Boca Mocha has since rebranded itself as "Boca Tacos and Tequila." I can't speak to the tequila part of this (I only saw a couple of bottles and nothing advertised anywhere about any tequila drinks, but they're still kind of transitioning it seems), but our food was pretty great and the service was better than before. I had the battered avocado taco and the smoked chicken taco which were both delicious. The avocado was fried in a tempura batter and there was a really good, fresh salsa on top which was a nice balance for something fried. The smoked chicken was diced up pretty finely and had good flavor. I would rather it be shredded but that's just a personal preference. On the side I had the grilled corn with jalapeno honey butter. My corn came out kind of room temp/cool so it wasn't very good for melting the butter but it tasted really good so I hardly cared. That butter is awesome. I want to try all of the other tacos so we will definitely be back!
Review Source:The service was exhausting. Â Wait, wait, wait. Â They take your orders on iPads, which sounds cool. Â In reality, they don't know how to work them and it slows things down and makes mistakes. Â
As for the coffee, I got the Boca Mocha, which I found to be so thick and chocolatey I had to pour half my glass of water in it just to drink it. Â Way too thick! Â
For lunch I got the bruschetta which was basically four slices of French bread with a slice of mozzarella and basil on each one. Â It was awkward to eat and not very good.
On the plus side, the decor is cool and they have swanky green high chairs. Â It's not worth the wait, though, especially if you have a kid!
My boyfriend and I went here back in July of 2011 right after they opened. We went there for dinner because we were going to a Mother's beer tasting event later on that evening at the same location.
We were kind of on a budget so we decided to order this steak dish with Yukon potatoes and split it. I guess we were thinking we were at a steakhouse where you actually get the right amount of food for the money you spend. Â They brought out of order on 2 separate plates which was nice because I was going to ask for a second plate anyway. They portions were incredibly small and the steak was not cooked the way my boyfriend HAS TO have it. So he wasn't very happy with that and the potatoes were not impressive. Â The waitress was nice though which is always good.
Honestly, it was okay.
I'm not sure what everyone's problem is with this place. I went there for lunch two days ago and everything was really good, the service, food, and the iPads worked wonderfully. My server was Alexandria, she had long brown hair if that helps at all. She was excellent, fast, and friendly. We had small talk over the menu and complimented the actual decor of the restaurant which I thought was thoughtful and interesting since I'm an artist myself and appreciate those things. After that she made recommendations on the menu and was very knowledgable about everything we had questions on. Also, I have to give kudos to bringing the water out in a corked bottle. Very nice touch, it was a new way of doing something ordinary and making it fresh. When we waited on the food my mother and I drink quite a bit and she made sure to keep my mothers ice tea filled, which she is a huge stickler on. We ended up deciding on the red pepper quesadilla, and half the turkey wrap and half the horsey sandwich. I loved the fresh mango salsa, sour cream and fresh made guacamole. Kudos to the chef on our whole meal. Also when ordering the horsey I made sure to ask how done the beef steak would be since I prefer only a little pink in the center, Alexandria had no problem making a note of that and letting me know she has never seen it come out bloody. Once we got all our food I was very impressed. Everything was delicious. The steak was tender and juicy and the onions and bleu cheese were amazing. I also enjoyed the curry spices in my mothers turkey wrap. All in all I enjoyed my experience there and I'll definitely be back.
As for the coffee debate, I didn't have it. But seriously, mudhouse and coffee ethic have had such a lock down on that market I think it's good that Boca Mocha stick to their food and work on their coffee if it is "not as good". But if they commit themselves and keep the menu simple like they have and concentrate on making a few simple things fantastic and bring that to their coffee then I don't see how they can go wrong. All I can say is keep it up!
Real quick, I'm going to put my small two cents here because the one star rating is harsh for what goes on here, at least on the food end. I've been three times, all for food. I don't drink coffee, well, because that's none of your damned business. But I do eat food. Quite often in fact. And they make nice meals here. I've had the horsey sandwich and the red pepper quesadilla a couple of times because it was tasty with it's fresh made chipotle guac, homemade sour cream, and mango salsa. Its awesome. And yes, $8 awesome. But they also had Yelp-Check In coupon for 10% off.
They've got beer too! All the up and coming Mother's offerings are there, so its nice they are continuing the local-love-affair surge. Keep it going. The decor is cool-its bright and there are little Dr. Seuss flowers on the table. There is "indie" music. You order on Ipad's like some real-life big cities do-although the tip feature didn't work the last two times...whoops... The girls wear those pants that come up really high which decades since have proven unattractive, but its ok because they are super nice and really helpful. This is a COFFEE SHOP though, right? I thought everyone agreed that's what coffee shops do-celebrate pretension. That and advertise Apple. The whole gourmet coffee scene alone is one giant, super specific industry with its own set of rules and expectations. Â I'm not sure if we can call this pretension any more because its so wide-spread, but it is clearly a defined style. I bet they ride their bikes when they aren't in their VW's too, those bastards! But I dunno, I can only attest to the scene as I haven't had the coffee, or care to and couldn't tell you if the pretension is actually worth it. Either way as a tattooed-mac user (yes we are all alike!) I am the hand that slides into this glove comfortably once every two weeks or so.
I saw they added a book case in the front that had nice literature. Although, i'm not sure how useful it can become. I wonder if they have ever been picked up. I can see trying to read Updike's Rabbit, Run in short 20 minute bursts once every two weeks....But hey, its nice that they still show analog books to people before they forget what they are.
So as of these reviews, come in, get lunch or a nice afternoon snack, grab a beer, not a coffee and you'll be out before you have time to roll up your jeans or grow out your beard.
I am sick and tired of people opening up cafes even though they don't know a damn thing about coffee.
My brewed coffee came from a bunn coffee pot? It's like the bad coffee your coworker brews at the office, that sits on the burner all day.
While I waited for it, I watched the barista walk away from an espresso shot as it pulled. No timing the shot. No care for how it pulled.
Breakfast was fine... bacon, egg, and cheese english muffin, except I'm pretty sure my cheese was a kraft single. I did get a generous serving of fresh fruit with my order, which was the best part of my meal. I got everything to go and pulled over down the street, where I trashed the coffee and got a cup at The Coffee Ethic. Much better choice.
