Solid Sushi and Thai take out.  I love that the sushi is so fresh and colorful... even with take out.  The prices are pretty fair for what you get as well.  The thai food is really well done, the curry packs a lot of heat and the rice noodle dishes are done well... no clumps of noodles or mushy noodles.

My wife and her brother and his girlfriend went there on Saturday night.  The place was pretty nice....not to crwded when we got there so there was no wait for the reservation which was nice.  The rolls where very good.  We had some Hurricane and Spicy Dragaon and the Sweet potato ones where out of this world.  Service was good, fun times

I have been at the physical location once , don't remember the details but I recently ordered from here and had it delivered. I ordered the Pad Thai (uh yeah) which was excellent, the wide noodles were perfect and the dish was delicious. I also ordered Chicken fried rice which was perfect. The portion sizes were larger then other places and actually less expensive. In both cases I would have liked more chicken with my dishes but otherwise I have to say that this is now my favorite Thai carryout place.

    Later....

Very mid-to-low range stuff here.  I've tried the red curry and the salmon teriyaki and its just not that good.  It tastes like something I could make myself using food I bought from Dominicks and a recipe off the internet.  I expect more from a restaurant, even at this price point.  This place is only for people who live in the neighborhood who are either too lazy or without a car to go someplace better so you settle for here.

Weather I'm looking for a sit down sushi dinner, BYOB option, quick birthday celebration dinner, lunch, or take out I can always depend on Butterfly Sushi! I love their quick and friendly service, the price is just right, and BYOB is not restricted! They are always packed and reservations are usually a MUST.

I always order the summer roll, spicy chicken, and for an entrée I stick with the Salmon Teriyaki with extra Japanese potato salad.  YUM.

I have also had their Tom Kar soup which is flavorful, Ndl Panang noodles (wide rice noodles, coconut milk and basil leaf), Pad Woon Seen (when I need to be healthy)

Seaweed salad - great generous portions

Overall this is my go to spot for quick FAST SUSHI and Thai!

Indoor and Outdoor seating but not much - but all good there.
The waitresses here can barely speak english and rush you - way too much- then forget to bring things or you'll have a couple of them ask you wut you'd like to order - UM use sections to prevent this problem - its annoying.
They like to rush you here and seat the next table - so I prefer carryout.

the HAND ROLLS are great.  Curry is good but taste pretty similar to one another which isnt right. Salads are great

There were a few problems with our visit today.  The sushi was great but the service and the smell that came from the basement every time the door opened was horrible.  We will never go back for these reasons.

We have ordered carry out and delivery from the Madison Butterfly before, and we have never had a poor experience.  Tonight, however, we had the worst sushi that we have ever had hands down.  We ordered four different rolls, each of which we have had numerous times before.  Every single piece fell apart as we were picking it up with our chop sticks.  It was a mess.  We ended up eating the pieces with our hands while making every possible attempt to recreate the roll.  For $55, I think we should be able to eat with dignity versus our hands and about 20 napkins apiece.

I used to eat at Butterfly on Grand a few years back until I realized that there are so many better, cleaner and fresher sushi places in Chicago. The price is definitely attractive and the sushi is sub par and bland.

A girlfriend and I went to the butterfly restaurant on Madison. I believe they opened up over a year ago. It looks identical to the other two locations. I was not impressed. The service was not good at all. Someone took our order then 2 mins later someone else came up to us and ask if we were ready to order ... no problem, we said someone took our order already. Then another 2 mins later another person came and asked the same thing. Ok, now that was getting annoying. Back to the first lady who took our order... seemed very annoyed and not wanting to take our order and then about 10 mins later she asked us if we can get up and move to the next table so she can seat a party of 4... EXCUSE ME? Who does that when your guest are in the middle of eating. That was a total turn off. After that it just kept going downhill and the food started tasting worse and worse...

I will never go back there even if you paid me or offered me free food. Thank you.

Super awesome Thai food, super awesome sushi and most important...cheap. The atmosphere is upscale and trendy. Most entrees were less than $10!  And the portions were HUGE!

I have been to Butterfly numerous times and this time service was really slow even though the place was not crowded. My food was great, I had the Americano and the surf clam. I also had some kind of spicy beef noodle soup and spicy beef fried rice. They were all very delicious. I will be back.

Sushi was great and service was also as expected.  The only thing is that it's a small location, so you're sitting very close to people and it gets hard to have a conversation with them being inches apart from you.  Other than that, the food was great and I'd definitely eat from here again, but probably take out.

The food is good as is the ambiance. Get's crowded so make a reservation. I like that it is BYOB. I am only giving it 4 stars because it is your typical asian fushion/sushi restaurant and it is nothing special, but it hits the spot when you want some good asian food at a good price + BYOB.

It's been a while since I've been to Butterfly so you bet I was super excited to have lunch here today at the Madison location!  To my dismay, Butterfly was a huge disappointment.

    1) Service was unbelievable - in the worse way!  Really, how long does it take to get the server's attention?  Ok, I was sitting outside but so were 2 other parties.  Do you just forget about the ones ouside?  If you're looking to come here during the lunch hour ... I suggest against it unless you can easily take 2 hours off.  Just to pay was incredibly slow.   If you want to eat their food, better to do carryout.  However, are you sure you want to come here?  Look at number 2).

    2)  Sushi was poor - I hate mushy rice and to top it off my spider roll was warm!  Sushi should be served room temp.  Sushi was not fresh at all.  I also hate it when sushi is just doused with sauce.  I usually don't have soy sauce w/ my sushi as I like to taste and feel the texture of the sushi.  I guess the sauce was to hide the many flaws.

    3)  My fav appetizer - thai escargot had the right flavors but why was the sauce gritty?  How gross is that?  Then we only got 2 pieces of garlic bread to eat with this yummy curry?  What a waste of the sauce but in the end not really when it was gritty!

I really hope the service and quality has not gone down at the other locations, especially the one on Grand.  That's the one I frequented the most and never had any issues for big or small parties.

Came here a bit before the lunch rush one day last week. Wife ordered soup and some sushi.

She got both long before I got my Thai noodles, couldn't bring them out together. Thai food is great, if you can wait. Sushi (rice), not the best.

Fantastic thai place in the West loop!  Funky decor, good service.  Great bubble tea and flavorful thai food.  My brother and sis-in-law who live in the west loop frequent this place pretty often when thai food cravings rise.  They get the sushi here which they swear by.  Their outdoor area seemed a little crowded and the seating inside was a little tight too, but not anything horrible.

The look of this place is amazing...just wish the food and service matched it. The inside seating is small and cramped at times. The service felt like we were lost in translation. It took forever for the waitress to take our order and when she did we weren't sure she got it because she didn't look like she was paying attention.

The sushi was ok - not terrible, just ok. If you are looking for a sushi place, this place is food for the occasional sushi fan.  The thai food - pad see ewe had very little flavor. The chicken was extremely dry and the noodles seemed liked they were over cooked. My other friends had some curry which they said was good.

Sometimes when I'm hung over I crave sushi...and Thai food...and about ten other types of grub to soak up the booze from the night before. Well, Butterfly is a beautiful place to order delivery and knock out two of those that tempt me.

The sushi won't knock your socks off, but if you want to fill up on rolls without having to take out a second mortgage it's definitely your spot. The Thai was really good and obviously keeps better if you're ordering in too. Green curry is my recommendation. Spicy and super filling with nice crispy veggies.

There's a bit of a language barrier with the folks working the phone so you'll have to speak slowly, but Butterfly is more than worth it for the price, quality, and effort you'll have to put towards getting the food in your belly.

HORRIBLE SERVICE...they are sometimes rude, push you to order and hurry you to finish.

Veggie choices are ok but southcoast sushi is way better. The price is what keeps me coming back...can't find rolls for $4.

The thai dishes are just ok...nothing special at all

Went here following a DePaul graduation on a Saturday afternoon. Our party was seated toward the front by the windows, which meant a few had barely any room behind them. Seating people like that is a little ridiculous - the restaurant needs to figure a better way to use that space.

BYOB option was nice and pricing for West Loop was pretty fair. Our party had both Thai and Sushi dishes and everybody was fairly satisfied. Appetizers were pretty good too. Service was OK - entrees took a little while to get out and completely deliver.

If I was in the area and looking for Thai or Sushi, I'd try it again.

Meh. That's pretty much how I feel about this place!

I came with a group of three on a Friday night (no reservation) and it was super easy to get a table right away. We had crab rangoons and vegetable shumai as appetizers and both were good. I tried my friend's panang curry and liked it. I had the spicy shrimp and dragon maki (Unagi, tempura crumbs, cucumber with an avocado and eel sauce) which were okay, but I've had better sushi. Service was spotty and our waitress seemed to have a hard time understanding us. It's BYOB and  they do not charge a corking fee, which is a plus.

This place got super packed as the night went on though. During our meal, a couple with a semi truck of a stroller were seated next to us. We had to move our table and scoot over a little, which put us practically on top of the people at the table on our other side. not fun!

If I were to come back, I'd probably go to the original location.

I tried the original Butterfly a few years back and I remember having an enjoyable experience (I tried some sushi and also an appetizer that had snails and curry with toast - pretty unique and yumo). A friend wanted to meet up at this location and I was completely for it. I got the pad thai and I was happy with it. Good flavor and nice portion. This is definitely a consideration next time I want to go somewhere close for Thai.

Butterfly is a good destination if you want your thai and sushi filling in one spot. I personally don't think the two compliments each other very well, but there has been a lot of Thai + Sushi restaurants popping up all across town. Thai is sour, spicy, and sweet on one hand. While sushi is fresh and does not require a lot of flavor. So when you mix the two, it really takes away from one another. The flavors from the thai food contaminates your taste buds for the taste of fresh sushi.

The menu has all the common and popular Thai dishes as well as over-priced sushi rolls. I came here one evening with the lady for dinner. We ordered 2 rolls and the peanut sauce with chicken over broccoli.

The salmon and tuna tasted fresh. The presentation of the rolls were also superb, so no complaints with the sushi. The thai chicken dish was also good, however I felt the sauce was a bit too thick and overly sweet. But I personally prefer salty over sweet, so it could just be me.

The restaurant also has a pretty nice ambiance with the dimly lit room and candles on the table. The only gripe I have is the proximity of the tables between each other. I could've gone without over hearing distinctively how the lady at the table next to us was being neglected by her man-friend, haha.

Low budget all-around. Sure, the prices are good (as compared to other downtown sushi places) but you get what you pay for. From the minute we walked in being greeted by apathetic hostesses to having to sit at the sushi bar (even though tables were open) through the diet coke in cans and the BYOB, this place is subpar. The sushi is average, the edamame is below average and the potstickers taste like they were from a frozen bag at Costco. I've had better sushi at Whole Foods. The bathrooms were gross and the other supporting staff members looked like they worked in the back room of some lame Chinese food place.

Oh and back to the sushi bar, after being told we couldn't get a table, they seated a couple next to us at the bar and the woman complained and they gave her a table. Was not happy about that.

If you want a lower cost sushi spot that's no frills hit Naniwa on Wells. This place disappoints for a West Loop location.

Any restaurant that makes me squeeze my butt through a 3 inch crack to sit down gets two stars.  Sorry ladies.  You have to look at my heiny in order for me eat.  Ugh.  We pulled the table out just so I could get out at the end of our meal.  Everyone looked at me like I was loony but you know if that means not dipping my rear in someone's miso than so be it.

That being said - food was so so, service was average.  Rolls were expensive for what we got and in the end I have had better. Next!!

I was pretty excited for Thai on Madison.  So, I had my husband pick up a couple of dishes for take out tonight.  Suffice it to say it was really gross.  I ordered the Rama noodles.  It was basically a bucket of peanut sauce with 4 noodles, 3 pieces of broccoli, and 1 piece of bell pepper (yes I counted) and then they had the most enormous chunks of tofu that I've seen in a dish.

My husband had the pad thai which is hard to mess up....also not good.

In summation, disappointing, not tasty, and even at $8 overpriced for a dish consisting mainly of sauce.

Ok so I got delivery on two separate occasions and here are the results:

    Sushi:

-Crunchy spicy tuna roll: not so crunchy after being delivered. Was disappointed but maybe it would be better fresh, in-house.
-California roll: disappointing; slightly sour tasting despite the seemingly fresh ingredients. Would not order again, probably not good in-house.
-Fire Dragon Roll: AMAZING! And probably even more amazing in-house! Too expensive though ($14) =(

    Entrees:

-BBQ Pork Fried Rice: bf says it was delicious, and the bite that  I tried was delicious too!
-Green curry: best entree by far. Generous portion, delicious spices, and the RICE was actually delicious, not that cheap crap that gets piled in with Thai entrees at so many places. Only complaint was that the tofu had a weird texture and I ended up throwing the tofu pieces away and eating the rest of the dish. Lasted like 3 meals for me; would definitely order again (without tofu)!
-Pad Woon Sen:  I liked that it was slightly sweet but not enough overall flavor. The vegetables left a lot to be desired: giant half-cooked chunks of tomatoes, lots of canned corn (hate it!) and a general lack of tastiness. Would not order again, or would try with wider noodles if it wasn't so bland. Meh.

    Drinks:

Mango bubble tea: icy and tasted faintly of bubble gum. Definitely wouldn't order again; stick to Joyees.

    Summary:

Really, this deserves a 3 star rating overall but I have hope for their curries, other sushi, and probably some of the other noodle dishes. Stick to the curry/noodle dishes for delivery, and only expensive sushi rolls.

Cons: Long wait for food. Rice was dry & fell off the sushi. Scallops were bad. Salmon was bland & chewy.

So, I've totally been sleeping on this place.  It's shaping up to be our go to Asian takeout in the WL.

Our first try we got a selection of sushi and such that were not so much to my little lady's liking (heavy handed with the mayo sauces).  So, she kept nixing the idea every time we pondered our takeout options.  That made me a sad panda, as I really liked the curry we got on the first pass.

Last week we hit up Butterfly again for carryout, which is super convenient seeing that it is just across the street.

Up for us on this try were:
    -tom yum soup
    -chicken satay
    -shumai-steamed seafood dumplings
    -vietnamese roll
    -garlic chicken
    -spicy crazy noodle w shrimp
    -spicy basil w chicken
    -panang curry w shrimp

Throw in the comped egg rolls and a very reasonable tab of around fifty bones and we were pretty happy.  We had a bunch of really good starters, all of the dishes were packed with veggies which we love, and we got to chow on the leftovers a few times.  Money well spent.

Food is alright at best. It lacks flavor. Its BYOB so that's always a plus. Price is good. It gets crowded. I would have given it 3 stars, but service is TERRIBLE! There was a server there, a young lady with a really short haircut. I'm not sure if it was her off night, but her attitude was horrible. I would not go back just knowing I may get her as my server. All the others seem decent, but this one yells and is just plain rude. We tried to wave her down and she waved us away. Now that's not good service. Period.

It seems a lot of people have issues with their service....

    Butterfly sushi.NEVER AGAIN.

The sushi is fine. I'll give it that. It's the service I will never go back for.  We stopped in after Yoga (at vessel yoga, strongly suggest) and asked for a table for three. Looking over his clipboard with a side eye, the host said "you really should  make reservations".  Looking around the restaurant at 3 opens 4 tops, that didn't seem like the case (yes, i've worked in the resturant industry, i get it, open tables don't always mean availability but give me a break). We were told to come back at 7:40 and our table would be available (45min after stopping in).  So we leave to walk to a friends house that was 3 minutes away.  10 minutes later, we get a call that a table is available........ what do you know?

Cut to the end of the meal. We had been there exactly one hour.  The host comes over and says "there's a reservation waiting for this table."  Uhmm........ we've been here an hour.  Seriously? I know this because it was 8:50 when they handed us our bill (after I had to ask mister pushy host to take the bill since they wanted us gone so badly) Isn't the normal table time 90 minutes? even at the most downtown location?

Basically, give me a break, i will never, ever, ever be back.

I am new to Chicago and was in the neighborhood. I took a chance on picking a random restaurant and was pleasantly surprised! Service was fabulous and food was delicious and plentiful for a great price. When I found out that it was BYOB, that was a bonus. I'll definitely be back.

This restaurant gives one of my favorite restaurants a run for its money. Looking forward to exploring more of its offerings.

First time at this location and it was as good as usual Butterfly experience!  Yay!  Better space then the one on Grand too...a little roomier :)

Great for large parties and for those that are craving both sushi and thai, aka have friends that don't eat raw fish :)

MUST order the curried thai escargot for appetizer with EXTRA bread, its fantastic!

This place in particular had HUGE chunks of tuna and salmon in their regular rolls, bigger then in the one on Grand, for sure.  Specialty rolls tasted the same, which is good for carrying through the Butterfly brand.

BYOB a definite plus!  Will return shortly!

We sat outside. It was warm and sunny, a nice pallette for an early (around 6:15pm) dinner at Butterfly... the only question was, would Butterfly cooperate?

    Indeed they would.

So a few of the blocking and tackling pieces: courteous service, frequent but not too many stops by our table, she checked to make sure we had our orders right, was very nice.  They always asked if we were done with things before they removed them from our table. Water glasses were kept full at all times. Perfect.

Food: excellent.  The Volcano and Red Dragon Maki were superb and also BIG. They do not skimp.  We also got Crunchy Spicy Tuna which also delivered.  Very good tuna.  The presentation was also above expectations, especially the Volcano Maki.

My wife got a Thai Iced Tea and that was also great.

Vaule: PHENOMENAL.  My wife and I went to Japonais last week, one of our favorites... but the service was AWFUL outside there, especially considering the price... when I saw my bill at Butterfly I was so angry at Japonais I may never go back. We got way more than our money's worth at Butterfly and much better service.  Obviously the ambiance is a little different but I'm not willing to pay *THAT* much more just for ambiance, especially if its coupled with an obnoxious and absentee service person.

Butterfly delivered on almost all cylinders.  The only thing I took a star away for was the wobbly table which caused my soy concoction and water glass to slosh / spill several times - yea, I'm a klutz, but I don't need any help from a wobbly table.

I am not in love with the Butterfly sushi chain like some of my friends. I ate here yesterday for the first time, and enjoyed my meal, but wasn't blown away. My chicken satay appetizer was the best part of my meal. The rolls i ordered, the spicy tuna and the futo maki, were average and bad. The spicy tuna was average and the futo was just plain bad (in all fairness a good futo maki is hard to come by).

The restaurant is clean, and the staff was friendly. Will i rush back? No. Would i object if i found myself eating here again? Only if I'm picking up the tab for a group.

I used to Love butterfly sushi before they opened this location. I ordered almost every week. My mom actually got food poisoning from the Grand location and I actually STILL ordered from them after that, thats how much I Loved it.

This location is just not good., I ordered sushi from there and it was inedible. Inedible! I actually couldnt eat sushi for a month after that. I know, a real tragedy!!I  Anyway, I called and they said they would give me a $5 credit. Fine, whatever. Then when I called to get a salad from there and wanted to use it, they said I didnt have any credit.  I actually argued with them for awhile about it but gave up. I dont have to work that hard for $5 anymore, thank G-d! I am so over it. Butterfly Sushi, you are dead to me!

I do not know for whatever unearthly reason, but my girlfriend loves this place.  I don't.

My personal feelings about Chicago and quality sushi or thai (or lackthereofs) aside, I don't think Thai and Sushi should ever be served from the same kitchen.  One is about subtle flavors and textures while the other is in-your-face spices and peanuts and what not.  They do not compliment, one overwhelms the other.

So this place, for my taste, was doomed from the start.  But regardless, this is my girlfriend's goto spot and it's byob so I've eaten here handful of times...

Their Thai selection is always over-spiced and over-seasoned without any balance.  Their sushi is... well it's Chicago sushi... it's not Butterfly's fault.  We are just at a geographic disadvantage when it comes to fresh quality seafood.

Bad service as well.  Not horrible or rude... but just kinda annoying having to flag them down from 10 feet away just to get some more water or to get the check.

As I work my way through the trilogy of Butterfly Sushi Bars in the city, I continue to be impressed. Good food, fast, friendly service and BYOB. What more could a girl ask for?

We stopped in their newest location. The place was busy but not packed and we were immediately seated in the banquette that runs the length of the wall. This location is less dark than the one on Grand and the bathrooms alone deserve a shout out as the women's, at least, is one of the nicest I've seen in the West Loop. Glass tile, bowl sink, VERY clean.

We ordered a range off of their menu. Egg Rolls (Thai style), crunchy spicy tuna roll, Sunrise roll (tuna, cilantro, jalapeno) and finally the Cashew chicken.

The rolls were quite good (they have quite a list of standard and signature rolls) and the food comes up very quickly. The cashew chicken was a huge portion (definitely splittable) and was also quite tasty. The only thing I was surprised at was that the chicken was battered and fried. Next time I am going to see if they will just pan cook it for us.

We didn't bring any wine to drink so water was our beverage of choice and service was so on it's game, our glasses were refilled again and again, and our dirty plates removed and replaced between courses. They seem to work in teams here and we had three people taking care of us at all times which, while a little confusing at first, sure made the evening move along flawlessly.

If you drive- street parking is usually easily available unless there is a game going on at the United Center. Try on Racine or Washington if you get stuck. Dinner for two ran about $28. A great deal for all the food we consumed!

Lots of orders to go being prepared. Many happy faces around us. Butterfly sushi is just what this strip of Madison needed!

Nice BYOB. No corkage fee, and the Butterfly staff really hooks it up. When they saw our bottle of wine, the staff immediately came with the glasses and a bucket of ice.

Food was fine, the spicy tuna was outstanding!

As far as Butterfly's "time limit", it is true. When I called for a 8pm reservations, they asked that we leave by 930. The place was packed, so I can understand why they wanted to keep traffic moving.

Overall an outstanding place for the price, will return.

    New Butterfly location...!

I agree with Mandy A, when anything besides a dry cleaner, nail salon (which of course, I do love), slobby sports bar, or kitchen supply warehouse opens along Madison...I'm happy. In fact last night after surveying our dinner options I do declare that Butterfly may be the ONLY "ethnic" restaurant on Madison between Halsted and Damen. That's 12 blocks and sushi/thai is as worldy as it gets!? Well, guess we'll take it!

Obviously the Grand location is very popular, so much so that I typically avoid it because I am not a fan of waiting and there are a bazillion sushi/thai places. HOWEVER, I do realize it must be popular for reasons other than BYOB (of course, a plus) and so when I saw the papered windows on Madison announcing Butterfly's welcome voyage into the dessert of ethnic eats (aka West Loop)...I was pretty stoked to have a 'hood joint for takeout/delivery and the occasional casual dinner.

I arrived at 7pm last night (Thursday) and the only seats in the very packed, fairly narrow/tiny house were at the bar. Totally acceptable and very spacious for a sushi bar. We got to witness the sushi chefs making magic behind the counter (tip them!) and all 5-6 of them worked their dragon-loving tails off the entire night. In fact...all of our service was really on point. We had no less than 5 people waiting on is, bringing food, taking orders, clearing plates, serving sushi (from the chef himself! pretty easy when he just has to reach over the glass), bringing a little complimentary dessert. You'd think that would get confusing, but they pulled it off very well and all were friendly except the dude who always seemed a little rushed/frantic. However, I'll deal.

    Our order:

    START
Mango bubble tea: served in a real glass! boba was not stellar. (hard/chewy)
    Beef Salad: incredible, and HUGE!
    Cucumber Salad: nice starter, fresh/crisp.
Miso Soup + Edamame: my daily allowance of soy! Standard.

    MIDDLE
    Spicy Tuna Roll: very good!
California: Standard, a bit too much cucumber. Kind of tasteless.
    Sweet potato tempura: yum.
Yellow curry: The winner of the evening.

    FINISH
Little bite of tiramasu. On the house!

All the food was very good, and the speciality rolls we saw coming off the sushi bar looked incredibly indulgent. I will try those next time. I'm indulgent. The Thai/curries really seem to be the winner here though...and are huge portions.

For $60 (including tip) we ate like the King and Queen of the West Loop, and have plenty of curry for lunch today!

    *BYOB
*Street parking can be tough, but at night the parking along Washington is easy peasy. And free!
*Reservations accepted, and recommended for parties 2+.

Three cheers and four stars for Butterfly on Madison...
