I came to the Thimpson Center on my way home. I can believe I actually stopped because I wanted to go to Panda express which is part of the food court. Any. When I walked past this place which I understood as a pastriy/breakfast place I notice a customer getting what looked like a big turkey sandwhich with cranberries on it. I asked for a sample of the werid looking turkey and it was THE BEST!!!!!!!
I ordered the large container for $5 to go. I ordered just the trukey because it was lat afternoon and the side looked dry and unappetizing. Also on my way out I asked for a sample of the fajita meat and it was so dry and gross. Really unedible. That is a classic case of a small place trying to do too much. I think they should stick to Turkey homemade cranberry sauce veggies and mashed potaoes that ARE FRESHEND! BEFORE they dry out. I went home and made some veggies, rice and gravy. SO GOOD! Usually with the other flaws I would give it a 3 or 2 but that turkey was so darn juicy and good I have to give the entire place 4 stars. I will return for the turkey sandwhich :)
FYI The one guy there was super nice!
Solid option in the Loop for quick breakfast to go. I decided on a breakfast sandwich on sesame bagel - they sautéed the Canadian bacon right there in front of me at the counter before integrating the eggs. Bagel was an actual bagel! Not great, but quality for a place under a government building outside of the NYC metro area. Other pastries...seemed lacking. I didn't try them, but you can fairly often judge croissant by their cover.
Got in and out with my sandwich in about five minutes. For speed and cost (~$3-4), tough to beat this freshness.
*** This establishment has the official  SEAL OF FAT GIRL APPROVAL***
I had a breakfast that consisted of a generous amount of potatoes, a generously sized sausage (that's what she said!), and an omelette fixed to my liking. They make it in front of you and its fast! Faster than McDonalds, and faster than Dunkin Donuts. Its real food. And for kicks I got a humongous rice crispy treat.
The total: $5.86
Hear that?
Thats one easy payment of $5.86!
You're welcome. And enjoy!
I work in this building but I still come back here all the time because it's a swell joint with cheap downtown eats whose taste quality far-outweighs the minimal price tag. Â Some highlights:
Two words: Pizza. Bagel.
That's what they call it anyway, but if there's one bagel you absolutely MUST try in this world when you're downtown (during a break from the DMV on the lower level of the Thompson Center, perchance?), then this is it!
The workers have pretty solid poker faces until you greet them, then they light right up. Â Perhaps they serve too many state employee sourpusses, heh.
Other superb-value highlights:
+ Garden Salad
I suggest getting it with the fruit and nut options (no extra charge) and the creamy Caesar dressing - mmm! Â And this from a meatatarian!
+ Soup Special
They have a great vegetable soup that comes with a side of pita chips that are a perfectly-portioned lunch special. Again, I suggest adding rice and turkey if you so choose (slight up-charge for the meat) and it all shakes out to a swell lunch for 4 bucks and change!
One star subtracted for bad customer flow-through design, somewhat cramped quarters and a lack of sit-down eating space, but hey - there's an entire cafeteria downstairs so you can people-watch the hilarity that parades through government buildings whilst you enjoy your noms.
Cheers!
Came across this cafe while staying in Hyde park and found myself drifting back to it for several reasons.
1.Very friendly employees. If I go to place just a couple of times and am ready to make conversation and get the same attitude in response something refreshing is happening.
2. Wireless. I think I was snagging it from somewhere nearby, but I really liked Bonjour as a place to people watch and drink coffee, while enjoying a wonderful homemade pastry. (By homemade I mean the make them in the shop).
3. It's French. Â Employees speaking French amongst themselves was enjoyable.French pastries. All tasty as far as I can tell and enjoyable to see the fancy cakes even though I'm not ready to shell out 30 bucks for one. Bonjour knows their crowd though. There were low priced treats mingled with the high so a broad array of people passed through.
4.Distinctively dressed owner who was there every time I came. The shop reflected her fashion taste. I really like to come to a shop and see the owner there being in touch with what's going on. It makes it feel more like entering into someones life and not just a business. Thanks Bonjour!
Bonjour Cafe is the best thing that ever happened to the Thompson Center, not including the bums of course. Â This place rocks my world. Â Amazing spot to pick up some lunch and bring it back to your work. Â Do you like lots of turkey? Do you like vegetables? Do you like cheap? Â If the answer to any of those questions is maybe you will love Bonjour Cafe. Â Granted terrible location because very hard to spot, but that is what makes this an unpolished gem.
Review Source:I was thouroughly impressed with this place as I have never realized it was here even though I get on the trains at Clark and Lake all of the time. Â If you enter the State of Illinois building from the lake street entrance and go past the CTA entrance this place is just on your right! i am happy I found it.
I was starving this morning and I was looking for something quick that wasn't any chain type fast food. I wouldn't call this place fast food but they did sure get me my breakfast sandwich and latte fast! Everyone there were really friendly and my bagel sandwich was pretty darn good too. Extra kudos for them making my sandwich extra tidy so it was easier for me to eat on the train. Â I will se you all soon.
