I almost considered not writing this review because it's not necessarily a hidden gem--this place has packed tables and a constant, long line just for take out!! I figured it was my Yelpy duty to write an honest review, though. Maybe someone will thank me or point me in the direction of a better place.
I'm a fan of carnitas but a lot of places do them wrong--burn them, serve them cold and dry--but not here! Moist, hot, delicious carnitas is what we were served.
Service was a bit slow but, as I've already mentioned, it was packed! The chips weren't warm but they weren't bad. You get red and green sauces with your meal, as well as the jalapeno/carrots/onions in some juices, fresh cut onion, cilantro, limes and warm homemade tortillas (which were thick and yummy!)
I also ordered a steak huarache that was made with beans in the masa. It wasn't the best I ever had but definitely in the top three.
Best of all, four of us ate for less than $30. However, it's cash only and you have to be ruthless to snag a table. Don't wait for anyone to seat you, if you see an empty table--take it! It seems like the waitresses work together so stop any of them to order, you will be frequently asked if someone has taken your order already.
It's comparable to Don Pedro's Carnitas on 18th, in my opinion, but a much better deal and better tortillas. If I had to choose between one or the other, I'd have to cheat on my long-time favorite Don Pedro's and come here, instead.
