I want to set the record straight here because yelp reviews had me all tense for some woman-hating gay naked cowboys in a trashpit:
This place is awesome!!! I had SO much fun. Â Not only was there none of this purported cover at the door, I was COMPLETELY welcomed throughout the whole night. Â Yes, they do tell you at the door that if you don't know the steps to the line dances and other choreographed stuff going on, you will be asked to leave the dance floor. That's just so that people who want to shake their shit and do it in step don't have to worry about trampling your goofy ass. Â I didn't know any of the stuff and was able to pick it up and was encouraged to join in on the dance floor by many of the men. Â A charming old queen with quite the rhythm even swooped me up and taught me to waltz. There were other women there and they were dancing and having fun.
There were plenty of attractive gay men there, but I didnt feel like the atmosphere was as 'in your face' as some of the more aggressively gay boys club bars in boystown. Â (DOn't get me wrong; those are lots of fun, but this was a few notches down and a few notches up on the dance technique.)
The website lists pop music or something played after 1am. That's not true; it was still dancey country stuff, but I absolutely didn't care.
Drink prices were fine and the bar tenders were sweeties.
I DEFINITELY want to go back and I'd like to go on a Friday night when they have lessons.
Final thought: I wanted to shed a tear seeing some of the charming older men sweeping each other around the dance floor. Quite romantic. :)
When I first moved to the city, I hung out with my brother a lot, and we ended up at Charlies by the end of the night typically. $20 cover because of my gender... I appreciate the cover. When my boyfriend comes to a straight bar with me, I typically get in for free and he pays $5. But $20, for a end of the night, dive bar, where you have to stand in line with men for the womens bathroom, that has one stall and no door. Â Personally, I wouldn't waste my time on Charlies if I was male, let alone female. The bar does not like women, the staff even wears shirts with the female logo on it and a circle with a cross over it. LAME!! If you are gay and male, and love your girlfriends who hang out with you on Saturday nights, Charlies is not the place for you!
