The only reason I gave two stars is because our server was amazing. The food on the other hand, was not. We had a group of about 10 people and the server we had was so friendly and was always on top of getting us refills. When the food came out, half of it was cold and half was just not very good.
Review Source:I should give Barley's 5 stars, I love the food, I love the service, I love the beer, but the hosting and management staff have a policy of not seating customers even when there are open tables (I think this is corporate policy since I have been to other KC Hopps restaurants and have had  the same experience, even when the restaurant is not crowded.) The excuse the hosting staff give is that they are letting the kitchen staff catch up. So I have to stand and wait, rather than sit and have a beer. I would rather be seated and told there might be a wait for food, than stand around in my coat feeling like a I am a nuisance to the kitchen staff. There were other customers waiting that were equally annoyed by this policy. I have a KC Hopps reward card, if this policy continues I will cash it in and find other restaurants in the area that see serving customers as a privilege more than an annoyance to kitchen staff.
Review Source:Came for lunch on a Mon afternoon during restaurant week.  Place was pretty empty, but all the servers/bartenders were great and didn't make a big deal about me eating alone.  One of my favorite things about Barley's Right from the getgo was the HUGE!/ Gorgeous full bar!  The service is really warm and they've got a  great selection of beer.  But alas, work = no alcohol, so I stuck with my of hot water ( what can I say, gotta have steady $$ for more Foodie Days ;) )
Ordered langostino & curry risotto croquettes, braised duck papardelle, and sea salt caramel Creme Brulee
Wow! were the curry croquet s were yummy, but the papardelle was just -meh...- ( to be fair though, I'm not a huge fan of tomato based soups) and the creme brulee was good too, but not " sea salt caramel" creme brulee, it twas just regular CB with some caramel as a side motif.
I really enjoyed the Sunrise Wheat that the bartender suggested. Â The guy knew his brews well. The place looks like its been recently remodeled and the decor is nice. Â The service could have been a little better. I'll certainly go back simply because they have a wonderful selection of brews. Â Looks like it gets a decent happy hour crowd.
Review Source:What's up with the wait staff here?
I feel like the complaints of the wait staff is a reoccuring trend; hence, the lower ratings.
We had our menus closed and it took about 20 minutes for the waitress to loop back around to take our order. My coworkers and I went on a Friday afternoon around 1:30pm...so we even beat the lunch crowd! Odd.
The food was okay. Not bad, not great.
Normally this Barley's is 4 stars. This must have just been an off day. The food was 4 stars but the service was pretty bad. We heard this Barleys was remodeled so we came to check it out. We sat there for 10 minutes before the server came around and told us he would be right with us. 5 minutes later he brought us waters and asked what we wanted to drink. He wasn't familiar with any of the 100+ beers that they have. Everytime time he visted the table the words "I'm sorry" came out of his mouth. When he finally got around to taking our order he set the dirty dishes that were in his hand on our table while he wrote down our order. By the time the food came I was ready to just leave. The food was great. I don't know if the server was just new or not that great all together. It won't stop me from coming back but next time I will sit in the bar area where I always get great service.
Review Source:Ok, Barley's you got five from me! Â
Well, I knew it could get a little better, but this newly-remodeled Barley's is pretty fantastic!! Â After being closed for a month or so, they have finally revealed! Â The new decor is stunning. Â The wall has been knocked out between the restaurant and bar sections, and that weird half bar wall has been removed from the bar and bar dining sections. In the end, what they have is a contemporarily huge, open place. Â Color is a dark green with dark, sleek woodwork and new artwork. I posted a couple of pics. Â The atmosphere is near perfect for me. Â As well, now two big garage doors open up onto the patio. Â This will be soooooo awesome on a summer evening.
Additionally, they have some new beer selections. Â
The only suggestion I could make for improvement is to put a big chalkboard up between the garage doors and write the seasonals and specials. I miss that.
So, way to go Barley's! Â I hope the crowd remains the same, and this will be my favorite Kansas-side "spot" for sure!
My friend had previously ate here before, and it was right across the street. So by going on his recommendation, we check out this place. Inside seems very huge. Our waitress placed us in a booth. We came here around 3'o clock and it was not busy at all. Knowing that, we would assume we would get good service.
That was not the case. Getting our order was quick, but after that we were long forgotten. The place had only 2-3 groups there on a Sunday afternoon. There was no reason to ignore the people there.
The menu itself is ridiculously huge. I mean an old person could read the menu without their glasses. Prices looked way too expensive for the food they were offering. This place didn't seem like the type to do that for a bar and grill. Usually the food should be cheap, and people would buy their beer for the most part.
I had ordered the Kobe beef hamburger medium, and my friend ordered the same thing. He asked for the calamari for our appetizer. It came in a timely matter with dishes. It was fairly good for what it was, but seriously 9 dollars for an app? Usually you can get the same thing for about 5-6 dollars.
Our food probably came out about 15 minutes later after we finish the appetizer. I was impressed, presentation wise it was plated well, and the hamburger itself was very huge. The beef was very good and had a smokey flavoring to it. Not sure why, but the first half of the burger was medium, and the rest of it seemed done. I like my hamburgers a bit medium/medium rare to get the flavor of the burger. I should have chosen a different cheese, because the blue cheese was over powering the flavor of the burger. The bun was very nice and looked freshly baked. Fries that came with it were very plentiful and huge.
Food wise, they did pretty good for themselves. They could be 2-3 dollars cheaper, which would bring in more regulars.
Service wise, they need to work on that. If it's not busy, at least observe your customers to see if they need service. There was no reason for it to be so lazy about it. Improve their service more, and I would have gave this place a 4.
I have always been a fan of Barleys. Â The service has never been outstanding but the food is very good and consistently good quality. Â My favorite menu item is the buffalo chicken wrap but I have had many other things and they are all good. Â If you belong to their club you get 1/2 price apps Mon - Fri from 4-6 which is a great deal.
Here's the down side.  They have also been kind of expensive for what they are -- a bar and grill.  I just went there Saturday night and they have a new menu which means $$$$$  My wrap used to be $8, now it is $10.  $10 for a sandwich and fries is  too much in my opinion.  I'll continue to go there for the 1/2 price apps and boulevard wheat but probably won't be eating a full meal there.  For our family of 4 with no beverages it was over $50 for bar food :-(  Makes me sad.
New menu equals higher prices.
I have ordered their club sandwich many times and was shocked to see it offered at $11. Â It is NOT worth $11. Â This time I ended up ordering Ahi Tuna Sliders which I thought would be worth $11. Â Wrong. Â According to the menu, the tuna was supposed to be seared rare. Â It looked like tuna out of the can. Â The sliders were essentially Ahi Tuna Cakes on a cold sticky bun with a micro salad appropriately named because it was tiny. Â This should be on the appetizer side of the new menu not in the sandwich part.
Barley's used to be my "go-to" place but I'm not sure it's worth it anymore.
Took the family out to eat here on a Tuesday evening, mainly because it was one of several dozen local restaurants in the Kansas City area that was supporting Harvesters for a week. Â We got there early and were seated right away. Â They had a special menu available for those patrons who wanted to support Harvesters (10% of the bill goes to them) so the wife and I both chose the mixed green salad with bleu cheese, walnuts and a vinegrette dressing. Â She ordered the scallops and I ordered the skirt steak, medium-rare, with horseradish mashed potatoes. Â For dessert, I had apple pie ala mode and she had a blueberry tart. Â Our daughter got a kid's grilled chicken sandwich with green beans. Â Overall, we were quite pleased with our dinners. Â The price was $30 per meal, which got you the salad, entree with vegetable, and dessert. Â At first blush that seems a little high, but $3 goes to charity, and the entrees were first-class. Â I thought the skirt steak and mashed potatoes were spot-on. Â My wife got 4 good-sized grilled scallops, and she said they were as awesome tasting as they looked. Â Even our daughter's grilled chicken sandwich looked good. Â I tried a few small bites of the chicken: it had a little extra flavor from marinating, and it wasn't dry in the least. Â Overall I'd say the portions were just about right, although I thought the entrees could have had just a tad more to them for the price.
The wait staff was attentive and did a good job.
Sad to say, we did not try any beers this time, but that just leaves us something to draw us back even more. Â
I'd say check out Barley's in Shawnee. Â I can't believe we waited this long to try it ourselves.
I am not a drinker, so the "Brewhaus" aspect of Barley's is lost on me, but I can appreciate a place that carries FreeState Ad Astra on tap. Â My husband likes it, and it's not a standard beer to have on tap, unless you are AT FreeState. Â The food is also pretty good as well. Â It's not JUST standard bar food, and they have seasonal specials. Â Like right now, you could get a duck confit salad. Â I haven't tried it, and don't know if it's any good, but hey, they try. Â They have small plates, salads, pizzas... Â So if you want casual but not crappy, this is probably a good stop.
They can get busy, and the service can be slow when there's a TON of people standing around and drinking in the bar, but on a normal night, I've never noticed a problem.
I came here last night for a friend's birthday party and I will not be back. Â It was so terrible. Â Our server was too concerned with a football game and she was a little slow in the head.
I went to the bar to order a drink because she disappeared. Â I walked up to the bar that had only two frantic looking men behind it tripping over one another as if they had no clue what to do next. Â I finally got someone to recognize that I wanted a drink and ordered a french martini. Â The guy that made it had no idea what it even was so he had to look at a book. Â I give him credit though, he did pretty well for never having made a martini before. Â
The food was also revolting. Â The spinach and artichoke dip had a half inch layer of grease sitting on top and the chips were stale. Â The chicken strips were mediocre. Â
The last, and worst part, was the horrible country band they had playing so loud no one could hear anyone else. Â This place sucks.
Oh, and I watched as a server wiped his nose with his hand and then picked up silverware and gave it to someone. Â Sick.
If you are into beer then this place has to be at the top of your list. Â I believe they have over 75 beers on tap. Â And many hard to find beer in bottle.
The food is as good as the day the first Barley's opened. Â I regularly eat and love the strawberry pecan salad and the Don Corleone Pizza. (which has a very thin crust very much like the crusts you find in Europe). Â Normally I do not love these thin crust pizzas, but every once in awhile a place makes it work. Â And Barley's does that with that dish even still 15 years later.
The service at this location has always been attentive and knowledgeable about the food and the beer. Â They are quick correct problems and adapt to your needs.
This place is my neighborhood bar and I really feel lucky to have such easy access to this place all these years.
Cheers & Kampai to Barley for keeping the Brewhaus stocked with all the Beers you could ever want! I went here during a Business trip & went here every night haha! =D
Micro brews, macro brews, and imports from all corners of the globe make up their impressive selection of 99 beers on tap. From my understanding Barley's has THE LARGEST selection of draft beers in Kansas City - including locally brewed favorites. The Bartenders are nice & attentive.
After a few brews you may find yourself following The Yellow Brick Road with your Ruby Slippers...Good Times at Barley's Brewhaus!
My good friend recently moved to this area. I had a heck of a time finding it as I am one of the only people (it seems) who does not have either a GPS system or a very good idea of KC geography. But I'm learning! I have certain areas down pat. And I finally have experienced the weird highway of 435.
Anyways, after seeing my friend's new digs, we decided to grab a drink in his new 'hood. He suggested this place or Jose Peppers - I felt that Barley's was probably the better pick.
We sat on the patio as the weather has been lovely and ordered some drinks. There are quite a few beers but I'm boring and ordered my favorite Blvd pale ale.
We decided to get a snack and ordered the meat & cheese plate. Yes, I'm veg but I don't mind picking around meat. However, this plate sucked in my opinion. The cheese was not quality. I didn't like anything on it except the mustard, and what am I to do - eat mustard off a plate with a spoon? I'm a lady ;)
Plus I already ate dinner (Lulu's) so I pushed my plate away and contented myself with my beer. The server asked how the food was and I told him my opinion and he was very apologetic and asked if he could get us something else. I tried to explain that it was just me, not the food, as my friend was glad to eat the entire plate himself.
I noticed that there are a few vegetarian friendly items on the menu that I would not be adverse to sampling should I return.
As far as neighborhood bars go, the Brewhaus is a bit fancy. And a bit pricey.
