It's been a while since I ventured out in the Old Port scene now that I have a kid.
Thanks to the Big Easy and the amazing platform they provide for local music, I didn't need to be a complete waste case like the last time I was was there.
The Kenya Hall Band and Friends Stevie Wonder Experience is all the chemical stimulation I need. Â The bartenders were awesome, and the place was packed but still you were able to move around fine. Â I liked how diverse the crowd was - 20s up to baby boomer types. Â That's f*&^ing rad!
Not sure if the sound system was the bands or Big E's, but it was great!
Kind of cool, cheap PBRs, a lot of beards and plaid, not much diversity -- seems to apply both to the Big Easy and Maine, in general.
We saw Momma's Boomshack, they weren't half bad. Â $10 cover, we were able to get seats off to the side even though it was pretty crowded when we got there. Â There was some AMAZING dancing showcased by some older gentlemen who just DGAF.
drunk. that was my state of mind when i came in but i was so glad to be there. large space. monday night. good musicians jammin. it was funk/jam night so it was interesting to see the local community of musicians go on stage and do their thing.
even though i was definitely not sober i drank more. a couple of vodkas to be completely honest. i dont remember how much i paid for those but i dont care cause i had a damn good time, mingled with the super friendly locals.... seriously, you guys are strangely friendly, nobody is this friendly in miami except for hookers but they just want your money and will give you stds for you to keep as a souvenir.
the night was a success and how do i know that? because i woke up next day in my hotel room and on my night table i found a half eaten whoopie pie. i was puzzled and then it hit me. this was a gift from a sweet girl i met at the big easy who wanted to introduce me to portland culture. gracias mami. when you in miami, i will get you pastelitos de guayaba y un batido de mamey. for real!
Great small venue, there's nowhere where you don't get a great view of the band. Sound was well mixed, full, but not overly loud. Ample bar real estate for the full crowd that was there. If you do want to take a step back from the action, there are some tucked-away seating sections where you can relax, enjoy a beer, and groove to the tunes.
Review Source:How could this place have been there so long without me knowing? Â I'm an adult. Â I don't go out for "nightlife" much because I don't really like kids music and too many drunks, which the Old Port neighborhood has plenty of. Â Despite this, I was at the Big Easy tonight to hear Lady Zen and her incredible band do Bessie Smith/Laverne Baker as well as their original music. Â There is live (and probably mostly excellent) music there virtually every night. Â AND it is not so loud that it blasts you out the door.... Blues, Soul, some hip hop. Â Friendly bartenders and patrons - nice relaxed vibe. Â There's even space to dance it it's not too crowded. Â Cover price is more than reasonable for what is offered. Â Highly recommended if you want to appreciate good music in a relatively intimate setting. Â No heavy metal here, fortunately!
