You know, I really wanted to like this place. Like, I really wanted to like this place. The coffee is kind of pricey and geezze, every time I go in there it seems like I get the same moody barista who is upset that I am there...buying coffee? The food is good, but I always feel unwelcomed. Take some happy pills folks...please?

Charmers Cafe/Dagel and Beli is a really phenomenal place. I'm not sure of it's official name, however, I fondly refer to it as Dagel and Beli. Overall, the bagel sandwiches are great (however, recently they've limited their once very extensive and wonderful sandwich menu). They also have some great shakes (Ooga Booga) and I enjoy their discounted drinks with their Charmers cup. Also, if you're smart you'll be able to save some money with their daily trivia question. I'm a New Yorker, and grew up on bagels, so while I'm not a fan of "steamed" bagels, I always get my bagels toasted, I really enjoy the ambiance at this place. The only reason why it's not 5 stars is because I somehow spend more money than I ever expect to for a drink and a bagel sandwich ($10). Overall, it's a wonderful place to spend a weekend morning.

Like some other people have stated, I really want to love Charmers but can't quite.  It's a cozy little place and everything I've tried has been delicious.  But it's really hard to love a place where you don't feel welcome.  To celebrate our anniversary, my husband got up early to watch the sunrise from Pratt Beach and decided to come to Charmers for breakfast afterward.  The girl at the counter (the samegirl mentioned in another review, I'm betting) wasn't outright rude but definitely wasn't friendly either.  I can understand not having time for "hi" and a smile (which is really all I ask) if you're swamped but there was only one other patron there who had already been served.  She acted like she was doing us a big favor by taking our order.  It just sucked to be treated that way.

I took one step in and thought "Oh god, ANOTHER socialist leaning anarcho-punker coffee place". Boy, I was surprised (and judgmental, apparently). Bagel sandwiches are great, and once the staff warms up a bit to you they're really nice. Seating is funky, but fun. My only complaints are their coffee has this odd, sweet after taste i don't care for (though it may just be the blend I keep getting) and every lemonade I got had like, 3 ice cubes......I NEED MORE CUBES!!!!

That said, the bagels and bagel sandwiches are great. I can see this place really growing on me, so I'll keep giving it a chance.

Dropped in and had a 20 oz americano. What can I say, the coffee is not very strong (and if you are used to the Wormhole, Charmers will disappoint you a lot ) but coffee here is very inexpensive. There are many baked goods options. Free Wi-fi without any sort of code. The place is linked directly to a bagel place in the back so Charmers almost feels like a deli. The restroom - oh lord, the restroom is gross. Staff aren't super friendly either and when I came in there was no music....

So yes, Charmers is a solid 3-star.

    People make the place...or don't.

Just a couple of blocks from my new place so quite convenient but...

Yes, the atmosphere is charming and homey but it isn't all that warm or welcoming. Specifically each time I have gone in I have left thinking I shouldn't go back and probably won't. One of the baristas, a black girl, ( she always seems to be working) is smug, rude and appears to always be in a bad mood. This is a real turn off. When I go to a neighborhood coffee place I want to and should feel welcome and the employees have an obligation to and a direct impact on making me feel that way. It is, afterall, in the best interest of the business. One bad apple can indeed spoil the customer experience.

The coffee is good quality, as they serve Metropolis coffee but it is also quite high priced. The baked goods are poor at best.

I really wanted to be a local here as I do my best to patronize local businesses and it is so close to my home but this is not possible as long as I am being treated poorly when spending my hard earned money.

Advice to owners - dump this girl and hire someone in her place that understands what customer service, kindness and friendliness truly means.

    Yes! Yes! Yes!
Charmers just makes me think "awww" to myself because I wish I could spend more time there. And now that I've discovered it, and I live within walking distance, you bet I will!

Before I get ahead of myself, I am not a coffee connoisseur. So I'm not judging my experience by the taste of the coffee, since I didn't even try it. I'm more talking about the environment, selection of drinks/food, and that jazzy stuff.

I had a cold apple cider (meh and expensive!), a bagel sandwich (small but mmm!), and a raspberry sparking lemonade (delicious!) during my stay this morning. I was studying and working so I had them over like a four hour period. You write your order on a little sheet, and hand it in at the register... I like the method. Everything is whipped up quickly. Overall, great selection of sandwiches, baked stuff, drinks, etc for a neighborhood coffee shop. Next time I want to try the lox and the salads.

The decorations and such are kind of gothic feeling, which doesn't match the cheery staff, but I'm not complaining. I posted up on a tall table with an outlet right next to me (SCORE!) and hooked up to the free wift that DOESN"T REQUIRE A PASSWORD (SCORE TWO TIMES!). The staff played some smooth tunes, smiled a ton, were available when I needed them to be, but mostly just let me study (SCORE THREE TIMES!).

There is plenty of seating, and a variety of it. The tables outside are a FOURTH SCORE! for when I come back just to relax and read and so is the whole room in back for general relaxing and chatting.

There is a lack of coffee shops in Rogers Park, so I'm glad I live so close to Charmers because I'd go without otherwise (Starbucks doesn't qualify).

I live a half-block from Charmers so you have to understand I wish I could give this place five stars. I think they have an excellent core product; coffee. They serve Metropolis and at least from a standpoint of their brewed coffee, it is very, very good. I am also happy with the quality of the coffee.

The bakery on the other hand leaves much to be desired. It isn't terrible, but my main contention is that you are simply not getting what you are paying for in this aspect. It always seems to be dry. When I first moved in I was trying 3-4 products a week. I really tried hard to find something I liked, but I was always disappointed.

Food. The food is pretty good. You have a great selection of bagels and bread to choose from and they do a pretty good job with it. Always very fresh and at least for me hits the spot every time. A solid neighborhood establishment for grub.

Customer Service. This is the reason this place didn't get four stars. The morning crew always seems to seem annoyed at the presence of customers. I studied it over a period of about four months here and it seems to be a division of labor issue. The person making food seems to always be redundantly communicating with the register person and barista/cashier. This does a few things. It slows down the line to crawl for one. Secondly, it really draws the attention away from the customer. If you throw espresso drinks into the mix you may as well forget the entire transaction. If there are more than 2 people waiting for drinks sometimes I duck my head in and turn around and go. It comes down to a time factor. I can't wait 15 minutes for brewed coffee.

I really like Charmers. The people that work there are for the most part really sweet and intelligent people. Some of them need to turn down the attitude a few notches. I hope someone who can do anything about the aforementioned issues could help address them because I really think I could be swayed to give Charmers a five-star rating if some very minor operations issues were addressed.

Love this little hipster coffee joint. Their ice cream is AMAZING and with the free wi-fi bonus, everyone should try this place out. It's so close to Jarvis, it's a shame if you don't!

I like Charmers! It's right off the Jarvis red line stop, every interaction I've had with the staff is great and the coffee is good. The feel of the place is very neighborhood-y, I really feel a sense of community in there. I like their bagels as well, and even when it's busy, the staff handles orders in a timely manner. I was suspect of the tall stack of cookies wrapped in plastic, but had one the other day anyways (oatmeal) and was delighted with the freshness and taste. My only reason for not going with five stars is the price, it is right up there with Starbucks, but the quality is far superior (if I could give half stars it would definitely get 4.5).

I have been frequenting Charmers a lot lately while working across the street at the side project.  Charmers is, as one would hope, really quite charming.  It is a cute little cafe with talented baristas, comfortable seating, good coffee, and good sandwiches.  I haven't yet begun exploring the baked goods or milkshakes, but I'm sure I will in the near future.  The only down side I have found so far is the price.  My coffee and sandwich earlier this evening came to a little over $10, which means that Charmers will have to be an occasional treat as opposed to a daily event.

I love Charmers. Its damned charming. DAMNED!

I lived in Chicago briefly and this was in my top 5 favorite places. The staff is friendly and diverse and if you dont like the sandwiches, well, your fault.

FUNNY STORY: I was on my way out of town very hungover and tired. I have been there before and liked the veggie bagel. I felt like I had ordered just that. So I walk in with a few bags of luggage looking probably very insane. I akwardly ask for a veggie bagel. I am directed to the card-o-options. Uh. So I circle everything bagel and all the veggies listed. Under for here or to go I circled OR. LOL. Still hilarious. Then the man starts making my sandwich and converses about what kind of veggies I want. Didn't I circle them all.

    GOD I LOVE THAT STORY.

There are two rooms for a varied ambiance! Free WI FI. Next to a super cute wine shop. Probably responsible for said hangover.

I really loved coming here! It reminds me of a place back home that I used to go to often.

The perfect little cafe, it has everything you could want for a quick bite to eat or even a snack. Bagels from the bakery around the corner, sandwiches, ice cream, soups, coffees, they even juice!!!!, desserts and breakfast pastries, shakes, bags of chips, and I"m probably missing a few things too.

The tables are nicely spread out and the art around the walls makes for a comfy sit in.   I believe they make their own ice cream, and it is sooooo good. I got the Oreo and tried the peach. Next time I'll be getting my own peach.

I will be coming here quite frequently because I work just two blocks away, so next time I am hoping they have a really yummy soup on the menu.

I like the self serve water station so I don't have to bother the employees for a little cup of it.

This is my new neighborhood coffee shop. A 15 minute walk from my place it's a nice little spot for some coffee a good steamed bagel sandwich or a pastry and some time to read.  The service is decent, not the greatest and certainly could be improved. Most people who work at Charmers are nice but the service speed could be picked up a bit.

It seems Charmers now just incorporates the Dagel and Beli shop and luckily has made ordering easier by just writing out the ingredients in normal English rather than switching all of the first letters in each sandwich.

I haven't had any pastries or quiche but they look decent. I would appreciate a bulk bagel price and the ability to order some cream cheese to go but it seems Charmers is more geared towards making sandwiches.  What I do like are the wide variety of sandwiches or make-your-own options.  The first time I had the roast beef with garlic cream cheese on a garlic bagel the roast beef was so tender and rare. Mysteriously, this sandwich has disappeared from the menu and the roast beef is not as good. Still pretty tasty but it looks like a different distributor for the roast beef.

There's the standard variety of coffees, lattes and other drinks along with a nice list of ice cream drinks. I am a fan of the Metropolis coffee and the skim chai latte.

There are an adequate number of tables and more comfy options in the back. There's also a few spots outside on nicer days.

All in all a nice little coffee shop in my hood that I will frequent more often.

Great atmosphere. Quiet, with neighborhood people hanging out with their laptops. The back room is nice also. Has books and games....that's where I take the kids. My kids love their ice cream cones.

BUT....not once has the staff at Charmer's gotten my sandwich order right. I've ordered maybe.....7-10 sandwiches over the past 2-3 years. It's weird too, since you have to fill out this form stating EXACTLY what you want on the sandwich.

The coffee is good, but expensive (well, the entire menu is expensive). I can get pricey coffee at Starbucks down the street.

I like the idea of a quiet neighborhood cafe in my neighborhood (Roger's Pk).....if only they could get my sandwiches right.

I like that i have a coffee shop so close to me.  The prices are pretty steep but it is a nice friendly environment.  I tried a croissant sandwich which was made to perfection.

They have outdoor seating for people like myself that need that for my dog.  Definately a keeper.

I don't get out to Roger's Park too often, but this corner cafe tucked across the street from the Jarvis red line stop is, well, a charmer. They had energetic but not distracting Cuban tunes playing, along with a steady stream of neighborhood regulars stopping in with cheerful greetings for the barristas. The front window has lofted seats where you can watch the bustle of the corner traffic, made up of a calm mix of businesses and residential complexes. There was an old euro-looking guy on the front patio taking extreme, slow satisfaction in his morning smoke, which paired nicely with the spanish guitar music heard overhead.

They also have a solid selection of Hoosier Mama pies and other patisserie options. All in all this cafe is a gem of a weekend study spot.

I really like this cafe. I've tried espressos and lattes here, and all have been delicious, and served by talented baristas, often with some pretty impressive artwork in the foam.

The cafe itself is cute, kind of rustic and not too polished. Charming, you might say.

My only suggestion for improvement would be that the cakes, pastries and pies aren't presented very well. I've never tried one, and they may be delicious, but a few stacks of cookies, pies in foil trays, and crumbling pieces of cake in a mostly empty refrigerator just don't look very appetizing.

Charmers is a terrific place to go to quietly use WiFi while munching on a bagel with cream cheese, sipping coffee or tea, or drinking one of their very delicious milkshakes. They have great pastries and cakes, too, though I wish they were more affordable.

The staff is uniformly friendly and polite and have a good sense of humor, and wait time is short because they know how to prepare items quickly.

It's a comfortable place and I would take just about anyone here to relax and hang out. It's also just a couple of blocks from where I live, so the convenience cannot be beat.

Their coffee is good, the service is fast and friendly, and its probably on the high end of where it should be price-wise. Almost $9 for a plain coffee and a bagel with lox and cream cheese? Its good quality lox though, I will give them that- and they are generous with it. Still, these are Lincoln Park, not Rogers Park, prices.

Their bagel sandwiches menu is so irritating to read though, as they seem to think its real cute to interchange the first letters of all the words in the sandwich names. Rewrite your annoying menu, please- its not cute. Its actually, to use "Charmer-talk",  fetty prucking irritating.

Cute place with outdoor seating.  Staff is friendly enough.  They have about half a dozen varieties of bagels and spreads with varies vegetables, meats, and cheeses to design your own sandwich.

I ordered a mocha with soy both times I was here and it was good.  Strong and not too sweet.  On my second visit I ordered a toasted bagel with hummus.  I asked for my mocha to go but they made it for sit down.  I think the girl was new and I had ordered my bagel for sit down so she might have gotten confused.

It took the guy almost 10 minutes to toast and put spread on my bagel.  I saw him make the more complicated orders that were taken after mine at the same time as he was trying to make my bagel.  He brought all 3 orders out at the same time.  I was a bit annoyed that I had to wait that long for a simple bagel and spread.  The coffee prices are on par with other cafes but the bagel was way too expensive - it cost about $4

I like Charmers Cafe. Just came back from lunch and I had ORD of Beduction. ORD of Beduction is everything toasted bagel, turkey breast with avocado, cucumber and melted cheese. Not bad at all.
They have Fart Smella sandwich on their menu.  A weird name and not funny to me.
Their sandwiches are slightly more pricey. ORD was $ 6.49, no chips, no pickle but I liked the atmosphere and I will be back.

I like it and it's quite possible that I will go back BUT not before first seeing what my other options are.

    Reasoning:

Half of the staff seems nice while half seems to need an attitude adjustment (plenty of hellos and smiles while one sour apple just seemed annoyed..bad day? perhaps, but keep it in the breakroom). This is called the Charmers Cafe so be a little more charming kind sir :)

Espresso drinks are pretty good (read strong like I like em'), but neck and neck with Starbucks in terms of pricing (quite possibly a few pennies more). Good coffee/espresso just doesn't have to cost THAT much.

The sandwich offerings are great (and named very creatively). They had a few dessert/pastry items that seemed like they had been in the case for a while so i'm not sure if those are selling like hot cakes or not. A couple of them sound like something I might want to try (chocolate cheesecake) but I would need some stats on freshness first.

Overall a nice addition to this seemingly blossoming "Jarvis Square".

I have been meaning to write a review on this for ages.  Let me preface all this by saying I live a mere block away and go practically every morning.  I will probably continue going to this place regularly while I continue to reside in Jarvis Square...

so why only the 3 star "meh" rating then?

-- Their cost is slightly more pricey than a neighborhood coffee shop should be (Though I can understand seeing they are the ONLY coffee shop in all of Jarvis square, so they can charge what they want)

-- Most of employees act like they hate being there.  I know there is a general aloof malaise coffee shop workers have to maintain, but most literally act like they hate being there (maybe management sucks? ).  The only one whom seems to have any sort of personality is the guy who looks like David Cross with sideburns.  A part of the charm of an independent cafe is the personality of their employees, and it is just plain lacking, IMO

-- They steam their sandwiches and it can sometimes make the place smell funky

-- (This one may just be one of my own quirks) I find the whole "goofy name" for sandwich is really really annoying.  When I look at a list of 20+ sandwiches I want to be able to easily figure out which one I want instead of seeing a bold nonsensical name (like "Fart Smella" as sandwich name), and then having to read the fine print to figure out what is in it.

Besides my diatribe, I do really like having a community cafe and am glad that they can continue to have a steady clientèle and hope they remain a staple of the area.

I wanted to like this place but can't go there- the coffee is so expensive!  Even a little cup of coffee will put you out over $2.  Smoothies or Juice would be more like $6- and you have to tip because those kids hardly make anything.  The workers there are only paid $6-$7, no benefits.  I know because my friend applied for a job there- its not enough to live on, which makes me feel bad going there even though the food and drinks are very good.  Also, it always seems like my order gets screwed up when I go in there, but i feel too uncomfortable to say anything, even though i just dropped $5 on coffee.  So its frustrating.  The other thing is, their sizes are different from other places.  They have medium, large and x-large instead of small medium and large.  This causes you to feel ripped off when you order a large and get a medium.  Not too good of a marketing strategy if you ask me.

I would say its worth the trek to Royal Coffee, Metropolis, or even starbucks instead- at starbucks they not only get paid semi-decently, they have insurance and stock options.

    I love this place.

I miss my old neighborhood, with all of its safety and none of the crack houses, but Charmers makes me feel at home, with a nice, independently owned business that adds a lot to my block without making it chain.

Additionally, the bagels (which are a la Dagel and Beli) are far better than those you can get at the chain places.  I adore the garlic bagel with veggie cream cheese for my morning meal.  As a treat to myself when I am actually running with a couple extra minutes, I pop I luxuriate in the homemade spread, which is sweet and savory on the bite of the bagel at the same time.  The spearmint Chiclets dropped in my bag are so cute and useful for my garlic breath.

For a pick-me-up, a latte is always in order with Metropolis brew served up strong.  My boyfriend adores the their Root Beer Float.

So why the lack of one star?  A little overpriced, every so often one of those hipsters behind the counter does get a bit surly, and the coffe drinks aren't *perfect*.  But I love this place, and I loe the bagels, so if you are nearby, pop in here and have a drink.  If I am the only one that keeps going, well, Charmers will be no more.

I just spent 3 GLORIOUS hours soaking up the sun with a good friend in their outdoor seating area which they wisely already have set up. I was absolutely thrilled they were rearing to do for the warm weather--yay! I honestly could not think of a better way to spend a day off from work, it truly was great!

Charmer's cafe is wonderful neighborhood coffee house--it has lots of low key ambiance and you can tell it is a hit with the eclectic Rogers Park crowd. I really wish Yelp would allow for 1/2 star reviews because this place is a solid 3 1/2 stars in my book.

They offer a wide array of sweet treats (the chocolate zucchini bread is delicious!!), build your own sandwiches, ice cream, and of course caffeinated beverages (right up my alley!). They serve up metropolis coffee here folks, so be sure you are ready for some strong stuff. I mean, I got the medium roast and I am still buzzing. Imagine if I had ordered the dark roast--oy vey!  One thing I think is great is that the costumers can fill out order forms for the type of sandwich they want, I think that is a nice touch.

They have everything a coffee shop should have, comfy seating, free WiFi, boardgames, lots of food options, and also SPACE to spread out. The bagel store that used to be next door has either moved or is no longer because now that space is now an extension of the cafe. It is rather large in there so it is good for groups, but it is also good for studying, work, etc. Makes me wish I lived closer--sigh!

All in all it is a solid place, the few downsides for me is that they charge for refills and not just a dollar. The just take .75c off the original price of the coffee. In my book, that is a rip off and I do not care how good your coffee is. Also, they should take better care to have a cleaner bathroom. I am bit of stickler about that sort of thing and appreciate businesses that kept the restroom nice & clean. Otherwise, I am fan of Charmer's and will hopefully be back soon.

Not adding or taking away any stars, but I finally did make it back here yesterday afternoon for a sammich and a coffee. My iced decaf americano was quite good. The sandwich was the Rogers Park. The bagel it was on was excellent. The BBQ mayo added a nice touch. It was a small bagel but they were pretty generous with the ham that was on it. I kinda wish they would have said on the menu that it was honey ham though, because I am not a big fan of honey ham.

Really that's my only gripe, I'll most likely revisit next time I am in this part of the city (which is not that often).

Charmer's is very different and different is good.

Upsides: You write your order on a slip of paper that's easy to map (hard for them to screw that up, and you get to write - it's different), Their food is always above average. Their menu items have funny names. The people are cool and helpful.

Downsides: Don't go there in a hurry, I wouldn't say it's a place for people that are in a rush...which I'm not - so good for me.

I've been there three times and each one something went wrong.  First my wife and I waited about 30 minutes for our ice cream order.  While the ice cream was pretty good, not exactly worth the wait.  They were training new staff, so we were forgiving.  Went back and they screwed up my tea order.  They were nice when I pointed out the mistake and took care of it.

The last time I was there, I ordered a chai tea but was given a latte instead.  I didn't discover it until I was on the train, but that was the final straw.  While I love the idea of a coffee shop near by that isn't a Starbuck's, I wish it were better...

The staff is very friendly and the location is great.
However, I agree with others. The bagel sandwiches are defintely overpriced (they are good, but the price is crazy), and they are indeed small.  The smoothies are good as well and are made fresh, but seem a tad expensive as well.
The "coffee shop" industry is defintely a competitive one, especially with a Starbucks on every corner - but in this instance there is nothing else within walking distance, so it seems disingenuous to charge such a premiun for things that can be had elsewhere. I thought that opart of the plight of the "neighborhood" coffee shop was trying to keep the consumers IN the neighborhood? How can you do that if your prices are high?

Unfortunately Charmers Cafe has turned into a necessary evil for me--my office just moved to the area and it's the closest coffee fix. This is a great injustice, as The Common Cup is just too far to be walking distance, and is a superior coffee place.

Charmers is expensive--$6 for bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel? A tiny bagel (not even a good one!) with a chintzy amount of toppings. The other sandwiches are the same price, and just as pathetic. I shouldn't be able to eat a full bagel & toppings and still be hungry. Just so you don't think I'm a champion eater, with a 'normal' sized version of the same thing I'd probably only finish half. The employees are far from friendly, or even nice, and I don't want to do anything but get in and out of there.

If this review was based solely on the above, I'd give them a star. However their lattes are wonderful (but expensive), especially when made by one particular barista whose name I don't know (because they're so unfriendly!). It's the reason I go back. Well, that and the proximity.

I miss The Common Cup. If only it was 2 blocks closer and within reasonable walking distance for a cup of coffee.

Why has nobody mentioned the 2-for-1 bagel sandwiches from 6-8 pm?

Sure, this place is an oasis in the East Rogers Park desert.  Sure, it's cozy and friendly.  Sure, it sells good drinks and treats.

The bagel sandwiches are customizable in a satisfying array of options, made with delicious, fresh ingredients.  They're arguably slightly overpriced at $6 each, but at 2-for-1, it is difficult to find a cheaper dinner for two anywhere.  Or get one for yourself and eat the other for lunch or breakfast the next day.

This is a very cute place right near the Jarvis L station.  It's a great place to take a walk to in summer.  You can pick up a cup of coffee or tea, and walk a couple more blocks, and you will be at the lakefront.

It also has free wi-fi if you happen to want to bring along a laptop.or palm pilot.

Very uniquely decorated and it has outdoor seating in summer as well.

Potentially a good independent coffee shop made a bit strange by a strange (weekend?) staff and a menu that doesn't list everything they have.

Charmers Cafe and Dagel & Beli are the same shop as far as I can tell... am I crazy here, or maybe on the weekends it's just the same?  But it really does seem like they merged the counters, yet there wasn't really any menu for the bagels/sandwiches anywhere that I could find.  There was a rather large chalkboard pointing to a sign for the "bagel order forms" ... and a few signs referencing weekday specials (again, I was here on a weekend though).  The bagel order form didn't have any prices, nor did some of the other signs.  It was all in all very strange.  (i'll leave it to brian to tell you that not filling out the form and simply telling them you want a toasted bagel is not acceptable!).  I only realized they had egg or breakfast sandwiches just after I had ordered but didn't want to get involved with changing up my order, so I went in starving and left still hungry.

...I ordered an XL Chai. and a coffee cake (though they corrected me in saying "oh, the pecan roll?" ...as if they didn't know what coffee cake was).

One by one they brought the drinks we ordered out... but then strangely, they did the same one by one with the pastries.  (she literally came out with a bagel... then came to our table to bring us a chocolate croissant... i guess doing everything at once was too mind boggling). 10 minutes later I hadn't gotten my "pecan roll" so I went up and asked.

The crowd was a strange mix of roger park hipster meets retirement community... it was oddly appealing.  I saw the queeniest old man I've EVER seen in my life... and I've seen a lot.  I think there was even lipstick involved with his denim stretch pant combination.  He came to chit chat w/ his friends.

Overall still cute, but really..get a real posted menu!

Charmers Cafe is attached the the Dagel & Beli sandwich shop.  This is basically the white-bread hang out spot for the area.  The clientele is made up mostly of laptop based bourgeoisie.  That's not totally negative though, most of the time they are remain quietly tuned into the Ipods while catching up on their work.  But whenever there are more than two laptops on a table beware, for there's a luncheon in progress.  Caffeine induced rants and office gossip can drown out even the worst of folk music that Charmers always seems to have on.  I find it occasionally very hard to concentrate here.

I guess my complaints aren't really location specific.  Generally, I think that the atmosphere in coffee shops have declined in relation to the increase in mobility of business practices and products.  Keep your work at home.  Coffee shops are for conversation, not conference calls.

Oh yeah, they charge a dollar for a refill.  That's shitty, because they only give you a mug for $1.75.  My half finished coffee was getting a bit cold so I asked for a "warm up" i.e. refill.  Instead someone with a bad attitude and a typewriter tattoo stuck my coffee under the steam jet in the espresso machine, a stingy and annoying way to avoid a half a refill.

The coffee (Metropolis) is good and the atmosphere inviting.  Several large tables to spread out your work or newspapers, and plenty of light to read by.  The chairs are also good-sized--not the tiny tots kind you find in trendy places.  The AM staff is just surly enough (or not yet awake) to make ordering a coffee an enjoyable experience (i don't handle perky well at 7 AM).

What's missing?  Maybe it's because of the time I go, but this place doesn't have the eccentric/cozy/unique vibe that places like Beans & Bagels (Montrose) and Bourgeois Pig do.
