not a Dive Bar!)  They play great selections of music, from Guns N Roses to Coldplay to Kanye West!  So it's always a great time to shake your butt and have fun with your friends!!!  You can't go wrong here...  No cover, no velvet ropes, no obnoxious bouncers...  What's not to like about it!

So you ask yourself, why such a low review?  I only gave it 3 stars because of its lack of space and size.  I'm not that short, but I swear the last time I was there (Saturday) I couldn't breathe!!!  It was sooo packed (where were the Fire Marshalls that night?!?!) that I litterally had to shove people out of the way to make it to the bathroom.  I felt like I was drowning in people...  Not fun!

I've been there other times and had the same experience, but usually I've been able to make my way to a table and the feeling of clausterphobia settles down...  Unfortunately that was not the case Saturday and I ended up leaving after finishing my 1 beer....

I guess the best bet is to get there early so you can get a table and make some space!  I was so jealous of the people that were sitting and actually had room to breath and talk!  :)

    Definitely fun though!!!

Good dive bar in Sobe... great music, reasonably well priced drinks and a crowd bent on having fun.

This is an awesome alternative to the SoBe velvet rope bull***t .  Seriously, where else will they play my fav song ever, Sweet Child o'Mine 3 times (THANK YOU) in one night?  Really though, the music is so varied there is something for everyone, GreenDay, Bon Jovi, ACDC... sigh.. my kinda place.

Good drinks at good prices, good music...its SWEET.

A must go to if you want something different.. One thing though, its TINY.  Get there early, its tons of fun.

I fuckin' like this place... if you are tired of BS and don't want to dress up very nice to hang out PLUS spend a few hundreds.... bring a one hundred dollars bill and drink until u can't take it anymore.

The bouncer situation is true... he makes people wait.... but once u are in... u can have fun....

They play all kinda music..... even country on Wednesdays..... haha not for me though.

The bartenders are hot BTW .... :)

The best place to go when you dont' want to deal with anything but loud music & good drinks.  Automatic Slims is small & as a homey as a bar with scantily-clad girls in plaid can be.
Become a regular & the bouncer lets you in with a hug.  Come after 11:30 pm & expect to wait as if it were a silly SoBe club but don't feel like a loser; you're just too late for the party that's been going on for an hour. Stick around & wait for the fire marshall to leave & you'll enjoy every second you're there.
Entertainment can be found on the bar or at the stripper pole in the back.

    Holy $hit!

There's a lot of hot girls at this trailer trash disguised bar!

You walk in wearing whatever, you don't pay a dime, and you're in the heart of SoBe. You're mixed in with European tourist, hot locals (who I'm convinced must all work at a local strip club), and normal people like you and me. It's truly a bar in every sense of the word, except that it blasts mists all over the place once in awhile which is great for on-lookers.

There's really no frills here people, a lot of hot people in a very real setting. Highly recommended, except for the pricing, but hey, that's the price of admission!

    This place rocks!

One long 'booth' lined one of the walls, and the multiple tables in front of it had extra chairs for extra people. If that wasn't enough, they ALSO had an extra ledge on top of the booth for even MORE bodies. ORGY FREE-FOR-ALL! BRING LOTS OF PEOPLE! YOU'LL ALL FIT!

The bartender was nice; the shot girls were AWESOME. Who doesn't want a raspberry Skyy shot poured into their mouth for FREE? I dare you to find someone (and if you find someone that's allergic to raspberries OR vodka, that SO doesn't count).

The music totally rocked the house. I remember it being an interesting variety (current rock, old school rock, some hip hop, a dance remix or two...), but all in all, I found myself bopping my head or singing along to just about EVERY DANG SONG I heard (or at least, that I can remember).

While drunkenly waiting in line for the bathroom with a friend, we received texts that the other half of our group had already left because someone was throwing up outside. FUDGE! It was a sad day when I had to leave, but golly gee whiz, I had a blast! I'm def. hitting this place up when I return to Sobe!

I love this place!!!  The attitude level is way lower than at neighboring clubs... perfect for those days when you don't feel like smiling for 30 minutes to the bouncer, sucking in your belly, and trying to look airheaddy enough to get into the club fast.  Perfect for when you just feel like going out and HAVING FUN instead of sipping overpriced martini's while bouncing to ticky-ticky repetitive house music.
They have a great mix of 80s, rock and alternative!!

Am I the only one that sees this place for what it is?  I'm no fan of the manufactured pretentiousness of the "South Beach Scene," either, but Automatic Slim's is just as manufactured, only in the other direction.

Think Coyote Ugly in New York - a meticulous recreation of what some slick marketing guy thought a "crazy, locals' dive bar" would look like.

The irony is that laid-back locals looking for a cool, eclectic soundtrack and a casual but still hip bar don't go here at all.  They go to Poplife (the Saturday night party) at the District, just across the causeway.

Automatic Slim's is the Nickelback of rock/dive bars - just as image-conscious, pretentious, and poseur as K-Fed, but in a different genre.

This post (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thephatphree.com%2Ffeatures.asp%3FStoryID%3D239%26SectionID%3D11&s=69c0470cb96d25dff6c11f83c87e78c479c846e7316dffde783b7fff24c4a860" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.thephatphree.…</a>) perfectly encapsulates the average clientele.

I went here pretty early on Saturday night (10-ish) and it wasn't busy yet.  About an hour later there was a good size crowd of chill people.  The DJ was AWESOME, playing the most random but well-mixed music I've heard in a long time.

Booth seating is available with a ledge up top for extra bodies, which was perfect for larger groups.  We were lucky enough to get a table, which came with a really really hot waitress.  This place has a bunch of them.
Best part: Waitresses & bartenders pouring Skyy into your mouth from on top of the bar.  (Please tip, CUZ IT WAS FREE!!)
Great (and potentially cheap) weekend night for South Beach!
Oh, and an update: Kristina B's review sounds eerily familiar.  I guess I am forgetting some, since I was the one puking outside.  I said the free shots were great!
