I Love this place on Thursday nights! Old school/new school hip hop and some RnB thrown in. Like everyone else has said it's tiny and hella hot. It's also generally a sausage fest, in otherwords the guy to girl ratio is like 5 to 1. But the music is so good no one seems to care. Just lots of regulars coming in just to dance, catch up and have a good time.

This place is seriously small and sweaty. Best way I can describe it is like a human game of Tetris. That being said, I had a crazy good time here with some friends. Good drinks, decent service, good music and a really fun crowd. I will be coming back.

This was this weirdest bar I have ever been to.... It was long and narrow.. Strange!
Kind of felt like I was on the Bar cart of a train.. Maybe with cooler people it could be fun but when we were just trying to dance people are so on top of each other..

    Transitive Property (kind of):
This bar is weird. I'm weird. Therefor, I like this bar.

Just look at a photo of Carbon from the outside, would you guess it's a bar? Not me. It looks like a storage garage, I couldn't even find the door the first time I rolled through. But once I *did* find the door, I was all over it.

It's small. It's dark. It's intriguing. Oh, and by small, I mean pretty fucking small. Claustrophobics beware. I dig the intimate vibe though, keeps everyone close. I love that they don't open until 8pm, it's like they're flat out saying, "Hey Culver City Nine to Fivers, go fuck yourselves." But then they turn around and make it up to everyone by saying, "Hey hey, sorry about that, how about we have happy hour from 8pm to 10:30?" Hell yes, I'll gladly take a happy hour that goes daily til 10:30pm.

DJs almost nightly from what I can tell, and more often than not I'm pleasantly surprised to find some legit hip hop. Tell me another place in Culver City proper that has a chill dive feel and some DJs kicking out hip hop beats, I doubt you can. If I heard correctly they even have a "vinyl only" night where DJs who can't spin for shit and just stare at their MacBook Pros have to take the day off.

I've had fun conversations with bartenders and patrons alike at this spot, like I said it's pretty small so you better be comfortable talking to people. Chatting up people at dive-ish bars is a hobby of mine, so I'm always down for some Carbon. Nothing really like it in Culver City, maybe The Mandrake Bar comes close but Mandrake is bigger and way down on La Cienega.

Bored with Culver City? Check out Carbon, it's definitely got it's own thing going on.

This might just be the smallest bar I've ever been to lol. But what it lacks in size, it definitely makes up for in awesome music.

I've only been here on Saturdays (when the music is mostly Hip Hop - New & Old, with a little Reggae mixed in). The DJ is always awesome and plays music my friends and I love to dance to. Drinks aren't too expensive and I've never had to pay a cover to get in. This is usually where my friends and I go after a night out somewhere disappointing (bad music, weird people, etc.) or where we go when we just want to dance & chill and don't feel like "dressing up".

Carbon is not for the claustrophobic...so definitely stay away if you hate crowds or sweaty people dancing all around you. Oh, yes I said sweaty. It's ridiculously HOT in there so don't wear more clothes than needed.

It's kinda similar to The Room (in Hollywood & Santa Monica) in terms of Music and also alot like The Dime on Fairfax in terms of size (and music depending on the DJ).

Its a dive bar w/ good music and its predictable...often those are are the best kind of bars to go in LA.

Fair warning - if you just typed "bar" in to yelp and this place popped up, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING!!

If you don't like small crowded spaces, if you don't like hip-hop or urban music, if you don't like dark and dive-y bars, this place is NOT FOR YOU!

This is one of my favorite spots to hit up because I know exactly what I'm getting when I go there. If I want to go somewhere with really good hip hop and/or reggae music, Carbon is it.

The only problem that arises at Carbon is that it's pretty small and there isn't much room to move around, so when it gets full, you almost feel like a sardine in a can. It can also get REALLY hot and stuffy, so only wear a jacket if absolutely necessary. But, the drinks are cheap and the bartenders are usually pretty quick at helping everyone out.

    Carbon is quite small...

Don't let the outside deceive you..inside, you can barely walk.

Carbon is basically a bar..and an insy bitsy tiny small dance floor.

It's super dark... get quite crowded..and be expected to have booties bump into you by accident.

On friday night they had hip hop popping. The music was great and people were jamming on the dance floor despite how tiny it was...

It is definitely a divey bar..nothing fancy at all.. very casual.

If you're not rolling with a super huge entourage, you might enjoy this place..if you like to dance and get your groove on.

However, with more people...it might be difficult for you guys to find a place on the dance floor.

I did like the music..but I probably won't return. It really wasn't my crowd.

So came to this place on a whim on a Saturday night, a friend wanted to come here and we dragged a group of guys who did not want to come. haha
First, we get to the place and the bouncer tells us it is full, and then he lets in 3 people in front of us. Okayyy...
It is a TINYYYYYY place, it is more like a hallway with a bar. The dance floor is a small corner near the one bathroom, and it is so dark and crowded. It got really hot in there since there were so many people! This place should not be over max capacity, if there was an emergency there would be no way to get everyone out.
The music was really good, there was a mix of old school hip hop, reggae, and newer hip hop. I enjoyed the music as it brought me back to the middle and high school dance days. It was also nice to hear newer music getting mixed in.
If its your scene, check it out. I would get here early if you really want to check it out so you don't feel like you are in a crowded room.

Friday night hip-hop was great. Happy hour specials until 11pm. Come here to shake, shake, shake you booty. It's a hot box so dress accordingly. I would give it five stars but the bathroom is in an akward place.

Came here with some friends for a co-worker's birthday.  Free entry all night, in and out privileges and THE DOPEST Reggae music outside of Hollywood.  Caution: it's claustrophobic and 85% of the women will walk away from you if you try to dance with them.  This place will have you feeling like you are in a sweat shop gasping for air.  If you plan on coming here to get active, drink plenty of water, put on deodorant and bring a friend with you.  It's not that hard to find even though it's a low key spot.  I think i need to come back before I suffer from any dancehall withdrawals.

Frequented Carbon last Friday with my friend who lives in SGV.  Considering his penchant for dive bars, I figured he would feel right at home at one of Culver City's most illustrious spots for cheap drinks and questionable sanitation.  Of course, we snagged the beginning of happy hour to further allay the financial hit on our pocketbooks.

After a vodka/soda or three, my friend began to get a little sloshed.  A shy person by nature, it seems like alcohol brings out certain attributes in him: namely, talking at a loud volume and intense patriotism.  Indeed, he loudly proclaimed to everyone at the bar, "Chale con ustedes!  It's not fucking Carbon, it's Carr-bone!  Carrr-bone!" employing the Spanish pronunciation of the 6th element in the periodic table.

Needless to say, no one, including your humble author paid very much attention to my buddy's chauvinistic outburst as we were all watching the Jamaican dude (who brought his own hand towel to dry off!) break out some surriouss flavor on the dance floor.

Okay this review is only for Tuesday night - Reggae/Dancehall!

A few months back one of my co-workers who I consider my boy that lives in Culver accidentally stumbled into Carbon on a Tuesday.  Granted he was a little intoxicated but he said he had so much fun that he had to go back.  And I need to be there with him because he knew I was Jamaican.

Well a few months passed and we never got to go together but I decided to roll through with two other coworkers to check this Tuesday night situation out - both from the Caribbean ;)

I got there earlier around 9:15p because I did not know when the place would jump off. My coworkers arrived 45 mins later.  No worries because even though I was the only customer in the bar with Will (bartender) and DJ Spinach - I got two chill and booze with these guys.  Needless to say I was feeling great when the buddies rolled in.

After drinks upon drinks and conversations that only are had over drinks we decided to see who is in the building now that the place is packing it in (now 10:30p/11p). We headed to the dance floor and just rocked it till 1:30am. Only reason we left at that time and not later was because we wanted to hit up the In n Out across the street but it closes at 1am (please note).

Looking back here is what we can share about Carbon to you folks out there thinking about this place:

    - This is not your MAIN STREET crew
    - Good mix of people that are Jamaican/AA/Hisp/White! Did not think it was the ghetto crowd at all! In fact opposite!
    - If you are a female dudes will always try to dance with you. There is NO asking just a slight touch on the elbow or hand as the signal To Get Busy (i.e Sean Paul)
    - Male/Female ratio is 4:1 but a lot of the dudes tend to be wallflowers (the cool kids)
    - It is HOT! I mean temperature hot! You get sweaty!
    - Dress comfortable as a girl (pony tail, no makeup needed, etc). I rocked V-T, Kahkis and Chucks!
    - It is small! This is why it gets hot because lot of peeps and no AC
    - 2 tube TVs with a permanent red hue and they always show some kind of old movie- Kung Fu movies or vintage Blue movies (Jamaicans will know what this means)
    - $3 Red stripes, $4 well drinks till like 10:30p or so for HH!
    - DANCING IS ENCOURAGED!  I mean nonstop if you feel the vibe! Just run with it! Get a workout in then go home you will feel awesome next day (or not). GIRLS YOU WILL BE BOTHERED TO DUTTY WHINE (look it up)! Not cool with it just politely move on :)
    - If you you-tubed Jamaican dance-hall parties - THERE IS NO DAGGERING happening here! hahahaha!
    - Will the bartender from Brazil is cool as hell! He was attentive and kept the booze flowing for peeps!
    - Finally, if you are open - want a change of scene - down for just a good time you will be fine here!

So go! I recommend Tuesday! I probably will see you there (doing the once a month thing cause it is so intensely awesome I cant go every week)!  This place will not be for everyone so just don't force it :)

Big up rude bwoys and gal!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE!

It's a rat hole, ventilation is much needed in this place for sure. Its very low key, you can go in jeans and a tee and just DANCE! It has a terrible smell to it (I HAVE NO IDEA WHY) but the DJ is THEEEEE only reason why we come here. Its so hard to find hip hop spots now a days and I have a great time every time we come here -crowd is very mixed - its great

If I want to dance (which is always) and not spend a ton of money, Carbon is one of my go-to spots in LA.

The venue itself is not that great, so I can't give 5 stars.  It's super hot, small, and not too clean.  Service at the bar is fine, drink prices reasonable, and no cover charge.  But the main reason I come here is for the music.

If you like dancing to hip-hop (which is getting harder and harder to find in LA), go to Carbon.  They play mostly contemporary stuff on weekends and there is sizable crowd dancing by 10-11pm.  You will probably sweat a lot & the atmosphere is pretty low-key, so I don't see any reason to get super dressed up to come here.

It may not be the nicest club / bar in LA or downtown Culver City, but I always have fun at Carbon.

    Fuck this place.
And I really want to like it.

DJ funk Mon night gets 10  stars.  Really good.

Coked out, Ritalin bartender is all I can take.....and I was super patient ......she gets zero stars.
Tired of coming here....I get pumped up, love the atmosphere, and music, and these bitches they hire......make me want to slit my wrists.

White chick w/ blond hair bartender....tonight.....stay away.

    Monday nights Funkmosphere!

Its exactly what it sounds like, a funky atmosphere! Very eclectic mix of people, but everyone boogies down together like its a Friday! The place is small and dark, but the music good, the vibes are good, and its a great place to be on a Monday! Love what the tv plays while the music is spinning

Last night I wanted to take my new roommate out for drinks to celebrate. He says he has never heard of Carbon.  The moment we got tot the front door and he sees the security he stops me and says,

"Wait a second. I have been here before. I had sex in the mens bathroom here."

That in a nutshell is what makes Carbon so great.  Not the dark bathrooms or that you can pick someone up here.  Carbon is the place you can count on to always have a fun time.  I have been bringing friends here for years and they always tell me that its their favorite bar.  It will be yours too.  Guaranteed.

FUNKMOSPHERE: the greatest Monday night dance party you'll ever attend.

Though I needn't say more, you should feel even more enticed to go given the fact that there's no cover, a $4 happy hour till 10:30pm, super easy parking, and down ass folks in attendance. Plenty of special guest DJ's show up on the fly too.

    I ABSOLUTELY love this place!!
I've been here Fridays, Saturday, and my FAVORITE, Tuesdays.

    Pros:
    -Free entrance all the time
    -Cheap Drinks
-Music is awesome. On Tuesdays is reggae night although they still play your mainstream hip hop. Fridays and Saturdays is just hip hop and from time to time they play Spanish music
    -Free Parking
-Bouncers are pretty cool and chill

    Cons:
-One restroom! and the location of it is really bad!
-It can get super hot! To the point where if you're wearing make up, you'll leave without any

These two cons are the only reason why I didnt give it 5 stars!

I really do recommend it! :)

My boyfriend loves this place so we decided to come here for a low key Friday night. The place is dark with lots of red lighting, it's like a mix between a small lounge and a dive bar...but cleaner. We got here around 9PM to take advantage of the happy hour drink specials and the DJ started spinning not too long after. I love that they play hip hop on Fridays! It seemed like the place filled up pretty fast, I'm thinking people come here to pre-game and then head to their next destination. We will def. be back for more drinks!

    Pros
-Love that they have drink specials even on the weekends
    -Great music
    -Awesome bartenders

    Cons
    -Only 1 bathroom :-(
-Parking lot is small.. but free :-)

Carbon is tiny place that has cheap drinks that plays hip-hop.  Happy hour lasts until 10:30PM on Saturday nights, and well drinks are about $4.  Apparently it can get pretty packed on a Saturday night, at least that is what the people who work here have told me on the two times I have visited.  However, both times I have been it has been completely empty until as late as 10:30PM.   I haven't had a chance to stay later and have missed out on when things really get going.  The atmosphere has been very cool when I have been, but I still have to come back to Carbon after 11PM to see what all the fuss is about.  If the vibe is cool as earlier in the night, I'm sure it will be a blast.

Cheap beer and well drinks until 10:30pm.

Bartenders are super nice and down to earth.

Popping music and dance floor in the back of the tiny bar..

More people started showing up around 11pm and it got crowded quickly but hey its no cover charge.

It features: the best hip hip/reggae/ music...and cheap drinks...so I have no real complaints :)

    My Advice would be
-Don't come here if all you want to do is go out and look super hot and wear 5 inch heels. There are other places in LA where you can do that but this is not the bar for that kind of partying.

-Flats, boots, sneakers, and flip flops are welcomed. People were in jeans and a nice shirt.
-Wear less  clothing or something flowly that isn't cotton would help you stay cool in this bar. The bar gets HOT HOT HOT when more people starting coming in.

Nothing I can really add that others haven't already said- it is small, you WILL sweat by dancing your ass off or by just standing....so you might as well get to steppin. bartenders are cool, crowd is chill (for the most part, you may run into some weirdo creepers but that's anywhere- they're just more upfront here) and the music.........PURE FYAH! Fridays for that oldschool hiphop/90s r&b and Tuesdays for reggae/dancehall jams....you can't go wrong!! And the security/doorman was always super cool and funny!

Bottom line, if you like these types of music and don't mind being cramped and sweaty then you are guaranteed a good time. If you aren't into the above mentioned then STAY AWAY....make room for the people who wanna be here! Making my way back soon :-)

On a good night, this place rocks! Good music (throwback and current hip hop/r&b), good drinks, and good people. Oh, and no cover charge!

On a not so good night, the music and DJ are terrible!! It is a very small place, and seating is extremely limited. If you like to have a designated area, arrive early, and I do mean early. It begins to fill in between 10 and 11, so to sit you need to be there before/around 9.30.pm. Bathroom is unisex, one stall, and no mirror! Duh! How can the ladies primp with no reflection?!

Anyway, knowing all that I would still check this place on any given friday or saturday night.

I so wanted to like this spot! I live in the neighborhood and thought this could be a cool spot to hit up, nope!
Tried going twice on a Friday & Saturday night but I guess it just isn't meant to be....

    Place-
Super small, dark and packed! As soon as we got in there, there were people back to back... we just turned around and left because we couldn't even make it to the bar or dance floor. The second time we did make it past the little hall way leading to the bar/dance floor but still everyone seemed to be packed in there like a bunch of sardines and there was hardly any ventilation so we peaced out. Smallest lounge/bar I have ever been in.

    Crowd/ Music-
I'm not too sure about the people that come here but on one of the nights we came, we hadn't even been there more than 2 min. (just in and out) We were talking, minding our own business and these girls seemed to want to fight us or something... wth, crazy ass people.
Music seemed to be good, hip hop, I'm sure new & old school but we didn't stay long enough to know what else or if Dj was good...

    Parking-
Street parking, parking up front and I think behind them.....

Maybe I will try them out during the week and def. come earlier and leave if it gets too packed.... But really where's the fire Marshall at cuz they get way too packed for the space they have or they need to monitor better.

    Carbon is Hot!!!

No not Kim Kardashian in a wet bathing suit hot, but more nuclear solar frying pan hot.

The music is good, and the drinks are fair.  The layout is not bad for a drop by spot but its just too hot to stay there for a long period of time.  I dont like too sweat without working so I cant 5 star this place, but it is cool enough to go to for a little while.

Yes I said cool but not ice, himalayas, ice cream cool, but 1970's Billy D. Williams cool.

Good lord, this place is tiny, hot, and sweaty! It's so small, you're practically forced to dance up on someone (or have someone dance up on you), whether you like it or not! This is probably a good thing for some people, I'm sure. Not me, I like my space, and I like the option of running away if I need to.

As other reviewers have stated: there are lots of shorties and chubbies here. Again, I'm sure this is cool for some people, but I'm definitely not meeting my future husband here.

Redeeming qualities: no cover, no dress code, no hassle.

Very quaint and cozy  from the outside and inside.  OK.  Its a small space.  And on a Saturday night, it was hella packed!   I swear, you are literally body to body with everyone in this bar.   Star -1.

    Stiff drinks Star +1.

    Good music Star +1

Parking situation was free but very limited in the back of the bar.  So thats a  Star-1 off.

When I was about to leave, a boy from the club came towards me asking me to hangout; asking my name & number & where am I going; bla bla bla bla...Gave him a little shove and push to shoo away.   Definitely a Star-1

    Can't win them all:/

When you first arrive, you think; "Am i gonna get shot? i shouldve just stayed home at the crib''.

But when youre here, it feels like home. Its not like skybar, or any fancy joint. And thats what i like. I can hangout here with my skinny jeans and my leather black cortez and not feel out of place. Its just a simple hangout bar. Sometimes it gets too crowded but its cool. I like it here.

Went here Nov 09.  Door people were really nice.  Place is really small.  If crowded, u won't be able to move.  The crowd is about 80%black, 20% latino, 5% white.  The crowd was cool.  The girls were a little thicker.  The guys there did not seem to mind. :-)  Music was hip hop...new & old.  I liked the DJ.
My only negatives were:  Not upscale whatsoever, Too small, too hot, Move those couches out so people can dance!

Having been to one or two crazy concerts in my life, my personal bubble radius isn't too large.  When it comes to try to mingle with some friends and everyone smooshed up against them with cocktails WHILE trying to groove to the DJ spun tunes, I'd like to have a little bit of elbow room.

After getting past the bouncer and what seemed to be a longer than it has business being hallway, the space opened up to maybe...three times the width of the hallway where people were practically cheek-to-cheek.  Wading through the crowd, we were able to find SOME of the group we were meeting up with, and once reaching the bar, we realized we've basically traveled the entire bar.

Once at the bar, it's a battle to actually get the bartender's attention, and even then, your order is probably going to be place after someone who just pushed his way right next to you, setting you adrift with the people trying to dance, and if you're lucky, you can turn around and find someone you know so you can chat while waiting.

As intimate (read: SMOOSHED) as it is, it could be a fun space, as they have a red-lined silent movie on the screens at the bar and the DJ spinning nice and dancey tunes.  I think I got to talk to most of the people we were with, but as the night progressed, the better we were getting packed in, making it harder to get your (little space) groove on, and before leaving, the place almost hit critical mass, along with the super-aggressive and catty ladies who would mad dog you if you even breathed on them.

If anything, this place is great as it sits caddy-corner to an In-N-Out that I have some mixed history with, and is a stone's throw from other spots.  Perhaps Carbon's the place to start the evening and then hoof it to other Century City haunts from there, but I'll let that decision be made by the next party leader.

I'm a little confused. I mean, I LOVE dive bars. I LOVE hip hop. You'd think I'd be so into this place I'd chain myself to the wall and threaten never to leave, right?

For some reason it just didn't do it for me though.

Maybe it was bad feng shui.
Maybe it was the "oops!... woah!... excuse me...yikes!" close proximity to just about everyone that got me.
Maybe it was just a little too dark.
Maybe it was that I wanted to bust out a few pops and locks and a running man or two and I just couldn't muster up the ability (okay who am I kidding?).
Maybe it was just cause I was tired and my feet-in-heels were yelling obscenities that would have the Pope crossing his heart.

Who's to say? Probably a little of everything.
Then again, maybe I just needed like 6 more drinks, cause by then, everything's a damn good time. We'll call it even Carbon!

    YAY:
    - Last time I was there they played some really good shit, from some lesser known Mos Def tracks to Jeru.

    - They had bug sex playing on the TV screens. Fortunately I'm TOTALLY into bug pr0n (if you haven't seen Ladybug Bukkake 3, you haven't lived yet)

    - it had that divey feel, like you were in a small, dark bowling lane.

    NAY:
    - after playing Jeru, the DJ switched to hyphy, causing my eardums to collapse and shrink into tiny ittle dingleberries

    - It got too crowded too fast and I kept getting pinballed by four female Big Puns in the dance area

    - I've decided that I'm not into bug pr0n anymore

I have the fondest memories of Carbon. Ahhhh! The hip-pity-hip-pity-hop-hop dance -- no don't stop dancin 'til you can't stop groovin'!  Whew!  My posy and I would get down with our bad selves on Carbon's little dance floor.

Carbon is the coolest 'lil lounge bar in West LA. The DJ's deliver a good mix of funk, hip-hop and dance tunes most evenings. The place is just a good vibe of college kids, hip cats, and ghetto fabulous mama's.

I suggest going to Carbon after 11 PM -- the happening hour. There's no cover charge and free parking available on the street or lot. If you're low on funds, but want to go out dancing, try Carbon (it's Free). It's tiny, but a lot of fun. Skip out should you be claustrophobic 'cuz it is tiny.

It looks like its a bugs life for me!  So I have always loved Carbon, ever since it opened up.  Yeah, its not the prettiest or hippest or cleanest bar in the world but it always reminds me of my friends basements in the Mid West, except of course with the addition of a red light glowing and random movies on tap, like ones that show the mating and decapitating rituals of mantis's and beatles.  WIERD!!!

But in previous ventures to Carbon I got to see great films like City of God and What's up Tiger Lilly.  And the glowing red light give you a new take on films, almost a black and red instead of black on white.

Every time I go the music is on point.  You can always find DJ's spinning tracks ranging for soul, funk to hip hop or indie rock but always cool shit, not top 40 or 50, shit I dont even know what the top is anymore.

It definitely gets crowded, as a matter of fact, we got there at about 9:45 and by 10:15 it was packed, but atleast we had our seat at the bar....and close to the exit for a quick getaway.

OH YEAH...ample parking as well and if your hungry, there is an In and Out across the street.

    We like the bugs
    The bugs that go boom
    We're Tigra and Bunny
    And we like the...

    Yeah, I don't know.

So this bar is just as random as that intro. It's dark. It's red with black walls. Kinda reminds me of my old apartment when I was a Valley girl going through her "goth phase" Yeah, that was pretty.

The space is long and narrow like a shoe box and the bar itself takes up half of the joint, leaving room for what I understand turns into something of a packed dance floor. There are TVs going as well, only what they were showing was weird. Picture if you will, insects. HAVING SEX. What?! Yes. It's true, ladybugs bangin, bees boinkin and not the kind of visual exploits I necessarily needed to see on a Saturday night. I mean, midget porn maybe, but bugs, ewwh.

As for the drinky drinks. Very strongy strong and from what I recall (hiccup), pretty affordable as well. When we arrived it was just the 4 of us and the bartender and by the time we left, the crowd included a melting pot of scenes from the 3 old timers in the corner, to a couple vatos and a punk rock dude to every other walk of life, which was nice to see :)

Check it out, it won't kill ya...it may just try to get all up on your ladybug, what?
