Almost no one spoke well enough English on my first visit, yes I realize this is a TexMex but when you can't communicate with the waitstaff it makes life difficult.
Apparently they were known for their tequilas, there was no separate tequila menu. The server, although very nice and attentive didn't seem to really know what tequila was or which ones were offered. The food was mediocre.
On my second and last visit my cousin's food had a hair in it. The waitress seemed very unapologetic and unconcerned. A manager never came over to apologize until we called him over. The margarita was good. I had the fish tacos, again mediocre and afraid to eat the food for fear of more hairs. Never going back unless I'm already wasted and need another drink.
I've been to this Chevy's a few times. Â For the most part, the service has been good and the food is decent. Â So why the 1 star? Â Well, last night I ordered take-out for my family. Â As we were eating, my wife bit into something hard. Â Turns out it was a piece of glass. Â She bit it hard enough that her jaw was hurting all night. Â Digging through her burrito, she discovered at least 2 more shards of glass. Â
I called the restaurant and told the person answering the phone, who immediately seemed concerned and got a manager without my asking. Â The manager did apologize, but I don't feel understood the magnitude of this - eating glass is not really a good thing. Â She offered for me to come back in and get something else, but obviously that wasn't happening. Â She did refund once I asked for it, however the lack of concern on her part seemed surprising. Â I hope some effort was put in place after to ensure that there wasn't any more glass in anyone else's food, but I was not encouraged by the conversation.
This was my first time at a Chevys.
Chips were a little flimsy and all broken up. But the salsa was good!! Â Roasted peppers and cilantro. Â Oddly, no tortillas were available??? Also no cheese sauce or relish like I'm used to at other places. Oh well... not every place can be great...
For dinner, I ordered the Chevy's Super Cinco... it  was a chicken enchilada, beef enchilada, taco, chili rellano, and a tamale.  AND, you have to order sour cream and guacamole as an extra side at $2 and $3 each respectively.
Not too happy about that!! Â AND for an extra $5 you would think you would get more than just a little dollop of each... but no....
Anyway, I was hungry, and at least the food was tasty. Â The server was ok, did the minimums... no bad, but nothing too friendly or extra (took order, brought food, brought check)... had to ask for a water refill.... He very much wanted me to give this place only 2 stars.... but like I said, the food was tasty, and I'm sure other servers are much better than my one experience...
I am always pleasantly impressed within Chevys. The food is cheap (not much more than Moes, Cali tortilla, chipotle, baja etc.) but an actual restaurant with everything you need on the menu.
Best part is the happy hour every day of the week including weekends. Half priced apps and drinks from 3-9 every night. We can eat a full dinner and drinks there for almost nothing. Just have to eat at the bar tables.
Nice Chevy's on route one in Alexandria. Food was good overall, steak for fajitas was very bland like an unseasoned pot roast. Chips and salsa were fabulous as usual and the star of the meal. Our young waiter was pleasant although he didn't spend much time in the dining room, he was most likely pulling double duty in the kitchen.
Everyone enjoyed the food, I would recommend this Chevy's to anyone wanting some great salsa and chips along with some decent Tex Mex food.
Oh how I wish we would have spent our $$ at Safeway and came home to make a nice big taco salad instead...
Our server was very polite, capable and very attentive. Â Kudos to her! Â However, the food was just about the worst I have ever had at a mexican restaurant .
I ordered a chilada style Corona. Â It was served in a warm glass and was watered down - but didn't have any ice. Â ? Â
The chips on the table were thin and broken and left a layer of grease on the paper under them. Â
My daugher had a combo plate - the taco, rice and flauta were cold. Â She ate the taco and some of her black beans. Â She tried the flauta and it was cold and congealed with grease.
My son had a child taco plate. Â The taco was cold, the french fries were cold and greasy. Â His "fresh fruit" was an orange slice and a very thin slice of warm canteloup. Â He only ate half of his taco.
I ordered the fish tacos. Â The tortillas were very thick - as if two were stuck together. Â The fish was cold. Â The rice and beans were cold. Â Everything was flavorless.
My son asked me if we could just go home and make some pasta after 2 bites of his taco. Â My daughter said "the best thing is the salsa." Â Â
I didn't say anything to our server, but she could tell that we were not at all happy with our food by how much was left on our plates. Â Â I put a little over $35.00 on my credit card and feel horrible that I spent the money on this food. Â
We came to Chevy's because of a coupon in the mail. Â In order to use the $10.00 coupon, we had to spend $30.00 on food. Â Our bill with drinks came to $29.00. Â
Good marketing, bad food. Â I don't think we will ever return.
Chevys is one of the better tex mex chains in the area. Their menu variety & specials stand out among the other places I have been to . I usually get the portabella mushroom fajitas served with black beans, rice, veggies, and that oh so tasty corn salsa. Their tortillas are quite fresh as they make them there on site. I have also tried their custom guacamole where the server comes to yor table & makes the guacamole in front of you just the way you want it (more jalapenos for me please). Their fried ice cream is an indulgent sin, but you may want to share, this place has generous portions. Try out their margaritas, they have lots to choose from & even a happy hour.
Pros: good price, good food, good service, military discounts
cons: can be loud sometimes, appetizers are a bit overpriced
Saturday night my SIS & I wanted some margaritas so we decided to try Chevy's..... Margaritas were GREAT!!!! WILL DEF COME BACK FOR HAPPY HOUR... :-) however, the food wasn't that great... Ive had better..... Our waitress was great and attentive......but other than that not much to yelp about. Â :-/.........
Review Source:I go to Chevys mostly just for happy hour and love the place. There are a few things they do really well but most dishes are average....it is a chain. Table side guac is great, wings are nice and spicey. Margaritas are good and the atmosphere is great. Has a neighborhood friendly feel and gets crowded after 7pm. Staff is great....Danny, Bessy and Krem!
Review Source:Stopped by and they no longer carry Bohemia. I'm docking them a star. Also, management may have switched, because service is not as on-the-ball as it used to be. Finally, they seem to put chipotle mayo on everything. Even if you tell them to hold the stuff, they still put it on. Food is still preferrable to the other chains like Chili's or Chichis, barely. Â So unless you're dead set on the generic Tex Mex chain experience, hit La Mexicana Bakery & Tacqueria for a better overall experience.
Review Source:2 stars at the most and I'm being generous with that rating.
I'm not much of a fan of this chain and wonder how they keep themselves in business. The mexican food here isn't very good, its greasy and tastes like it's been either pre made or processed. Additionally, I think they use a lot of flour in their process.
The chips they serve you before your meal are bland and the sauce tastes watered down. The last time I ate here I ordered a burrito and I don't even think I ate half of it. It was that bad, not enough spice, tasted bad, and upset my stomach afterwards.
I won't go out of my way to come here again. That's for sure!
Chevy's is not my cup of tea. The food is very mild and somewhat bland. But the quality of the food is excellent. I like spicy hot Tex Mex. The kind you have to sleep with the windows open afterward. This is not that kind of place. Went on a Thursday evening. The service was good, but not excellent. Our waiter disappeared on us a few times, and the place was not that crowded. Other reviews said that this place was good for kids. Went with a 13 year old and they were not impressed with the offerings.
Review Source:UPDATE. Â I went back with my children and they thoroughly enjoyed their meals (they're aspiring foodies like me; like me it must be balanced with a MINIMUM 3 day/week cardio & weight session. Â You gotta love it!!) That's saying a lot since we spent 5 years in Texas (4 in San Antonio and 1 in El Paso), yes SA is primarily TEXMEX but you can find authentic Mexican restaurants there (BTW we've visited the country of Mexico a few times as well). Â We went in for a late lunch and experienced great customer service WITH realistic menu recommendations. Â We enjoyed our experience and we will definitely go back....why 4 stars? Â The salsa. Â It was deliciously prepared and tasted fresh, but I expect a "punch of heat" with my salsa. Â But, I can always add heat, can't I? :-)
Review Source:I was really disappointed with this place. I've eaten at other Chevy's in VA on several previous occ asions, and this particular one didn't get it right.
I had chicken enchiladas, and they were super-bland; one of my colleagues had some sort of seafood dinner that he sadi was just OK, and the other has a burrito that wasn't very good either.
To boot, their salsa was REALLY lousy. All of their available salsas were REALLY lousy, and I have found that to be a pretty good indication of the overall quality of the food.
I'm not about to review this place by saying "NOT AUTHENTIC" blah blah blah because that would be like trying to say Taco Bell sucks because it's not authentic mexican food. Â No kidding.
That being said... I love Chevy's. Â It is close to where I live so I end up going here a lot. Â The chips are free (YAAAY) and freshly baked. Â The salsa is also really good. Â I love pretty much everything on their menu. Â I recommend the flautas. Â Or if you're trying to eat more on the healthy side try the Fajita Salad with Apple Vinaigrette.
So why am I giving this place 3 stars if I love it so much? Â Well.... there would be one tex-mex chain restaurant that I love more than this one. Â It starts with a G and ends with uapos. Â And that is all I will say about that.
Still... Chevy's is closer to me and it's great.
So I really do like Chevy's, but not really enough to write a review. Â But it appears as if I have to write more reviews in order to make it through Yelp's filter. Â I was first to review (FTR) "La Mexicana Bakery and Taqueria" but after a while it was filtered - most likely because it was my only review ever. Â So here's another one, hoping my other review will now make it through.
Anyhow, Chevy's is awesome. Â My parents come visit me and simply must go there. Â The Chips and Salsa is really the best ever. Â Thin salty chips and salsa that is just the right heat. Â
I usually get the ala carte taco. Â Their tortillas are fresh and fluffy, just the way I like them. Â I do wish they had Coke Zero though. Â
Lastly, ask for a tour of the kitchen. Â It is pretty cool and then the manager gave us free desserts as well.
Solid Mex performance! I'm from San Antonio so while this is more Cali mex it is still great! This is one of the few places I will allow pass for Mexican food. The server gal was sweet and attentive. Food came out fast and damn tasty! Prices were very reasonable ! Have returned several time since
Review Source:2.5 stars
My first experience with Chevy's was back in my undergraduate days. Â It wasn't anything like authentic Mexican, but they meant it when they say FRESH. Â I remembered the fajita being quite tasty. Â I haven't been to the place in 9 years and decided to revisit it when I saw some coupons that came in the mail.
The quality have gone down since my undergraduate days. Â The fajita came in a huge contraption, but the actual quantity of food was smaller than what you would get at local Mexican places. Â I am positive the chicken and steak were cooked before hand and warmed up judging by the speed the food came out and the dryness of the meat. Â Perhaps, I could have gotten a fresher fajita if I came when they were busier? Â A side order of guacamole was literally only two tablespoons and had too much tomato and not enough avocado. Â To their credit, I did like the thin tortilla and salsa at Chevy's.
