I remember when this place was called "Hans' Gasthaus", the owners Hans Lang and partner Rudi Bernhardt opened their "Gasthaus" back in 1994 and had some great German food (i.e. Sauerbraten, Schnitzel, Wurst's, ect.) as well as a good selection of imported German beers on tap.

About five years ago an Irishman (Aiden Quinn) bought "Hans' " and changed the name to "Celtic Gasthaus" - being the product myself of a German mother and Irish father, that really didn't sound all that bad! I think the German and Irish mix here reflects favorably on the traditions of the local community, one that has had a long history of restaurants and pubs that helped to make this little part of Queens a nice mix of Germany, Ireland, Italy and Poland.

Anyway, the "Gasthaus" now has a good selection of around six different beers on tap including things like Guinness (naturally!), Sam Adams and imported "Hofbrauhaus" beer direct from the brewery in Munich. You can still purchase this beer at the "Gasthaus" in full one liter ("Masskrug" size)  beer mugs. Some German bottled beers like "Erdinger" and a number of others are also available.

The "Gasthaus" also has a nice outdoor backyard "Biergarten", probably the last one left in the Ridgewood-Glendale area of Queens that was once fondly known  as "Little Germany". At the turn of the last century this area had large German owned beer gardens and New Yorkers would come to the area on the weekends to enjoy what was then a day out in the countryside.

The interior of the "Gasthaus" has a lot of dark rich mahogany wood and the place retains the Euro feeling that has been combined here with a strong sports bar influence.

They have five large hi-def flat screen TV's and pride themselves on showing all the major European soccer games, as well as American football and hockey games. Of course no pub is complete without its darts! They also have a DJ on some nights and live music once in a while.

This is a real neighborhood tavern, not a "dive", but frequented by a very local and friendly crowd. I would say most of the patrons reflect the German, Irish and Italian backgrounds of the majority of the population still living in and around Glendale (although that is changing).

Of note Mr. Quinn also owns the "Glenlo Tavern" over on Fresh Pond Rd. in Ridgewood.

A pleasant-enough pub across the Glendale border from Ridgewood. The green-fenced back patio with tomato and pepper plants growing is the best part. Indoors is darts, video games, and about 6 beers on tap, including "semi"-interesting choices like Hofbrauhaus and Sam Adams seasonal.
