My fiancee and I have been to Bar Nineteen 12 (notice the confusing name) several times in recent months. The Manager and staff are even beginning to recognize us, which may or may not be a good sign. We love the Beverly Hills Hotel, the palm trees as you drive up, the red carpet, the glamour, what can I say ?
The bar really consists of two distinct eco-systems. Inside there is the bar and several low tables. That's where you go to snack, drink and listen to the terrific music 1912 offers just about every night of the week. Check out the website for an ever changing schedule or take pot luck. We often hang out at the bar itself, which is right next to the music and the "dance floor", which can get crowded but always fun.
Outside is the terrace, in an L shaped with more tables and sofas. Perfect for lounging, overlooking the hotel gardens. You can't see the musicians, but you can listen. Â We love the terrace but always slip inside when the music beckons.
Everybody is very elegant at the 1912, from the guests to the bar men and the cocktail waitresses (apologies if that's the wrong term) with their retro look.
Nonetheless, the place does take a little navigating. We can't help feeling sometimes that it's more like a private club with insiders and outsiders, with us more in the latter category. Most nights tables get reserved up quickly so either plan in advice, or arrive at the bar early (8 or so) to guarantee yourself a stool. Otherwise you might be standing most of the night. As I write this, we're primping to go to a Kentucky Derby afternoon at the 1912. We have a reservation, but I'm still uneasy that they won't have a table for us or something.
Obviously, this is the Beverly Hills Hotel and none of this glamour comes cheap. When the bill comes, we just remember what fun we just had and sign.
