One of my favorite in Parsippany. Me and my friends like this place and we visit here several times a month. Last Tuesday, I was there to celebrate the B'Day of one of my friend and it went awesome. The waitress Nicole was very nice to us and she was prompt to our needs. Overall a very good place to hangout.
Review Source:Went on a Saturday night to see a friends band play. Â Sat at the bar. Â Had the blackthorn salad ($12). Â Nice and fresh. Good start. Â Moved onto the blackthorn chicken sandwich on this incredible brioche roll. Was like butter! Â Oh, and it had bacon and cheddar cheese on it. Â Bonus. Â Very very tasty. Â Ended with the chocolate lava cake desert ($6). Â Awesome, moist, and pretty rich. Â Came with vanilla ice cream. Â Bar service was great! Â Would I go back? Â Yep! Â Might try it again tomorrow.
Review Source:Yup. This place falls in the Irish Pub/Bar/Restaurant category (like we need more of these).
This is a retardedly easy concept to deliver on. Just play some Dropkick Murphys, pour some Guinness and serve some fish and chips (and maybe a reuben or two-here and there-easy, done). Therefore my expectations are set rather high.
Let me start by saying that this is the closest bar/restaurant to my office. As a result, we are here more than I would like. Impromptu office gatherings or a quick bite with a vendor... "lets go to Blackthorn." For some reason, I always go?
The service is meh.
The food is meh (but on the upper limits of meh).
The drinks are meh (if you are buying beer). BUT they are an ABSOLUTE RIP OFF if you are purchasing spirits. Please refer the Federal Fines and lawsuit they recently incurred due to their substitution of bottom shelf spirits in place of top shelf spirits. WHO DOES THAT???????
Ultimate Pro: Their fries, although frozen, are f@#king delicious!
Ultimate Con: They are Con artists that will sell you well drinks out of top shelf bottles. SMH.
Average, just average.
I went with the server's suggestion as to (what she called) "the house specialty." Â If that particular dish represented their very best, I guess I should be glad that I didn't order something else off of the menu!
We were seated in the area just inside the front door: very noisy, not lighted quite good enough, and little by way of elbow room was made available.
In summary, neither the food nor that nebulous thing known as "ambiance" came close to reaching the point where you would begin to think that maybe, just maybe, the prices being charged were in line with what was being delivered in return.
Went there for drinks after work and felt that for happy hour it's an OK spot. Â They do have regular specials in addition to some that happen on certain days of the week.
We ordered some sliders and some fries and  even through it wasbar food - it wasn't really that appetizing.  The burgers were underwhelming - like how a McDonald cheeseburger looks like compared to the ad.  Not what you expected.
And the fries were not the best I had - and I know good fries.
But the service was great and the beer selection was decent. Â
Maybe dinner is better?
This is a dependable place for a quick lunch during the business day or for drinks after work with colleagues. Â The menu is on the gastropub side -- Americanized Irish fare with a good selection of burgers and bar muchies. Â Good prices and atmosphere, and the service is generally spot on.
Review Source:Terrible service, or is it no service at all?. Â I stopped in for dinner tonight and was seated in the restaurant. Â I was there for over 5 minutes with no recognition at all from the server that visited the table behind me twice. Â
They must not have been too busy --- another server was chatting with the hostess as I was leaving. Â There are plenty of places to get food on route 46, and I would rather go someplace that values my business.
Nicest bar in Parsippany. Â The bartenders are personable and hospitable. Â The food is awesome. Â The burger and fries are amazing and the Irish food is great too. Â They usually have either a decent cover band or a dj after 10pm on weeknights so its a toss up cause I'm not into the dj dance party stuff but that just me. Â If you want good, classic Irish pub with a good mix of people and friendly service then definitely check it out if you are around and say hi if you see me there. Â You can bring the family or bring a friend/date or go alone and always feel welcome. Â There is a jukebox, big round bar with table off to the side and separate dining room. Â The only thing I would change is the bar stools, they are hard and wooden but what are you gonna do? Â You'll see what I mean, sometimes I just like to stand but definitely go and and try the french onion soup and/or the shepards pie cause you won't find it anywhere that does a better job than Blackthorn!
Sometimes I go alone but I've brought my family and friends here and they all say the food is amazing, which it is.  The beer selection is good, they have the best of the American beers (Sam Adams) and a few micro brews as well (Magic Hat).  If they had open mic nights here (not karaoke) then I would come even more often than I already do.  Best bar in the area, hands down.  Be good to those guys behind the bar, Jimmy and Slim amongst the other bartenders cause they are the best there is!  All in all, a great place to relax, meet up with friends, watch the game, hear the better "cover acts" in the area and eat some great food.  Their kitchen is usually open late too which is huge bonus.
My family and I enjoyed lunch and suggest trying the fish and chips -- crispy, beer-battered and perfect with malt vinegar, or the Celtic burger with Irish bacon & cheddar with Guinness sauce on a Brioche bun. A bread pudding made from Irish Soda Bread is topped with caramel and whipped cream. It's just the perfect thing to finish a fine luncheon. Â Beautiful restaurant inside and out. We will definitely visit again!"
Review Source:I must say that I am very impressed with this Jersey joint. More and more I find myself starting to become a fan of dirty Jersey. Blackthorn's is a step in the right direction!
I am reviewing it solely on the bar as I only consumed alcohol while here.
Upon entering you are enveloped by a massive space which seems quite welcoming in spite of its size. There are well designed booths along the outer perimeter with the bar in the center. With about 40-50 seats at the bar, there is a formidable about of space so that it really doesn't seem crowded, even when it is. There are 8 flat screen TV's (that I counted) all the better to watch MNF. The bartenders are very nice and quite knowledgeable. There is a domestic beer special during MNF, $2.50 for a pint! They also carry a wide array of Whiskey which we sampled. Apparently Jameson has more than one label. In fact they have four! And we tried them all! I highly recommend the gold label and the black.
Talk with Jim the bartender, he will steer you in the right direction.
i came in on a friday night with some friends on a friday night, looking to eat drink and be merry before the night's festivities. it's a large space so i'd like to think that you would hardly have to wait for a table - we didn't have to wait, which was a huge plus! our waitress was super friendly and attentive and our food and drink came out in a timely manner. lots of pumpkin-esque specials in october - variety is a plus! we indulged on the reuben croquettes for an appetizer and i absolutely recommend them!!! their french onion soup was pretty good - not the best i've ever had, but i was happy i ordered it. their portions are pretty generous, their french fries are crisp and delicious. i have absolutely no complaints about this place - it's a great place to hang if you're looking to kick back with a beer and some friends.
Review Source:We went here for a friend's birthday and it was a pretty decent venue. We got pretty much all the appetizers on the menu and they were all fairly good. I was a bit surprised at the poor selection of beers there, given that its an Irish pub, but a friend told me that they concentrate more on their liquor selection. I'm not sure why those 2 selections have to be mutually exclusive, but that's just nitpicking.
Anyway, I got the bangers and mash as an entree, and I wasn't very impressed with it. The quantity was good but it wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked. Friends got the Chicken Murphy though and they were very happy with it. It seems like this is the standout dish at the Blackthorn.
It does get very busy and loud here on the weekends, since I was hoarse from shouting to make myself heard at the table after about 2 hours. An honorable mention must go out to the wait staff though. They were polite and attentive from the beginning all the way to the end. I really haven't seen such great customer service in a while.
My best friend lives 2 mins away and I am a frequent dinner of this restaurant. Â Over the past month they changed the menu, made portions smaller, and last nights dinner took the cake. I ordered a long island ice tea, and my friend ordered a peach martini, both drinks were made wrong. Â Mine was sour, and her tasted like a grapefruit. Â Then the manager came over and re made our drinks. Â They were much better. Â Then we order dinner, a salad and a app. Â the app we ordered was the sampler, well it was much smaller then in the past. Â we ate 2/3s of the app and 1/3 of the salad before I found the broken glass in the hummus. Â We called over the manger, and said we lost our appetite, and do not wish to eat anything else, in fear it might have glass in it. Â He wanted to buy us another round ( good if we were not driving) and i told him this. Â Just buy my drink, and take off the app. Â He only took off the app that had the glass in it. Â we did not finish our salad, and our bill still came to 37.00 bucks. Â for 2 drinks and a salad... umm something is very wrong. Â I am paying over 30 bucks and found glass in my food... not happy.. will never be back...
Review Source:Another awesome Irish pub! Â I really do love coming here with friends to either hang out at the bar for a night out, have a sit down dinner, or simply stop in for a quick happy-hour beer.
I will say that depending on who is tending bar your Guinness pour might not be perfect, but the bartenders ARE very attentive and will make sure you're being treated right-which is one of the reasons I love this place. Â The food at the bar and in the dining area is always great, though when the place is packed service can get a little slow. Â I totally recommend the Guinness onion soup as a starter-gets a big WOW from me. Â The burgers, bar fare, and entrees have NEVER disappointed and The Chicken Murphy or Fish and Chips are out of this world. Â
The only reason Blackthorn doesn't get five stars is that when it is packed, and especially when they have a band, it gets too 'close' for my comfort...even if you are parked around a corner of the bar. Â Friendly service, delicious food, tvs all around the bar area, and a great beer selection (love a place with Smithwick's on tap)...stop in at Blackthorn and have a Great time!!!
We were passing through Parsippany and stopped for dinner here, and I really liked it! Â Great food - had the Chicken Murphy based on another reviewer's post, and it was awesome! Â Chicken was a little dry, but the sauce definitely made up for it. Â Oh, and you HAVE TO try that soda bread pudding... it will change your life! Â
The service was just slow enough to think "hm, where's my food?" for a couple minutes before actually getting it. Â But we had a very nice and accomodating server. Â It's a typical pub atmosphere - maybe a bit more of a sports bar feel. Â We didn't try the beers on tap, so can't comment on that, but the food was very good.
Food quality for a Saturday night was awful. Â The chicken nachos were poor. Â For starters, the cheese was in liquid form. Â The sour cream, pico de gallo, and guacamole was insufficient to the amount of chips. Â The chicken was tasteless. Â The entrees arrived and the "rib eye" didn't look like any of the countless rib eyes I have enjoyed in other places before. Â The steak was cooked to perfection, a beautiful medium rare. Â However, the steak was not seasoned with any salt, pepper or anything. The steak was so tough to cut through, they would be better off serving steaks with a hack saw instead of a knife.
Review Source:I was told they have a great Guinness pour...I think not! Or at least from the bartender that served me...a couple of times.
I do like a few things about this place:
Their bar area is spacious and has a new feeling. Lighting is darkish so be prepared to look at the menu with a flashlight (kidding but sort of).
They have plenty of TV's and I happened to be there during a Devils game and the place was swarming with fans. Bruce Driver was sitting next to me the whole time and I had no idea until it was announced.
They have a good selection of beers and place has a beater crowd than the one in Kenilworth.
Didn't like: their food (only had their nachos with chili on the side). The chili tasted so bad...I mean like it was rancid. Plenty of chips but not a lot of cheese. Weak!
As I mentioned before the Guinness pour was disappointing but was delicious enough to drink.
Atmosphere: Very good. Younger crowd but with sprinkles of older as well. Older guys (much older than me) which made me feel young...
Food: Not good. I am basing this on the other BT as well.
Prices: Not bad. They had beer specials which was cool. Guinness is about $6 which I have become accustomed to .
Service: Very good. Attentive and friendly.
I will definitely be returning to try some more food since the atmosphere was great.
I think Blackthorn will be on the regular rotation of places my husband and I frequent. Went there last night what a fun place. We met a friend who is here from the UK for dinner and stayed till after midnight. Had to wait a bit for a table but no big deal lots of room at the bar and a big selection of draft beers and different games on big screen TVs kept us occupied. For dinner we tried a few Irish favorites, chicken pot pie, steak & guinness pie, and chicken Murphy. All entrees were delicious  my friend had the peanut butter pie for dessert and we didn't hear him speak while he inhaled it so that was good too.  They make all kinds of special coffees. I had a Blackthorn which had majlis, Bailey's & amaretto in it. Yum!
We didn't realize they had live music so we move to the bar and the band began to play at 10:30. The place was rocking so we enjoyed a few more beers with the partying crowd. A great night of fun. We will certainly be back!
Probably my 3rd or 4th time at blackthorn. May have been my last. 4 of us at the bar early Saturday. Female bartender super nice, very attentive. Appetizer was nachos, one of the best plates I've had around here, hands down. Entrees; Â 2 salads, 1 burger, 1 wrap. Both salads drenched in dressing, better off asking for it on the side. Wrap was alright, no complaints. My burger, ordered medium, came rare. Couldn't eat 75% of it. Probably would have been good otherwise. They offered to replace but not take off the bill. Staff unfortunately very immature. Had the misfortune of overhearing a waiter describe his bowel movements while walking to the bathroom. Speaking of the bathroom, there was noticeable blood on the floor in the men's room stall according to the gentleman that had earlier been speaking of his bathroom activities. Seems like something that would have been cleaned up before opening but I guess not.
I'm very interested in trying their version of French onion soup, although I'm not sure I can stomach going back.
The only 2 options in my opinion are the Harp-battered Fish & Chips or the Shepherd's Pie.
I had the Fish & Chips and it was on point - while the fries are quite good, they aren't "chips", so -1 star for that...
Add some of the HP sauce (British version of A-1) to your tartar sauce - excellent...!
I will be back for the Shepherd's Pie next time.
Suburban New Jersey, home of the strip mall and chain Restaurant heaven.
Then you find Blackthorn.
Yes, I am from Boston. Yes, we have about a million of these sorts of places per square mile. Yes, Blackthorn is not doing anything different. But in Parsippany they ARE different and they are doing it well!
The service here is on point and the food is tasty. I am in this area once a year and I have a new place to add to the list of places I will visit each time.
For grabbing a beer and watching a professional soccer game in Parsippany, Â this is your best option. I haven't been there for other things but I'm not interested in them. I would probably go nuts if the place was packed and so noisy that I couldn't hear myself.
Good beer selection with standard American pub faire. Irish themed bar Guiness on tap.
As good as an Irish pub in NJ can be. Â Better than a chain, solid pub food, they even get creative with a few food specials. Â Very good rotating beer selection and they know how to pour a Guiness. Â Â Jim The bartender will treat you right, especially if you Cheer for (or pretend to support) QPR.
Review Source:You won't find your traditional chain restaurant menu at the Blackthorn. Instead you have options with Irish flair, which makes dining here fun.
The restaurant is big and clean (as are the restrooms), and the service is OK. Â Seating in the dining area isn't huge, so waiting times for a table can become quite long for dinner.
The bar becomes a hotspot on Thursday and Friday nights, often supplemented by a live band. Â With no cover charge, it is a fun and inexpensive place to meet up with friends for a casual drink.
This restaurant is close to where I work, so I've been here a few times for food, drinks, and sometimes food and drinks.
First of all... A Murder Burger. Yes, they have a burger called the Murder Burger. It's just you're regular giant burger, that's then battered and deep fried. That does not sound appetizing to me at all, but my coworker tried it. He said.. and I quote... "That didn't sit well in my stomach". I'm sure that there was a lot more to it, he was just being polite!
Other than the murder burger, they have your general all-American dishes, but with an Irish flare. They have an extensive menu, so you don't feel like you're stuck choosing the same thing every time.
They have a good selection of beer on tap and a full bar.
The service isn't spectacular, but it's fine.
I'd recommend that you give it a chance. It's definitely one of the more interesting places that I've been to in Parsippany.
We had a work event here, so I am only familiar with their service for a reserved room with pre-ordered dishes and appetizers.
Our servers were all very friendly and helpful, and the food seemed to come quickly (again, it had been pre-ordered over the phone). The glance at the menu I had though seemed really pricey.
It was a nice place with nice food and a nice wait staff, but there wasn't really anything that made it stand-out or make me say "Wow! I have to come back here!"
I wouldn't not recommend it.
