I know a lot of people have been displeased with this place, but I honestly haven't seen anything worth complaining about. Granted, I've only been there for lunches on week days, but I feel the need to defend this place. Our service has always been impeccable. Just got back from lunch there today and our server was absolutely lovely. The food has always been hot and good. I luuuurve the homemade chips. In fact, come to think of it, I love them so much, I've never even tried the fries. The staff has always been willing to accommodate my drink and sauce requests...and with a smile, no less. Good, hearty sandwiches on good bread, cold stuff is cold, hot stuff is hot, and a lovely staff.
Review Source:So I kept seeing this place, and I finally got a chance to go there. Overall it was just an ok experience, nothing to write home about. It took too long for the hostess to acknowledge I was there first of all. Then I went and sat at the bar and the bartender's service was just alright. Few times I was trying to get her attention and she didn't come over and generally she could have been a little more friendlier. The food was the high point. The burger and the chips were on point. And the Buffalo Shrimp appetizer was good, although another shrimp or two would have been nice. Would I go here again? Well depends if there is somewhere better I could go. It isn't bad but not great either.
Review Source:Went back a few times now and have had better service, Andrea the Owner was super nice and a guy who is always behind the bar was too. Â I have had burgers each time and will not change my mind on the food but the service is much better.
I went on a Wednesday where they had $5.00 burgers (Cheese .50 cents) comes with lettuce, onion, tomato , mustard, and ketchup. Â There really is not much else you need. Â The burger was GREAT, it really was a good burger! Â
They had $1 domestic beers, you cant go wrong!
The only reason I did not give Catch 22 was the service from the bartender. Â She really was not attentive and they really were not that packed. Â On the other hand, everyone else was super nice and welcoming. Â The bartender did not do anything wrong but there was not anything great about her.
I will be going back for sure and I hope I can give Catch 22 4 to 5 STARS
:)
let me start by saying, THANK GOD SOMEONE IN NWI CAN MAKE A DECENT FISH TACO! decent might not be the best choice of word. it brought me back to a better time, toes in the sand, salt water scents dancing under my nose. any food that can do that to you is worth a review! the new menu deserves another trip to this place! i got the cheese curds for an app. and mmmmm. they were lightly breaded not heavy and fried. nice way to switch it up guys! not only was the food good, but the drinks and the service was GREAT! you had me hooked when i saw them squeezing fresh fruit juice into my vodka. thank you! :)
Review Source:Food was good though it took a while to get it. The waitress did warn us they were behind and the current ticket time was about 30 minutes. It did take 30 minutes but the food was good (hamburger was excellent) waitress was good, drinks were goo but a bit pricy, the place was clean. I would go back.
Review Source:I've eaten here 3 times and each was disappointing. First time our firecracker shrimp came out cold. How does something straight out of a deep fryer get cold? Second time my friend's flatbread had to be made 3 times for them to get it right. The last attempt was steak nachos w watery cheese and chewy meat that had that off reheated beef taste.
I might be back when the weather's nice to enjoy the outdoor seating and some drinks... But now that Old Chicago has outdoor seating I'd rather go there.
Grown Up Grilled Cheese with a Goose&Cranberry while watching the NBA finals, listening to a musician, and having a great time with the waitstaff - this place was a great find!
The sandwich was huge and filling.
There was no outside seating left by the time we arrived but we sat a table by the bar and were close enough to the patio to enjoy the outside from inside.
The space was huge and the waitress was a hoot.
Will be back the next time I'm thirst in Merrillville.
Revisited last night. I must say I was extremely disappointed. The sweet potato fries had tons of cinnamon on them. Didn,t  care for asiago nacho appetizer. Tried the signature steak sandwich and the meat was very chewy. Didn,t get much satisfaction from manager Kimberly.
Probably won,t go back
I think this restaurant/bar has plenty of potential, but my experience was just so-so.
the atmosphere is great (lots of nice open airy space), the menu is well put together with good descriptions of the food and the prices are fair. I very much appreciated the little flip-book on the tables that described the different craft  beers they had on tap (I'm big into microbrew!).  however, the service on the evening i was there was not very good.  The restaurant was not busy, but it took a while for the two people at the hostess stand to find someone to seat me.  Took a while to get my drink order (waitress was too busy flirting with people at the bar. I guess I should have just sat at the bar), took about 40 minutes to get my dinner (apparently they ran out of mashed potatoes?) and the food was very salty.  I ordered some kind of chicken something that had a mushroom sauce and had mashed potatoes and right-out-of-freezer-bag veggies covered in salt on the side. by the time the bill arrived I just wanted to get out of there.
the place has potential, and i think if they pay attention to what exactly they are doing they could succeed. Â if you are just stopping in for a beer and to watch the game you'll probably have a great experience. But for dinner? i doubt I'll be returning.
This review is for the bar only, never had the food.
Anyone that doesn't care for the atmosphere in here ("cold") is not a bar person; the atmosphere is excellent. Repeat, excellent. For once, someone put a sizable bar out in the open without a lot of distracting crap. There's a smaller tv or two with the sound off and that's plenty. Â You can see three sides of the rectangle from almost anywhere you sit. The aisles behind the bar seats are plenty wide. It is the epitome of a good socializing bar. I can't give Catch 22 the primary credit for it though. Buffalo Wild Wings deserves the credit. That's right, this is the old Buffalo Wild Wings building which had the best bar in the area when it was open. The reason Catch 22 is good is because of the structural integrity and layout that the old BW3 had.
Beer selection is not all that but it is good for the area. Bartenders seem above average. Has a couple other geographical advantages which I'll leave to you to infer. Â The place seems even more suited to warm weather, I'll be hanging out here for the foreseeable.
Came here on 5/19 because we purchased a Groupon. We were celebrating my best friends bday. Well, we waited for a bar table and it took approximately 30 minutes to be seated. We were greeted by a rude waitress, who obviously had a long day (we know this because she told us when we were leaving).
When we put our drink order in, we had (3) strawberry margaritas, they brought them out in a 16 oz cup, as opposed to a margarita glass...we thought nothing of it and assumed this was what their restaurants protocal was.
Well, on our second round of drinks, my bff's cousin received a 24 oz margarita glass and we had the regular glass as before. My bff and I looked at each other and said...WTF? So we asked the waitress what that's all about, and her answer was that they bring the drinks out in whatever glass is available. So if only a shot glass is available is that what I sould expect to receive my margarita in? I asked her if our glasses will be the same price as her glass...she said yes! Again, WTF?!? So I asked to speak to a manager.
The manager promptly came over, and before she could toss out the same BS the waitress told her I explained the variance of the size and didn't understand how if I am receiving less of the product how is it fair for me to be charged the same price. She apologized and gave me and my bff one on the house. Fine.
On to food...Me and my bff's cousin ordered the nachos. They were awesome! My bff ordered the quesidillas and she fell in love. The drawback is the food took so long we were almost drunk...drinking our calories on an empty stomache! All-in-all, we had fun. Will we go back? NOT! Just wasn't worth the money.
I came home impatiently hungry, found their Groupon and away we went. Â On the downside my 5 yr old disqualified us from the outdoor patio seating, but it was 90 degrees outside anyway. Â
The indoor service was pretty adequate w tables spacious enough to spread out our drinks and food, and the noise levels mostly tame at 5pm on a Saturday. Â The menu descriptions make everything sound delicious and we weren't disappointed by our meals.
Definitely try the chips w your build-a-burger, soooooo well done and thick! Â The french fries had a nice seasoning to them and my lady thought paying $9 for a fresco burrito w no sides was a good idea...hmmmm, but whatever.
After flipping thru their 20+ beer cards, the one I selected was unavailable since they were starting an 11 beer Sam Adams tap-a-thon. Â It turned out to be a good thing once the waitress told me I could get a flight of 7oz glasses for $5.50.
I guess the catch-22 here is that it can't be a great restaurant cuz it's a bar, but maybe it's a great bar when everyone is done eating?? Â Anyway, it's passable overall and we will go again.
My boyfriend and I have been here a couple times, most recently on a Saturday for lunch while we were out running errands. The hostess stand is kinda loud/ bunch of kids working up there. It seemed like way too many for how slow they were-just seemed crowded. Anyways, it was gorgeous outside and they do have the garage door like windows in the bar area and they were up so we asked to be seated in front of one.
Someone had mentioned the decor is kinda bland. I think it's pretty cool. It's kinda minimalist, but overall I think it's cool. I will say tho the bar stools are soo comforable-nice backs..very comfortable.
Food is ok..not amazing. A burger is a burger. Nothing really on the menu that is going to blow your socks off. They do have a build your own burger/grilled chicken sandwich which is kinda cool. They do have alot of different beers on tap, which is cool. They have 4 horsemen which is a brewery out of South Bend. Overall, good beer, decent food. I'm sure Ill be back.
I would not recomend the establishment for three simple reasons; Poor service, low quality of food prepared, and the price is too high for the first two reasons. Â I could bore you with the particulars, read the other reviews to avoid repitition. Â This is simply a bad place that does not have an excuse to be this bad. Â They have been open for more than a few months now? Â There is more than just wrinkles that need to be ironed out. Â There are too many good places in Merrillville to go to. Â Do not waste your time.
Review Source:The place is a bit on the cold side as far as atmosphere is concerned. Â Â It is very open, maybe a little too open concept. Â Â We had a wrap and their steak. Â Â The steak was good but not great. Â Â I am nearly certain this is not a 21 day aged steak as claimed. Â Â The garlic mashed had good flavor but was overprocessed so it had a gummy texture. Â The wrap was good but was claimed to have a cilantro aioli, which was not on the wrap and when asked for it, it took 2 servers 10 minutes to figure out what we were asking for and by the time we got it, the wrap was soggy. Â Â
The pluses: their beer selection was fantastic, their daily specials seem to be a great value and will keep me coming in on occasion.
Bland decor, dirty walls and ceilings (above arms reach), over priced food, incredibly slow service. Apparently it takes 45 min to cook a well done hamburger. (waitress blamed the long wait on a well done burger that arrived cold) Our food was brought out by what looked like a teenage dishwasher in dirty ripped cloths.
(dialog)
Teen: ok who had a burger
Me: what kind? Â we ordered 3 different burgers
Teen: looks puzzled, mumbles "I don't know"
me: what's on it?
Teen: "I don't know" as he starts to pick through it
Me: what's on it?...stuff?
Teen: "pretty much"
Me: just put the food on the table
Waitress was incredibly slow. Absent minded , And could not keep diet/regular pop straight.
Pastrami was good (even though I actually ordered corned beef) burgers were cold, mediocre at best, corned beef sandwich was large 1 inch cubes of meat on bread, very awkward to eat.
I will not return and don't see them staying open longer than a month or two.
From what I understand they had a lot more servers there and all were given trial periods, most didn't make the cut which is why I think the service was bad to start with when they opened. The good servers have prevailed and was nothing like I had heard.
Here is what I observed from my visit...
The good:
Good food - Adult grilled cheese (huge sammich) & pot roast was delicious (big pile). quesadilla app was pretty good too. Â - my girl asked for her fries extra crispy and that's how they came.
Attentive server/busser - My drink was never empty and there were never any plates just sitting around on our table. They have expediters to get your food to your table faster as well, that's nice so the kitchen isn't waiting on our server to return
Clean - It's new, obviously it's clean
Large bar - plenty of room in there to watch a game and grab a drink
The bad:
Front of House - This needs to be addressed immediately, this is what people first experience! 4 people crowding the front couldn't figure out who was seated where and to which servers, basically arguing with each other. There was what looked like a greeter or hostess/door opener standing there with a confused look on her face like she wasn't needed (she wasn't).There is a tiny window where the hostess stares through from her station to the dining tables.. she does it often and at long periods of time. Is something on my face? I know this all sounds trivial but it's chaotic at best at the front door...
Wasted space/Unusual seating - The bar is very open and has large spaces where there definitely could be seating. There are tables where there shouldn't be, like by the kitchen door? Right in front of the entrance? No one wants to sit in these places guys.
Time between Apps/dinner - We had our appetizer for maybe 5 minutes before our food came out.. not ideal but not the end of the world
All in all it was pretty good. The large beer selection and tasty food will get me to come back until I have a bad experience of my own.
I'd say Catch 22 Â has gotten through their opening kinks because i loved it! Â Went on Groundhog Day and took advantage of the Woodchuck promotion which was very cool! Â We got a free glass with a pint of woodchuck for less than 3 dollars. Â Our server Kevin was incredibly nice and attentive and the food was great. Â I had the grilled cheese and sweet potato fries. Â All made from scratch and in good time. Â Overall awesome place and we will definitely be back!
