I'm writing this review since I was quite surprised at the high ratings and reviews that got me to visit this place. Kai is not bad, but it is just an average sushi restaurant. The interior looks plain, the service was average and the food was just ok -- not exceptional.
I don't get why others think this place is so wonderful. It just doesn't add up.
The quality of the fish is amazing. The Salmon is a must get...it tastes like butter, probably the best salmon sashimi I have ever had (aside from Tsukiji Market in Toyko). Rolls are good too especially the Flaming Roll. The ambiance is blah so I would give that a 3 as well as the service but knowing that we generally order out. Its BYOB so that's another good thing with a wine/beer store next door.
Review Source:For almost three years since joining my current company, my boss has been curious about trying sushi, but was too scared to give it a whirl.  A few weeks ago, she decided that it was time, and she was ready.  And while I wanted to take her to the old school Kamehachi joint in the Gold Coast, I found out it was closed, and had to turn to Yelp to find something worthwhile  Kai Sushi came up in the list.
Ambiance: Â It's not your upscale fancy big money sushi place. Â You walk in, and there are tables, a simple 5-6 seater sushi bar, and not much else. Â Small and simple, walking in had me a little worried to be honest. Â I'm glad that I was able to set those fears aside.
Quality: Â The rolls were displayed beautifully, and tasted excellent. Â Spider Roll, White Tiger Roll, Chicago Fire Roll all good. Â Rolls weren't over riced, and the combinations played well with each other. Â One of the rolls featured mango slices, which was also quite inventive and enjoyable. Â While I can't say much for the quality of the fish (since it was the boss's first time, wanted to keep her on lightly raw, mostly cooked rolls), we did start with a tuna tataki which was very tasty.
Verdict: Â All in all, very reasonably priced, and a great introduction for my boss into sushi. Â While it's not walkable from the office, we'll swing in whenever we might be in the area for some enjoyable sushi!
