We used to go there before they (remodeled) the food was good, although they needed to change their more often. We have been back there once just after they reopened. One of the reasons we stopped going, they charged for every drink refill. My husband drinks iced tea like a fish. We paid enough to make four quarts of our own. They lost the chef, and do not know who was cooking. Was sorry to not be able to go there, Yes it looks like a dive. They take care of their drinkers. Also, this used to be a bikers bar about 20 years ago. I do not know where the guy who live down the road is from but this place has been open a very long time. Our son is now 38 and he worked there in his 20's.
Review Source:I live right down the road from this place, and I've probably visited around 15-20 times since it's been open (only a few years). Â
It's simply a nice sports bar. Â Their food is better than most pub grub I've eaten; and there are plenty of TV's to be able to watch the game that you're looking for. Â They have your typical "darts and Golden Tee" corner, and their beer selection is better than your average sports bar as well. Â The staff has been very attentive for the most part; and the owners are always friendly and open for suggestions.
I like this more, a few years later from my original review. I started eating meat again, and they have a pretty good patty melt, which is a solid. Most importantly of all, they have a good selection of beers on tap, including Ranger IPA (New Belgium), Blue Moon, and Guinness. Lately I've only been going on Thursdays, because their best bartender works that day in the evening, and she's outstanding. She actually knows how to pour a Guinness, which makes a huge difference.
It doesn't hurt that the crowd isn't bad. It's not one of those bars where you go for a drink at 8 PM and people are already shitfaced and acting like morons. I can't speak to the late night boozin' crowd, because I generally avoid those people at everything but my absolute favorite bars, but the early evening crowd is perfectly acceptable for a quiet drink. Music seems to be frequent, but if you don't mind talking over a band playing shitty covers, it's a good place to have a brew in the south suburbs of Chicago.
Costs (regular): Guinness - $5, Ranger $4.50. Coors Light is $1.50 on Thursdays, if you're desperate to save cash. I only list costs of shit I order, so if you want to know how much Bud Light costs... look elsewhere.
This bar has its pros and cons. I love the fact that it is open later than most bars around the lansing area. The bar itself is nice. It is decently clean (for a bar) The prices are great too, they have $1 bombs and cheap drafts. They have random activities to do too. Such as Jenga, basketball, a great jukebox I do enjoy going to local taverns like this, but the crowd is what bothers me. This dive bar is full of douchey juiced up bros, and drunk gross girls who think they are hot, yet half of them are only dancing with each other and arent gettign any attention from any guy sno matter how drunk he may be . How This particular bar attracts this crowd, i dont understand. I usually haveto have a good buzz going before I goto this bar.
Review Source:Dive bar with great Deep Fried Walleye! Food is surprisingly good! Great fries. With your dinner you get soup and salad and its a LOT of food. Walleye is sooo good and buttery, it should be illegal. Lake perch is outstanding as well.
Place is a little creepy, but outside patio is great.
Soup needs to be worked on, very salty and tasteless.
I would definitely be back for some good fried fish!
Oh and service was super!
Well I really liked this place for the entire hour I was there..the people I was out  with were apparently into heading out to young idiot night at Margaritas a few miles away, if it were up to me I would have stayed...good calm crowd MY OWN AGE or older and decent music..the guy singin was a bit slow for my taste but better that "bump that thang" playing so loud you can't hear your own thoughts. Good beer, prices and a heated smoking area...thank you!  I'll be back for sure :) it's hard to find places like this anymore
Review Source:Place started going downhill around 2002. To fall within the current demographic. (providing you are at this establishment between the hours of midnight and 4am on either friday or saturday night)
You must
1. Wear scarface T-shirt
2. Have oversized pants
I suggest bringing at least 7 - 10 people with you when going to this bar.
Ill give it 2 stars beacuse Ive gotten secks there more times than I can count.
I'd say this is more a sports bar & restaurant than a dive bar for two reasons:
1) They have lots of TVs and tons of games to play out back.
2) The food is great! Â
That's right - great food. Â My grandma comes here for lunch, so that should tell you everything you need to know. Â They have some great fish selections, but I've always stuck to the basics and gone chicken sandwich w/ fries, which never disappoints. Â
We've been coming here for a couple years now, and each time it seems to get a little nicer. Â They're currently doing a remodel and I imagine will be more of a restaurant than a bar after it's done.
Well at least with the Illinois smoking ban you no longer have to worry about smelling like smoke UNLESS you get a seat outside. Everyone smokes out there now pretty close to where the dining tables are. Dive bar fits it to a T. It was a dive way back when it was McKinney's Place, well actually it was A LOT worse then. Now at least you have a 90% Â better chance of coming out with your face intact. The food is good, I'll give them that. They have a decent bocce ball court and horseshoe pits out back too.
Review Source:As a regular place, Bottoms Up would probably get 2.5/5, but it gets 4 stars as a dive bar. Â It fits the description "dive bar" to a T. Â However, the food is well above par for this category. Â I love the fried shrimp and fish, and practically everything comes with a salad AND a soup - excellent value. Â In typical dive bar fashion, it is very smokey. Â You will come out smelling like bar, unless you're lucky enough to get a seat on the patio.
Edit: My GF's parents love coming here for the food, and they are by far NOT dive bar people. Â That should give you an indication of how good the food really is.
