Aww man this place was awesome! After a beautiful day right by the beach, this place was great to get drink that night, right on the water, cool Pier that's got a ton of history as far as LA beach cities. Â Feels like your going downstairs to some secret venue slash bar that was around during the prohibition. It has a long bar and mafia style booths along the opposite wall, everything points toward the stage. Its cool. Â Not very pricey I was getting $5 Stella's which isn't bad.
Definitely a cool, pretty laid back, night time spot in the Redondo beach area.
Literally the best place in the South Bay to see a Concert. I saw an AeroSmith covver band here and The Aggrolytes. Th place is right on the pier. Its so majestic. A really nice Oceanfront. I'll never forget the time the lead singer to Peelander-Z said "Redondo Beach we a love your beautiful ocean.
Review Source:Its low end of okay, they have a very odd business model, i.e. if you want a table, you have to drink $120 bucks worth of the sauce, which is not hard in a group but can be annoying...I dont like rules with my live music/bar venue, and this place seems to have them...They have an odd mix of has been bands coming thru, peppered in with some crazy tribute/cover bands, which can be fun... At its core its a small, loud, fun, place to see some live music, with 7 dollar well drinks ( LAME), I lament, I have been 3 times, and every time I have managed to enjoy myself, love the music, but still not have what I would call a memorable evening...Go for the bands, drink pints of beer and Najas down the way.
Review Source:I came for a Heart & Pole recital, and while the performance was great, it's really not a good venue for it. A lot of the "premium" seating (the booths) had such awful views of the stage/performance that we missed a good portion of what was going on in the show. Very disappointing.
Also, worst drinks I have ever had in a bar! Incredibly watered down. To add insult to injury, I ordered an Old Fashioned and they brought me a Manhattan up (which I also like) but it was so watery I could barely taste the bourbon. Do not recommend! If you have to go here to see a show, do yourself a favor and just order bottled beer. At least they can't mess that up!
Meatheads everywhere. But I know what I'm getting into when I go to Strung Out shows. I'm just never quite sure what to expect when I see them at a new venue.
See, I'm still not used to security being in the pit. At a show at the Hard Rock in Vegas, I was surprised to see security stopping people from moving at a Thrice concert. At this show, security was actively engaging the pit, pushing people back and helping people up when they fell. I only saw one guy get tossed, and that was for acting way overly aggressive in the pit and physically picking up and throwing people. It was actually kind of rad to watch until he threw a guy into my sternum and I got the wind knocked out of me. Ow.
For the venue itself, Brixton has a million obstructions and the stage is like 4 feet off the ground, so I had to edge my way up front in order to see the band. The sound was okay, but because it's such a small venue and I was up close, I didn't need to rely on the acoustics. I can imagine it being not so great near the back, though.
The bathroom was broken when I went, so we all had to use the mens room which led to fun conversation.
This is a great place to see a show. Pretty reasonable pricing and great location. My biggest problem with this place is that they have no toilet seat covers in the bathrooms (at least the womans). I have complained a coupe of times and still nothing. I have been to some of the diviest bars and even they have toilet seat covers. SO im not sure whats up with that.
Review Source:Absolutely love this venue, and Loved, Loved the recent performance of Whitney Steele, she GETS the 5 stars, really wished she could've performed ALL night.  Whitney was opening for  Lisa Loeb.  Sadly Lisa Loeb was not my cup of tea, singing mostly childrens nursery rhymes, and something about a round flat pancake.  With that, it was time to go, didn't even bother to stay for the next act!
Again love Brixton, and Whitney! Â Hopefully, Whitney will be booking another show soon, we just love her music!
Love coming to this local venue and being up front an personal with the performers.
I have to say last night was one of the most disappointing shows I have ever seen here, it's sad when the starting act is better than one of  the headliners.  Although I didn't know any of Whitney Steele's songs, she has a nice voice. The headliner was Lisa Loeb, an old time favorite, quickly becoming a snoozer and mommy show for those in summer camp or with small children.  Sadly we left after the "disappointed pancake" song, really? I get performers pushing their new songs and albums, but children's books and camp song Cd's at a night club venue? This is a 21 and over venue and it was 9 PM. not a book signing at your local book store.  Thankfully she sang "stay" early on between talks of summer camp, her CD and children's book, o and let's not forget grandma's snot song.....
Would have loved to see Jill Sobule, "kissed a girl" but couldn't sit through any more camp song gibberish! :-( Wish she had gone on before LL :-(
Lisa Loeb: 1 star, because she had a great voice, needs to choose her song's more wisely based on the venue.
Whitney Steele: 4 stars.
Our server, (wish I could remember her name) adorable, tiny gal  with an accent. She was great: 5 stars!
mac & cheese, no stars, cold, salty garlic and mushy $3.00 (yuck)
Drinks, nice and stiff: 4 stars
bring in your Tony's on the Pier dinner receipt and receive a free drink : 5 stars
Beer bucket $30 for 6, good deal: 5 stars
Ticket price $15.00 which was a 5 star before the performance, 0 after, my bf said I couldn't pay him to see LL again...
Although you need a min to sit at the tables, it obviously wasn't sold out (now I know why) we asked if we could take one of the booths, the answer was yes :-)
All in all a good night with friends.
Decent venue to see a band. Â Not too big so its a more intimate experience. Â Not every seat is a good one. Â There are these pillars surrounding the lower ground area & they can really obstruct the view to the stage. Â And they always have these "Reserved" tables everywhere & I mean EVERYWHERE. Â On a recent visit, there was not one table in the house that was not already "Reserved." Â There are a few areas where one can grab a seat but once they're gone, its standing room only. Â I just feel like I can't get comfortable at this place. Â But I've seen some decent bands here & its local so I don't feel like I have to get all Hollywooded-out to make an appearance there. Â The 1st place I have ever gone where the cocktail waitress took the initiative to tip herself - & she thought she deserved 30%! Â Wow...there's one reason to go elsewhere to have a drink before you get there.
Review Source:Came here last Friday night for the Smut Peddlers show, it was my first time in the venue.
Head down some stairs and you got yourself a dark bar. Has a rock and roll, 80's punk vibe to it. And they obviously have good bands play... I'd like to give the bar more stars, but the bartenders need to work on their customer service skills. They don't acknowledge you when you're patiently standing there, waiting... and waiting... and waiting for a drink, they randomly will ask someone if they want a drink... and then when they finally get around to you, the pouring is inconsistent and they have less than a pleasant attitude. Prices are standard, and so is their selection of alcohol.
I don't believe there is a bad spot in the place to check out the live music... there is a section opposite of the bar with booths and seating... a nice size "dance floor", and pretty good sound.
The bathrooms are in a horrible spot though, allllllll the way in the back of the bar.
Which you have to stand in line between the "pit" and some tables.
The bouncers seemed to be a little over zealous, but with the Smut Peddlers crowd, I suppose you'd need to be.
There are some pros and cons, with a little work, this bar could be pretty awesome.
Don't quite understand how a venue can host bands like Guttermouth and Strung Out and not allow for people to dance? Not only that, but their bouncers are pricks. I saw some kid dancing around at a Mad Caddies show there, not moshing or anything, just dancing to the music and they grabbed him, and violently shoved him around and then threw him out.
Screw this place.
I didn't come here for a show, just Sunday noon football. So I can't comment on that.
So came in with a date, we just did an hour and a half on the Harley ( My first bike ride mind you and I LOVE it!)  So came in and I guess around this time the place does seem spacious BUT im sure when they have shows it can get packed.  The waitstaff enjoy socializing with the regulars but still paid attention to us.  This place is pretty dated and can use a face lift. Â
I didn't try the food. My martini's were made great. My only gripe I have is, how the hell do you run out of PATRON!!!!!!???? I mean come on, your a place on the pier , a great locale , how do you not have patron on deck! Shit go to the millions of liqour stores or Bevmo to get some for the day at least. Â
I'd come back if I get a second date hehe.
I actually came here a few times to watch Sassy Minxx and Heart & Pole events. Â The timing is always off not sure if it's the place or the people getting ready for the show. Â The last time we came here (we were on time) but had to wait outside 30 mins and then 2 more hours once we got in. Â
We reserved a booth (close to the bathroom) which I don't recommend, you can't see the performance on the main floor and there was a cold breeze from the air vent throughout the entire show. Â We actually left early because it was unbearable even though we asked the waitress if they can do something about it. Â
Our waitress was very nice and the service at the bar was very good. Â
But what's up with that old white dude tearing up the dance floor?!?! Â He's always there each time we're there....boy can he dance!!!!
Came here for a show on a Saturday night and had reserved a booth for 5. It certainly fit 5 people comfortably and there was no one blocking our view. We got one way up front so it was directly to the side of the stage. The waitress said booths #4 & #5 are the most popular and have the best view, so you should request this. If you have a booth toward the back, you may have a pillar blocking your view.
With a booth comes a $100 food minimum and $20 gratuity, so $120 was charged to my credit card before we ever set foot in the place. The options are minimal as it consists of a tri tip sandwich with chips or macaroni and cheese. You are allowed to bring in food from the outside however. The drinks were decently priced and we hit our minimum almost exactly. All in all a great experience at a great venue.
I like swing. I like grunge. I like Indie Alternative hipster bands from time to time. I like pole dancing. Depending on the night, Brixton's has some or all of these.
I heart this place for two reasons:
- If you're smart, arrive early; there is a plethora of comfortable seating. I'm not in shit shape or anything, but I paid my 'standing for 4 hours watching a show ' concert dues in my teens. I want to get likkr'd up, sit down and enjoy the tunes. If you come late, it gets crowded; thems the breaks.
- The staff/crowd are always friendly and don't make me feel out of place. Real talk; when I go to shows, I'm typically one of the few brown/brownish people in the building. It's nice to talk about Marcy's Playground in line and no one makes you feel awkward.
- Bonus Reason: I don't know who the bartenders are in the Dive part of Brixton's but when they pour you a drink, you better call a cab! I've never had bartenders so generous with yonder booze and genuinely talk to you like you're not a living dollar sign with legs.
I came back from an Elviss show the night before. This music was fantastic, people got free cake and Elvis shades and the crowd had an awesome vibe. I've absorbed the sexy that is the Sassy Minxx. Brixton's does burlesque just as dandy as it damn well pleases, thankyouverymuch.
Tips: Get your tickets online. It's easier to walk in and be set. Also, don't expect to get any cellphone signal while you're in the bowels of the club. No carrier works and I sorta like it that way.
There are not too many places in the South Bay where you can hear decent live music of full bands. St. Rocke, The Lighthouse Cafe, and Brixton.
Brixton gets more of the larger bands, semi-national acts, and the large tribute bands. The inside in downstairs and there is limited cell service. It is dark, very little tables and chairs unless you are at a reserved table. Depending on the band, it can get VERY crowded. The last two times I've been here it has been $15 cover.
The bar is against one wall and it can be trying to get a drink. Not all of the bartenders are all of that friendly. Prices are average for the South Bay. Sometimes there is a draft beer only table where it is cash only for domestic draft ($5). In some ways Brixton reminds me of a frat house back in my college days.
The people who work here are on two different ends of the spectrum. The door guys and guys at the register are super friendly and nice. The bartenders (especially the females), the cocktail waitresses and inside security are little bitches. It's crowded (like elbow to elbow standing room) and they constantly push people aside as they are moving through since the have to 'rush'. Push as in shove, like you're thrown off balanced. That combined with too much eye makeup and fake cleavage, well, we know where it comes from.
The crowd is different with the band, but it is a good mix of 20s to 50s.
Bands stop at 12:00 midnight due to noise and liquor laws on the Redondo Pier.
Came here with my 2 girl cousins 2 watch Tyler Hilton perform. . .
the bouncer was this really cool samoan guy. . .
this place was very roomy. . .loved the fact we got a table rt in d middle 2 watch the performers. . .drinks r wayyyy stiff. . .and kind of pricey.
We had the rasberry lemon drop martini, sooo good!
the crowd was much older than i expected. . . we were the only asian ppl inside. . .but everyone was pretty chill. The manager even came up to introduce herself, which i thought was impressive.
We came here to see our beloved J.R. Richards perform!! I love the small intimate venue! Located right there in the front of the Redondo Pier. We were allowed to stand in front and party with the performers.
Center stage and the cool thing is when band changes, they let down the projector so it looks like a curtain.
There's only a few free seatings available. The other seatings require minimums. So that minus my one star from the five.
No other food is provided by the venue except for "Pinkies" that was there that charged $8 for a small pulled pork burger and chips. Â
And since it's  an underground venue, their is no signal for cell phones at all. ( mine was Verizon)
Other then that, the venue and crowds are always great and humble. Securities are nice.
By all means, We had a BLAST with J.R. Richards and he shall be invited down here more often!!!
I saw Toad the Wet Sprocket here in April, and the venue was very intimate. Looking back, it was great to see my band in such a small club.
You'll know the minute you walk through the front door this place is part-dive, part underground punk-club. Â Literally, once you purchase tickets, you'll have to walk down a flight of stairs into what my wife called "The Crypt."
Objectively speaking, I only found 3 negatives with the club:
1. Â The stage was set low, so tall people obstructed the view of the entire stage. Â Not a big deal for me, but a big deal for my wife.
2. Â In order to sit at a table, the club charges you a $200-300 premium the night of shows. Â Which gets you 4 chairs a little closer to the stage. Â FYI - People leave their empty drinks on your table.
3. Â This place is a maze. Â When leaving, you'll feel like you're being corralled like cattle down a very shady hallway and up a staircase to the sidewalk again. Â
Overall, a pretty cool place to go see a show. Â Sticky floors, big crowds, and maybe not the best view of the stage, but you won't find a better place to see your favorite band up close and personal - really personal.
Came here Friday night to see my friend's band, Fiction Reform. This was a really nice venue:
Likes:
Nice & big, not cramped at all.
Comfy booths.
Decently priced, strong drinks.
Location - right next to the beach, really pretty at night.
Dislikes:
The huge staircase you have to walk up & down to get in and out. Not an easy feat when drunk.
The women's bathroom was hard to find and I accidentally went in the men's and peed with them instead.
The Brixton did not have to do much to get 5 stars from me. They had a automatic "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" in my book as soon as I saw that MY ALL TIME FAVORITE singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb would be singing some songs there.
Plus I was able to get tixs via Gold Star for 5 dolla holla!!
As my friends husband said to us earlier in the night,
"I hope Lisa folk rocks your socks off"!
SHE DID! She is sooooo awesome and YES she has other songs other than Stay. I shouted Hurricane enough times (which is a song she never sings live) and she sang it, rocked it, and it was awesome! Sounded just like when I hear it playing on my iPod.
On to the Brixton itself.....Even though it was dark and jammed packed with people when we arrived, I was surprised by what a large venue it actually was. Long stocked bar on one wall, flanked by big leather booths and tall bar tables on the other wall. Pinkies BBQ was also there serving up some eats. Standing room only in the center (but some moved their bar stools over) in front of a pretty tiny stage. Sound was great, bathrooms were clean, stocked and tidy and even though the place was packed, it was not a sweaty muggy mess. Hooray for AC or the ocean breeze.
Brother Bone and Ima working the door were cool as can be as I slid them each a "You've Been Yelped" card.
Brixton- YOU ROCK MY SOCKS as my ****400th review**** as seeing LL was a bittersweet moment in my life that needed to happen. A HUGE Thank you to my dear friend Arwen for being there and agreeing to go with me from the moment I asked her to. And to Erin V. and Andrea V. for being down and excited to see LL last minute. Erin- you are the best second choice $5 can buy. xoxo
"Good bye my love I'm going away
I know you won't follow me far
Once I went out just to look at the stars
I asked you to join me but you were to tired"
I came to Brixtons to watch my fav reggae band Katchafire along with Seedless and Tribal Theory (They all turned out to be sickkk).
The venue is pretty small, you can get right up to the stage with the band. There is limited seating around the few pillars if you're lucky or get their early enough. Or, if you're a girl i'm sure you could talk your way into a seat. They also had some booths to the side that appeared to require a monetary reservation. Their sound system was really solid. At the full bar they had $5 Coronas and $8 mixed drinks which I suppose aren't too bad prices in today's economy. Also if you are a guy, the two female bartenders were insanely hot. Whoa! haha.
The only con here was I got stuck next to a bro (Everytime, I swear). He and his "lady" clearly had no interest in reggae music and I'm not even sure why they were there considering they looked like high school sophmores. I don't know if bros lack boundary issues but he kept doing his knee-bending springing from side to side action constantly bumping into me which started to piss me off. He was staring at his "lady" the whole time desperately looking for attention whilst both ignored Katchafire entirely. Sigh, bros and their brohos, bro.
All in all, thank you Brixton for hosting Katchafire, Seedless and Tribal Theory. Some great vibes here. Also, bartenders. Whoa!!
If you like pork pie hats, fedoras, and songs about licking someones ass (no, seriously), then this is the venue for you!
Came here with Joseph D. since we got free entrance for going to the earlier Elite event. Â I have to say that it's a great venue for a live performance. Â Wide open space with plenty of seating (as long as you get there early enough), full bar, and a good sound system. Â There were quite a few bands playing last night but my favorite had to be The Beat Foundation. Â They have great stage presence, a good sound, and the stones to sing a song about lickin' ass...
WOOO! so i went to brixton for a reggae show to watch katchafire, rebel souljahz. Â it was my first time and i had a fun experience! its on the redondo beach pier. really nice view of the ocean and there's fun lil shops to go to all around. the place itself is very chill. no need for that whole "clubbing" attire. Â the night i watched i came in comfortable clothes (shirt and shorts) pretty chill. Â drinks were pretty average. $7 for mixed drinks... not that bad but they bartenders seems kinda... bleh. haha but i had fun.
Review Source:I was going to give Brixton's 2 stars, but overall I would say the show was pretty good, so fine 2.5 stars. I came last Saturday to see Guttermouth and I was looking really forward to finally checking this place out since I had never been here. I had been hearing good things about this place and a lot of good punk bands play here, so I was pretty disappointed when I got here the security working here were the biggest a-holes I've ever come across.
I had purchased my tickets online and they could not find my name on the will call list, and said I had never purchased tickets. They called another guy who looked at another list and turns out the genius just didn't see my name on the list right in front of his face. Then while we were waiting in line to be searched very thoroughly by the a-hole bouncers they threw my friend out of the show before we even got inside, because she was drinking a beer that she had bought from a stand right next to them. She was just finishing her beer while we were in a long line, why couldn't they just make her throw it away and let her in the show! They threw her beer away and kicked her out, wtf!!!????
Then they tell me that my bandanna is gang affiliated and that I'm not going to be allowed into the show with it on. Really?! I look gang affiliated at a punk show?! I've been going to punk shows since I was 11 years old, and this is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. The a-holes then yelled at me to get out of line and stop wasting their time, because I wasn't going in with my "gang affiliated" bandanna. Yea at a punk show, this type of bs isn't necessary.
Well, after putting my bandanna in my pocket, I went into the show and the place is pretty small and there's huge pillars in the middle of the place. I went and stood against the rail in the front, if I had stood anywhere else I might of have died and not seen anything, lol. The place seems like it has great potential for insane awesome punk shows, but with that kind of security working, I really don't know if I would want to come back here.
The Adicts are playing here in June, and I thought I would like to come back and hang out on the pier, eat, get some drinks, and then go to the show, but yea I don't know now. Also, considering how small the place is and everything I might die seeing the Adicts here, so yea gonna think about that one. So yea F*@k you Brixton's, tell your security to chill the f*@k out, it's a punk show, not prison.
Sex, drugs, and rock in roll.
subtract the sex, replace the drugs with liquor and that sums up our night.
Music: Multiple bands all playing to get some award. Battle of the bands I believe it was called. I put my money on Intensity. Why a group of 40-50yr old men would call their rock group that, is beyond me. My friend plays the bass in the band and they put a microphone in front of him. They were on stage rocking out with their cocks out. Not really, but they got my friends and I out of out whiskey absorbed seats. They had the most energy I had seen throughout the night.
The club is filled with older people still wearing their same faded black tee-shirts of washed up rock groups. I didn't get the memo that everyone would be wearing t-shirts and denim jeans. I hate walking down any stairs with heels on. I am starting to hate high heels. I have many reasons for this but they don't fit in this review. It was dark inside. The security was cool and allowed Ins & Outs.
Its on the pier so there is tons of underground parking. I am unsure of admission cost because I am freaking awesome. There was a line but it moved pretty quickly. Not that I had to wait - That was just my observation.
I owe someone money from the bar.
This club(?) is located within the Redondo Beach Pier just North of Torrance Blvd and...
Boy did we have a great time here on Saturday Aug. 29th!! Well, I did anyway, my wife really isn't a fan of metal. This was a really cool show. The band was "The Iron Maidens", and they are an all-female tribute to IRON MAIDEN. I never got the chance to see them in the 80's, so this was a real treat. These girls were spot on, and amazing. Dueling fretting guitars, totally kick-ass. And at 13 bucks a ticket?? That was what cliched it for me LOL.
The other odd attraction was called "Surfing with the Alien", and this was a one-man tribute to guitarist wizard, JOE SATRIANI. One dude comes out and plays all of Joe's guitar parts against taped music. It was kind of weird. A novelty, but still a little head scratching to it...
Drinks were $7 a piece for well vodkas. The sound set-up was not bad. Our ears got blown out (especially mine) becaus we got some KILLER seats. The staff gave us a reserved seat up front after I told them my wife had a neck injury (she's OK, it was just a kink).
Summing it up, I will say that our first trip to Brixton was a really good one, and hopefully, it's an indicator of what future events might be like. UFO is playing there soon ;)
I stopped by the Brixton last weekend for the first time to see one of my favorite bands play a show. Right off the bat, I could tell that this place is best enjoyed if you do the following:
1) Come here for more intimate shows that are not sold out. Â
2) Get a table.
and, if you do #1 and #2, make sure to do the lesser-known #3 tip:
3) Get your waiter drunk.
We did all three. And, let me tell you, we had a great time. And so did the waiter.
I'm not that familiar with Redondo Beach, so I had no idea what to expect with this place. The Brixton is located practically on the Redondo Beach pier, which was a pretty cool spot to see a show. Parking is very easy since there is a parking garage next door and the venue will validate your ticket. The venue itself is small, but very cool, hip, and a tad swank. It was apparently remodeled within the last year, and it shows.
The first thing I usually do when I hit a new venue/bar is check out the bathroom. It tells me a lot about how my night is going to go. If the bathroom is messy, reeking of alcohol, and covered with vomit stains, that's usually how I'll end up as well. If the bathroom is clean and functioning well, I know I'll make it through without any problems. The Brixton bathroom was not only clean but it was kinda pretty, too, with shiny red-tiled walls and no stains to be seen.
I knew I was in for a good night.
The sound quality was very good and so was the lighting. One thing I did note was that the bass levels seemed much higher than normal. The ceilings are very low so, although the acoustics are actually quite good, the bass levels reverberate much louder than anything else. This was not a problem for me since I'm all about the bass. Bring high quality earplugs if you're not with me on that one.
Back to my #2 tip - do make sure to get a table. I don't know how other nights at the Brixton go but, when we walked in during the opener, we managed to snag a table right away. The server came over immediately and informed us that the tables were for $100 minimum drink orders. Considering I was with my wolf pack (yes, ladies can join one too) comprised of former frat-house members, this was not going to be a problem.
#3 Tip - Our server* was hilarious. He kept bringing out new shots to try and would then proceed to shoot them down with us - *try this - it's called a Girl Scout Cookie! This one is the house special - it's called a Fucken' A!*
Now, I know that this is not totally uncommon in bars/clubs/music venues, but after the 3rd or 4th shot, we marveled at how he could even carry huge trays of drinks over. However, by the 5th or 6th round, the Fucken A's were described more like *heeeeyyyyyy, heeeere's anutha fffffugggggen ayyyyyy for all youse guysssssthhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!*
God bless that dude. God bless the Brixton. And god bless Fucken A's.
*The server's name was omitted in order to protect his identity...and his job.
Great shows, decent venue, but as someone before me has stated, the bartendress is so rude and lazy that I didn't give her a tip. Â If it weren't for the great entertainment, I wouldn't go back just because of the rude bartenders.
Note: I wrote this long ago. Perhaps the reviews have been read and they've hired nicer people? I wouldn't know. I haven't been there for a long time...
I first visited this place about a year ago when it was Harvelle's. I'll go here to see a performer or band I like if I'm on a list or the cover isn't expensive but I wouldn't if I have to pay anything more than $10 and here's why.
-You have to pay for parking (although a hour is about $2.50 so it's not as bad as $20 up in LA)
-No beer on tap
-No food (but you can bring in food from the Pier vendors...I guess that's cool, but who wants to be catching whiffs of funnel cake and corn dogs in a bar/music venue)
-When it was Harvelles we could find seats, now there are "reserved" signs and booths go unused.
-There are HUGE pillars that block the view of the stage...It's really hard to get a view of what's going on.
-We had to show our ID's 3 times before we even entered the veneue.
I'm glad Brixton and Saint Rocke are down the street from me and I can occasionally catch live shows and discover new music and see old bands from the 80's without leaving my bubble, Â but as much as I hate driving up to LA and dealing with parking, LA still has superior live music venues.
I came for an acoustic show a little while back. Â Good sound. Â The layout is a main floor with a knee-length elevated stage, elevated VIP area behind the soundboard in the back, a bar on one side, and elevated table seating on the other.
I don't know why everyone is griping about the staff. Â The doorman was nice until I gave him a snippy comment. Â He shot a snippy comment right back. Â I deserved it. Â I shouldn't have been an ass.
Security didn't bother me.
Anyway, the website says that they have three beautiful ladies bathrooms. Â I went looking. Â I found one. Â What they mean is they have three stalls decked out in black and red tile. Â I guess it's pretty enough.
I saw Strung Out with a few opening bands last week. Â The sound wasn't bad. Â The security outside molested me before going in the first time but they allow ins and outs with handstamps and don't check when I go back in (I always find that weird). Â Security on the inside wasn't too bad. Â Usually at shows like this I see juiced up goons putting kids in headlocks for dancing in the circle pit (it's a punk show...it happens) but no real problems with this show. Â I should note that the security did look like juiced up goons that probably wear Tapout and affliction t-shirts when not at work but did not act too much like goons.
The cool part about this place is that the 3rd band sucked so I could go walk around the pier and get a few beers at other places while I waited for Strung Out to play.
It wasn't a great venue to watch a show. Â Theres a lot of obstructions of view and the stage is pretty low so it's hard to see the band but at least I could hear them pretty well.
You invite a socal punk staple to play a show and you only charge 10 bucks a head. Nice, but whats with all the security?
Part of the excitement of a punk show is that lack of security and a feeling of chaos. The feeling that the crowd could just erupt at any moment and people will get knocked down and stepped on a few times, but then picked up and pushed along for another round.
It's an amicable form of aggression and is expected.
Yes, sometimes people do get hurt, but so what? People also slip in the shower or get in car accidents... that's just life.
Right from the get-go, you'll have to put up with some overgrown JUICER patting down your junk and searching through your cigarettes.
As you're being molested by this jerk off you're thinking:
"Wait. Am i being booked?"
I'm not really sure why this place is hosting the likes of Guttermouth, but I'll at least give them some credit for doing so.
A star for having decent sound and inviting a great band.
Another star for a respectable bar and a nice booth/VIP areas with views of the show/crowd.
One more star for no-one being critically injured.
Minus two stars for no-one being ABLE to get critically injured because of the dozen sweaty meat heads patrolling the place like it's the LA County Jail rec yard.
The lazy arrogant DRUNK staff alone merits this place one star. My buddies band played last night with Fishbone: the sounds were great, but that has nothing to do the this place as a bar (they would have sounded just as good at Saint Rocke or Lighthouse).
There are like 10 bouncers which is completely unnecessary. Â I sat at the bar the entire night, and the 3 people who were standing behind the bar are as follows:
1. the 'older' bartendress who failed to make eye contact with us the entire night, despite me waving $ in the air
2. The barback who took my brothers drink (a nice tequila on the rocks) while there was still half the drink left. Â He gave my brother attitude when my bro told him he had just tossed $5 worth of tequila, and almost didn't replace the drink for free.
3. The drunk bartendress who was wasted before the crowd even showed up. Â At one point, she served us a beer and within a minute, she asked us if we were just gonna sit at the bar all night, or if we we're gonna order something (keep in mind, the room is basically empty). We held up our beers and said "what are you talking about? you just served us these beers. Yes, we are drinking.' She had already forgotten she served us. What an idiot......Another example: she knocked over a full bottle of beer, and just threw a towel at the person sitting in front of the spilt beer as if it was up to them to clean it up for her. Â Everyone sitting around us was looking at each other like 'what is wrong with this chick?!' Eventually she throws herself up on the bar so she can reachthe beer and starts mopping up it up with the towel, splashing it all over the chick sitting at the bar. Amateur hour.
All in all, the tunes were good, but this bar blows. The entire time, my brother and I were just mentally lowering the tip on our tab. At the end of the night, we ended up leaving such a low tip that we actually ran out of the bar because we didn't want to have to deal with the drunk bartender finding out that she got $5 on a $70 tab. Â She didn't even deserve that much.
Stay away.

Review Source:I went to Brixton's for the Harp Blow Out with my wife and a couple friends Saturday, Feb 7 for $35 ea. Â
We arrived 8:05, got the tix at will-call. The room was as packed as a mosh pit. Â Not only were there no seats available (and no dance floor, literally packed elbow-to elbow), those that came 2 hrs earlier at 6pm (!) to get seats were now mostly blocked by us standees, so they had no a view of the stage!
One of my guests had back probs and couldn't stand for hours (and I had no desire to), the manager Whitney said that if my friend "had an actual disability and needed accommodation they had a special room" - but it was full! Â
So we had to leave. Â Damn!! Â Sure, the manager (Whitney) offered me a refund, no consolation for missing a long-awaited show, and no cost to Brixtons, people were lined up for tix outside.
I think Brixtons was cheap and greedy, Â they should have put chairs on the dance floor (there was absolutely no room to dance anyway!) and sold fewer tix.
They knew exactly how many people were coming to enjoy the "sold-out" show, perhaps a hundred more tix than the space could handle. Â Indeed, I would easily wager 10-1 they far exceeded the Fire Marshal capacity. Â They should be glad I didn't call the FD (I wouldn't do that to the musicians.)
The managers of Brixtons exemplify the worst of venue runners, caring only about numbers and not about the people or their enjoyment of the music.
By the way, as my friends stood there for about 30 minutes while I sought seats and solutions, they never got a chance to even buy a drink, it was so crowded!
Don't support Brixton's until/unless they change their greedy policies. Â At least don't go to popular shows if you want to be comfortable and get service!
As someone who used to frequent Harvelle's I can confidently say that The Brixton is much closer to being everything I wanted in a local venue (it was always a little too laid-back for my taste). The Brixton is all about Rock n Roll and in my experience last night they paced the night perfectly and took advantage of the great sound system in the room.. without it being too loud for conversation.
Drinks were fast and the management was very friendly (after they heard we were local they bought our first drinks!) so this one-night stand might turn into a beautiful new relationship. Naja's, you're dead to me.
