They were consistent for a couple of years but during recent visits the food quality was appalling, specifically the ribs, which were not meaty and dry to boot. Plus the chicken was not as tasty as it usually is.
I also noticed that a lot of cops hang around the joint now, which is sometimes a good and sometimes a bad thing as it's a small place and cops tend to talk too loud and too much sometimes.
One thing doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other but the combination makes me want to avoid this place for now and check out their other locations on Stuyversant in East Orange and Chancellor in Irvington.
I find it very funny to see so many chops considering this "Portuguese food". While they do serve chorizos, and garlic shrimp which can barely consider any establishment "Portuguese cuisine", this place is just a BBQ joint. If you are looking for Portuguese/Spanish food, go elsewhere.
Now to review the food they are actually known for....The BBQ chicken is pretty damn good. The portions they serve per dollar are unbeatable. I've tried almost everything this place has to offer minus the churrasco, and the chicken is the best they have.
If you want to feed your troops, and don't want to break the bank this is your place.
One tip for anyone that consistantly gets dry chicken. Tell them NOT to cut the chicken. Leaving it whole and pulling it apart yourself makes a world of difference for keeping these birds juicy on the ride home.
My only gripe about this place is ...from time to time i get a miniscule chicken with barley any meat.. Maybe some chickens are forgotten and don't get their daily hormone shots.
I'll be honest, I do like this restaurant but not necessarily for it's food but rather the value. If you're low on cash and are just in serious need of eating something that will keep your stomach from attacking the rest of your body then Burnet BBQ is the answer to all of your prayers. Not always the most delicious as there are countless other Iberian food places in the area, but it definitely gets the job done.
The restaurant is set up like that of a take out and it's not easiest environment to sit and eat because of the heat and many smells wafting throughout the restaurant due to all the cooking which leads most (like myself) to order take-out. If it ever happens that you must sit and eat, the staff, in particular, the two ladies who take orders are quite nice and are always great with making recommendations and conversation.
This place is alright in my book and I look forward to stumbling in on one of their more SAVORY days...
Well, it is what it is, decent, edible, long waits, poor service whether pickup or delivery.
Portions are HUGE and that coupled with sort of convenience is what makes me go here maybe 8 to 10 times a year.
There is amazingly better and overall excellent Portuguese food within about a 15 minute drive each way compared to this, so sometimes I ask myself why I go here and it's basically cause they deliver and I only order from here when I get deliver due to laziness and or/being buzzed and not driving during football season and being sick of Italian or Chinese.
It's not that it's necessarily bad, but it's inconsistent and overall very meh.
And while we're on the topic, I was just one their website and it says they own Clark Barbeque as well.
What gives?
Clark Barbeque is excellent for the price. The meat is different and is obviously slow cooked so it's tender and pulls apart and the oil it's cooked in is obviously infused with something, whether as simple as fresh garlic and maybe onions with some common spices and they put some giardiniera. almost comes together like a scarpiello.
The rice is different too, although sometimes I prefer the cheap yellow faux spanish rice at the Union locations.
Maybe they just recently bought that location and to my unpleasant surprise it will downgrade to the Union style soon?
Eh anyway, to sum it up, cheap HUGE portions, decent food, but nothing to right home about, although satisfying and solid when you're tying one on...
oh glorious glorious bbq, stealer of my heart, maker of my day i lay these slaughtered animals and their tasty tasy juices before you in hopes that you will warm my belly and my soul. glorious bbq please dont leave me i love you. when i come back to this place for work i'll visit you again and we can make sweet sweet masticational love i will chew you like rawhide as you drip down my chin each new bite will deliver the juice of your love washing over my tastebuds... and in unison we will repeat our mantra fuck p.e.t.a. fuck them over and over until our flesh is one.
Review Source:Four Stars for what it is: Â inexpensive and satisfying food. Â Burnet BBQ is a great alternative for those nights when I'm not up for cooking an entire dinner. Â I love getting the rice with garlic sauce (make sure to ask for the sauce on the side! Â Don't plan on getting kissed by your significant other for a couple days after consuming that potent delicious concoction). Â I usually grill my own chicken at home because Burnet overcompensates blandness with way too much salt! Â They are not chincy with any portions, even their simple salad (which is nice and leafy). Â
The parking is a real pain and orders aren't always correct when I pick-up. Â Make sure to check your order before you leave!
Love this place. We always order delivery and have never ate inside.
Yes they do take a while to deliver but only because they do make everything fresh., give yourself a 45 min window when you order.
We always order the chicken platter with rice and vegetables and it is always DELICIOUS.
We get the shell steak platter once in a while, however  my only gripe is sometimes the steak is filled w fat and not  enough meat...so it can be hit or miss.
Overall this place is really good for $20 you can get a platter that feeds
2-4 people depending on how much you eat w Salad or soups included.
The price is super reasonable and it tastes like good home cooking.
Don't know about the other stuff people have ordered, but the chicken is always spot on.
This place doesn't have the best bbq, but it is convenient for me so that's why I go. You should allow 20-30 minutes for your food to be ready if you're calling in an order. It's nice to see that all the meats are prepared fresh. The portions are HUGE, one half order can easily feed two ppl. The meats could use some seasoning, but I just add the hot sauce that they give. Hot sauce makes it all better. This place is tasty and affordable, what more could you ask for?
Review Source:Ohhhhhh BBQ chicken and ribs please get in my belly. I have yet to try other Churrasqueeiras, but for a lunch meal nothing tastes better than BBQ food.
I work not too far from here but hate going here b/c of street parking the people here kinda scare me. I get easily intimidated :/ ... so I go and bring my coworker who has a soft side for the 2 voluptuous women that work behind the counter, who also have a soft side for him.
Combo BBQ meal to go which can easily be shared by 2 for under $10 hell yeah!
Chicken so juicy and tender, such a shame that it lacks flavor. Ribs a little too chewy for me. Â I always have to request spicy sauce because of the food lacking flavor.
I frequent this establishment, sad to say, due to it being the only Portugese Restaurant nearby. Â Don't get me wrong it is very good, but as far as Portugese standards are concered, my friends feel this place is alright.
It's a hit or miss with Burnet, some nights the chicken was juicy, savory, and finger lickin' good, other nights I have to smother it in the spicy sauce they give you.
Service, well the two women who are always there are nice only if you smile at them. Â Don't expect sensational service. Â
These ladies are standing all day next to a giant BBQ, how would that make you feel?
Churrasqueiras, or Portuguese BBQ take-out restaurants, have been popping up all over this area in recent years. This place in Union has a long-standing reputation, and is one of the best in the area. It got a shout-out in the NY Times several years ago, which is how I discovered it.
There is a long, brick BBQ pit which runs the entire length of one wall. They have a few tables, but it is hot and smoky in the place, so you'll probably want to get your food to go.
Recommended dishes here include the BBQ chicken, BBQ ribs, garlic shrimp, pork cubes sautéed with clams, and the steak sandwich on a hard roll with cheese and sautéed onions. Entrees are served with your choice of rice or french fries, and steamed carrots and cabbage. If you are a carb junkie, ask for rice and fries w/a smaller portion of veg.
The portions here are gigantic. A $10 plate is easily enough for two people to share. A single, $10 to-go order fills a disposable roasting pan big enough for a Thanksgiving turkey.
